Michigan’s 1st District: An Awakening

We’ve been traveling this week. We’ve logged hundreds of miles and gone from town to town, meeting people of Main Street, America.  I’ve talked to them in coffee shops, private homes, businesses, Republican dinners and Tea Party events.  Everywhere I’ve gone, the people are speaking out and I am listening.

I’ve been extremely impressed with how well-informed the people are.  The topics we’ve discussed, the questions that have been asked, all show that the citizenry of our 1st District is paying attention, educating themselves and tackling the concerns we have about our country’s direction, head on.  This renewed interest by regular Americans has been kindled by the negative impact that the current Democrat administration has had on their lives.  They see that they have been caught in the cross-hairs, and they are learning how government is meant to work, not just the politics involved. They’ve asked me about the 1st, 2nd, 10th and 17th Amendments.  My fellow citizens are reading for themselves, the Constitution, learning the how and why, what Washington should not be doing vs. what they have done.  Our current legislators and this administration do not want the populace to know or speak out, but we are not going to stop.  That is the message I am receiving from the people.

We are all concerned about this country’s current course. Policies have been set in place that will have disastrous economic consequences unless we stop and take corrective action.  This administration has brought even higher unemployment rates, which we are now all too familiar with here in the 1st District.  President Obama and his administration’s efforts to intrude upon and control the individual citizen’s life cannot continue.  The only way we can stop this is by using the energy and common sense of the people themselves to set us on the right course.

While people have legitimate concerns, they also have demonstrated an incredible spirit. The American spirit, the one of “can do” and “will do,” forms the core of our traditional American character.  It is this awakening and renewal that I saw as I traveled, and the people of the 1st District are echoing their fellow Americans across the land.  Something else I see; people aren’t leaving this job to others; they are rolling up their sleeves and willing to do it themselves.  I am with them on this.  I’m a husband, father and physician, but I am also an American seeking to restore this land to her Constitutional foundations.

RedState has an outstanding writer, Vassar Bushmills.  Not too long ago he wrote a blog post that illuminated the awakening of the American spirit.  He called it America “getting all philosophical again.” He noted the common man and woman, ordinary folks like you and me, looking up the true meaning of the word Liberty; and reminding themselves of the real purpose of citizenship.

Meanwhile, the administration in Washington doesn’t seem to get it.  They have a stranglehold on our district, our state, and our country, and it must be loosened.  We have to start cutting the strings, breaking out of the web that has trapped us for so long in dependency, dependency on government, dependency on Washington.

The people, you and I, are the backbone of this nation.  We will find the strength, the spirit; we’ll reach into ourselves to stop Washington, stop the arrogance and indifference.  You will find that spirit in Michigan’s 1st District.  I am one of them – just an ordinary citizen who decided to step up and confront these issues head on.  It gives me joy and I consider it an honor to do this work, with the support of my fellow citizens, to stop Washington, help others share in the opportunity for prosperity this nation has always represented, and I am willing to risk and sacrifice to do it.

The American awakening is here, and it is the people who are saying, “Enough is Enough.”

P.S.  Obviously Michigan’s 1st District is very important to me, but we can’t forget PA-12 next week.

I have been watching your campaign closely, and have in fact spoken with your wife a few months back. I loved your ad welcoming the carpetbagger that is running against you, and offering to show him around the district. That was a classic.

This is your race Dr. Benishek, and I look forward to watching you take the reins back from the Dems, and Pelousy, and steer the team back onto the path of freedom and prosperity for all Americans.

    Break a leg Dr. Dan.

We’re all fed up with career politicians looking to make themselves appear as something they’re not. Namely: concerned. Let’s get rid of them. We need citizens to stand for us.

to a LOT of US on Redstate that shows a lot of respect! This seat is going to be a seat for FREEDOM which to me means it is going to go to Dan Benishek :)

I support you, I am not in your district and cannot vote, but you have my full support. I can make phone calls anytime, I will even donate directly to your campaign..

I am however in the 15th district, able to vote there, and have my full support behind Dr. Rob Steele running for Dingell’s seat.. He CAN win, and he needs redstates support. We need attention to both of you fine men.

I’m in the 8th District, but have family in the 1st.

