Chicago Police Chief: Second Amendment Is A Danger To Public Safety

Chicago’s Chief of Police, who previously blamed ”government-sponsored racism” and Sarah Palin for Chicago’s gun violence, declared that the law-ful exercise of the Second Amendment was a threat to public safety. From the Illinois State Rifle Association:

Chicago’s embattled police superintendent dug himself deeper into a pit of controversy today by claiming that lawful firearm owners are agents of political corruption.  Appearing on a Chicago Sunday morning talk show, superintendent Garry McCarthy expressed his conviction that firearm owners who lobby their elected representatives or who donate money to political campaigns are engaged in corruption that endangers public safety.  McCarthy went on to express his belief that judges and legislators should rely on public opinion polls when interpreting our Constitution.

After totally dismissing the citizen’s right to redress grievances, McCarthy trained his constitutional wisdom on the 2nd Amendment.  Despite recent court decisions to the contrary, McCarthy opined that the 2ndAmendment limits citizens to owning smooth-bore muskets.  McCarthy went on to say that he believes that the 2nd Amendment supports mandatory liability insurance for firearm owners and the mandatory application of GPS tracking devices to civilian owned firearms.

“ Garry McCarthy ’s understanding of our Constitution barely qualifies him as a meter maid, never mind the chief of the nation’s third largest police department,” commented ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson .  “What on earth would possess McCarthy to assert that constitutional rights should be meted out based on public opinion polls?  Let’s not forget that public opinion polls once opposed a woman’s right to vote while it would be a safe bet that, at one time, polls would have shown lynching as an acceptable form of justice.  It has been said that our Constitution exists to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.  McCarthy’s view of our Constitution is dangerous and unbecoming of a civil servant.”

“McCarthy needs to understand that the lawful firearm owners of this state will continue to lobby their representatives and continue to support candidates who represent their interests,” continued Pearson.  “If Garry McCarthy doesn’t like that, well that’s just too bad.  If McCarthy is so interested in influence peddling, he should pop into some of the gin mills ringing the Illinois Capitol and count the ruddy red noses of taxpayer-funded lobbyists for the City of Chicago.”

McCarthy’s assertion that the Founders limited arms to smooth bore muskets is demonstrably false as well.

McCarthy has previously said that Illinois “does not have strict gun laws” and that stricter laws were needed in order to adequately combat crimes committed by those illegally possessing firearms.

It’s a concerning prejudice against law-abiding citizens from an official who has the authority to arrest and give orders to fire at them.

What do you expect from the leader of Chicago’s Blue Mafia? He can’t afford to be seen as the racist he doubtlessly is by stating the reality that the vast majority of Chicago shooting deaths are the result of blacks shooting other blacks because the Democrats Great Society has enslaved 3 generations of black people to failure and living on the Democrat’s Vote Plantation.

    • whthompson

Tbone, you’re correct. An overwhelming majority of murders are the result of black, male gangbangers killing other black, male gangbangers. Nearly all the shootings and homicides are confined to a dozen or so poor neighborhoods comprised high unemployment, broken families and high school dropouts. Decades of progressive plantation politics have completely destroyed these neighborhoods and families.

Also, McCarthy is a known idiot and moron who is viewed as an outsider and despised by the rank and file.

Check out heyjackass.com to get an idea of what the above looks like.

  • PaladinLostHour

Ah, Garry McCarthy -= a legacy of when the NYPD was still a fat-bottomed old boys club where Irish meant never having to say you were incompetent; who road the dubious benefits of Compstat to a deputy commissioner’s chair; and who is probably the only police chief of a major city to have been arrested for disorderly conduct (he was interfering with a NJ police officer writing McCarthy’s daughter a ticket – the old ‘I’m on the job’ routine didn’t cut it).

Check out the permanent white-boy overbite and Miami Vice circa 1986 razor stubble: http://blogs.wttw.com/moreonthestory/files/2011/05/mcCarthy.jpg – definitely the face of an authority on Consitutional issues.

  • joshinca

    OMG what an f–ing moron!

    • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

Uhm, I think he was using sarcasm.

      • joshinca

I was referring to the Chicago PC McCarthy. And there’s no way his comments were sarcastic, facetious or ironic.

