McConnell Should Appoint DeMint to Finance Committee

Last week, Nevada Senator John Ensign resigned his seat, creating a vacancy on several Senate committees.  While Congressman Dean Heller will fill Ensign’s Senate seat, a member with more seniority will be appointed to his coveted slot on the Senate Finance Committee.  The Finance Committee is considered a prized “Super-A committee” due to the extent and relevance of its jurisdiction, which includes trade, taxes, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.  Unlike its House counterpart, the Senate Finance Committee also encompasses the jurisdiction of the House Ways and Means Committee.  This panel is clearly the most important Senate committee in the realm of domestic policy.  Who better to sit on that committee than Jim DeMint?

Senator DeMint has been implored to run for all sorts of leadership roles, ranging from President to Senate Leader, but has firmly declined.  Fortunately, this is a position that he is openly embracing.  A DeMint spokesman told Roll Call that he is throwing his hat into the ring for the seat on the Finance Committee:

“Senator DeMint is very interested in serving on the Finance Committee and has requested it every time since he was elected,” said his spokesman, Wesley Denton. “This is where entitlement reform will be written to balance the budget, it’s where Obamacare will be repealed, and it’s where our tax laws will be reformed to ensure that America remains the best place in the world to do business. … He understands the seat will be filled by the Republican Leader and Senator DeMint will respect his decision.”

DeMint has attempted to obtain a seat on the committee in the past, only to be passed over for those with more seniority.  Now, DeMint is the one with the seniority.  The other announced candidate for the position is Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns, a more junior member.  In addition, Mike Johanns has not been at the forefront of the battle for liberty and constitutional government in the same way as DeMint.  Just last year, Johanns voted for START and the FDA food takeover, while opposing efforts to reign in the Federal Reserve, Freddie and Fannie, and the Justice Department’s lawsuit against Arizona.

McConnell has already denied DeMint a seat on the Finance Committee due to a lack of seniority in 2008.  Now is the time for McConnell to show that he is consistent and serious about cutting spending by appointing Jim DeMint to the Senate Finance Committee.  Surely, seniority applies to conservatives too, doesn’t it?

Please call Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and request that he put Senator DeMint on the Finance Committee.  (202) 224-2541

I misread the title at first

And thought this was a done deal. Good thing I caught my mistake before I started apologizing for every bad thing I’ve ever said about Mitch McConnell.

Seriously, Mitch, if you want to get back on the TEA Party’s good side and telegraph that you are serious about wanting to solve the nation’s fiscal problems, this would be a HUGE first step.

I hope we have some KY red staters

so McConnell will pay serious attention to the calls.

Done - just called

…also faxed this respectful note:

Senator McConnell:

We find it imperative to the future liberties of our nation to appoint Senator Jim DeMint to the Finance Committee.

Every single decision and step (policy, appointments, etc) must be made to pull this great nation back from the financial and tyrannical abyss it faces. Appointing Senator DeMint is just one of those.

We realize you are aware of Senator DeMint’s standing with Tea Parties across the country.

We need your leadership in doing the right thing.

Can you really see DeMint

ohiohistorian (Diary) Thursday, April 28th at 10:31AM EDT (link)

being appointed to the committee with Orrin Hatch as Minority Leader? If you look at the membership, it is full of RINOs such as Olymphia Snowe and liberals such as Ben Cardin. I think Thune was the only one on there that I would say is conservative. I don’t think Mitch has big enough cojones to disrupt that committee with DeMint. C’mon Mitch, prove me WRONG!

The real question is "Would McConnell dare to NOT give DeMint the seat?

gawken (Diary) Thursday, April 28th at 11:34AM EDT (link)

There is NO way that McConnell won’t give DeMint the seat on the SFC. He could not possibly be that stupid…

McConnell will give the seat to Murkowski...

acat (Diary) Thursday, April 28th at 11:42AM EDT (link)

or someone with similar non-conservative cred.

McConnell isn’t worried about keeping his Senate seat, but he is worried that if he gives any of the conservatives anything resembling power, his chance at being Majority Leader in 2013 will be done…

McConnell is too busy being one of the good ‘ole boys to actually give a roaring rat’s a$$ about this country and principles… sigh… we need to clean house of all of these old dinosaurs.

Great description

one can only hope McConnell reads this!

Yes, he is that stupid.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Thursday, April 28th at 12:49PM EDT (link)

He walked into The Big 0′s office for the big budget conference and came out proudly proclaiming he’d won $30-some billion in cuts. When the real accountants were done with it, it was more like $300 million in cuts. Yes there were others in the room who should have stood up better, but so could have McConnell.

Actually it was $38 billion.

Diogenes314 (Diary) Thursday, April 28th at 2:04PM EDT (link)

Which will add up to well over a hundred billion in the long run. And anyone who confuses the CBO with ‘real accountants’ needs to check their meds.

But feel free to spin away.

The only thing Keynes got right is that

The_Gadfly (Diary) Friday, April 29th at 1:06PM EDT (link)

in the long run we are all dead. So that doesn’t work for me either. And no, I’ve never confused the CBO with real accountants, although from your post, you seem to have done so.

Why not let Heller take over?

freemanja1991 (Diary) Thursday, April 28th at 12:53PM EDT (link)

Heller is already on Ways and Means in the house. And was voting against pork before it was fashionable. Jill Derby was hammering him in th ’08 campaign for voting against “such great bills” because they were full of pork.

DeMint has my vote

davidleigh Thursday, April 28th at 2:06PM EDT (link)

Se. DeMint makes our state proud and I just called McConnell’s office to cast my vote. I’m hopeful he gets the nod because that Committee needs an adult on it big time.

I just called as well…. let’s see whether these calls make any difference. Have called a lot of state and federal congress people over the past year and sometimes appears it’s all for naught.

Swimming up stream

freshhorsesnow (Diary) Friday, April 29th at 1:26PM EDT (link)

Called and spoke to McConnell’s staff regarding DeMint on the finance committee. It is easy to get discouraged with the politics of it all and to feel like we are swimming up stream.

In the end we need THE RESOLVE to FORCE this change, and others like it, because the American people want it

NOT WHAT WASHINGTON DC WANTS. . WHAT WE THE PEOPLE WANT!

They all WORK FOR US.

At last count, we still outnumber professional politicians and their entourage.

I called Mitch

abond Friday, April 29th at 3:35PM EDT (link)

I called Mitch and left a message to support DeMint. Hopefully he’ll listen, we’ll see.

In the meantime, with regard to DeMint, I noted Red State sent me some Presidential poll and it’s a joke. It supposedly uses all these one-to-one matchups to avoid gaming the system. But in reality, I had to cast dozens of votes among dozens of matchups, and I didn’t want to vote for ANY of them. I wanted to vote for DeMint and was never even offered that option. So it’s full of totally bogus preferences, and nothing I’m actually interested in. I’d have thought Red State would have been more careful before sponsoring such a farce.
