Obama Campaign Requested Birther Jokes

Some politicos are upset about a joke that Mitt Romney made today at President Obama’s expense.

Romney: ?I love being home, where but the both of us were born. No one asked to see my birth certificate. They know this is where we were born and raised.?

The Obama campaign was immediately flabbergasted that Romney would sink so low, releasing this statement.

?Throughout this campaign, Governor Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them. It?s one thing to give the stage in Tampa to Donald Trump, Sheriff Arpaio, and Kris Kobach. But Governor Romney?s decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America.?

Greg Sargant of Wapo had strong words for Romney’s behavior:

Of course Romney fully believes Obama was born in the United States. But in a way, that?s the point ? he?s still willing to dabble in birther humor, either to rev up his base by proving that he?s willing to take it to Obama or whatever, or for a cheap laugh, or for some combination of the two.

Maybe this will get chalked up to Romney?s awkwardness and get dismissed, but it looks to me like a major mistake. Coming just after days spent debating Todd Akin?s ?legitimate rape? remark, this is again a reminder of the extreme voices in the GOP, which Romney has at times been slow to denounce. And it seems less than presidential, to put it mildly. The fact that uncomfortably large numbers still believe Obama has perpetrated an elaborate plot to fake his birthplace and ascend to the presidency illegitimately is a pretty damn big deal.(emphasis mine)

Twitchy has a full list of outraged talking heads.

So basically everyone, including Obama, is pretty upset about this incredible affront on Obama’s birth in spite of Romney’s continued and consistent position that he is in fact a citizen born in the United States.

But really, Romney was just following the Obama Campaign’s own instructions as seen on their website store where you can purchase a coffee mug with Obama’s birth certificate printed on the side. Their description makes clear that birther jokes aren’t only ok, they want people telling them.

MADE IN THE USA MUG

There’s really no way to make the conspiracy about President Obama’s birth certificate completely go away, so we might as well laugh at it — and make sure as many people as possible are in on the joke. Get your Obama birth certificate Made in the USA mug today.

Thanks for having a good sense of humor OFA. I’m sure you appreciate Governor Romney playing along with your joke.

Every word not about the economy gives the undecided voters a chance to think about other things. Stay on message.

    • streiff

      it really isn’t hard.

Voters get bored much more easily than they get confused or distracted.

      • tnfriendofcoal101368

Assuming voters are morons, incapable of breathing without constant reminders has never been a long term success strategy. If you say Mitt Romney or Barack Obama or MSM can distract voters from the their jobs and their taxes and the cost of the food on their families table, in affect you are saying they are so moronic, they would forget to breathe without constant reminders. I know people like Chuck Todd and Rachel Maddow constantly spew this because they believe it but in this like most things, they are wrong. Ronald Reagan’s greatest strength was more than any politician in my life time – he treated voters like they were the adults in the room. Bill Clinton’s greatest was he dog trained himself to care about what voters cared about and didn’t pretend they cared about something else (that and he had a unique ability to claim credit for other’s accomplishments and pass them blame for his failure).

      • tnfriendofcoal101368

Romney stabs people from the front…

        • texasref

And Romney is right in his implication that we shouldn’t have had to ask for YEARS for Obama to provide his birth certificate, even granting it as being authentic, which a comprehensive investigation has proven it is NOT.

This is not about whether the president was born in Hawaii, but rather the double standard of the media getting all enraged at Romney’s quip–where was the outrage at Obama’s long delay in providing his birth certificate? Where is the outrage at the fact it is a forgery?

I’m not trying to resurrect the birther issue as a campaign issue (that ship sailed away in 2008), but today’s reaction to Romney’s perfectly fine comment just illustrates the double standard, and that’s the issue I’m just shaking my head about here.

      • emptybucket

group is so immature and thin skinned it is almost unbelievable that any of them ever made it in the political world. To me they almost all seem as if they are about 13 years old.