  • norris

McCarthy has no idea of what is going on in Chicago or any place else. People with out a clue blame others for their incompetence . Chicago was such a nice safe place before Sarah Palin organized all of the gangs and addicted the city to drugs. Then she installed a bunch of crooked political hacks to run the city. The city didn’t stand a chance against a master mind like her.
Since McCarty doesn’t assist in arrest he should have no need for a gun or an armed escort.

    • FrauBudgie

Your black helicopter will arrive shortly … :)

    • junglecogs

Oh, oh; you forgot to blame Glenn Beck and the Tea Party. McCarthy is a loon (like all Marxist Democrats).

      • grayzel

Democrats come in all colors of leftist political philosophies. Why blame it all on Marx? I think the words collectivism or collectivist.

        • junglecogs

Marxists, Socialists, Democrats, Lefties, Left of Center, Far Left, Progressives, Liberals, Totalitarianists, Collectivists, etc. etc. etc. We dilute the truth by using multiple terms; they are all cut from the same cloth and they all have one thing in common; they are all DEMOCRATS!

          • siborg

            Conformicrats, statist, authoritarian control freaks.

      • rennyangel4

        And Bush.

        • jonweiss

I have long been amused by the humor that the Democrats create around Bush.

According to his left wing detractors, “Bush is the stupidest man on the planet”, yet dumb as he is, he was able to orchestrate 9/11 as an inside job and start two wars all under the radar and still get away with it without leaving a shred of open evidence, all without the Dems in Congress being able to stop him,

Pretty crafty for such an idiot, huh?

  • Tbone

His old Constitutional prof, Doc Sotero, taught him well.

  • http://politicalfireball.wordpress.com Politix Fireball

And the police chief is appointed by the mayor, so we really shouldn’t be surprised by that guy’s idiocy…still it is sickening!

  • kipling

Charles Wilson Peale painted Colonel George Washington with a colonial rifle. While rifles were not the norm in the military, many people on the frontier carried a rifle. In Virginia it was considered a gentleman’s gun. There is absolutely no reason to believe the Founders wanted to limit arms to smoothbore muskets, especially since a rifle was seen as a game changer on the frontier.

  • CJB68

How’s your mayor’s asking the gangbangers to stop shooting at people’s children working out for you, Chief?  How about putting your efforts into catching the killers and making sure they don’t get out of prison to do it again.

  • jiminga

Typical liberal, blaming his failure on some disconnected opinion, event or person. It’s surprising he didn’t blame Bush.

  • wrightclick

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to learn that McCarthy has a Nazi flag hanging in his garage and a pair of shiny German marching boots in his closet.

Gun control laws don’t control illegal guns. Gun control laws only control legal guns.

  • RedStateVet

So, the bill of rights has to be interpreted based on the technology available when it was written?? That would mean that speech can be controlled by the movement on any airwaves, the internet, or any publication written on a high speed printing press. This guy is a jackwagon.

  • banjojack1956

Aside from the fact that the Police Chief is either an idiot, a rubber stamp political hack, or both, the problem is one of perspective; if bangers are killing each other, we need to make sure they have more guns, not less, and when they have thinned each other out sufficiently, hang what’s left. Problem solved.

  • junglecogs

When I lived in Chicago, we always had some pretty darn good po-leece leaders. Now I guess the old joke is true: “The best police force money can buy” (Marxist Democrat Party money, that is).

  • reddog76

“It’s better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open mouth and remove all doubt”. No better way to label oneself “idiot” & “moron” than that.

  • funwithknives

Could there be an ‘organic reason’ why “Da’ Chief !” says and acts as he does ?
    Cross-connected home plumbing ?
Radon in his basement, in massive quantities?
He’s misplaced his tinfoil hat ? (… and get a matching mask while you’re at it, Garry…)
    Electrolyte imbalances?
Something slashing-movie ‘fearful’ in Chicago’s water that should be found-out ?
…or we could just use our Trusty Friend, Occam’s Razor, and ‘jest’ call him
incredibly moronic, or stone-stupid, and stop right there……..

