New Study Shows What We Kind of Already Knew - Democrats' Support of Violence Is on the Rise

Political journalist and satirist P.J. O’Rourke once described the concept of liberalism perfectly. He said, “At the core of liberalism is the spoiled child — miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied, demanding, ill-disciplined, despotic and useless. Liberalism is a philosophy of sniveling brats.” And in the case of liberal Democrats, throwing temper tantrums when they don’t get their way seems to be what they do.

Those same liberal Democrats would easily argue that the violence that took place on Jan. 6 at the Capitol was a temper tantrum. But the reason it stands out is because it does not happen nearly as often. While everyone on both ends of the political spectrum can get worked up now and then, a new study shows that the support for violence and coercion comes from exactly where Republicans and conservatives have suspected.

The study from the University of Chicago shows that public support overall for the use of force to coerce members of Congress rose from just nine percent in January of 2023 to 17 percent in June of 2023. A rate that essentially doubled in just six months. The most prevalent increase was among Democrats, where the rate grew roughly 2.5 times. Among Democrats, the rate of support for the use of force went from seven percent in January of 2023 to 16 percent in June of 2023. Interestingly, the poll states that “This growing anger parallels the Republican rise to power and proceedings in the House of Representatives.” You don’t say?

To be fair, the study showed that Republicans and Independents are not guilt-free when it comes to the use of force, but not nearly at the rate of Democrats. Republicans’ approval of the use of force rose by six percent and Independents’ by eight percent. Those who support force to restore former President Donald Trump also grew by 4.5 percent, to a total of seven percent of those surveyed. What seems to fuel Democrats’ penchant for violence and coercion is the desire to restore the federal right to abortion. The poll also stated that Republican conservative control of the court is a driving factor.

The study was conducted by Robert Pape, a University of Chicago political scientist and self-described “liberal Republican.” In an interview with The Guardian, Pape used an interesting word to describe the political polarization of the country: “radicalization.” He used the term “radicalization” in conjunction with what may have been a personal desire stating, “Things are definitely heading in the wrong direction in terms of the radicalization of the country and we need to be aware of that because there were some hopes that the Trump indictment would actually reduce support for Trump.” He also expressed concern that, should more indictments of Trump come in the next few weeks, further “radicalization” would occur. If radicalization means Trump’s poll numbers and support grow stronger, then he may very well be in for some more radicalization. Democrats and the left have yet to figure out that’s what happens when Trump gets indicted.

While Democrats will point to groups like the Oathkeepers, the Proud Boys, and even more recently, parents who attend school board meetings as terrorists, they have all but given a wink and a nod to left-wing groups like Black Lives Matter and Antifa. In the aftermath of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020, Antifa was involved in much of the unrest and violence in many American cities. Andy Ngo is a conservative journalist who has covered Antifa activity and was attacked several times by Antifa rioters in 2019. But Democrats continue to deny that any violence by their supporters takes place. In 2020, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), even after being shown images of the violence that ranged in Portland, Oregon, for months, called Antifa “a myth.” During one of those attacks, Ngo suffered a torn ear lobe and a brain bleed. That’s a hell of a myth. After the Supreme Court decision last summer on abortion, a man was charged with attempting to assassinate a U.S. Justice after he showed up outside Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home armed with weapons and planning to assassinate him.

Republicans and conservatives have known that, for Democrats, the ends justify the means for quite a while, and we are at the beginning of a presidential election cycle. If Democrats don’t get their way, heads up.
