More Residual Effects of Obama’s Anti-Oil Policies

The depletion of our oil production is corroding the Alaska pipeline and widening the trade deficit.

Obama’s oil free utopia is precipitating yet more mayhem on our economy.  Today, two major news stories concerning our lack of oil production highlight just how profoundly oil affects our economy.

The first story concerns the Trans Alaska Pipeline.  The pipeline employs 2,000 workers and delivers 11% of our domestically produced oil to the other states.  During its early years, when we weren’t impounding the oil in Alaska, the pipeline transported 2 million barrels of oil per day.  Now, less than a third of that volume flows through the pipeline, with the trajectory spiraling sharply downward.  The Wall Street Journal reported today that there is growing concern about the adverse effects of decreasing oil flow on the pipeline itself:

Now, dwindling oil production along Alaska’s northern edge means the pipeline carries less than one-third the volume it once did—and the crude takes five times as long to get to its destination.

That leisurely flow means the oil is above ground longer and more exposed to Alaska’s frigid weather; the crude sometimes arrives chilled to 40 degrees. As the flow and temperature continue to drop, experts say the risks of a clog or corrosion increase, as do the odds of ruptures and spills.

Unless a technological solution can be found, the arcane physics of crude flow may force the multibillion dollar, 48-inch-wide steel pipeline to shut down—and determine the fate of the largest oil field ever found in the U.S.

There’s one other, seemingly simple fix: Add more oil.

Unfortunately, Obama only has plans to decrease the oil flow even further.  In addition to locking up new areas in Alaska for domestic drilling (like ANWR), the EPA, in conjunction with frivolous lawsuits from environmental legal defense groups, has blocked Shell Oil from exploring an estimated 27 billion barrels of oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas.

Republicans must continue to focus their attention on more oil production so we can replenish the supply of the pipeline.  They should fast track Bob Latta’s H.R. 1777, which would open up ANWR, streamline the permitting and application process, cancel onerous regulations, and reform the lawsuit process.  It would be good for Alaska and the rest of us; bad for Obama and the environmentalists.

The other big story of the day is the widening trade deficit.  Government officials have been trying to mimic the Chinese by boosting exports through the devaluation of the currency.  To that end, exports grew 4.6% to a record $172.67 billion in March; the biggest monthly gain since 1994.  Yet, astoundingly, the trade deficit still jumped 6% to $48.18 billion.  Why?  The Wall Street Journal reports that we paid roughly $8.5 billion more for “all types of energy-related imports” in March then in February.  The annual pace of our trade deficit is currently running at $562.8 billion, $67.5 billion more than last year.  Thus, even a concerted effort to attenuate the dollar cannot stem the tide of the trade deficit which is exacerbated by sluggish domestic oil production.

Today’s news simply reinforces the self evident fact that oil is the bloodline of our economy.  The cheap and free flow of oil affects every corner of our economy and virtually every facet of our lives.  Sadly, Obama understands this as well.  As he seeks to replace our free market society with a centrally planned one, he is going for the jugular.

Ever since the killing of Bin Laden, Obama has been promoting himself as if he was one of those Navy SEALs.  There is some truth to that notion after all.  Obama is the Navy SEAL of economic warfare.

That’s why they dig in to kill any North Slope development, not just ANWR.

Who operates on the North Slope? BP, Shell, ConocoPhillips, big companies who can take their ball and go home — or, more likely, go elsewhere.

We still need their oil, and it all burns pretty much the same whether it’s sourced in Alaska, Oklahoma, Nigeria or Kazakhstan.

I guess that is why the left is even more vociferous about opposing Alaskan drilling than other places. They kill two birds with one stone.

        Atlas Shrugged lately??

“Republicans must continue to focus their attention on more oil production so we can replenish the supply of the pipeline.”

poorly stated purpose – we focus on more oil production so that we can replenish the energy needs of the country! The pipeline is just a useful tool, and when not needed, it should be dismantled. Of course, it is needed, so my quibble is just with your wording. Otherwise good post.

we have noted that incessantly. Here I am highlighting a special focus on drilling in Alaska because of the pipeline.

the lefts real intent is to collapse the economy to change our government to some form of socialism. thats the only explanation that makes sense for all bad decisions. no one cane be that wrong all the time
the shutoff of oil is part of the collapse of america through 1.6 trillion dollar deficits

the fed makes money on royalties from this oil so why else would they be hurting their revenue stream

if “progressive” economics collapse the economy this country will go so far right they won’t recognize it.
They’re just so ideologically blinded that they are like moths to a flame-they can’t help themselves.

i wish i were that confident of who wins the battle for power
conservatives may win but how long will it take to gain power
i have faith in americans but am afraid of how evil the left is and how prepared they are for the collapse

The Left has the advantage of not having to limit themselves in terms of tactics. The Right has fewer tools in their toolbox because they forgo tactics they consider morally evil. But the Left does not believe good and evil are real, therefore the ends justify the means, and there are no tactics that are off-limits, from election fraud to mass murder.

In case somebody drags up Hitler as a rebuttal to my claim, I would remind you that Hitler was a LEFTIST. National Socialism, remember? Please read Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism. Also, Oriana Fallaci’s The Force of Reason. The Right, properly understood, is what we understand as classical liberalism, i.e., the rights of the individual are sacred. The Left, properly understood, is all about government control of everything it can get hold of. Not to put too fine a point on it, but which category do you suppose Hitler falls in?

but playing defense we have to be right all the time.

