Scott Brown Goes To 11

Believe It Or Not, Brown Can Win This Thing

Too good to check: Jim Geraghty hears that Scott Brown’s campaign has internal polls showing him up 11 points:

I’m getting the sense that the folks hearing this are almost a little incredulous, but it seems every demographic and key group is breaking to Brown in the past day or two.

Geraghty also notes conflicting reports that Martha Coakley‘s internal polls show her either even or 3 points back.

At this point, it’s hard to know what to make of any of the polls, given the unique situation of a special election in January; nobody should be counting chickens for a Republican in Massachusetts, ever. But this can’t be bad news. Now, it will be up to President Obama’s visit on the Sunday of a 3-day holiday weekend to save Martha Coakley’s bacon. If she loses decisively, it may be the last invitation he gets this year.

…except to say that I refuse to get my hopes up. With Ozero going up there this would make a Brown win even more awesomely super awesome.

Teddy, Obama, and socialized health care repudiated all in a single election!

Based solely on the title, I thought this was what you were saying. Turns out he’s up by 11 literally as well.

When I first read a headline saying “President Obama to Mass on Sunday, I seriously thought it meant church to pray for those in Haiti. Anyway, maybe those in Mass should take the opportunity on Sunday to protest the healthcare bill so he can see how those outside of the beltway feel about gov’t run healthcare. Just an idea……….

  • Sundayjack

The Suffolk poll was polling the average of Monday-Wednesday . Scott Brown is clearly surging. That would necessarily suggest that his poll numbers are going UP. Today, they absolutely should be higher. It will be interesting what PPP tells us this weekend.

Barack’s appearance on Sunday is still a wildcard, but only for GOTV. There’s no one in this state who will switch or move from undecided simply because the president appeared.

    • swami7774

…might be that the Coakley negative ad assault didn’t really kick into warp speed until Tuesday. So the Suffolk poll might not catch the full effect of the negative onslaught–whatever it is.

Anecdotally, I’ve heard many Dems and indies say they’re tuning out the ad wars because they are so numerous they’re blending into one big noise.
Which is good for Brown, because he began picking up speed just before the ad war commenced. The tune-out factor also could hold turnout down, another plus.

      • Sundayjack

I’m here in Massachusetts. The number of negative ads has almost reached joke level. Fair point on the timing, though. On the other hand, the debate was Tuesday, and Martha’s Weekly Standard knockdown was Wednesday. Tough to say where things have broken.

On the other hand, the Coakley ad buys have been insane. At noon today, there was a Coakley negative ad. Immediately after it ended, Rush’s opening music kicked in. Wasted money. And yesterday, Scott Brown was on talk radio all morning, and Martha’s negative ads were playing in commercial breaks. He was literally able to rebut every negative point in real time. Crazy wasted money.

This is tough to explain because I’ve never felt this in Massachusetts, but you can FEEL momentum breaking, It’s suddenly okay to talk well about Republicans in polite society. I don’t know how that translates in poll numbers, but I just don’t see ANY vocal Coakley supporters.

        • Sundayjack

That should say “Anectdotal,” of course. Heh.

          • 6eorge Jetson

            :)

        • swami7774

Where in MA are you? And what kind of candidate visibility do you see in your area?

          • Sundayjack

But bordering on both Plymouth and Bristol Counties also. Scott hasn’t been in my area recently, but he visited my Rep Town Committee months ago. Two dozen people and a candidate working hard for every single vote. Plenty of signs sprinkled around. I’ve passed the same ONE Coakley sign on my way to work since September.

It will be interesting when I go to vote and see the number on the counter. I know so many people prepared to crawl through broken glass to vote for Scott Brown.

          • The_Rebel

in the northern section. Most people are unaware that Norfolk County is known as the County of Presidents, since it is the birthplace of four Presidents of the United States.

On my way to work in Weymouth, I see few if any Coakley signs where in 2008 there were many Obama signs on the same lawns. And there are quite a few Scott Brown signs in areas of Weymouth where I would not expect to see them.

As I said elsewhere earlier today, some Dems who don’t like Coakley are telling me they are not going to vote. These are hard-core Dems who would not vote for a Republican, no matter who that person was. Another good anocdotal sign.

This is too important to do anything but double up on all efforts to make sure we do everything possible to win. We can’t take anything for granted. There can be no ” if we would’ve only done’s” on this one. If we crush them, so much the better. We have to be “all in” on this one. This is Waterloo for Obama.

    • earlgrey

We will always be behind. We are just hoping we get lucky.

  • joliefleurs

but I sure like to think about making the Dems smell the glove.

  • Brian_Roastbeef

    Yep. DOOM.

And the prospect of Brown winning by double digits, and with Obama putting himself on the line, isn’t just DOOM. That’s downright DOOM II – an even better game in my opinion.

