Pretending The Union Money Doesn’t Exist


Dishonest Politicians Aided By Dishonest Reporting

Desperate Democrats have been hyperventilating for the past month over money being spent by corporate and other groups, notably the Chamber of Commerce and Americans for Prosperity, to run campaign commercials. To conservatives, running commercials to attempt to persuade voters in advance of an election is known as “free speech,” and turnabout is fair play after corporate money went heavily for Obama in 2008, but let’s play along here; how much of an advantage does the GOP have here?

Well, according to Greg Sargent, the Washington Post’s in-house left-wing activist, it’s huge: “The total on the right: $74,733,356. On the left: $9,868,057. And the groups on the left, unlike on the right, consist of well-known names like the Sierra Club and Defenders of Wildlife.” This is the standard spin from the Democrats, and Sargent is nothing if not a reliable source for whatever the standard spin from the Democrats happens to be on a particular day. But conspicuously absent from Sargent’s list are the largest unions, led by unions of public employees whose taxpayer-funded salaries are funneled into compulsory union dues and then passed on to the people who set those taxpayer-funded salaries. The lead article on the front page of this morning’s Wall Street Journal tells the story – check out the Journal’s telling graphic:

That’s right, three of the five largest campaign spenders this year are not business or pro-business groups but unions afffiliated with the Democrats and dominated by public employees.

The largest spender is AFSCME (the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees), which is spending $87.5 million, more than any business group and nearly ten times what Sargent claims is the entire spending budget for outside groups on the left (maybe he doesn’t get the Journal, but somebody at the Post should have been embarrassed by how misleading his figures are in light of the Journal’s report, which has been online since last night). The Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which consists heavily of public employees, and the National Education Association (NEA), which consists of public school teachers, round out the top five at $44 and $40 million, respectively. It’s not hard to see why they’re running scared: as the WSJ notes, all three benefitted significantly from the funnelling of stimulus money to state and local governments (private sector unions have their own reasons to fear a change in control of Congress in 2010). This is government by the government, of the government, for the government. And it shows the absurd hypocrisy of Democrats complaining about pro-business groups trying to rally a beleaguered private sector to defend itself against the government when the government’s own employees’ unions are outspending the biggest business groups.

The Democrats aren’t against big outside spending in elections. They just don’t like it when the other side gets to fight back.

Republicans Need To Reform This

Think for a moment if say large corporations took money out of employee paychecks so they could fund conservative causes. There would be understandable outrage. How is this different from what Unions do?

Republicans should push some sort of campaign finance reform to clamp down on this, and take away the Left’s piggybank.

The “reform” which is needed is for the government to get out of setting the rules for election speech. When politicians set rules for what can be done, spent, and said during election campaigns – you know they are looking out for their own re-election.

I do think that as unions are forcing employees in as a condition of working at a “union shop” then there should be restrictions on what that money be spent on that specifically exclude political advocacy.

A better way to reform this would be to take the anti-trust exemptions that unions enjoy away and start prosecuting them under the RICO act.

would work better. A national right-to-work law would allow individuals the freedom to take their money elsewhere. And make the union earn their dues, rather than rip it from their paychecks.

All the union has to do is to direct all of their other money to the political aspects, leaving the union dues to pay for overhead, etc. It’s just like what Planned Parenthood does – they make sure that none of the money that comes from some of the public sources is used for abortions, and instead is used for non-abortion activities.

It’s all accounting tricks.

It would be different in that if someone quit his job at a corporation for that reason, he’d still be able to get a job in the same field at another company. If you quit the union in a union town, you’ll have to find a new career altogether.

I think any Union that contributes to Elections etc, needs to have all pension and benefits funds audited to ensure the members will get their money and benefits. After all, it’s money taken from their paychecks, correct?

And if it turns out, the money is missing… all the guys in charge get to have their assets stripped to reimburse the misappropriated funds.

If they were honest, they wouldn’t fear an audit, and this should be our mantra when we push for them all to be audited. But they aren’t, and we know they aren’t, and they know that as well. They’ll fight tooth and nail to avoid it, they’ll try to get Democrats in the Senate to filibuster it and Obama to veto it.

Let them.