It’s easier to be offensive and much tougher to play defense and that is true in defending America from the left.

We need to go on the offensive and take on the left directly. They fold like cheap suits when confronted. We have to get rid of our squish collegial appeasers on our side first, in order to take on the left.

I’m enthused to see more and more people” getting it ” regarding the true intentions of this administration. The intent is to collapse Capitalism and the Republic. Killing our domestic oil industry UNDER CAPITALISM…..only to be jump started under the newly formed socialist america…or whatever they chose to call the land mass know as North America.

There is a broader plan that co-insides with Cloward and Piven. If you use the bureaucracy to create what seems like unreasonable or even outrageous regulations and rules of compliance under our current Republic it sets the stage for the great transformation to a new system.

What better way to “sell” a new system than to purposely make the old system seem well….crazy…irrational ….and more importantly a failure. Then all you need to do is re-direct the bureaucracy to begin to turn toward common sense and you will find THAT bandwagon full of voters for your new re-branded from of Socialism / Marxism. Socialism being the more passive form and Marxism having the stronger arm!

Cass Sunstien representing the Socialist team and Rahm Emanuel the “GET IN YOUR SHOWER” Marxist team .

This is all the result of a generation of voters , including myself , that were too busy for civics 101 and anything more than simply voting. Pat McDounough a Maryland delegate says it best IMO….we need “super citizens” . As I get his definition he calls for people who do more than just vote and go back to what they were doing. We need a new civic diligence to keep an eye on our threatened liberties and freedoms.

My family is poised to move what we call a 10th amendment state. A state that utilizes the 10 th amendment to take a stand against the tyranny of the federal government.

What I would like to see is a state with Oil reserves open up a can on this federal tyranny and Drill Here drill NOW !!! I want my family to be around people with THAT kind of moxie!!! I want my son to know what it is like to be a real American!!!

    • swi2522

the state governors may very well end up saving the republic since washington wont

i am waiting for states governors to start telling the fed to mind their own business [i would say it in stronger terms] and start exploration of their natural resources without fed approval [ie montana]

Absolute power corrupts, absolutely. That goes for DC establishment Republicans as well.

We need to decentralize much of federal government back to state/local where there is more oversight.

Searching for the next Ronald Reagan to save us from ourselves is a low return probability.

Taking the party back ala Tea party, precinct project etc…is a huge step but taking DC down several notches will be tough.

I, too, am glad that more people are “getting it.” The question is: Will enough of us “get it” in time??

I’ve often wondered why more people don’t get it already; it seems so blatantly, indisputably obvious to me. I think there are two obstacles.

One is psychological: To face up to Obama & Co.’s real agenda is terrifying. How do you function from day to day knowing that there has been a Marxist coup in the United States of America? That’s depressing! And frightening. AND once you face up to it, you’re morally obligated to DO something about it; with knowledge comes responsibility. Most of us already have so many responsibilities, the last thing we want is more of them.

The other obstacle is social: Nobody wants to be a freak. Nobody wants the scorn and rejection that comes from one’s peers when you bring up things that threaten their comfortable state of denial. However, I suspect that many people have subtle, unspoken doubts and fears about the current situation, and for some people, our coming right out and articulating these things comes as a kind of affirmation/validation. They’re not going to hear it in our lackey media — so the only place they’ll hear it is from us.

The good news is that as more and more of us speak up, it will at some point, probably rather suddenly, become an acceptable view. Ace of Spades often writes about “preference cascades,” which he defines as “when once-falsified (falsified even to oneself) suppressed ideas are suddenly too glaringly obvious to be falsified any further and break, unexpectedly and tectonically, from the repressed subconscious to the conscious mind.”

We may be on the brink of a preference cascade. Let’s each do our part, with family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, toward reaching that critical tipping point.

      • Common_Cents

That will empower the rest of the ‘silent majority’ to finally speak up and take action.

It torques me to no end when I read here “oh its time for tea party to quit rallying and do something”. Huh? We need more and more rallies to empower people and let them know they are not alone.

Yes, we need to continue to take more action but rallies are an integral part of the marketing/PR mechanism that is essential to keep the movement going. It’s not an either/or but rather different functions.

        • jeffex11

we have a winner!!! you are exactly right my friend….the public display of Tea…PDT…is a great recruiting tool. Each event creates an interest in the movement . Many people discover that they too agree with the Tea Party once they take more than 30 seconds of a sound byte on MSNBC to hear about the movement.

The left has the goal of transforming out youth in their monopoly school system. We need people to get involved at the local level and especial in the PTA of our local schools .

It’s not rocket science. The reverse of the cause of how these people got this close to collapsing our system is what we need. A generation of people , including myself, that simply didn’t pay attention.

NOW we need simply to reverse that trend. I am doing my part and have seen other do the same.

Ironically, the same “community organizer” that is trying to kill America has show us the model for taking it back…….Get out there and inform…..be the modern day 4 minute man/woman.

Be patient as many people have short attention spans. Let yourself be know as a source of the truth and when the time comes and Obama’s policies directly effect their job, pay or price of food an gas….then they will seek you out and ask WHY?