Not only can we walk and chew gum, we can articulate our views with resorting to name calling.

Thought Mitt’s joke was funny, poor Obama…how dare we question where he was born.

    • kentucky

Right now the worst case scenario is that it will be a 50-50 election. Lets not increase the chances of the worst case scenario.

    • Crash71234

      Genius!

      Watch the bamster’s head explode!

      • tlhoward

will be all over the news tonight, stepping again on Romney.

He announced he’s staying in. I think it’s time to find dirt on him.

    • macchat88

If Obama’s people can dish it out, then they better be able to take it!

If the political arena is too tough for Obama campaigners, then they better take their ball and go home. Where is that anyway?

The truth is NECESSARY even if it is embarrassing sometimes.

If you’re going to claim something and then later comments from yourself as well as family and friends implicate otherwise it is better to own up.

No one can be serious about accepting a doctored Birth Certificate. Quit breaking the law (falsifying legal documents) and show the real one. Show the real school transcripts while your at it and how you visited Indonesia when there was a shut out of Americans at the time.

  • maestro7

…to be rational and adult enough to hold more than one conversation about one or more controversial (or not) topics at the same time?

Or, even worse, we don’t recognize a good joke when we see one. As in, why couldn’t Mitt simply be joking with the eligibility issue? Who’s more uptight about the subject than Obama supporters?

It’s funny. When did a question of birth certificates regarding presidential eligibility become such a polarizing issue, especially if it’s such a non-issue? That’s a rhetorical question, for those who take themselves too seriously to tell.

Maybe the worst thing is this — when did *any* question regarding a President or presidential candidate become so radioactive that it cannot be asked (outside of the concept of whether they’re aliens (as in, the space kind), which should be asked under the auspices of the National Enquirer, et al.)?

I guess, only in the age of Obama.

    • streiff

are the same ones who’ve complained every time we’ve taken on one of the Administrations narrative building attacks. We aren’t hearing about Seamus on the roof, and until this weekend we had killed the “war on women” ridiculousness.

Ben is right to go after this one.

      • tnfriendofcoal101368

Both of her points were spot on as this has proved. Her first point was Romney is actually very good at humor and it is a more natural way for him to connect to people than the warm, fuzzy stuff that Bill Clinton used to do. Second, Barack Obama has absolutely NO sense of humor and his ego can’t stand to be the butt of jokes. It drives him batcrap crazy. As John Wayne said: “In his line of work, he ain’t got a right to be angry”.

        • streiff

Since Ryan has come on board Romney has loosened up quite a bit. He’s actually pretty good delivering a joke… largely because it catches you by surprise. More of this will help his “likability” numbers.

The people upset over this would have really been angry at Reagan during the 1980 campaign.

          • Jeffrey Malbis (malbis)

streiff, I agree. Since Ryan was announced, Romney seems a lot more relaxed and natural. Obama, on the other hand, seems increasingly strident and negative–good article about the change in Obama’s mood and appearance in one of the Brit papers today (I forget which one, unfortunately).

Obama seems worried and on the ropes. Romney is beginning to look more confident. I wouldn’t say “Reaganesque” at the moment, but if the humor comes through in the debates and Obama responds like…Obama, then we might get some sort of mini-there-you-go-again moment. Hopefully.

This is way preferable to the image Romney has had up until now, and I don’t think anyone is going to seriously buy the spin that Romney has suddenly become a birther.

          • Locked and Loaded

Their days are numbered. In that there is cause for hope.

Who knows, maybe one day high school kids will be learning about the 3 R’s – Reagan, Romney, and Ryan – or, if not Ryan – whoever has to clean up the next Carter/Obama-syle devastation.

          • chbroussard

green projectile vomit. These Dems are losing it and it’s only August.

          • tlhoward

see him, but if the networks only show that clip and nothing else, which is what I expect them to do, then it was a net loss because independents won’t be won over by birther jokes.

