Jon Bruning Would Still Vote for Holder

If we ever desire to win a conservative majority even within the Republican conference, we must elect unvarnished conservatives in solid red states like Nebraska.  That’s why we are supporting Don Stenberg, a man who has held consistent conservative views, for Senate.

Unfortunately, Jon Bruning is spending a lot of money convincing people that he is something that he never was before he decided to run for Senate.  As Erick pointed out, not only did Bruning lobby for the confirmation of Eric Holder as Attorney General and Tom Perez as Assistant Attorney General and head of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, he refuses to admit it was a mistake, even after Holder has proven himself to be the worst man to ever hold that office.

Yesterday, Bruning doubled down on his support for Holder during an interview with a local radio station in Omaha.  What was even more appalling was his attempt to rationalize that support by suggesting that Holder was going to be confirmed anyway so he felt that it was prudent to be “reasonable” and “supportive” of guy who they’d have to work with.  Towards the end of the clip, he went on to assert that he definitely opposes some of the things Holder and Tom Perez have done in the Justice Department.

Folks, this statement exemplifies to the nth degree what is wrong with the current crop of GOP leaders in the Senate.  That is exactly what they believe; when you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.  A true statesman leads from the front and stands on principle even against the odds.  In this instance, he was urging sitting senators, not just state attorneys general, to support Holder.

It is simply astounding that somebody would so brazenly stand by their support for Eric Holder after his calamitous three years in office.  It is unconscionable that we would nominate this guy from a state like Nebraska.  I’ll say it again, and will keep repeating it throughout the campaign season: if we can’t elect reasonably consistent conservatives from states like this, then we should pack up our bags and forget about winning in politics.

We don’t have to settle for a ‘when you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’ Republican.  Let’s help elect Don Stenberg, a man who will vote and advocate against radical nominees, irrespective of how likely they are to succeed.

Folks, Brunning is a conservative. He sued the federal government over Obamacare. Bruning has been endorsed by the Tea Party Express and by Nebraska Right to Life. He is a consistant conservative.

Why in the world are we turning against conservative after conservative. Brunning is a conservative.

Don Stenberg is now running for the 4th time for the Senate. He has lost the first 3.

People can change I know but have you checked out his views from his college days ? The true conservative in this race is Pat Flynn but if you don’t have a law degree or haven’t been in politics before the so called “establishment” won’t even look at you.

I doubt that Bruning’s having supported Holder was related to a lack of conservatism. On the other hand, there is a certain amount of fraternity among lawyers; if you knew someone while in law school or worked at the same firm, or practiced regularly in the same court, you’re inclined to give him a break unless he did something to break that relationship (lie to you during the conduct of a case would be the chief example). Bruning’s record otherwise shows no sign that he is not a conservative.

On the other hand, Holder should have been scrutinized very carefully. His role in the Marc Rich pardon should have been a red flag that he was complicit in the shadier dealings of the Democratic Party.

I’ve supportive of most everything here at Redstate, but you guys really missed the ball on this one. Regardless of his stance on Holder, Jon is conservative. I’ve known Jon for a long time, since college, and while his views in college were not the same as today, he has held his conservative beliefs for a long time.

If I were going to support anyone besides Jon, it would be Deb Fischer or Pat Flynn. I love the ideas of both of them. While Stenberg SAYS the right things, I’ve met the man, and can’t stand the man as a person. I won’t hold my nose and vote for someone like that when other more palatable options are out there. I supported him when he was the nominee, and would support him IF he became the nominee, because the other option is a lot nastier. But in the primary, he won’t EVER get my support. Lets hope if he loses this time around, he’s done, because I’d like the younger generation of conservatives to carry the mantle now.

Thanks for letting me have my say, guys. Keep up the good work around here!

Bruning is one of three officials who publicly defended Nebraskans who oppose illegal immigration against daily allegations of being called Racists, hatemongers, the mob mentality etc by local newspapers, pro-illegal alien orgs and senators. In addition to supporting and assisting with NE immigration legislation, he filed an Amicus Brief with other states’ AGs in support of AL laws against B.O.s lawsuit. Bruning has filed lawsuits against the EPA some 19+ times, filed to stop Obamacare and has tightened restrictions against child molesters and he supports the Death Penalty. Most of Bruning’s endorsements and support is coming from within our state including many police/state patrol/sheriff depts and was also endorsed by AZ Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Bruning has gone against great liberal adversity and never once backed off of the illegal immigration issue. I don’t have to worry about him going along to get along and I truly believe he is the right person to represent NE in the Senate.