You’ve got a lot of fans here, live in God’s country, so why you’d want to give up a few years of life by going to Washington City is beyond me?… unless you are a true patriot…a self-sacrificing patriot at that.

That’s what it take, so God bless. And thanks for the plug. Haven’t been up to the island in years, but used to fish th Au Sable regularly.

    Cheers

Dr. Dan is surely in this race for the right reasons, mainly his love for this country and who we will be once again with people like him.

Yeah, why ever would anyone want to give up the outdoor rural life, with hunting and fishing to go to the swamp in DC? That is truly sacrifice, and the kind of people who our founders envisioned.

The plug was well deserved Vassar.

Thanks for the good news, I’m reasonably certain, though I have no polls or numbers to support my contention, that this is going on across the country. November will bring the proof.

I am always amazed at the idiots who run this Country because they truly believe that Republicans were voted out because Americans wanted to be Socialists even though Americans SAID LOUD & CLEAR “its the spending stupid” and Democrats ran on :laughing out loud: curtailing spending and then proceeded to out spend Republicans 100 to 1 and they will keep on spending until they are voted OUT!

I am sure they never thought, (neither did Bart Stupak) they would land up on the national stage. Yet, this is a good thing, for them and their fellow Americans across the country. After years of entrenched Democrat failed policies, the people are able to glimpse what a return to freedom really means. The people not only need to take back their government, they want to.

Good luck, Dr. Benishek. Your message should resonate everywhere.

    …and too polite!

And we will repeat what has already been noted: that America was willing to give a chance to the “nice young Afro-American.” And they ignored his latent hatred for America which was not so latently expressed in his books.

I have been hearing conversations here in Ohio in post offices and in check-out lines, where disgust with MAObama and the Dems and the FedGov in general is the topic: strangers talking to strangers.

My brother-in-law lives in a small town and has a good number of lower-class friends. Overhearing their conversations recently showed me that even non-political types – they just want government to let them alone to race their cars or build a boat in the backyard or to build their own garage without licenses or permits or inspectors – are now also disgusted with what they are seeing and hearing.

Most of them did not vote the last time: they were claiming they would not make that mistake again.

Hardly scientific, but it might be part of this dissatisfied trend, which the Dems are deliberately ignoring, because it does not fit their personal mythology, i.e. America Voted for Socialism by electing BIG BRObama.

Appreciate your support. Let’s all get out there and VOTE in November and in the primaries.

Mr. Benishek has summarized beautifully the reason why and the way that Americans have reawakened to the meaning of freedom and liberty. Real freedoms have been suppressed by the proponents of big government in the name of “freedoms” defined perversely. This is now obvious to anyone who has his eyes open, and isn’t living in the land of progressive good intentions with no accountability for results.

I liken the “intentions vs. results” problem to chess. Chess players make it a practice to look several steps into the future. Non-chess players often don’t. If you are playing chess and not looking as far into the future as your opponent you will lose. If you make plans based on intentions without ever reorienting based on results, you will lose. Entropy is not a friend of organized systems. It is an opponent. It will win if you play stupidly. And that’s where we are.

Progressive insistence on a big, all-controlling government has cost the people of the US enormous amounts of wealth and great freedoms. Throwing the progressives (socialists) out of power completely is a tough job, but it is required in order to be free and once again the masters of our own destiny.

those that previously never got involved in politics, or voted, and always believed that their vote didn’t count are now coming out of the woodwork. My husband observed the same at the company where he works, about 50-60 employees. Lunch and breaks are all filled with talk about just how much our current pres. and the Progressives are destroying the country, and they are highly engaged and active in politics now. Before Obama, the talk was all NASCAR, Guns and hunting, fishing and Football. It is so very encouraging.

Remember Nixon’s reference to the silent majority, who supported saving Vietnam and who were not bombing their brains with LSD or other drugs!

Perhaps they are tired of hearing the Leftists for 40 + years, and no longer want to wander the deserts of Socialist pessimism.

I cannot imagine the NASCAR or outdoor sportsmen vote going to a pathetic metrosexual like BIG BRObama!

But they need to vote and push their complaints against the polticians to begin with, otherwise their lamentations will remain just “voices crying in the desert.”