I really hope PPP or somebody shows some more support for this poll. I’m a little nervous about Obama heading there this weekend. Hopefully that info about him actually hurting the candidate is correct, but just in case it isn’t I’d like to see Brown have a little breathing room against any late Coakley push.

As of last week, I was figuring this wasn’t about winning Mass. as much as it was about boosting our chances against Bayh, Boxer, Gillibrand. Now it seems to me as if Brown has indeed moved ahead and that its Coakley that needs to make ground in a hurry. Now, I’ve never been one to show a lot of optimism about much of anything, but even the events of this past week have been quite impressive. I just hope it can all pay off on Tuesday, and if not… maybe it will at least be close enough to get Pataki more interested in the NY Senate race.

  • swami7774

He’s making a tour of the South Shore and Cape Cod. Good move. He owns the Cape(where I live) and must maximize his turnout there. He should do very well on the South Shore(especially Plymouth County) where there are tons of voters who are perfect recipients of his happy-warrior populist appeal.

He shouldn’t waste a lot of time in the cities; they won’t go for him, and appearing there might drive up Coakley’s turnout.

    • khayos

I can’t wait. I hope we have a surprising turnout like the tea party last year!

Also noticing a phenomenon among the thirty-somethings like myself who are really energized. Many of us have even changed our Facebook profile pictures to support Senator Brown!

    • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

Love it. From the time-stamp, it looks like you beat me to this.

  • Mayhem

The fluctuating polls is due largely to the fact that no body knows what the make up of turnout will look like. Everyone is just giving their best guess, including Brown and Coakley’s campaigns.

I’ve commented before that a 55-45 Brown win on Tuesday is very much in the cards. In fact, I think it’s likely unless the negative ads bring some Dems back to home base. We’ll see. Either way, I don’t think it will be “close.”

    • The_Rebel

it wouldn’t shock me if they cooked up some nefarious January surprise that would put Brown on the defensive in the remaining days just trying to refute it.

As I commented to you earlier today, I think you are right on the winning margin, although I predicted a 12-13 point win.

    • IJB

The one exception was the PJM/CrossTarget (R) poll which has Brown up 15%, and is too good to be true.

But Coakley has been between 46-49% pretty steadily all along in virtually all the polls on this race.

It’s Brown’s numbers that have jumped around – I suspect support for Brown in a state like MA is harder to measure.

Anyway, hopefully Coakley is at 45% and trending down – if that’s the case, she’ll lose: it’s as simple as that.

      • http://twitter/CherylAnnCA Cheryl

and isn’t that the magic number? Seems I read somewhere that if you didn’t have at least a couple results over 50% the odds are not good at all.

Scott’s had at least at or over, Rssmussen and Suffolk.

        • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

but I sure Pray Brown gets 51% somehow…. if Kennedy pulls too much away, the Libertarians may well again give away that 60th Cloture vote back just when there was this one-off chance to grab it away. That last number needs to be as close to 0 as possible.

          • The_Gadfly

If it is only 51% you can count on ACORN, SEIU, et Al to steal it.

Probably still a seismic shock to the Dems even after they steal it, but a clean win is still best.

          • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

I’ve searched the Internet for about 10 minutes and can’t find anything on this question relating to MA. Can anyone help me out?

          • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

if they think that Croakley may lose, but Brown not get the 50%+1 because of the Independent Candidate… they may change it that morning to call/force a run-off — gives them a win either way if they can drag it out. Right? lol They’ve changed so many times over the last few years to suit the needs of Democrats, sure no reason they wouldn’t pull it if they knew they needed to.

Seriously though, I don’t know the answer to that, but certainly haven’t seen/heard anyone raise that as a requirement yet.

          • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

I haven’t seen anything about this either, so not based on anything else, I’m thinking it’s just a pluarlity. After my most recent plea for a link, I continued searching but still haven’t found anything. I know Georgia, and I believe Louisianna, require a majoirty, but haven’t found the requirements for MA, even on the Commonwealth’s website.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

don’t recall where that was originally….

we can’t allow the MSM floating anything/everything to shape the turnout to effect our drive to ensure EVERY potential Brown vote gets to the Polls to overcome the legitimate and ACORN manipulation that will ensue.
Early voting – Early- (and the new Late-) Voting trends
+Psych&Bias – Voting Psychology (Bandwagon and other effects) coupled with MSM bias attempts to mold/shape turnout
+MSM challenge – The “Pretend you’re a Liberal MSM reporter (and Spin the story)” Challenge [Aug.2009 updated]

And, I had always warned with the whole BLAGO/BURRIS situations that we as Republicans tread lightly as to the verbiage we used and positions we staked out….. There will now be positions/comments from both Dems/Repubs that will come back to haunt them/us if this does become a real issue of positioning/posturing…..
    Blago/Burris
+Special Elections – All States should amend laws to require some form of Special Elections
…. and we’d better learn from it and again be careful the positions and verbiage we adopt with concern for future situations when/where roles may reverse! Which, we sure as heck all should hope, we’d never put ourselves into a position to even consider such pathetic tactics…. but again, past comments, sometimes come back to haunt!!!