Only Ronald Reagan in my lifetime was a man capable of joking and coming off sounding like a beloved uncle at the Thanksgiving dinner table as he zinged his opponent.

(I think Joe Lieberman has that quality too. He just seems to nice a person to be mean.)

  • absdoggy

It’s one thing for the Obama campaign to make fun of the birthers with a stupid coffee mug. The birthers deserve to be made fun of.

It is quite another thing for Mitt Romney to play up to them like this. This is not even remotely funny. Nor was his other stupid statement this morning about how big business is doing just fine, just like Obama said a month ago.

I just don’t get it. How did we get here? This election should be a no brainer across the board. A runaway for Republicans, just talk about the ISSUES.

Instead, we have this, cock-up after cock-up. One month after all the Bain idiocy, he finally writes a column in the WSJ today with what he should have said, but no. Then the whole taxes fiasco, which will now be resurrected by Obama with “no one’s ever asked me about my tax returns, because I released them” – great, we’re back to this. Then the whole Joe Soptic ad idiocy, which somehow turned into an endorsement of moving to MA if a private equity firm puts you out of a job. And now, Akin’s idiocy followed by more of Steve King’s idiocy, followed by this idiocy.

I’m done with it. William F. Buckley must be spinning in his grave, I know my head’s spinning. Perhaps this gets me banned here, so I’ll just read from now on, but I’m voting for Gary Johnson. I will not support this crap any longer.

    • streiff

I think it was a good jab.

And we don’t do third parties, especially those headed by idiots, here. There are enough idiots in the two major parties,

      • thethinman

but then I laughed at the main stream medias immediate making donkey butts of themselves. If they were doing their job – this wouldn’t be coming from the next President of the United States but from them. they’ve lost their sense of blood hound and getting to the bottom of this “transparent” personage that is occupying the White House with his feet on the furniture.

If it’s a “low blow” – well the person it’s about is pretty low, often bent over before foreign kings and despots.

    • wintermute

when you think your candidate isnt going to win is to take your vote and vote for someone who definitely isnt going to win anything.

You were going to vote for Gary Johnson anyways.

Technically, a vote for a third party is the same as half a vote for both the republican and the democrat.

The final paragraph is the clincher, though. Say hello to the blam stick, and buh-bye to RS. (OK, I’m not a mod, but I can certainly see the future for you – or maybe already the past…)

    • daniel22

you know as well as everyone else that your “protest” vote will just servee the Obama teams purpose. A recent example would be the Akin debacle in Missourri. McCaskill supported Akin throughout the primary just so he could torpedo himself. It worked well as you should see. So go ahead and do what Obama wants.
By the way I liked the joke it even had the punch line on pace which is a hard thing to do. Relax, Romney and Ryan are showing some confidence so get over it and yourself.

    • camurd

If you going to make a worthless statement with your vote, that only you will know about, then go ahead, let the adults with a sense of humor carry the day!

And let me know when you fine a perfect person running for office, good luck!

Romney/Ryan 2012 – the path to recovery and renewal for American’s future

    • thethinman

on yourself and the American citizens when Obama has enough votes to remain in the office. Silly people going ga ga over words. There are times when you gotta lighten up – or you remain in the dark. but you do what you gotta do – it’s still a free country – for a little longer. and your choice is yours – just make sure you like the bed you are going to be laying in.

When Obama jokes about his birth certificate, it is to mock the birthers, who are perpetuating a lie that Obama was not born in the US– and even the RedState community, to its credit, acknowledges that it is a lie. Romney’s joke, on the other hand, tossed a bone to these liars at Obama’s expense.

And the resaon he got big applause for it? I sincerely doubt it was Michigan pride. A CBS poll taken last year showed that 45% of people who identify themselves as Republicans believe that Obama was born out of the country. And even lots of folks who do not really believe that have no problem finding common cause with those who do, and do not mind the use of this lie to defeat Obama. Just remember, Romney has shown he is one of these people who will ally themselves with liars to benefit themselves. If he will use lies here to win, he will use them elsewhere when it is convenient for him.