  • WY_Cowboy

Garry McCarthy’s stupidity is a danger to public safety. I cannot believe with all of the violence in Chicago, this moron still has a job.

  • gadsden4256

Police commissioners all seem to be the stooges of political hacks. Chicago police commissioners are as political as KGB commissars. And why should we give ANY credence to any pronouncement from the CPD? Mr. McCarthy, you are little more than a clown, and I fart in your general direction!

  • loptr

Wrong, the second amendment is what is protecting us from exactly what our forefathers were concerned about, tyranny by the government. The federal g’ment can pass all the laws they like, but if the states thumb their nose at the federal g’ment, there’s not much they can do about it. So suck on that Obama.

  • $13644770

“McCarthy opined that the 2ndAmendment limits citizens to owning smooth-bore muskets”

News flash the 2nd amendment like the rest of them limits the government, and not the people!

  • Finrod

The Second Amendment is only a danger to government safety– as it was intended to be.

If McCarthy wants to limit people’s Second Amendment rights to what was available in 1789, then he should have no problems with having his own First Amendment rights to freedom of speech limited to what was available in 1789 as well. Voice and newspapers only for him!

  • 2War Abn Vet

Forgive him folks; he is from Chicago, and not expected to be rational.

  • gunluvr

Don’t bother to respond to people like him, he’s an appointed hack who can speak plainly and say what his elected “masters” want him to say, not that anything that he does say matters. I’m just glad that anti-gunners are being so open, combative and declaring what they really think.

  • gizmo

It is the job of a Police Chief to control the thugs, thieves & criminals in the metropolis of which he is elected. It is not his job to ‘make law” or to “interpret” the laws of which he is to enforce.
If this man were to actively enforce the laws that are on the Chicago/Illinois/Federal books, then his streets would be a lot safer, a lot cleaner that they are now, while he complains, whines & makes excuses for his lack of leadership & allowance of thugs to outsmart & overpower him.
This man knows that as long as his city is overrun by thugs, gangs & other criminals that even if EVERY gun were confiscated, outlawed that only those listed would HAVE them, even if every one of the firearms within the whole city, that these thugs, miscreants would just revert back to previously used weapons of chains, baseball bats, metal pipes, knives…
The only answer to real change, to real enforcement is a heart & mind for leadership, not for making excuses & pandering to the evil around us.

  • junglecogs

If I were a firearms manufacturer or an ammo manufacturer, I would cut-off all sales to The City of Chicago. Maybe this is one way to help take our rights and freedoms back – remind all of government that they work for us as public SERVANTS.

  • jmbreland

Chief McCArthy, you got it a bit wrong. You, I submit, are the imminent danger to public safety.

  • midwestmike

Gary McCarthy one more Chicago idiot. Since he has such a limited uderstanding of the Constitution he is clearly too INCOMPETENT be a police officer much less in charge of one. What a jackass

  • sovrncitzn

COPS are a “danger” to public safety. Remember the innocent people gunned down by NYPD? Two Asian women mistaken for a 270 lb black male, gunned down as they delivered newspapers. And just numerous cases of abuse, corruption and worse trough out the nation from small towns to mega city’s. Now they want drones, to keep us safe of course. Don’t worry all the one hour police state propaganda show’s NCIS, Flashpoint Hawii 50 etc..Will show you how the drone saved the day, (found the missing girl), (stopped the terrorist attack) whatever. So what does it mean when the government wants us disarmed, as they gun up the police with the weapons of war? I say disarm the police local and state and the law enforcement arm of the federal government.

    • PowerToThePeople

To be bluntly honest, your comment is plain out moronic and stupid. Nothing else needs to be said.

      • sovrncitzn

Well lets hear your brilliant idea?

        • PowerToThePeople

Oh sorry, you called that an idea? My fault, looked like ignorant ranting to me.

          • sovrncitzn

Still no Idea floating around in that empty space between your ears? You are either related to a cop, sleeping with one or you are one. Or you could just be a natural boot licker.

          • PowerToThePeople

So sad, you just do not know when to tuck tail and run. I mean, you made yourself a fool with your post, now you simply reinforce that fact with your follow up posts.

