On Thursday in Castro Valley, California, an Amazon driver snapped.
As reported by Oakland’s Fox2, 21-year-old delivery person Itzel Ramirez pummeled a woman after a negative exchange about her package.
Vista Creek Apartments owner Doug Smith said the unidentified tenant was notified her package had arrived.
She went to the lobby, but no parcel was found.
Spotting Amazon driver Itzel, the lady asked where her item was.
Itzel replied she’d take care of it soon.
Fifteen minutes purportedly passed, at which point the woman went outside to ask again.
Doug recounted to KTVU:
“I believe the Amazon driver said something about ‘your white privilege,’ and my tenant said, ‘You don’t need to be a b—h about it,’ turned around and walked away.”
What occurred after that?
According to Itzel, she had to use self-defense.
But security footage shows a one-way assault:

The recipient of the blows — who is 67 — called 911.
She told the dispatcher she’d been struck in the face and head at least 10 times.
Speaking to KTVU, Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly indicated violent delivery people are a no-go:
“We can’t have our delivery drivers or people out there in the community attacking people, punching people in the face.”
In the relatively recent past, Americans were taught to respect their elders.
These days, we look to be lurching toward Lord of the Flies.
Rather than talk of humility and servitude, so far as I can tell, “empowerment” is all the rage.
Meanwhile, we’re seeing callous victimization — and little respect for those up in years.

Last June, a passerby cruelly shoved down a 92-year-old lady in New York:

In St. Paul, a woman was savagely kicked in the head:

And in East Harlem recently, a 61-year-old was stomped into critical condition:

Of course, this is all anecdotal.
And crime has always been around.
But in your view, does the world appear to be improving?
It seems to me we’re a culture in need, not of empowerment, but the opposite.
Back to Castro Valley, I don’t know that the customer was particularly kind.
As for Itzel, she was arrested on suspicion of battery causing serious bodily injury and elder abuse — both felonies.
Bail was set at $100,000.
Per the New York Post, Amazon issued a statement:
This (incident) does not reflect the high standards we have for drivers who deliver our packages. We take these matters seriously and this individual is no longer delivering Amazon packages.
High standards — the world could use more of that. And more of the Golden Rule.