I don’t expect you fine folks here at Redstate to play up this incident for Obama’s benefit, but if Romney really wants to keep the campaign on the issues and win on his own merits, this was not the way to achieve that, to put it mildly.

    • Craigpennsylvania

And you need to learn to laugh. Romney was funny.

It appears Gary Johnson is going to get the “Can’t understand a joke” vote.

Let’s see the electoral count for that in November.

  • conservative_dan

That’s all Mitt does here. Even better that it’s at Obozo’s expense. GO MITT, GO!!! And guess what? I haven’t forgotten a bit about the p*ss poor job Obozo has done and that he must be removed from office!

  • DaveWT4

This I think is an inspired bit of trolling on Mitt’s part. Get the Progressives frothing at the mouth over what any sane rational person can see is a joke, and it will only alienate them further in the eyes of the undecideds.

    • Xasteius

in joking and instead made fun of Barry’s promises to make the oceans recede, made fun of his Julius Caesar posing with chin in the air (“Just how high can he raise that chin?” I’d have Mitt ask), I’d have asked if his Greek columns are in storage, and I’d have asked the crowd, “Just when is POTUS going to learn to pronounce “Navy corpsmen?”).

In addition I’d ask how the team that plays in “Cominskey Field, Mr. Obama’s favorite team, is doing?”

Poke fun at his arrogance and his obvious pandering to groups such as baseball fans when he said “Oh, of course, as a South Side guy, unlike Michelle, I went to Cominskey Field many times.”

The public knows he’s a panderer–use that and make sure we remind others he’s a poseur, about everything, not just leadership.

  • gmann2009

Obama’s failures, particularly to close this issue are HUGE. The document HE PRESENTED is FAKE. Period. No debate at all.

In addition, there are issues he has refused to answer. So until the Liar in Chief does this, he can suffer the consequences..he has brought this entire process upon himself!!!

How do I know it is FAKE? I am an Adobe document professional.

    • streiff

      Now that IS funny.

    • texasref

even though Sheriff Joe’s investigation proves the document is a forgery, because otherwise all you can do is cry at the travesty this man has made of the constitution from the day he announced for president right on thru to his last day in office.

Just laugh along, and let it go. You’ll be happier, and you won’t have streiff mocking you anymore.

We are going to win or lose this election on the economy, not on the fact that his birth certificate is a forgery. So this comment by Mitt is a tweak, kinda how Rush does his media tweak every now and then. And I love this side of him. Ryan really is bringing out the best of Mitt.

Is a pretty good analogy for how they run a country…

    • fightnright

I think Romney-Ryan are doing a pretty good job creating a balanced profile of their team, presenting their past CV and legislative achievements, general governing philosophy, and economic policy and competence, occasionally using humor acceptable to both parties.

If there is a Republican campaign deficiency, it’s their weakness in launching effective attacks on Obama’s failures in governing and leadership. They need to do better demonstrating to the casual electorate in meaningful, practical ways the profound impact those failures have on our everyday lives.

If there is a Democrat campaign deficiency, it’s their weakness in illustrating the success of their team’s past CV and legislative achievements, general governing philosophy, and economic policy and competence. That’s because they have no success in any of these areas to point to.

I’m proud to align myself with the (R) party at the top of this list. The role that humor/birtherism plays in this campaign – or outrage over it, hypocritical or otherwise – has such little importance to the average voter, it’s no wonder that the Obama team is reduced to highlighting its significance.

      • fightnright

then came back and hooked my meant-to-be freestanding post above to yours instead.

        555′s anyhow!

      • tlhoward

One meme that needs to be constantly pushed in campaign speeches and in ads is that the Obama admin ignored, dissed, and laughed at the Congressional Republicans during efforts to fashion a health care overhaul that the nation could support in a bi-partisan fashion.

