Real Change: Faith in Government Collapses Under Obama

Cross-posted to Liberty Central

President Obama and the current Congressional leadership were swept into office on a wave of dissatisfaction with George Bush and a Republican Congress. Polls showed that Americans were open to the idea of greater government intervention as a way to address serious problems. President Obama promised that he would expand the role of government to ‘fix’ health care, Wall Street, the economy, energy, and other challenges. A new poll from the liberal Center for American Progress shows that less than 2 years later, confidence in the ability of government to solve such problems has plummeted. Faith in the federal government is now at its lowest level in the history of the poll:

Americans increasingly feel that government ‘is doing too much:’

Americans are ambivalent about whether government protects or curtails freedom, but strongly believe that it is opaque rather than transparent, and serves special interests rather than the common good:

Respondents now say that regulation of business does more harm than good – and support for regulation generally is at its lowest point since 1994:

CAP also decided to poll test a straw man: to find out what percentage favors the complete elimination of government from the marketplace. Even here, the collapse of public support for government involvement in the market is stunning. Not only is support for government at its lowest level on record, it has fallen 10 points from its previous all-time low, and 22 points from just 2 years ago:

In the last 18 months, the American people have witnessed an enormous expansion of the federal government, and they’re clearly very negative about the experience. Whereas support for bigger government was at its apex when Obama was elected, it has completely collapsed. Americans continue to believe Uncle Sam has a role in regulating some private activities – that’s no surprise. But clearly the debate over health care, the stimulus, the bailouts, Dodd-Frank, cap and trade, and others, have sown new doubts about the power of Washington to bring positive change.

Rest of the world is the same

david7134 Thursday, July 29th at 3:45PM EDT (link)

I just got back from Europe. I visited several courtries and talked to a number of people in each. I would seem that the rest of the world is waiting for Nov. just like we are in the US. I could not find a single person who had a kind word for the One.

No, it's not all those things; all the respondents are just racists. nt

No GM, GE, or any GSE for me.

Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?

I love it.

BUT … a bit unrealistic as we can see that he simply does not care what we’re talking about

How delightful

to see the arrogant purveyors of Progressive Snake-Oil, having overhyped the properties of their product, watching fearfully as their angry victims get out the tar and feathers.
The Left is very adept at salesmanship, and woefully inept at delivering on its grandiose promises. This disconnect is completely understandable, because the egalitarian message of Socialism/Fascism is emotionally appealing to the gullible, but is so disconnected from reality in practice that even the unsophisticated can clearly see the managerial incompetence of the Left.
In a country not dominated by a partisan left-wing media, these progressive flim-flam artists would be discredited for a generation. However, given the current state of ‘American Journalism’, the most despicable members of this criminal gang will probably escape the punishment they so richly deserve, and live to lie again.

But what is liberty without wisdom, and without virtue? It is the greatest of all possible evils; for it is folly, vice, and madness, without tuition or restraint.
Edmund Burke

John, this is the most erudite and concise description of “Progressive snake oil” salespersons I’ve seen; both motive and manner. Thank you.

I find this discouraging

There should have been zero faith in government long before Obama.

Trust

pamela1631 (Diary) Thursday, July 29th at 8:41PM EDT (link)

In God.
Trust yourself

But keep a peeled, hairy eyeball cocked at the Government, with your wallet stowed away.

Trust Respect and Fear.

They sure as hell don’t respect the American Citizenry , though they sure as hell are learning to fear US. Which is how it should be.
In time, respect will come…again.

Just remember to be methodical, calm and observant.
Keep notes and record how the sequence of events plays out.

Being on an anti-media kick for the time being,

Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Friday, July 30th at 6:38AM EDT (link)

I’m reminded of popular television in the 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement, esp series such as FBI and Untouchables. The notion was that local cops and government were corrupt, but feds on the other hand were incorruptible. The public was being sensitized to putting the 9th and 10th amendment away in a drawer, leaving the feds as sole arbiters of justice in America. (B-movie Horse operas of the Depression era had similar themes, where a federal marshal had far more cachet than town sheriff.) All this lad the groundwork the the Great Society and its enormous incursion into local and states right.

So what has happened as you describe, Brian, was a long time coming and quite predictable. A serious consideration by the GOP, conservatives, and here on RS as to next steps is in order, since we are at a crossroads where we either return to republican governance (little “r:”) or slip into tyranny. The Big-Government-is-good meme is dead.

I Object!

edintexas Friday, July 30th at 6:48AM EDT (link)

I object to calling George Soros’/John Podesta’s far left Center for American Progress “Liberal”. It is akin to saying Rev. Wright’s sermons are slightly outside Pope Clement XVI’s religious views.

But when the polling for such a far left outfit comes up with results like these, it does sort of point up the situation. Let’s hope the reality is even worse than the above numbers.

And I agree with those posters who state that it is disheartening to find it took Dear Leader and the Reid/Pelosi Congress to get people to this point. But better late than never.

Actions have consequences

That’s wonderful that the people now have learned that more government is not the answer. Now, we have to find out: 1.) whether all the damage can be rolled back. 2.) Whether a government this corrupt can even be “extracted” given the high probability of election fraud.

So, before we start celebrating that the people are now dissatisfied, we have to realize that these political parasites are not going to be “extracted” (like a rotten tooth) easily. They have shown that they do not care one wit about the rule of law or the constitution.

Confidence - That's the Key!

potomacbum Friday, July 30th at 9:36AM EDT (link)

The current administration does nothing to promote confidence. They appear to the rest of the country to be nothing more than a bunch of “Frat Boys” out making decisions based on which way the wind blows. It isn’t going to change as long as the policies that are being but forth are ones that go against the grain of mainstream America. Look around and start making decisions that “Help” the economy and Americans – not Hurt them…..and so far, their policies and decisions are causing a lot of pain in America that is going to be felt for a long time! The polls show the disgust America feels and with this Administrations numbers in the toilet, all “WE” can do is hold out for November and bring the country back to the mainstream – NOT this liberal social change that is being promoted today. That is the way to regain the confidence in America!

You're right. And that's why you're wrong

kiddoc99 Friday, July 30th at 12:13PM EDT (link)

I read with revulsion about your unbridled glee at the loss of faith people have had in thier government. You talk like it is a good thing. Why don’t you say the truth: that Americans have lost faith in their government because they have believed the lies the right has been feeding for the last two years. Take healthcare where people were ready for greater government intervention. 70% of physicians, of which I am one, supported a government option. But throughout the debate the right flung out endless lies and twists such as “death panels” that people actually believed. I have actually switched party allegiance over this. The governemt bailout saved the auto industry and it’s hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The economy is in shambles around the world for reasons bigger than Obama and this government, and if the Republicans were in office things would not be better because this problem is bigger than the United States. What planet do you live on? Republicans have as much to share in responsiblity for this debacle as do Democrats. Your persistence at undermining your own government is treasonous. You are not patriots. And despite your faith in God’s word you are more Pharisee than Christian because you build your foundation on lies.
