Be Quiet Chick-fil-A, You Know the Rule!

Update: I spoke today on the radio with Wild Bill McKubby from Z-94.5, out of Baxley, GA, about the Chick-fil-A controversy and today’s Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.

It’s the age old rule, ingrained in our society since the left deemed it so: Discussing politics and religion in public is rude.  Chick-fil-A somehow missed the memo and this past week has suffered a constant barrage of attacks since their president, Dan Cathy, dared to voice the fact that his company has (gasp!) Christian values.  His unbelievable, hate-filled, bigoted, anti-gay, homophobic rant was as follows:

“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’” Cathy said. “I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”

“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that … We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that,” Cathy said.

If those radical views sound familiar to you, it may be because you’ve cracked open a Bible for more than just to find an out-of-context verse to throw in someone’s face.  Since Jesus made the declaration 2,000 years ago, Christians have never backed away from the belief that marriage is between one man and one woman.

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’  and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

~ Matthew 19:4-6

Since Chick-fil-A opened 45 years ago they have never hidden the fact that they are a Christian company.  Anyone who has ever yearned for the best chicken sandwich on the planet on a Sunday can attest that they are closed so that employees can have a day to themselves and attend church if they’d like.  If being closed on Sundays wasn’t enough of a hint, they play Christian music inside their restaurants.  It must have been quite a surprise for Cathy that, after all these years of open Christianity, actually verbalizing the values Chick-fil-A was built on would cause such a firestorm.  The over-the-top response was immediate, with calls for boycotts spreading across social media and the Muppets choosing to deny Chik-fil-A children their toys.  To anyone that has previously broken the rule of being quiet (unless you agree with liberals), the reaction to Cathy’s statements was worthy of an eye roll; been there, done that.  What came next, however, took the issue to a whole new level.

It started with Chicago Alderman Proco Joe Moreno who decided, in these times of economic prosperity, he would abuse use his position to block a Chick-fil-A planning to open in his Ward.  Never mind the people he’s supposed to be representing who need jobs or may actually agree with Cathy’s traditional Christian values.  Mayor Rahm Emanuel defended Moreno’s decision, stating that Cathy’s views “are discriminatory against people who are our neighbors and our residents. Those aren’t our values,” he added.  Meanwhile, homicides in Chicago have gone up 38% over the last year and, had the police department not figured out a way to fudge their crime statistics and trick the FBI, Chicago’s “values” would earn them placement as one of the most dangerous cities in the country.  Quick to follow was Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who wrote an open letter to Cathy letting him know that, in his city so representative of freedom, Chick-fil-A was not welcome; because nothing says freedom like attacking someone who dares to exercise their first amendment rights.  San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee jumped on the bandwagon last night, tweeting out a threat that he, “strongly recommends Chick-fil-A not come any closer to his city.” Fortunately for anyone that lives outside of Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco,  legal experts are in agreement that efforts by government to block Chick-fil-A from expanding their business is discriminatory and unconstitutional.

While satisfying to know that out of control government officials can be checked by the likes of the ACLU, the relief is fleeting when considering the bigger picture.  The mayors of three cities (thus far) believe it is within their power to tell a private citizen he cannot grow his business because his personal beliefs are not in line with theirs.  Put another way, liberal elected officials think they are dictators.  It shouldn’t come as a surprise, being that they are led by Obama who doesn’t appear to understand the limits of the office of the President.

Cathy ended his interview saying, “We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”  Thank God, indeed, we still do live in a free country and if you’d like to support Chick-fil-A against those that wish to stifle their rights, Mike Huckabee has arranged a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” on August 1st.

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,” and, “Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute you and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. A short while ago, Chick Fil-A held their annual ‘Cow Appreciation Day,’ with phenomenal success. The hard core left has their panties in a wad over this company. WHy don’t all us us who believe in the First Amendment eat here and over fill their registers, and blast all sales records. Nothing says success like a ringing cash register.

    • Stan(ley) Pruss

I’ve eaten twice at Lombard Chick-Fil-A recently and they are selling lots more than before the controversy. Remember the “Boycott Rush’s advertisers” drive & how that worked. Several other customers said they were supporting Chick-Fil-A against the gay intolerance.

