The Rick Perry I Know

A little over a month ago, I had the opportunity to put together a video honoring Veterans Day to be shown at BlogCon 2011 in Denver, Colorado. In conjunction with FreedomWorks, I was able to get a handful of questions about Veterans Day over to a handful of politicians to have them say thank you to our troops. Because of technical difficulties, it wasn’t actually uploaded and shown to anyone until one day after Veterans Day much to my disappointment. You can view that video here and I hope you do.

But there was another part of this work that hasn’t been shown. When I sent the word out to these various politicians and policy makers that I wanted them to talk about veterans, I gave some very simple instructions: “Please be yourself, try not to do it scripted, and just basically tell me your thoughts on our troops.”

Out of those who responded, all but one sent me great videos that were about a minute and a half in length and mostly scripted. The one that sent me something different was Governor Rick Perry. His was a bit longer than a minute and a half. Eleven minutes actually. And I was so taken by how natural and patriotic he came across when he was off script and not trying to ‘zing’ another candidate that I immediately knew the footage had to be seen.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and that, if nothing else, it will give you an insight into a man that is much more complex than the narrative being put out by his opposition.

I’ve often talked about what I think of as the “Rule of Two” when it comes to Republican candidates. This rule states that for each election year, the media requires two types of Republican candidates: an idiot and an evil guy. Which one is the presidential candidate and which one is the vice presidential candidate is irrelevant. All that matters is that both are in attendance.

Don’t believe me? Take a look back.

Nixon/Agnew: Nixon was evil, Agnew was dumb. (and then of course Ford took over and he was even dumber)

Reagan/Bush: Reagan was dumb, Bush was evil.

Bush/Quayle: Bush was (still) evil, Quayle was dumb.

Dole/Kemp: Dole was dumb, Kemp was evil.

Bush/Cheney: Bush was dumb, Cheney was evil.

McCain/Palin: McCain was evil, Palin was dumb.

Seriously, they aren’t even that original. It’s the same template every time. This time, it’s “Rick Perry is an idiot!!” How, after all this time are my ideological brethren still falling for this nonsense? How have they come to the conclusion that bad debate form is the equivalent of “can’t govern” even when all evidence shows the opposite?

When did we become a party that picks winners based on their ability to talk a good game in spite of any evidence to the contrary that they would actually govern a good game?

Why have records ceased to matter? Why are we letting the media “debate-coverage” us to death? Why are we choosing “zingers” over substance?

Rick Perry is, in my opinion, the best man for the job. Everything that I’m hearing to refute this idea boils down to the idea that he won’t win in a debate against Obama. Ok? This is how we choose leaders now? Whoever can totally argue like, the best and stuff?

Sorry. I’m not going to board the smooth talker express. I can promise you that if you put me on stage with Obama I’d rip him to smithereens in a debate. I also promise you that I’d be a terrible President. Merely expressing conservatism is not enough. You have to live it.

Rick Perry may not be the Newt Gingrich of presidential candidates, but, as silly as it may sound, I’m not interested in hiring a candidate. I’m interested in hiring a President. For me, that President is Rick Perry.

    Great video Ben!!!
    Thanks

is hard to come by, but you got it ben.

BTW, anyboby got some mobile #’s of RP supportors in IA? want 2 get text chain for support going.

    • gator_hoo

I am amazed at how, despite conservatives’ distrust of the media, they completely buy into the media’s narratives.

People convince themselves Perry can’t make the conservative case, but texas’s economy says otherwise.

  • http://www.changeforrickperry.org louisianapatriette

“Merely expressing conservatism is not enough. You have to live it,” may be the best statement I’ve read in a while. It sums up precisely why I don’t (and never can) support either Romney or Newt. Rick Perry has lived conservatism in his 11 years as Governor, even when it hurt. I also don’t think he’s in this for himself; it he had his druthers, he’d be staying in Austin. I believe he’s really the only candidate who’s running simply for the sake of serving his country. And that means more to me than the most eloquent fact-laden speech.