We can hang their obstructionism around their necks like a millstone. Let them fight tooth and nail against transparency. Then let them try to explain that in 2012, when the next election comes along.

It's Odd

Once upon a time, Government employees accepted low wages relative to the private sector in exchange for job security and great benefits.

Today, Government employees make more than most in the Public:

Overall, federal workers earned an average salary of $67,691 in 2008 for occupations that exist both in government and the private sector, … The average pay for the same mix of jobs in the private sector was $60,046 in 2008,

These salary figures do not include the value of health, pension and other benefits, which averaged $40,785 per federal employee in 2008 vs. $9,882 per private worker …

I was once a “beltway bandit:” the Government hired us to do what their own employees could not. I quickly estimated that HALF of government employees could be fired with no impact on the services agencies provided, but I was wrong! After a year of study, I determined that TWO THIRDS of Government employees were incompetent, and generally useless.

About a third of Government employees are really very good … they are devoted, hardworking, and carry the burden of their less competent associates.

But the Government Unions make it almost impossible to can workers whose wages are paid for by The Public. No wonder that they spend $millions to preserve their sinecure!

The UK and most of Europe have recently recognized this … they are firing Government workers by the thousands. Only America and Obama and Geitner stand in opposition to the rest of the world!

It is odd that America should remain the last bastion against reducing Government … we couldn’t even join the EU these days, because our debt and deficits exceed their requirements.

What would happen if the Govt shutdown?

Think about it.
1) Would you perish immediately?
2) No one would take your money for nothing?
3) there would be no contrived news stories?
4) Ms Obama would have to pay for her own staff of 30?
5) No one would miss it? (except Police/professional Fire)

I think this is why they have never done although it has been promised during many budget debatess. If they did, it would make no difference to the lives of working folks.

Thank you for posting the different salary figures in the manner which compares similar jobs. The salary differential may be explained by the longevity of government employees vs private sector people changing employers with some frequency.

And thanks for stating that some third of government employees are competent and dedicated. I counted myself as one of those. I’ve been retired for some years, but in my last full year of work I returned $125 million USD in fines, restitution and recoveries to the taxpayers. I would have been fairly happy, at that time, to have a salary equal to 0.1% of that amount for the year.

I don’t know what the benefit packages are for state and local employees, but Federal employees contribute significantly to much of their benefits package (vacation/leave being an exception, but “informal” days off are not unknown in private employment and require use of leave in Federal employment). Quasi-governmental entities such as the USPS bargain for at least some of their benefits and contributions, which may have a distinct impact on the calculation (USPS being the large employer it is).

As for the ability to fire an employee, the unions have little to do with the rules for firing in the Civil Service. They will fight a firing tooth and nail for those covered by a union, and can bargain “around the edges”, but the ability and procedure for firing are set in statute. Most managers are, frankly, too afraid (or lazy) to do the work necessary to compile the evidence needed to fire. The argument (from outside the government) that employees can’t be fired” seems to have had an effect on government management. The rules and requirements date back to the elimination of the “spoils” system and the institution of a “Civil Service”. They were designed to protect employees from being fired when an election brought in a new Administration by requiring proof of malfeasance, misfeasance or generally bad conduct or work habits.

An audit was conducted, and it concluded that the state commission did not violate state law and that it had clear legal authority to conduct its public advertising campaigns related to preschool. In the end, Prop 82 failed to win approval, garnering only 39.1% support…

Can someone give me a substantive, compelling reason why public sector employees NEED a union? (Full disclosure, I’ve been a Teamster, I had an uncle who was a Teamster local official, and I’ve worked, underground, in coal mines. Therefore I understand the reason behind unions, and agree somewhat with their purpose.)

That said, unions are all based on a flawed premise; All workers are equal. Anyone who has ever worked anywhere, union shop or not, knows that is just not true.

