BREAKING: Democratic CT-SEN Candidate Richard Blumenthal Has Lied For Years About Serving in Vietnam

Tailgunner Dick, Fabulist

image

The NY Times has the story; the longtime crusading state Attorney General (he was Eliot Spitzer before Eliot Spitzer was), Richard Blumenthal has sometimes just implied it, but on other occasions (including one the NYT has on video) he’s said outright that he served in the Marines in Vietnam, when in fact he enlisted in a stateside Marine Reserve unit only near the end of the war after obtaining five draft deferments to pursue his legal education. The deferments are nothing to be proud of, but they’re a common enough story among male political leaders of that generation in both parties. But lying to cover himself in the hard-earned valor of others is dishonorable and despicable, and Blumenthal has been doing it for years now in a political career that’s spanned two decades.

Should Tailgunner Dick step down? He was leading in the general election polls before this broke, and it appears that the deadline to nominate a candidate for Chris Dodd’s seat is Friday, which isn’t much time for the Democrats to find a replacement and decide whether to force him out. You’ll recall that Tim Johnson was forced out of a job with far less significance (manager of the Toronto Blue Jays) some years ago for making up a Vietnam record he didn’t have. Blumenthal’s credibility is now in tatters, and one gains a greater idea of why he had passed on runs for major statewide office so many times before.

Blumenthal’s implosion should focus GOP attentions again on this seat as a possible pickup, as two candidates square off for the GOP nomination, former Congressman and real Vietnam veteran Rob Simmons, and wrestling tycoon Linda MacMahon. That sound you heard is another seat going back on the board.

    this is a huge story

CT Sen Seat is back in play folks.

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0510/Blumenthals_Vietnam.html?showall

I still think Simmons is better for us now with his CIA and military service

    • ktsub

Is a good fit for the state.

Simmons, was one of the most liberal congressman, and is nothing but a retread. He has no money to spend, Linda is a different candidate, something the GOP needs.

Simmons will be outa money before the primary is over, and will just plain be outa gas. McMahon can take this. This is awsome.

      Enjoy!

What I found interesting were many of the comments to the New York Slime story. Many concluded this wouldn’t matter to most CT Dem voters.

with what happens in New England in November.

I know that some yahoo redneck that they call A. Gardner is bringing it to VT. New England, the second revoluttion starts now.

    Game on, baby.

    • The_Rebel

That sea of blue will turn red in many places.

      • constitutionalconservative

I would think the Dems have wrecked New England enough that folks would be looking for a plausible alternative.

And I hope we can keep Blumenthal on the ballot to help our chances :-)

    • swami7774

      …to God’s ears, Swamp.
The Dems are scared everywhere, including MA-10.
Last weekend they got two papers–the Globe and CC Times–to print recycled, 19-year old allegations about Jeff Perry.
As I told Jeff, you have arrived as a major candidate when you’ve been smeared by the Boston Globe.

  • RINKER

Dan, Dan, Dan. Don’t be naive. Deadlines are only for Republicans. The Democrats will find a way to replace him if they want to. (Torrecelli in New Jersey, etc)

  • itsjoanne

McMahon is spending millions of her own money trying to buy the seat.

    • Chieftain1776

Here’s his claim to fame (nearly 1.7 million views) and it’s perfect for this environment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I0QN-FYkpw

I don’t know about Linda McMahon but besides the wrestling sideshow I think she’ll also be another liberal Republican on economic issues and Simmons has a D- from the National Taxpayers Union.

Schiff is a fiscal conservative and social liberal and can really take it to Blumenthal in a principled way (see youtube link). Schiff has unmatched credibility on the economy.

      • tankertodd

Schiff predicted the housing crisis before it hit. He would be a great voice for fiscal sanity in the Senate.

        • http://www.theprecinctproject.wordpress.com ColdWarrior

He’s got an office in Scottsdale.

I really like what I’ve seen from him.

He just dropped 15 points. It’s down to 60-40, though his side’s still favored.

    Ruh roh.

  • IJB

    Hmmm… I wonder why?…

    • Dan McLaughlin

      He’s not a happy fella.