Not anymore!!! Crank it up to 11 & beyond!!!

  • massreddog

A politically active liberal friend in Mass told me today that he was scheduled to work Coakley’s phone bank this week and didn’t show. He feels she has already lost the election and working the phone bank would be a waste of his time. He says he’ll be holding his nose and voting for Coakley. Hopefully, the nose holders stay home on Tuesday.

With the 60th “filibuster-proof” Senate seat now hanging precariously in the balance, I’m sure you’ll be delighted to hear that the winner will now be whoever Diebold declares it to be. The near-entirety of the state will vote next Tuesday on paper ballots to be counted by Diebold op-scan systems. The same ones used dubiously in the New Hampshire Primary in 2008, and the same ones notoriously hacked — resulting in a flipped mock election — in HBO’s Emmy-nominated Hacking Democracy.

And to make matters even worse, the notorious LHS Associates — the private company with the criminal background, who has admitted to illegally tampering with memory cards during elections, and who has a Director of Sales and Marketing who embarrassed himself with obscene comments here at The BRAD BLOG some years ago, resulting in his being barred from CT by their Sec. of State — sells and services almost all of MA’s voting machines along with those in the rest of New England.

    http://www.bradblog.com/?p=7650

    • Scope

used in the NY 23 special election? Didn’t we read that “some” of the machines were “repaired” shortly before the election, but, were not re-certified before they were used in the election, which resulted in a few thousand more votes for Hoffman after further inspection. The NY 23 election only involved a district in NY. The MA election is statewide. It would be impossible for the Brown team to have one of their people insuring certification of each individual machine in the state. Because of the importance of this election, with the Democrats desperately needing to retain their filibuster proof majority, anything and everything can and most likely will happen. It seems that the only way Republicans can win elections anymore is they must win by landslide numbers. The close elections are easily tampered with.

      • sharonmcp

The Diebold electronic voting machines to be used in more than 90% of the state’s districts are the same demonstrably unreliable ballot scanning systems that were seen being hacked in the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Hacking Democracy. The rest of the machines used in the Bay State are made by Sequoia Voting System, Inc., the same manufacturer whose machines were “misconfigured,” to switch votes in Erie County, NY’s Nov. 3, 2009 election and which have failed, and even been hacked, in a number of cases around the country.

Making matters worse, the company who sells, services and programs the Diebold optical-scan paper ballot systems to be used next week, LHS Associates, has a disturbing criminal background, and has admitted to tampering illegally with voting systems during past elections.

        http://www.gouverneurtimes.com/st-lawrence-news/54-worldnational-news/10625-easily-hacked-voting-systems-to-be-used-in-ma-special-election-for-the-us-senate.html

Short of him being caught in a keffiyeh with a suicide belt strapped around his waste, I?m not sure what could be so toxic in a state that has given us Mary Jo, as well as Barney Frank’s prostitution ring and home-grown weed that could sink him. Presumably the man knows who Curt Schilling is….

Seriously, I think people’s minds are made up, and those who are voting for him would recognize it for what it is; those who aren’t voting for him won’t care anyway.

Mind you, I hope they do try some ridiculous thing, because I think that will hurt them even more. People don’t like that sort of tactic.

Brown needs to mention that Martha would be the 60th vote on amnesty, too.

it is entirely possible that a smear will backfire because it is self-evidently a smear. For the smear to work, it has to be a credible charge coming from an opponent who at least doesn’t look desperate. The C[r]oakley campaign passed the point of being obviously desperate a couple days ago.

There are enough nitwits in this state that think the Globe is a real newspaper, and if it digs up something, it must be true.

It’s telling that, amidst a discussion of a possible last-minute smear, the possibility that Coakley could be the target is not even remotely plausible.
That’s the state of the MSM.

Bouncing around, and will likely change back and forth before the end of the day, but at the moment Brown is now ahead slightly. First time I’ve seen that throughout all of this.

Another poll, this time by ARG showing Brown up by 3. Linked at Hotair. That’s like the third or fourth that I’ve seen with roughly that result. So I’m coming to believe that the number right now is indeed Brown by 3 or 4. Kristol at the Weekly Standard seems to believe it as well.

I really think that if the election were held any time from Wed-Thursday through today, Brown would have won. Its just a matter of that fact continuing to be true by Tuesday. I don’t trust the Dems.

A Brown win in the bluest of states would suggest that NO Democrat is safe in 2010. Is it too much to hope that the GOP insiders would wake up on Wednesday and begin to realize that principled conservatives can compete in any race in any state?

Also, if Brown wins on Tuesday, is there any chance the Dems will use the reconciliation process to add “Democrats” to the Endangered Species List?