Best thing you could do is leave discussion on this site to the grownups and just keep lurking in your mommy’s basement waiting for the world to accept the tin foil life you have so embraced.

    • Bill S

Sorry, we don’t allow unhinged nuts to post here. Buh-bye.

  • gunnyg2002

When the inner cities melt down, those of us in Flyover Country won’t shed a tear.

    • atillared

When the inner cities melt down THEY will spill into the burbs and small towns and TAKE what they want out of OTHER PEOPLES HIDES.

      • Brian Andersen

Good luck with that. Out here we don’t have marxist policies against gun ownership.

    • sovrncitzn

And when the military and police come to take our food to feed all the zombies in the cities, that’s when the shooting will start.

  • atillared

A universal background check on the GOOD guys will do nothing except give the govt a LIST of who has what kind of firearm to confiscate in the future. The 1st thing tyrants do is take the guns/weapons from the masses. This is FACT since the dawn of time.
Black market guns are a problem globally and always will be.
The BAD guys WILL have guns no matter what USA does.
This will ONLY disarm the GOOD guys, who only want to defend themselves and family, and give the BAD guys the power to romp and stomp the GOOD guys into the ground. I was mugged once in Chicago and I never forget how helpless I felt.
Look at Chicago. Draconian gun laws for the good guys and over 520 dead in 2012 and so far the problem is looking at least as bad this year. The IL pols answer is to take guns from the GOOD guys or restrict them in the ENTIRE state, they even tried to take shotguns from the entire state of 13 million with a huge population of LEGAL hunters down state. The only place with a big problem is Chicago. This is a drug, gang and Chicago problem, NOT a huge state wide issue. Chicago needs to get it house in order, like enforce laws already on the books and STOP playing the race, politics game blaming the GOOD guys by passing feel good laws.
As a law abiding citizen if they TAKE my guns away and something BAD happens can I SUE the politicians that DISARMED me and prevented me from personal defense of my LIFE. Don’t forget that IL as NO death penalty and dead people cannot testify in court so why leave witnesses.
In IL if someone uses a bazooka to break down your door you are required to retreat, hide or run away and take NO action unless there is absolutely NO OTHER possibility and you are trapped. If you hurt or kill the bad guy in SELF-DEFENSE, even then if the BAD guy has a record a MILE long his relatives can SUE in CIVIL court where they only need 7 out of 12 jurors.
Before you do gooders get excited remember this could happen to you and YOU could be the VICTIM or the dead person.

  • soljerblue

Best I can figure, this moron is bucking to run for mayor of Chicago when Don Rahm steps down to run for — hah! — president.

  • sliverlining

Charlie’s brother Garry ought to preside over a different field of endeavor. Law enforcement, well, GOOD law enforcement requires a knowledge of that law and a little about people.
Perhaps a career in the food service industry will let him see the value of gun ownership AND provide the distance (about 3 feet) from the public that he really needs.

    • hmmathis

At least Charlie had and excuse for his stupidity: his head was made out of wood.

  • Abandoned

Mr. McCarthy and that pin-head Chief of Police perjurer in California who testified that there is no use for firearms in self defense -must have gone through the same academy or, at least have potty-trained together.

Yes Mr. McCarthy, firearms are dangerous. Especially so to those who would usurp our freedoms and seek to make us dependent on the Nanny State. It’s my sincere belief you are the greater danger. A person who is sworn to assist us in protecting our society while at the same time subverting our ability to protect ourselves. Isn’t this the same department that is fishing for a $12.00 an hour raise for its officers?

You’ve violated your oath of office and the only avenue left to regain your honor is to resign immediately and remove yourself from public life.

    Shame on you Mr. McCarthy!

  • rennyangel4

Certainly an excellent spokes person for Chicago. I wouldn’t go there if you paid me.

  • drdeano

That’s what Chicago thinks is the best person to be their Chief of Police… No wonder the city is drowning in blood and suffocating in fear. The man is a boon to crime and a beacon for idiotic behavior – Chicago is being systematically de-civilized and degraded.

While criminals no doubt love him, the good people of Chicago should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this man to be their Chief of Police. And their mayor may not be stupid, but he is deranged – he no doubt is loving the escalating murder rate as yet another ‘crisis’ not to be wasted…

And as to the escalating murder rate, they have nothing and no one to blame but themselves.

