A scary scene unfolded amidst all the other news on Wednesday after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell froze up during a presser. After nearly 30 seconds of silence, he was then led away by his colleagues, not seeming to know where he was.

Here’s the video of the incident.

It was not immediately clear what happened to McConnell that caused him to freeze up. He suffered a fall and concussion in March, keeping him out of the Senate for an extended period of time. McConnell is also 81 years old, and that was no doubt a factor.

Concern about the age of Washington politicians has been a common topic of discussion recently. President Joe Biden would be 82 years old if he is re-elected to a second term while Donald Trump would be 79. Many members of Congress are also pushing 80 or beyond it.

Unfortunately, one can’t escape old age. It comes for all, and this kind of public occurrence isn’t something the Republican Party will be able to ignore. I would assume a statement is forthcoming.
