Merry Christmas

The Gospel of Luke 2:1-20

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

…because it comes so nicely from the mouths of babes

That’s what Christmas is all about. No more, no less. No amorphous “spirit,” no self-made sense of what people ought to be, no self-made sense of what God ought to be, but…

Though he was in the form of God,
Jesus did not deem equality wit God
Something to be grasped at.
Rather, He emptied Himself,
Being born in the likeness of a man.
He was known to be of human estate,
And it was thus that He humbled Himself,
Obediently accepting even death,
Death on a Cross.

Because of this,
God gave Him the Name above every Name.
So that, at Jesus’ Name,
Every knee must bend,
And every tongue confess,
On the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth,

To the glory of God the Father.”

And that is what Christmas is all about…

(don’t ask me why it happened this way… I didn’t think I had posted it, but apparently I had. God knows.)

Amen, brother.

Christians are oft accused of being narrow minded. Well, Jesus said “… strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

We do believe we are on a narrow path. The Buddha said “many paths lead to truth.” But we believe that we come to God not by works or deeds, nor by any knowledge we may gain, nor by any mystical experience. Seekers on other paths try these methods. And we love them, too, as fellow questers.

But we believe that the baby born in Bethlehem grew up to be Jesus of Nazareth. And Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

We can’t earn our way in, learn our way in, buy our way in, work our way in, or experience our way in.

In fact, no human has control over anything in life, death, heaven, or hell, except one thing: to accept the gift of grace, or to reject it. That’s the only path to God.

Christians are those who chose to accept the gift given at the first Christmas long ago. It’s the gift we can’t outdo or undo. We can’t exchange it or regift it. It’s always there, whether we accept it or not. It is eternal, in a way none of the works, knowledge, or experience on mankind can ever be.

And no matter how many times we put it back under the tree unopened, it remains, patient, open and accepting, waiting for us to pick it up, unwrap it, and make it our own.

It is Love Unimaginable. And it’s our gift.

Merry Christmas; God has already blessed us, every one.

Amen, and