Show me you’re more than a talker, and I’ll give you a second look if Perry DIES or drops out before the end of primary season. Otherwise I’m sticking with the only guy who’s really gotten dirt on his hands and put his hand to the plow, come what may.

  • carmen

This video is great! It’s a sad state of affairs that the BEST candidates in today’s political world are the ones who “sound” right or “look” right. I dare say that Romney and Obama would be the logical choices if the Presidential Election were instead “Let’s Pick America’s Next Leader” – a reality show hosted by Donald Trump.

I was a fan of Cain (who, say what you want, was pretty plain spoken and seemed quite genuine and also was a problem solver) and am still hoping (against hope, it seems :( ) that Perry can gain some momentum.

I’ll happily vote for Newt or Mitt if it means beating Obama – no question. But it will hurt knowing we could have done so much better.

Should Perry not be the eventual nominee, I hope he continues in his success as Governor and will use this opportunity to hone his skills so that he can offer his services to the nation again.

  • cheetah2

    Thanks for this video.

  • gmscan

I hate it that I have allowed the NY/DC media to determine how even I think about the candidates. But I have. Non-stop media has that effect. I will support any nominee but I think I love this man.

  • jgge

that Perry is going to be the nominee despite what the polls are saying now. We shall see.

    • http://www.changeforrickperry.org louisianapatriette

Just teasing, jgge, I’m with you all the way :D

      • jgge

the most qualified of all candidate and by far. Thank you for supporting Perry :)

  • wbf

Gov. Perry has my vote. Your post was a wonderful encouragement today.

  • gjohnson

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

  • bzip

Thank goodness. That is Perry, a true honorable man with good values and principles. Say what you will but at least I know Perry won’t sell us short.

This is what we needed, some positive reinforcement and support. If we truly want a good conservative with good morals and principles we are going to have to work for and we are going to have to be supportive of that person – not by turning our backs on that person and on our principles.

    Thank you Ben.

  • texasroots

    Amazing video.

  • theone3434

Most of the questions posed to him were about his personal experiences and in regard to his family. Did you ask the same type of follow up questions to other candidates and they just refused to answer? Did they just answer the first questions (Perry took roughly 1:45 secs to answer that)?

The reason I ask is that your opening remarks regarding the video make it seem as if the other candidates just sent back their individual comments regarding “how they feel about the troops” but Gov. Perry’s Q&A session is much more intricate than that (again, a lot of personal questions). This is obviously a great insight to who and what has shaped Gov. Perry’s life. I just want to make sure we compare apples to apples before implying that every other candidate refused to answer any additional questions or at the minimum, each were granted several personal follow up questions similar to Gov. Perry.

    • Ben Howe

All I said was what I put into the post:

“Please be yourself, try not to do it scripted, and just basically tell me your thoughts on our troops.”

They took it upon themselves to add the amount of substance that they did.

      • theone3434

I guess I should take it that Rick Perry’s people were the ones asking the questions in the video, then? If so, absolutely outstanding.

  • romansdaughter

I am with you . Rick Perry is someone who I can trust and who loves our country and wants to see us prosper again.

  • proud2btexasmom

I hear how Gov Perry will lose in a debate with Obama because he isn’t articulate enough…. I think of Moses!

I would run through hell with gasoline cans to vote for Rick Perry.

Had you read the little story over at Hot Gas, the day after they had an open registration? I think it was Morriessy said that after Perry called them Hot Gas, they thought of changing their name to Hot Gas, but for all kinds of reasons couldn’t. I understand at least two dozen people wanted to register using the name Hot Gas. Too funny.

Hot Gas has another open registration day again tomorrow.

For taking the time to put this video together. I’ve been a Perry supporter since he got into the race and your video only strengthens my commitment.

To all RedState readers in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina:

Please take the time to get this video in front of your friends and neighbors. Email it. Get it up on your Facebook page. Show it at your next Tea Party gathering.

We do NOT have to settle on a less-than-conservative candidate. Rick Perry CAN beat Barack Obama in the general election. But he needs strong showings in the early primaries to get there.

