MEMBER DIARY

A $54 Billion Bailout

Our friends at Hertiage Action have a great piece out today that looks at CBO data and says that if House Republicans vote for the Highway Bill, they are basically guaranteeing a $54 billion bailout of the Highway Trust fund over the next five years.

It’s incredible that anyone would even consider this good policy, let alone conservative. The Club for Growth is advocating that members of Congress vote NO on the Highway Bill and instead call for devolution of the gas tax and highway spending to the states.

Let your member of Congress know that you support the Club’s position on the Highway Bill. Why should taxpayers be on the hook for another unfunded government boondoggle?

I campaigned for you in South Bend a decade ago and was proud to have you serving as my congressman. Keep fighting for us…we’ll do the same!

Compared to the $50 billion in 18 months ObamaCare gave to wealthy corporations and unions to offset their retiree health costs. This include $50 million to Boeing, $20 million to Caterpillar, $19 million to Proctor & Gamble, $17 million to Alcoa, $180 million to the Ohio employees pension find, $76 million to the Ohio teachers, etc. etc. It was supposed to last to 2014 but was all used up by Jan 1, 2012. Pure giveaway for no purpose. See more at — http://healthblog.ncpa.org/yet-another-failure-from-obamacare-3/

I have to say I am surprised South Bend would go for somoene so conservative. It seemed like he kept switching his seat with a Dem and having close races.

I liked him more for his name at the time than his politics. I really like that count chocola cereal.

    keep spending it without comment???

Remember, “a billion here, a billion there, pretty soon you’re talking about real money”!!!

“If we take care of the dimes the dollars will take care of themselves”.

We should curtail government spending wherever and whenever we can. Even small amounts add up, and once the voters realize how much our cutting of even small amounts helps them and the country, they will become enthusiastic for even bigger cuts. But, not cutting unless it somehow meets your approval will prove fatal to the nation!!!

Maybe the highway funding is chickenfeed, but that isn’t a reason to keep spending it. All spending – all of it – needs to pass several tests. First, is it really necessary (and that should be a stringent test). Second, could it be done more efficiently at a lower level of government (state, county, local). Finally, and maybe most importantly, is the item the spending is supporting truly a government function? In many cases I suspect the answer to at least one of these would indicate that the money shouldn’t be coming from the federal government.
