Celebrate Earth Hour by turning on the lights

Promoted from the diaries.  Turn those lights on tonight, kids!

Never heard of earth hour? Me neither until I read this article in the LA Times online edition:

Get ready to fade to black. Millions of people around the world are expected to turn off their lights at 8:30 p.m. local time Saturday — no matter what time zone they’re  in — to observe Earth Hour. Never heard of it? It was started in 2007 by the WWF conservation organization to make a statement about energy overuse and how it affects the planet.

Times Square, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Las Vegas Strip, Niagara Falls, the Opera House in Sydney, and many more landmarks around the world plan to douse the lights, according to Earth Hour’s website.

In Southern California, the Queen Mary will blast its horn at 8:30 p.m. to indicate the beginning of Earth Hour. Then the Long Beach landmark will turn off lights on its smokestacks, the string of lights atop the ship and other areas as well as encourage guests staying in staterooms to do likewise.

I’ve decided to celebrate earth hour this year in a slightly different way. I’m going to turn all my lights on. I’m celebrating man’s emergence from darkness. Man’s use of technology that has saved millions from poverty and starvation. Won’t you join me this year in the ritual lighting of an endangered species; the incandescent light bulb?

All kidding aside, no one will be hurt by this silly event designed to make liberals feel good about themselves but the same can’t be said about other liberal policies. From the millions of African children who have died of malaria because DDT was effectively banned to starvation increasing in the third world because we have decided to turn food into fuel. Even something as simple as not allowing people to clear brush around their property which creates a fire hazard. (See this tragic story in the Australian Press) The progressives never give a second thought to the unintended results of their policies.

At least for one hour on Saturday they won’t have to look at themselves in the mirror.

If they really wanted to have an impact they’d turn off their refrigerators and furnaces, their TVs and computers, their hospitals and their burgular alarms. Just a bunch of crap to show that they really care. Well I care. I care that my food is safe and my house is warm, I’ll watch TV and maybe multi-task on the computer at the same time. Electricity has been the boon for mankind. And I will revel in all its wattage come 8:30 tonight.

They want us to turn our light off to show the world whatever they are wanting to show it?

Even if, and that is a BIG if, global warming and such was due to man and could be fixed, what is God’s green earth does an hour of no lights do to fix the problem?

And since I have not yet sunk to the level of stupidity to become a GW sheep, do not ignore the massive contradictions in their theory, and do not ignore the very faulty science used to claim GW, I am joining in on the “Turn every light on” cause tonight.

I still find it amazing at the petty thing that side does in order to be able to claim superiority in all things progressive.

I went an bought an aerosol can just so I could stand in the road spraying it into the air in hopes some of the ‘enlightened” in my neck of the woods sees me so that they believe my actions just countered their pious attempts to save the planet.

. . .in that their idea of a demonstration of responsible behavior is to make American cities look like aerial photographs of North Korea at night.

Why would I want to increase my electric bill in a state with outrageous electric rates already? I’m not turning any lights off tonight, but I’m certainly not turning them all on either.

LOL, thanks for the heads up on the Queen Mary’s smokestakes going dark. I’m sure the local news will be televising that plus the Las Vegas strip going dark.

I don’t think that’ll stop local folks from heading off to the local Indian casino and playing slots, or watching their Netflix DVD tonight.

I believe Moe told you not to post until after he was done checking you out.

Based on your two-year old commenting history, I’d say it’s probably a good idea to re-hibernate.

been doing it from the start. Another ultimately meaningless “event” sponsored by the left.

And glow, you little glow worms.

    The lumen credit’s looming,

As the Light Brigade takes form.

    When denizens of Darfur,

    Sell shadow to Atlanta,

    Light sentences will follow,

And you can’t say you weren’t warned.

In Alabama tonight, the Earth celebrated by sending a severe thunderstorm and tornado through Walker County and Jefferson County, knocking out power in some areas. Although Earth Hour is probably not very popular in this state, I suppose that most people in this area had and have other things on their minds tonight than saving power.

Maybe the Earth has a sense of humor?

I’m going to go out and buy more incandescent light bulbs so I’ll be ready for next year. I hope they are still on sale at Walmart. I think I’ll fill up my shopping cart again.

and turn off everything that can be turned off most of the time, so that I can live in the house I inherited, pay the ever increasing taxes, and afford to give presents to my grandchildren on holidays.

Earth Day was started by a psychopath, Ira Einhorn, who killed his girlfriend and stuffed her in a trunk that he locked in a closet in his apartment, and then lived with the smell and the corpse for years. We should imitate a guy with the personality of a Hitler or Stalin?

My college students who are all “green” will turn off the tv in their room so they can watch the widescreen in the kitchen for their big earth hour, but they will drive between classes when the entire campus covers about three square blocks and can be walked in any direction in 10-15 mins.

It’s like Al Gore, who can spend as much on one house that I spend in a year, because he “buys” carbon credit, so he doesn’t save anything energy at all.

And for the rest, if you ever asked them how electricity is generated and how the US grid works, they would know no more about either than they know about how a car engine works or why a heavier than air plane can fly or how to track a deer in the woods or even locate a squirrel’s nest. Most greens are so disconnected from “nature,” that they think a picnic in a public park represents knowledge of Mother Gia.