    A couple items from Team Perry that I think are fitting;

    Inhofe sticks with Perry endorsement

“?The reason I support Rick Perry is because on environmental issues and on energy issues he?s still the best one,? he said. ?As the weeks and months go by, Rick Perry is one who has demonstrated he?s electable. Sure, he had a bad gaffe, but he?s the one I think would be most electable.?

and Sheriff Joe knows PERRY understands this. “He doesn’t just talk about it, he does something about it,” Arpaio said. “He is an honorable, ethical person with a great family. I’m here to lend all my support to ensure that he becomes president of the United States.” ?I like the governor, in fact I?ll say it right now, it?s a pleasure and an honor to endorse you for president,” Arpaio told a New Hampshire crowd. “One reason I like him is because he?s been fighting this battle as the governor. He doesn?t just talk about it. He does something about it.”

      • bfelger

He’s got us started thinking about ways to stop illegal immigration that move beyond trite, pie-in-the-sky slogans and into immediately implementable solutions for both the short and long term.

If Perry is not the nominee, I hope whoever is takes a good long look at Perry, and steals some ideas from him.

  • nativetexan41

I am encouraged to see others are supporting Gov. Perry so strongly. Ben your article was so right on and needs to been shared to everyone. I have supported Perry since he got in the race. His gaffes have been no big deal to me, I look at his character, his leadership ability and his record in Texas, he is the true consistent conservative.
I encourage all Iowans to come out on January 3 and support Gov. Perry.

    PERRY 2012

  • onemovoter

This just goes on to reinforce what I found on Rick Perry about his personal life. Perry is consistent in both his political life and his personal life. People complain that Republicans aren’t consistent enough in sticking to their stated principles. You won’t have to worry about this with Perry.

I’m not sure if anyone has been keeping tabs on what Trump has been saying about all of the GOP candidates. He has said that he hopes the GOP voters will pick the right one. His descriptions of each candidate has been telling if you listen carefully. The only one he’s shown respect for is Perry. Trump knows what it takes in politics to get things done, the type of personality needed to fix things. It’s why I think he’d like to back Perry by the time Iowa comes to vote. If Perry is polling high enough by that time I think he will endorse him.

  • nancysabet

and he is not reading offf a telepromter, is coming from his heart. That is why I love Perry and I am proud of him. It will be an honor to have him as our president.

  • pj2012

about Gov. Rick Perry. From the moment I did my research on him I knew he would make a great (leader) president. I still do, and always will. Thanks for the video… it reveals the heart of Rick Perry. A humble honest and insightful man willing to serve this great nation, not for the glory or self-aggrandizement of one’s self but from a sense of serving something greater than one’s self… a call of duty.

  • westcoastpatriette

Governor Perry is a solid conservative stool–fiscal, social, defense. He does not just talk the talk–he walks the walk. Please conservatives. Don’t be duped by the establishment who is working hand in hand with the media to sabotage Perry and make him look like an idiot.

His ads are brilliant and stirring and I have no doubt he would defeat Obama if we nominate him. It should be obvious to all of us by now.

Neither Newt nor Romney come close to Perry in terms of embodying everything America needs right now. Trust is everything. Why would you risk nominating a person that your gut tells you you cannot trust?

  • 1bunny

Big news from the Texas Comptroller yesterday:
Texas is now projected to collect $82.7 billion in this 2-year budget cycle, up from the $81.1 billion being spent. The result: $1.6 billion in surplus.
Texas closed the 2010-2011 budget cycle with a General Revenue balance of $1.1 billion.
Texas’ Economic Stabilization Fund (ESF), or Rainy Day Fund, is now projected to have $7.321 billion at the end of the 2-year budget cycle.

While Obama has endorsed job killing regulations and raising taxes and taking funds from some (the taxpayer) to give to others. Gov Perry did not raise taxes, he fought job killing regulations and he did not raid the rainy day fund (despite being pressured to). He actually decreased the budget for the first time since WW2. All big reasons to support Perry for president.

Ben thanks for posting this video of Perry it just reinforces why I want him as President of the US.