Now that Ryan is the running mate, it seems that once they break from Tampa, that should be in every American home–that it is actually Obama that rejected bipartisan legislation.

The Boehner-McConnell team has been totally inept in yelling and screaming when Dems cover for Obama by pushing the theme that “Republicans wanted him to fail and so wouldn’t work with him.” (of course, if that were true, why would any voter think a second term would accomplish any more?)

The truth, one that Ryan is supremely positioned to talk about, is that over and over and over, Obama, Pelosi, Reid, refused to talk and shoved that 2700 page document down the throats of every American.

They should carry that damn thing and read from it at every stop.

      • http://www.sourceoftitle.com skymutt

…but as of a CBS News poll last year, 25% of Americans and 45% of Republicans thought Obama was born outside the US. Just because RedState to its credit has purged birthers, do not deceive yourself– this is a lie that is believed by a huge percentage of the “average voters” in Mitt Romney’s base, and I do not believe for a second that he is not aware of this.

When Obama puts out a coffee mug with his birth certificate, it is to mock the birthers and combat the lie; Romney’s joke was intended to throw a bone to the 45% of his party that believe the lie, and an unknown additional percentage who know that Obama was born in the US but are willing to find common cause with those who perpetuate this slur against Obama in order to defeat him. If Ben Howe sincerely cannot see the glaring difference, then he is blind.

  • porkandcheese

As the oldest child, I got mightily annoyed in 2008 watching Obama whine about racism then swing at his opponents while the media held them back. I just hate double standards and unfair fights. No sense crying about it, though.

We have seen both of the past sitting presidents flip the bird, and the one before that spooged all over a chubby intern. Spare us the lectures on what is and isn’t presidential behavior. It was a joke, a naughty one, but a good zinger.

It’s nice to see Romney relaxed and laughing on the trail, especially after this week with all the MO brouhaha. This destroys the wimp meme, too, and it gets everyone in a good mood leading into the convention.

On that note, I have a suggestion. Ann Romney’s speech on Monday night will be important to likewise humanizing Mitt, but the networks probably won’t cover it. Create a firestorm by dropping Huckabee and inviting Palin at the last minute and have Palin introduce Ann Romney.

  • thethinman

A joke? no, not a joke. the joke is on the American people that a man who is president and wants to continue still mush hide his past. The laugh is on Obama for not putting an end to all of this by telling the truth – and putting his records out there for the American voters to see, feel and get over it. Constant lies, putting out fake birth certificates is what brings this home the most. The man is either not who and what he says he is or he is hiding something far worse than just a birther joke.

    • thethinman

  • cwfoster

I think some good natured joking will do the campaign some good! They don’t come off as so stuffy. Besides, the reaction is laible to make the undecided/independents go “what are THEY so lathered up about?” and if the go digging they’ll find out that Sheriff Joe has determined the documents to be fraudulent (for whatever reason).

  • funwithknives

believe you me, everyone there ‘got’ the joke.

I am amazed this got posted/reported this quickly.

Progressive Protestors school-bussed in , but were kept across Commerce Road from the Rally location. A rag-tag bunch they were. They weren’t there long.

What to they all say about the joke Obama played on himself
at the press banquet earlier this year? It was right out of

convinced liberals have no sense of humor unless its their joke.

    • checkmate2012

What’s not funny is him picking that clip- notice how the skies open and it’s a miracle type birth to be rejoiced by all and the bowing of the animals to the baby lion.

Just how he feels he is to the world- yuk!

  • checkmate2012

never said a word about O or his birthplace or his certificate from the above clip anyway but now the lefty press if going beserk. Seems the crowd loved it.

Since when can’t Romney make jokes or nuances when O and Team do it in your face style ALL the time. Just last week O said again that Romney has put other things (besides windmills) on the roof of his car. Romney might as well state what O did to dogs if he makes that comment again, show the book and open to the page.

