MEMBER DIARY

Daily Links – August 15, 2012

Today is August 15th. • On this date in 1057, King Macbeth of Scotland was slain by Malcolm Canmore. Canmore’s father, King Duncan, had been murdered by Macbeth 17 years earlier. What a drama. Someone should write a play or something about those dudes! • Also on this date, in 1947, British rule of India ended, with the subcontinent being divided into the two independent states of India and Pakistan. Reached for comment at the time, a young Joe Biden responded “so which one is 7 and which is 11?” • On this date in 1948, South Korea became a democracy and adopted a constitution, which was promptly readopted by Angelina Jolie and is living in southern California. • And finally, on this date in 1969, Woodstock began. Nearly half a million people showed up, of which almost tens of whom could remember it a week later. And don’t forget, today is National Failures Day! So be sure to send a card or flowers to your favorite Democrat. Consider this an Open Thread.

Joshua Trevi?o. I am proud to have read almost everything he’s ever written here at Redstate in one form or another and having been in some of the same places he’s been, walked along the same corridors, and spoken to some of the same people I want to remind everyone that I know he’s one of the most lucid, thoughtful and wonderfully educated people in the world. He’s a great person and I mean that sincerely. I also want him to pledge, wherever his life and his much-larger-than-average brain takes him: never, ever disparage the “base” – because they’re wonderful people too. Cultural differences notwithstanding.

Second: Drudge is linking to some NYT fashionista’s deconstruction of Paul Ryan’s wardrobe. She posits that Republicans need something to get them “warmed up” unlike Democrats (who are always apparently ready to go) – but look at who she cites as her “sources” – Politico and TMZ.

“The man from Janesville, Wis., was hoisted onto the love pedestal, a nerd suddenly out of his loafers and into the sex dreams of Republicans, who apparently, unlike Democrats, need this kind of thing. The Web site Politico worked up a complete Ryan hot sheet, noting his ?dreamy bedroom eyes? and ?buff? body, while TMZ, brandishing a photo of the congressman and his trainer, called him ?the hottest vice-presidential candidate ever.? ”

Politico and TMZ? Sources for Republicans? Turning them on?

This is why the New York Times is in so much trouble.

Now, I’ve always told Erickson: “Wear a tie.” But I guess he doesn’t want to look “stuffy”. I read the Ryan attire in the interviews as saying: “No nonsense, not stuck up with myself. Not constrained by my jacket, I want to be comfortable.” Someone on the (R) side can give him better advice, but let’s not go overboard with Ryan’s wardrobe, OK? I think Ryan is much more concerned with the federal budget deficit into 2030 and beyond than he is about whether his jacket is fitting a little too loosely.

    Third:

Song of the day is “Walking on the Moon” by the Police:

Be careful of the insertion burn if you want to walk on the moon. The only reason in the world we were able to do it was the Apollo Flight Computer. When Romney talks about 43 years or whatever, it was the guys with the glasses and the pocket protectors – not the mohawks – who brought us there. The mohawk guys are OK I guess, but I’ll choose the pocket protector dudes every time.

I want to make sure everyone realizes I want them to get their advertising click-throughs regardless of how silly the writing was:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/16/fashion/a-look-at-paul-ryans-fashion-sense.html?_r=1&ref=fashion

Here’s a hint to the writer: Paul Ryan does an OK job with his fashion and we aren’t electing him Vice President this year because of his *fashion* sense. We’re electing him Vice President this year because he cares much more about whether the next generation’s kids are going to be able to balance their clothing budgets with their entitlement obligations.

    Quote from Obamacare:

Subtitle G?Protecting and Improving Guaranteed Medicare Benefits
SEC. 3601. PROTECTING AND IMPROVING GUARANTEED MEDICARE BENEFITS.

    (a) PROTECTING GUARANTEED MEDICARE BENEFITS.?Nothing in the provisions of, or amendments made by, this Act shall result in a reduction of guaranteed benefits under title XVIII of the Social Security Act.

    (b) ENSURING THAT MEDICARE SAVINGS BENEFIT THE MEDICAREPROGRAM AND MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES.?Savings generated for the Medicare program under title XVIII of the Social Security Act under the provisions of, and amendments made by, this Act shall extend the solvency of the Medicare trust funds, reduce Medicare premiums and other cost-sharing for beneficiaries, and improve or expand guaranteed Medicare benefits and protect access to Medicare providers.

SEC. 3602. NO CUTS IN GUARANTEED BENEFITS.
Nothing in this Act shall result in the reduction or elimination of any benefits guaranteed by law to participants in Medicare Advantage plans

Question: Note a phrase in part (b), “this Act shall extend the solvency of the Medicare trust funds…”

Does the 700+ billion dollars that was cut from Medicare by the Obama administration extend the solvency or reduce it? If reduce, do we have direct evidence substantiating this?

(I know, I know…it’s the Obama admin we’re talking about here. But this is what the admin put into law that they would do.)

I suppose if Biden were a little smarter, he could have told the crowd, “They’re going to concatenate y’all.”

Okay, that’s probably a stretch – on Biden being smarter as well as the use of the word of the day.