  • throwback59

    coming.

    • 6eorge Jetson

It’s only when the Dems talk about the past, present, or future do they lie.

  • http://www.redstate.com/biggator5/ BigGator5

Would like to know more about Linda MacMahon. Hell, maybe Rob Simmons too. I don’t know too much about either candidates.

  • katnandu

As a Connecticut resident I couldn’t be happier that this phony has been exposed!

Lying about serving in the US military dishonors all active service men and woman and all veterans, Richard Blumenthal has disgraced the military of our country and has NO PLACE in United States politics. Hit the road DICK ! Your not worthy to lick a Marines boots let along hold ANY office!

    • wolfster38

Video, Blumenthal:”when I served in Vietnam”

  • krsnadas

I can’t believe you didn’t mention Peter Schiff. He knows more about economics than any of these other candidates. He predicted this economic state back in 2006 when others (including Ben Stein) were ridiculing him for his position. Imagine having someone in the Senate who actually understands the free market!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I0QN-FYkpw

    • Dan McLaughlin

Simmons has an uphill battle here; Schiff’s is insurmountable. I see no sign that he has any money or any traction in the polls.

      • cooler

Schiff has raised more than 2 .5 million dollars so far so I’m not sure what you mean by not having “any money”. He’s aired 5 weeks of radio ads so far (still running) and 2 weeks of television ads: the last primary poll taken was before these were starting airing.

  • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

If not, DOOM to them as well.

    • LibertarianHawk

…they have in competitive races who is clearly up in the polls.

So what do you think? Of course they won’t call for him to drop out.

And, besides, we shouldn’t want him to drop out. They might come up with somebody without this kind of easy baggage.

      • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

Obama campaigning for Blumenthal this fall!

  • jmadisonfan

so tell me again Ms. Pelousy, which party owns the “culture of corruption” label, and which party has rented space on occasion? Something feels off here, why did the NYT decide to shine some light on this. Could there be more out there that the dims are trying to head off or bury, or did this guy just royally pi$$ someone off?

  • itsjoanne

    And sorry for wrong link.

    http://schiffforsenate.com

He’s the person conservatives should be rallying behind.

  • smitch61

The siren!! I get a kick out of it every time I see it…

    Good news too!

  • http://www.neoavatara.com/blog neoavatara

Just gave Republicans a Christmas gift in May.

The only thing is…will Democrats switch candidates? Possibly back to Dodd?

Watch out for the slip of the hand…

    http://neoavatara.com/blog/?p=10947

  • Bill S

the Dems in CT probably think it’s a good thing the guy dodged Vietnam.

    • IJB

Unfortunately for them, Democrats don’t constitute a majority of the CT electorate, as Lieberman’s last election demonstrated… ;)

    • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

I’m trying to find it, but someone said last year (and it may have even been a Republican) that “there are many ways to serve…”

And even if no one said this, this may be the spin. I did serve in Vietnam.. (i.e., “No one’s every really alone…”)

        http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/08/questions-about-romneys-sons-and-military-service/

        • Dan McLaughlin

To not have Romney as our front man. This is another.

That said, neither Mitt nor his family have ever claimed to be anything they are not, in terms of service records.

          • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

“…in terms of service records.” He does love America. I’ll definitely give him that.

            God bless our troops.

  • CowboyUp4419

Linda McMahon’s campaign is saying they tipped off the New York Times on this story. If that’s true then why not wait until August or September to tip them off? Wait until the primary’s over when the Democrats are spending resources on a flawed candidate THEN drop a bomb on them.

  • vinick

would love to see schiff get the nod and a chance for a serious run, but at this rate I’m just thrilled this one’s back in play so any of the three are fine by me.

  • http://pocketchangeproductions.net/ anotherindyfilmguy

Which in a sense may be a larger story in it’s own right, but then that’s just me being a tad cynical about things.

    • Dan McLaughlin

Linda MacMahon spoon-fed them this story. And the state Dems are trying to use that to blunt its impact, although they don’t and can’t dispute the factual reportage from a normally favorable source.

