Today is August 24th. • On this date in AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted, famously destroying the city of Pompeii. The buried city was lost for over 1700 years, until the remains were rediscovered in 1748. Among the ruins were people frozen in ash, art works, pottery, and of course, Ron Paul campaign materials. • Also on this date, in 1959, Daniel K. Inouye was sworn in as the first full member of the House of Representatives from Hawaii. He became a Senator from Hawaii 4 years later, a post he holds to this day. Inouye is famous for being the most senior member of the senate, and for successfully arguing that his birth certificate is not, in fact, Pompeiian. • On this date in 1968, Keith Moon of The Who drove a Lincoln into the pool of a Holiday Inn. The Lincoln subsequently raced Michael Phelps, but was disqualified in the wake of allegations that it was using premium gasoline. • And finally, today is 'Pluto Demoted' day, a day when we remember the relegation of Pluto to the class of dwarf planet. Said Neptune at the time "no Pluto, it really isn't the motion of the ocean."
