Senator Harry Reid’s Failing Memory

Tonight was the big Nevada Senate debate between Republican Sharron Angle and Democrat Incumbent Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in Las Vegas.  Mitch Fox of PBS, the debate moderator, asked Reid a very specific question.  Reid gave a very misleading answer.

Mitch Fox:  Ok, on this next question I am going to ask for a simple yes or no in response to this question and that’s this.  Mrs. Angle you will go first.  Would you be in favor of a constitutional amendment to make English the official language of the United States.

Sharron Angle:  Yes.

Senator Harry Reid:  English is already the official language.

This is not true.  There is no amendment to the constitution making English the official language.  As a matter of fact, Reid attacked Senator Jim Inhofe’s (R-OK) proposal to make English the official language of the United States as “racist” merely four years ago on the Senate floor.

According to a May 18, 2006 story in the Washington Times:

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called a proposal to make English the official language “racist” on the Senate floor yesterday.  “This amendment is racist. I think it’s directed basically to people who speak Spanish,” the Democrat said during the already tense debate over immigration reform.  Moments later, the Senate approved the measure on a 63-34 vote. Virtually all Republicans were joined by 11 Democrats to approve the largely symbolic amendment. Immediately following that vote, the Senate approved a second amendment, declaring on a 58-39 vote that English is the “common and unifying language.”

These were amendments to an immigration bill that was never even signed into law.  One would think that the most powerful man in the Senate would remember this fact.

a 70 year old man for forgetting his basic Constitutional duties as a sitting U. S. Senator! You should be ashamed!

    /oh wait…

Oops, maybe the folks in Nevada SHOULD be ashamed of this dottering old dolt who cannot seem to remember his Constitutional duties as a sitting U. S. Senator. Or the Constitution. Or what he votes on. Or whatever – Harry Reid must go quietly into that retirement place… Please Nevada, vote this guy into retirement!

  • saintgeorgegentile

I seriously think the people of Nevada should insist that Harry release his medical records and take a battery of tests to show that the strokes he has suffered haven’t impaired his mental facilities.

  • sundesy

    Never underestimate the liberals.

The response accomplishes the goal of not having to make the amendment while pretending to support the position of making English the official language.

It struck the cord when somebody said “you have to water board the democrats to tell the truth”.

We can now substitute Reid, Palosi, Obama for lies, damn lies, statistics.

to debate with this lowly earth woman. Clearly Harry is far smarter, more clever, and vastly more powerful than Mrs Angle. What an annoyance to waste time debating her. As further insult , the debate was televised so the little people of Nevada could watch.

That was the impression I had watching Reid tonight.

is the bucket of crap he’s standing in trying to save his rear. You insult Angle’s intelligence but praise a man, who was recently interviewed and asked a question who the greatest living person is, and he answered Ted Kennedy?

      • redguynabluestate

i picked up on your snarky sarcasm. I saw Reid as condescending and put out by the whole affair, too.

    • sundesy

People of America top-bottom, and east-west are kicking out these smug attitude. They will take this attitude if it is at least right some time but it is disastrously wrong.

      Who is the idiot here?

    WAKE UP!

Joe was speaking “tongue in cheek”.

    Sheesh.

Started off with both candidates being very nervous but Angle got a head of steam from about question #2 onward and really poured it on from that point on. It wasn’t even close and the ending of the debate and him openly wondering to look for his notes was an appalling error. Even people over at Daily Kos were not happy at all with Reid’s performance. Angle should put some distance between herself and Reid after the debate tonight.

  • fideist

It is the “de facto” language but not the “official” language.

    There is a difference.

But the near-universal verdict seems to be in: Angle was very shaky at first, looked amateurish, but got better as the debate went on. Reid sucked the big one throughout, not including the fact-checking thrashing he should get from reviewers in the morning.

Even David Corn, who was born as a weed sprouting from Ted Kennedy’s anus, admitted it.

Angle’s big task tonight wasn’t to win; it was only to prove she wasn’t insane. By winning, she may have been the first candidate since JFK who could make a serious claim to having won due to the debate (1960 radio listeners thought Nixon won, but the larger TV audience saw it differently – Nixon’s “5 o’clock shadow” beard and refusal of makeup may have cost him the Presidency – the fraud in Texas and Chicago would not have been enough if he had won clearly).

The undecided and 3rd party voters with doubts should have had them erased tonight. Angle is certainly at least as mentally alert as the guy who has held the seat for two dozen years, and at least as knowledgeable.

They can now throw Reid out on his arse with confidence.

…a man with a defective memory so bad that he cannot perform his duties, or a bald-faced liar? Those are the only two choices when evaluating Reid.

“The poll was conducted by the West Virginia-based Orion Strategies for the Marshall University School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Orion Strategies has worked for both Democratic and non-partisan clients and is owned by Curtis Wilkerson, campaign manager for Democratic congressional candidate Mike Oliverio.”

That and the fact the total votes only add up to 86%, with 12% “undecided” means that this poll is not including leaners.

Manchin can’t win this race; folks in WV like him too much as Governor.

      • IJB

Combine that with the fact that it’s a Dem polling firm, and I don’t put much stock in that poll.

(And, even in this Dem poll, Manchin is *still* under 50%!)

Even if we lose the race. It is nice to have a heartburn free afternoon.

A serious swing and miss moment. And thanks Angle for keeping your cool. You did well. Down balloters thank you too.

and Liberals unanimously think of The Constitution the way most of us think of Charmin.

But to Reid’s remark that such an amendment is directed at Spanish speaking peoples: I would think that such an amendment would be aimed at those who do NOT speak English.

If one of the guiding principles of the Founders in “Ordaining and Establishing” the Constitution was to “Promote the general welfare” then what better way to do that than to see to it that everyone speaks the same language; that government transactions as well as private ones are in a plain language that everyone can understand and speak.

Far from harming those who do NOT speak English, a requirement that English become their new language along with their New National Identity would certainly be in their own best interests, n’est pas?

    Hands down Angle wins!

This debate presented an interesting contrast between the candidates.

Harry Reid proclaimed, as all democrats do, that he is ?for the middle class?, yet he lives at the top-o-the-Ritz, like a traveling Arab Sheik on vacation.

Sharron Angle is clearly ?middle class?, living in a modest Reno neighborhood, but Harry sure ain?t for her! She’s too extreme, oooohhh! Save it for Halloween Harry!

When she called for the repeal of obamacare she pointed out the generous health insurance Harry Reid receives as a Senator.

Harry apparently missed her point that the Senate exempted themselves from obamacare for a much better health plan. The ?Ritz? plan for US Senators, obamacare for us. Harry likes to live big for a poor kid from Searchlight.

Instead Harry attacks Sharron by pointing out she, personally, has good insurance through her husband. Huh? What a chauvinist!

One thing that also jumped out was Harry?s sincere belief that our money belongs to the government. If we want to keep more of it we have to show the government how we are going to pay for it. Damn the rich!

Sharron Angle made it clear that she believes our money belongs to us, and she will be on the side of us keeping more of it by cutting government spending.

I will give Harry this: he is the ONLY democrat who stood up for obamacare in this election! He could not comprehend why Sharron Angle opposses the government telling us what kind of insurance coverage we must buy.

Harry, in case you did not notice, most Nevadan’s think obamacare is a national disaster.

Congratulations Sharron, you kicked Harry?s butt all the way back to Searchlight.!