    • circlegranch

I’ve drawn a parallel to Perry and Tebow for many weeks now. When everybody is leaving the game early because it seems over, something very magical happens. An invisible angel lands on Tim’s shoulder and he prevails. Won’t happen every week but nobody has an explanation for what is happening (except for we Christians).

Buckle up, pray alot and get ready to watch Rick Perry take Iowa, not by storm, but by faith, truth, common sense and a connection to the average person.

Does anybody know how to contact Joe the Plumber? We need him ridin’ that Perry bus! Same with Sheriff Joe, Ted Nugent and plenty of those new vets that have signed on. Doc, you seem well connected with influential people–make some calls!

Do YOUR part. If you can’t or won’t make the commitment to show up in IA and help Strike Force, get yourself to www.rickperry.org and donate so his message reaches as many people as possible. Every dime donated right now goes straight to the IA effort.

It’s not over. What are YOU willing to do to turn this thing around?

According to Public Policy Polling, Gingrich is leading Iowa with 22%, Paul 21% and Romney 16%. The more interesting tidbit was Newt’s favorable ratings are going down significantly. Last week, it was +31, this week it’s +12.

I see the long-awaited for window for a second look at Perry perhaps opening up a bit. This may be the best and last chance so I hope Team Perry is ready.

    • conservativemusician

How in the world can Paul be ahead of Perry at 21%? For goodness sakes, Paul thinks the U.S. is responsible for 9/11. And 21% in a conservative state like IA really think he would make a better commander-in-chief than Perry? It really makes no sense at all, but then again, Paul supporters generally don’t make much sense.

      Perry 2012!

I have found Ben’s thread to be very inspiring. So along those lines I would like to continue that inspiring theme by posting two video’s. One is a new ad that bunny1 alerted me to: Momentum.

Perry is up 6 points since Saturday’s debate and with another strong showing this week on the Fox News debate Perry may be coming full circle with his support in the Hawkeye state. Here is the latest Real Clear Politics link…

I’d say that is a pretty good position to be in.

Funny thing I just thought of is that many hold their breath to see if Perry is going to have a bad debate, or make another gaffe, but the Newt supporters have to be on the same pins and needles waiting to see if he inches closer to that self-destruct button he is reportedly never more than 6 inches away from.

I am very proud of Governor Perry. He has been my Governor for several years. I moved to Florida last year, but am really partial to Perry. I hope that the FOX personnel conduct themselves better than they did previously. Chris Wallace has been very hostile to Governor Perry. Perry did well in the interviews despite the hostility. I hope the debate Thursday is not a disaster in terms of gotcha questions and bad behavior from FOX

In my opinion, the DC/NY National News Media derive their power from schmoozing with people with real power and that they see regularly. That’s how they have an “in.” That would be people who work in the NY – DC corridor. They are bubble boys. Rick Perry is an outsider and doesn’t get their love because he doesn’t make them powerful. His power as the Governor of Texas doesn’t rub off on them. That’s why they were so willing to court Paul Ryan, a good man but one with zero executive experience. It’s why they also floated names like Chris Christie, George Pataki and even Mayor Bloomberg (of all people) , It’s why, a few years ago, they gave a serious look at George Allen. George Bush was known to them not as the governor of Texas but as the son of the former President. They see McCain all the time. It’s because they all work in the NY/DC bubble and rub elbows more frequently than they do with some governor from Texas. I’m waiting to see if Fox News bring up Romney’s old “progressive” video. Doubt it. Go, Rick Perry!

  • center77

we will have the farmer that Erik talked about, with the story of crashing the campaign, come back, which he has done before, outsider with a plan to change Washington. Stellar record on jobs creation, service to the country. The story alone would give us a powerful selling point when it comes to taking on Obama. But some think debates are the thing. Now even his non slick politician label would allow us to label Obama a culture corruption guy, solyndra, not with Newt. We cannot talk about that because we will have lost all credentials to talk about the lobbying, the power for profit. It’s not the thing we should try to win with.

  • center77

This alone may be a good enough reason to make Perry president. I do not know if anybody has already posted this, so I though I would just go and do it.