I worked my way through college on the GI Bill ($125 per month for married folks) and the night shift for the US Post Office Department. We had an Assistant Post Master who used to lecture us that we should get down on our knees daily and thank God that we had a job (the Great Depression had a great effect on him), and how when he was a Clerk the POD didn’t supply paper towels in the rest room and he was required to furnish his own towel, and there were locker inspections to make sure the employees took their towels home to be washed. I had a Superintendent of Mail who informed me that he “…didn’t give a f*** what the union contract said, you will do exactly what I tell you to do and like it!” Further, he also told me he didn’t give a da** what the law and regulations said about who could handle first class mail (he had female part time school kids handling and canceling first class mail when they were supposed to only be used to load and unload trucks [admittedly the boys were doing just that] and anyone not a regular employee was not supposed to handle individual pieces of first class mail),

Obviously that was many, many years ago. I don’t know what the situation is today, though those managers who survived the Depression are long ago retired, if even still with us. The managers of the POD routinely lost grievance appeals. So much so that I later read that the then new USPS informed the Postmasters that if they lost 3 Grievance Appeals, they should be looking for a new job. The “message” was not that you had better cave in, but that you had better be right if you let it go beyond the initial grievance process. In my day, in my PO, no filed grievance was settled at the local level, despite union local attempts to do just that. The Postmaster actually suggested to the local President that documentation (from another person not involved in that conversation) included in an appeal be altered, without the originator’s knowledge or agreement, before being sent to the Regional Office. At that time, in that PO, management seemed somewhat amazed that employees would “challenge” their decisions in any way. I can’t say that this was a pervasive attitude across the USPOD, though I suspect that it was outside of states with a strong union presence in the private sector.

Government … Government Employees … Unions …

As Government expands and slowly becomes the #1 Employer, do you really think that there is any way that they will “reasonable employers”? Can you imagine the cronyism that would run rampant with every new election (look at Obama’s raft of new “Czars”) ? Can you imagine how many politicians would basically tell the employees that voting for someone else will cost them their job?

Unfortunately, unions do have their place. In some industries and workplaces they are almost a necessary evil.

I don’t like unions or what they do in general. Sometimes though, you can see where workers need one. The problem is that they do an excellent job of solidifying the workers into a coherent force to bring the owners or … business operators to a bargaining table and forcing them to treat the workers with some equity. BUT then they become the “help” that never stops giving but instead just continues to grow and from a 2 pound monkey you get a 500 pound gorilla.

Workers would be better of if they could gather themselves together and present their grievances as a group … but they can’t (or can’t find the will) to do it themselves. Unions provide that … “will”.

As for all those out there who come up with statements like … just quit … no-one makes you … you need to get a bit “real” many places where corporations have power, the power is almost absolute. They “own” the town, the county, the authorities. The only thing to do is move away … many people do not know how to do that, are not capable, have lived their entire lives in one area …

Today, in these economic times, Employment Agencies are becoming the new abusive corporate entity. You can’t get a job because employers only hire through the Agency. The Agency buffers the corporation from all sorts of liabilities and sundry costs and make workers easily replaceable. The Agencies, knowing that they have the job market almost totally locked up have created a “regulated” wage structure that runs from $9 per hour to a high of about $14.50. Many of the jobs aren’t worth more. Many are though.

These Agencies aren’t trying to get you employed, they ARE the employer.

Unions are all for “equal pay for equal work”, but that is misleading because it actually means that you as an individual are not worth less OR more than anyone else who is a member of the “collective”.

The “less’ doesn’t seem to be a problem (the lazy and/or lacking talent don’t mind), but the “more” eventually HAVE a problem, because no man in his or her right mind wants to carry those who always lag behind.

Equality’s downfall is demoralization by those who are talented and willing to work hard to get ahead, so to speak, of the “herd”. In a “collective” setting the “eager” intimidates the collective’s leaders, who are forever callously greedy for their undeserved positions of power.

Anyone who is not aware of the dangers of ANY “collective” thinking and behavior, obviously does not have a clue of the follies” sins” of mankind: egotism, greed and jealousy; on one side and laziness and avoidance of responsibility on the other”. No man can correct these “sins” no matter what deterring actions are used against him or her.

The only sure-fire success for the individual is “laissez-faire” capitalism, where the individual flourishes or fails according to the individual’s willingness to take responsibility for his or her “sins” and no “collective” power comes into play.

Finally, some union members are taking notice of most unions who cannot fund their pension plans, giving millions of their members money to politicians seeking favors. Just like the obscene-congress-critters, they say it’s not your money, it’s ours.
“We the people” will hold them accountable, too.