      • Richard Mullins

or it’s going to be toast for the Dems. The timing isn’t bad since it’s close to the cutoff and they can have a replacement. Sticking with Dick for the Dems is a bad idea. Come to think of it, Dems are getting the worst people to run this year.

  • jeffreywturner

It doesn’t help him certainly, but I’m not so sure it dooms him either.

Remember, we aren’t talking Texas or Nebraska here. This is still New England, and with a complicit media doing everything it can to get this story out of the way and forgotten by November, I am not sure this really dooms his chances.

In fact, I wouldn’t doubt that the media ran with this now in order to help the Dems out, by giving them the chance to replace him on the ballot before the deadline. Had this been a Republican, they would wait until he had the nomination locked up to run the story – ala John McCain and the hit piece they ran on him implying an affair with a lobbyist right after it became clear he would be the GOP nominee in 2008.

  • SirGladiator

This race was always going to tighten up, just because it was the same as the Massachusetts one, where the high name ID Democrat was WAY ahead of the low name ID Republican before he came on strong and won. It was just a matter of time. This news moves up that timeline rather significantly :) . Moving CT back into the GOP column, where it was before Dodd got out, makes it a LOT more likely that we will take back the Senate in November!

  • itrytobenice

unless they need to borrow a hero history. Then Cambodia is seared in their memory.

  • http://xmmlbchat.blogspot.com katesmith

It shows a borderline psychiatric disorder. He constructed a whole other life for himself, not just the military but said he was captain of the Harvard Swim team (Harvard said he wasn’t even on the team). I would not allow a person like this unattended on my property nor should anyone. As far as the NY Times, I don’t for one second believe good intentions were behind outing this man. They are completely hopeless.

    • The Old Dog

about a few “misplaced words”!!!! It’s not a lie, it’s just misplaced words! I wonder what would have happened if I had told my parents that I didn’t lie, that I just misplaced my words. First thought comes to my mind is that I would still be grounded almost 50 years later!

  • Hugh

If you lie about your service in Viet Nam which did not matter to most people, why should we believe anything that you say?
Message from mom: When all the lies fail, try the truth.

  • Raven

They have done everything wrong this entire past year. They don’t have a prayer in November.
Is the Healthcare takeover That valuable to them?

  • Martin Knight

… I think all the celebrating is a bit premature – this would have no effect on his Democratic base of support and only a small effect on the “moderate” Republicans that are already in Blumenthal’s corner. Discouraged Republicans in CT might become more motivated by this though – so that’s another major positive – they’ll be a bit less likely to just let this seat slip away now, but then again November is nearly six months away.

The key though in CT is Independents, but it remains to be seen how much effect it would have; while they’re generally not very happy with frauds, they tend to be fickle and have very short and limited attention spans. By the time November rolls around, they likely would have forgotten about this unless the GOP candidate makes sure to remind them. Which could be risky if he/she is seen (and the media will try to make it so) as harping incessantly on the issue i.e. Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell’s Masters Thesis, then the so-called Independents could just as easily switch back to Blumenthal.

Ultimately though, while it certainly would have been better for him if this had not come out, the timing of this, so far from Election Day, somehow favors Blumenthal. By then it would almost certainly be termed “old news” and anybody bringing it up could very easily be accused by the Democrats and their friends in the media of “dwelling on the past” – that’s why the NYT is getting it out now as early as possible in the cycle. I have no doubt that if McMahon had waited until August or September, the New York Times would not have run this story.

  • Ausonius

How is that this story is just now being unveiled?

How many years have gone by, how many elections has this character won, and NOW we find out he is a professional Munchhausen?

Does nobody in Connecticut check anything publicly claimed by a politician? Are Republicans and the media that lazy?

      More:

“I wore the uniform in Vietnam and many came back to all kinds of disrespect.”

      – Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal (D), quoted by the Stamford Advocate in 2008.

Thanks to SoFiMi for the link to the .pdf with the filing deadlines. I’m wondering if Linda McMahanon can keep on the momentum until Aug. 10,2010? Keep riding the high and have Blumenthal as the Dem candidate, it’s all over for the Dems. There is still a little chance the CT Dems can pull a Torch.