  • fightnright

…and remind the haters that theirs is the side which stands proudly against Christianity and family/religious values as cornerstone of culture instead of Big Brother.

How the left can plainly observe the correlation between human misery and breaking any or all of the commandments – and then choose to not only pretend no such relationship exists, but to encourage others to live their lives in defiance of these universal and Divine laws, never fails to mystify me.

You can fight to defy the Ground of Reality by trying to pull the branch of a tree against its natural path of right growth, but after all of your straining, that branch *is* eventually going to snap back in your face. Thanks but no thanks. As if working against God’s will can ever be rewarding to any one.

They’ll be “energized” for about a week, then they’ll find something else to get outraged about.

Yes…the way we spur job creation is by forcing job creators to…pay menial labor MORE.

Honestly, these people keep digging their own political graves. Sometimes I think we would do well to just stand back, laugh, and point :)

        • Repair_Man_Jack

Nobody in the GOP offered an amendment raising it to $100/hr just to make them have to explain why that wasn’t such a smart idea.

          • APA Guy

Dems have tried this crap to distract and divide for years. The only time they gain any traction is when we make their tricks front-page news.

House Dems are staying on message i.e. attacking Obama on his record…and that’s a very great thing :)

It was so busy the manager was outside directing traffic, and there were two employees at the drive thru line taking orders. And you know what? I got my order in a very timely fashion, and it was correct and tasty.

#1 combo, no pickle, sweet tea, light on the ice. Heck yeah!

I can’t wait to get every one of my clients chicken biscuits for breakfast for the next month.

          • APA Guy

No mayo, though the sweet tea sounds good :)

          • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

            for what you get.

Now on the other hand, I could eat at Popeye’s Fried Chicken literally all damn day long!

          • aesthete

Nice thing about the military is that, for the larger bases, you’re almost always bound to find a Popeye’s.

          • streiff

nothing like that and their fried chicken and biscuits to bring a night of drinking under control

          • gretchenstreetman

I nearly shot coffee out of my nose laughing when I saw this re: a night of drinking. Popeye’s biscuits = magic. Thanks for waking me up on a Friday afternoon. You’re much too funny for your own good! ;)

          • aesthete

Popeye’s is one of the few places that tasted good sober or drunk, back when I wasn’t as straight-laced as I am now.

          • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

go have some Popeye’s. Sounds like a blast!

          • Jack_Savage

And watching the short order cook in action was utterly fascinating if you were in the right frame of mind.

          • aesthete

that tasted fantastic when you were half-drunk, and is absolutely terrible otherwise.

          • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

I love me some waffle house in the morning, tastes like victory!

Where else can you get steak eggs, covered hash browns, coffee, and biscuits, and listen to Johnny Cash on the juke box for about $10.00 ?

And I like it, cuz my unsophisticated southern palette grew up on greasy fried food. MMMMMM

          • teaforme2012

but I do admire his courage. He’s putting his money where his mouth is, when the usual stance recalls Michael Jordan and his unwillingness to bring politics into the fray, saying, “Republicans buy sneakers too.”

Then again, people don’t really pay attention to this crap for long, anyway. Is JC Penney’s the gay department store now? I don’t really care. If I’m nearby and I need something, I grab it there. I can’t imagine a lot of homosexuals, out after a night of ecstasy, poppers and anal sex and whatever else they do at their raves, who would pass by a Chick-Fil-A at 2 in the morning if they’ve got the munchies.

          • APA Guy

            Mmmm…the possibilities :)

          • aesthete

that makes you crave it fortnightly.

Ha ha! Thanks for the SIMAAM reference!

but though the left will be energized for only about a week, by not recognizing and working for truth, they will remain miserable for ever.

        • Bill S

I just about died of laughter last week. My wife and I were in Manhattan on a short vacation trip, and we went to the 9/11 Memorial, which is next door to Zucotti Park. Sitting in the park was one guy with an “OCCUPY WALL STREET” hat on, and he held a small cardboard sign (maybe 10″ x 6″) that had “NO MORE WAR” scrawled on it with a magic marker.