  • nealangel

No. Young black males are a danger to public safety. Deal with the problem, not the excuses.

  • romeg

Gotta love this guy’s logic: Illinois needs stricter gun laws in order to adequately combat crimes committed by those illegally possessing firearms. Well, if EVERYONE possessing firearms is possessing them ILLEGALLY, it sure as hell makes the job of law enforcement easier: If you have a weapon, you’re going to jail. Sort of reminds me of the slogan of the 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam: “Kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out.”

Between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve I drove, literally, the length and breadth of Illinois. You cannot go 5 miles along the interstate highways that bisect the state without seeing signs in a series reminiscent of the old Burma Shave signs all in support of the Second Amendment and the right to keep and bear arms. If the people and politicians in Chicago don’t want to be part of Illinois and it’s traditions, perhaps they should consider seceding from the state.

  • suzy000

If this man was a private citizen….there is no way in he11 he would support this stance. People say that cops put their life on the line everyday and they DO…but so do we when we have to go into the public and hope some madman or killer does not decide to pump a few rounds in us on our way to work or the grocery store or at the park. We live in a dangerous world and we do not have bodyguards to protect us. We only have our S & W/Rutger/Glock etc. to rely on and this jerk wants to take our last line of defense away. He is a coward….a real man would never deny an honest law abiding citizen the right to defend themselves….just a-holes like this who are brown-nosing up to liberal politicians! Not all law enforcement are like this nut…many out there are telling Americans to buy a gun. As a hard working American citizen who pays her bills and taxes ON TIME will be da-ned before she lets some pantywaste deny her of the right to defend her children and home! These people are total idiots!

  • siborg

“interpret the Constitution as per public opinion”??? Get bent you statist, conformicrat control freak.

The 2nd amendment is there to give the citizenry the power to overthrow a corrupt government and resist them until the Republic is restored. It is no surprise that such treasonous individuals in our Big government want a disarmed citizenry, to give them a monopoly of power and the ability to subjugate and forcibly ‘reeducate’ the non conformists in fly over country.

  • healer00

More evidence that liberalism is a mental disorder characterized by irresponsible behavior, delusional thinking, and the inability to understand common sense. Just hope he doesn’t run for higher office.

  • siborg

Activist judge overturns the will of voters in California over marriage, another judge overturns the will of the people in Arizona over providing identification, Congress strips ‘end of life panels’ from Obamacare and Kathleen Sebilius has them put back in on her say so, “the commerce clause is stretched to require you to make arrangements of your healthcare to meet the approval of the national government”, in a nutshell, THE REPUBLIC IS DEAD!

And now the control freaks and conformicrat authoritarians want you disarmed. Do you see the trend here?

“You don’t need a president-for-life when you have bureaucracy-for-life” Mark Steyn

  • harvey817

Did these idiots not take the oath to support and defend our Constitution? If they can not abide by their sworn oath, FIRE THEM.
Article VI section 2 states ” This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding. Section 3 says “all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the sevral states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution;”. It seems to me that a HELL of a lot of elected and appointed officials are violating our Constitution. Does the term impeach mean anything to anybody anymore?

  • commissionergordon

The Chief missed his calling. Should have been the Dean at Police Academy.

  • jonweiss

Is it any surprise that a man named “McCarthy” would go on such and Witch Hunt?

Is it any surprise that a crony of Rahmbo Emmanuel would make full use (abuse) of a crisis?

This cop is a full blown charlatan pushing a political agenda of his puppet masters, not a true law enforcement officer.

  • funksoul6

My Word! This so-called police chief is quite the douche-bag.

  • mrhuehls

Obviously the police chief is not capable of rational thought, and has closed himself off from the truth of the empirical evidence in the crime statistics of this country. Only in places where shall issue concealed carry prevails are gun crime statistics low.

  • robertg222

What else would you expect from a phony baloney cop. Truth is more guns equals less crime
    http://protectillinois.org/images/slides/moreguns_lesscrime.png
Of course less crime would mean less money for the police force so that is why top cops support gun control. They know it will help the crime business and keep them employed.