The head-spinning on the Left is faster than Linda Blair’s on MSM right now- and someone pointed out that O himself has joked about his birth certificate on the trail and in speeches. (See clip below). I don’t think the Left ever stated O Team crossed the line all these months but now Romney is sooo decisive and they again call it base strategy- code for racism.

I made a comment not too long ago that the best way to get under O’s skin is to make fun of him- he can’t stand it as nothing is humorous to him, especially when it comes to his narcissitic self.
Seems Mitt did just that and now we’ll get to see the real hatred from the Left. Should be amusing :)

defenses of Todd Akin from those on his radio show to today’s appearance on Neil Cavuto’s show. Just heard Todd Atkin’s announcement on radio that “he’s in this through November.”

In all my years of being involved in politics, never, and I do mean never, have I ever been as disgusted with two politicians who are only acting out of personal ambitions (by lying to themselves about “principles”) and sacrificing a much, much larger cause than their little egos.

Huck is hoping that his backing will put him in the lead for years from now with the social conservatives. I have always known he would try to undermine the Romney team IF something presented itself. He figures he has nothing to lose, I guess. Well, he does, for I have to believe there are millions of people like me who hold him responsible for egging Akin on.

His Cavuto interview was pure ambition on display. He had the nerve to suggest that it wasn’t Akin that was making “news”–it was the media.

OH, MIKE, do I detest you.

  • celador2

Ohhh so Romney made an aside that touched the lame stream media in their fake outrage at Romney’s unfair remark. They hammer Republicans but not one word for Biden and his y’all in chains remarks hit the airwaves with this venom level.
    .
Its best to keep this joke quiet and not keep the slander going, media mouthpieces. Keep it going if you will. The moans , portrayal of Obama as victim is tiresome. It well, makes him look less than presidential.

Times have changed since the days of the Burr – Hamilton duel when no one dared repeat what were the slanderous insults Hamilton uttered to Burr or about him that led to the deadly challenge in 1804.

To repeat a slander was the same as making the original one and everyone feared Burr’s SC kin might come to NYC and take on the slanderers. The exact trigger of the Burr- Hamilton deadly duel secret remains that to this day.

Times have changed. Robert Gibbs called Donald Trump a right wing nut and attacked him as well as Romney for embracing him for pushing birther views.

All the attention pushed Trump’s supporters to have a good laugh. Just as the Obama Biden campaign asks we all do.’

…. have never, ever totally been about issues. Low-ball humor, name-calling, slander, personal attacks, and allegations-of-whatever have ALWAYS been a part of campaigns. There’s nothing wrong in making light-hearted comments like the one Romney made.

Check out the history of the Jefferson-Adams campaign in 1800 to see some really vicious stuff.

Obama and his team must toughen up. I agree, Obama doesn’t like others to make fun of him. Only he can do that. But who in their right mind is okay with a doctored birth certificate. Own up and show us the real one. And while you’re at it show us how you qualified for a Fulbright Scholarship and your school records at all the colleges you claimed to have a degree at. And how the heck did you get into Indonesia when Americans were blocked at the time?

Telling the truth is necessary, even if it is embarrassing. Do tell.

If politics is to hard on the Obama team, then take your ball and go home. Where is that anyway?

” The fact that uncomfortably large numbers still believe Obama has perpetrated an elaborate plot to fake his birthplace and ascend to the presidency illegitimately is a pretty damn big deal.” said Greg of Wapo…..
It is a pretty damn big deal, and if Obama would stop being such a sissy about having his records made public, like every other president before him, he could make 90% of those people believe him and this issue would be left in the trash heap of nonsense issues. But as long as he acts like there is something to hide…. there will be “uncomfortably large numbers” who believe there is something hidden…. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure this out. He is supposed to be this great communicator, this great understander-er of the people… then how can this have gotten past his handlers????? Do they not understand human nature?? People are not stupid, and they resent the hell out of being treated with such disrespect.
It’s just one more head scratcher in a list that gets longer every day…..