It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. The big, bad, world-changing OWS movement reduced to one homeless guy with a hand-lettered sign.

The Left has the attention span of a gnat.

          • fightnright

            :)

          • Jack_Savage

I was there in the dead middle of it last year and did a little self-guided tour through the encampment. Last week a friend emailed to me a picture titled “Unoccupied Wall Street” – it was a beautiful day at the park, workers were enjoying their lunch on the benches, the food truck guys were in full swing, and no one was washing their genitals in the sink at McDonalds. She also mentioned the one guy with the little sign.

To paraphrase a song from a once great country group:

“Well the weeks went by and
            Spring turned to Summer
            And Summer faded into Fall
And it turns out they were missing Occupiers
            who nobody missed at all.”

  • veritaseequitas

about is their silly political pandering and posturing to their base. No one in a leadership position and in their right mind would alienate business from their cities, especially in these tough times – oh wait, I forgot, we are talking about the left. And since O’Barry has been on his “you didn’t build that” kick, I guess they figure the federal government will take of all their needs.
Anyway, if Chicago, Boston and LA don’t want Chick-Fil-A, we would love to see more of them here in South Carolina. For fast food, it is delicious.
It is amusing to listen to the sexually confused go on and on about their rights to be sexually confused and and the neccessity to be accepted for it by others, all the while refusing to listen to anything about an alternate viewpoint and Christianity in general. THAT, of course, MUST NOT be mentioned in the public square for fear of offending their precious sensibilities.
BTW – has anyone told Rahm Emanuel that his new BFF Louis Farrakhan, hates Jews? Strange bedfellows those two.

    • renl57

Mayor Menino doesn’t want Wal-Mart in Boston either, because he says that the money that shoppers would spend at Wal-Mart would “flow out of the city.”

      That’s Boston for ya.

  • zachv

    Peace be with him..

    • Breeanne Howe

So sad that his time came at such a difficult time for the company, however one hopes that his personal life was full of joy. Solace may be found in the knowledge that he is now in the presence of our heavenly father. Praise God for that.

  • CincoSolas_del_Bronx

just emailed a spur-of-the-moment invitation for covenant members to join him and his wife for dinner at Chick Fil-A this evening; since we don’t have a local one they’re taking the subway ($$$ for the cash-strapped MTA, Mr. Mayor!!!) to one near our sister church in …

    Greenwich Village.

Characteristically and quite properly, no conscience-binding call was made for attendance, just a friendly invite for a meal, but he did obliquely add “I don’t know what we’re going to find when we arrive.”

Certainly a good meal. Perhaps, as befits our calling, an opportunity for edifying conversation with our neighbors as well.

and today I caught Rush making a point that I had not thought about. He said that when you think about it, the mayors were saying that Christians and/or Christian businesses are not welcome in their cities nor any other religious groups who believe in traditional marriage (paraphrased).

I recognized right away that both mayors actions were unconstitutional. But I had never thought about their statements in the context that Rush pointed out.

    It was a good point.

Before this “controversy,” I was already an ardent Chick-fil-A fan and customer. I already knew the company was run by evangelical Christians. Well, now I’m going to make it a point to eat at Chick-fil-A more often than usual for a while. I’ve also gone on the company’s Facebook page to leave them a note of encouragement.

    Three cheers for Chick-fil-A!

Glenn Greenwald of Salon.com, and Kevin Drum of Mother Jones, have both said that Emanuel and Moreno should back off.

    http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2012/07/rahm-emanuel-needs-back-chick-fil

They both said, “How would we progressives feel if some conservative state tried to deny a business a license to operate just because its owner was pro-choice on abortion?”

Greenwald is an interesting character. He’s hard-core left. But unlike some other lefties, he sticks with his principles even when left-wing politicians don’t. His attitude is, If we lefties thought it was wrong when Bush did it, we should be equally critical when Obama does it.

At the other end of the hypocrisy spectrum, you have someone like Paul Krugman who constantly twists himself into rhetorical pretzels trying to rationalize Obama’s cynical re-election campaign moves.
