MEMBER DIARY

The Left, the Media and Plans to Destroy Scott Walker

From the diaries…

Labor union bosses, trial lawyers and the Wisconsin Democrats have been out to end the political career of Governor Scott Walker since the moment he took office. His move to reform government employee union collective bargaining rights was a public relations spark that ignited a partisan heap of half-truths and electoral grudges. To date, Scott Walker and his reforms are still standing (and working!) in Wisconsin much to the chagrin of the Left.

Leading up to the June recall election in which Walker will defend his governorship, Democrats and Big Labor aren’t talking about collective bargaining reforms. According to an internal Democrat Party of Wisconsin memo reported on by Mother Jones magazine, Wisconsin Democrats are hoping to oust Walker by in part focusing heavily on what is known as the John Doe investigation.

In Wisconsin, prosecutors may launch secretive probes (hence the name “John Doe”) into criminal activities. John Chisholm, the Democrat District Attorney for Milwaukee County, has for 2 years now been running a John Doe investigation into former county government employees who held jobs while Walker was Milwaukee County Executive.

Interestingly enough, it was Walker who called for the probe to out suspected fraud.

After Walker took office as governor, Democrats began hinting that the John Doe would morph into a probe of Walker, and thus Walker could become Wisconsin’s own version of Richard Nixon. The first Democrat Party of Wisconsin television ad of the gubernatorial recall explicitly made the Walker-Nixon comparison.

Uncanny leaks about the activities of investigators have found their way onto the front page of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The paper, struggling to stay afloat financially, has prided itself on being skeptical of Walker and on having exclusive access to a string of insider information about the John Doe probe. It appears as if the integrity of the probe, led by a Democrat District Attorney, is compromised by the partisan nature of the leaks.

Wisconsin state law prohibits individuals with knowledge of a John Doe investigation from talking about it to anyone, including the media.

Just how partisan the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office is was revealed on Monday when Media Trackers confirmed that no less than 43 attorneys and staff members in the prosecutor’s office signed Walker recall petitions. More officials in the office may have signed, and the total number of matching names from the staff roster and names on recall petitions reaches as high as 70, though full confirmation of that number is still underway.

The partisanship reached to the highest levels, with one Lovell Johnson, Jr. a Deputy District Attorney who reports directly to elected Democrat DA John Chisholm.

Perhaps most interesting of all is the signature of Janet Oelstrom. Oelstrom is not an attorney, but she does work as a secretary in the tightly controlled and elite Public Integrity Unit, which oversees all John Doe investigations into public officials. As secretary, Oelstrom has access to a tremendous amount of information (all of it valuable to political opponents) including the John Doe probe into Walker’s county executive staff.

The presence of such a partisan individual handling sensitive information that could be used to inaccurately disparage a political opponent is troubling to say the least. That between 15% – 25% of the staff of the office running a probe speculated by Democrats to be aimed at Walker have such a partisan view of him calls into question their ability to professionally handle this case.

Oddly, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which normally holds itself up as a watchdog against abuse of government office, has chosen to bury this story and ignore it as much as possible.  Could it be that the liberal reporters and editors at the newspaper are providing cover for what increasingly looks like a politically motivated investigation into a conservative governor?

Let’s get this straight: Democrats in Wisconsin want to take Walker out by relying on the information they glean from this supposed-to-be-secret investigation. A Democrat District Attorney is leading this investigation and a tremendous number of his staff signed petitions to remove Governor Walker from office. The newspaper that gets all the well-placed leaks and tends to spin the story to favor liberals and Democrats is silent about this expose of partisanship and bias.

This looks like a classic case of a liberal media establishment, a far-left political party, and a highly partisan set of public officials trying to get away with destroying a conservative political opponent. If this is what it is, let’s hope it fails and kudos to the guys at Media Trackers who discovered the bias, partisanship, and horrible conflict of interest.

For full disclosure, I launched Media Trackers in Wisconsin and we’re currently expanding into other states.

of why recall elections should be outlawed except in the case of a felony conviction. The whole “we do not care he was voted in” attitude is absurd especially since a recall requires nothing more than a we do not like him signature drive.

Until Wisconsin voters from both side demand an end to this absurdity, they should stand embarrassed at the stupidity going on around them.

Elected public officials need to defend themselves in public elections.

      Recalls violate something.

        might sound great in 2014

Its time for the Wisconsin Attorney General, J.B. Van Hollen, a Republican, to start an investigation into the abuse of power being foisted by the Milwaukee County DA. The full resources of the State can be brought to bear on the petty tyrants in Milwaukee. We’ll see which rats run from the light of investigation.

    • zachv

Van Hollen. Actually getting off his rear. Hilarious.

  • greatp

This attack on Wisconsin Governor Walker is part of an Obama and the Democratic parties dirty tricks operation. When you see M.S.N.B.C.sending Ed Schultz and all those union thugs you know this comes directly from the White House.

  • greyeagle

What a bunch of liberal trash in Wisconsin. I can not believe that the Attorney General is letting them get away with the railroad job that is being done on Governor Walker. It just boggles the mind.

  • The_Gadfly

I’ve been meaning to stop by to make a small donation to his campaign, today I did. (Also stopped by Santorum’s site to help him pay down the debts.) The best way to stop this kind of crap is to win at the ballot box. I don’t live there so I can’t vote for him (well, I suppose I could if I were a Dem, but then I wouldn’t be donating or posting here would I?), so I’m doing the next best thing.

Recall is so rare that Scott Walker thought things would quiet down and once the budget reform began to work the public would approve and move on past the deadlock standoff that has crippled the state and that may remove by recall a governor elected 2010 to balance the books.

2010 saw the Senate and Assembly go to the Republicans also.

Several Republicans have faced recall and two were in 2011. A bare one vote holds Senate and he wobbles. Four more and the Lt Governor face a recall this round, not just Walker.

I have pondered for days why the governor is not getting the kind of institutional support and media respect all others have received. It may not be but the answer I arrived at is Liberals overwhelmingly own papers through chains just as they own the chain TV stations. Bill Oreilly exposed pres AP who was very biased at a conference for Obama. OReilly said the AP pres also owned many newspapers like Denver POST. Whatcha wanna bet that Wisconsn papers are part of a chain as are TV? And they are dominated by Democrats?

WIsconsin has no 50% conservative voice represented in the press or TV. It should. No one in press is making a strong case against recall nor are they criticizing the disruptive shutdown and occupiers the recallers do.

Walker gets no warm and moving photo ops lighting the Christmas tree, for example. He had as guests members of military. .A Recall banner sign was the photo I saw as they disrupted that too. An atheist was quoted denouncing him as intolerant for calling the tree a Christmas tree but no one else.

The recallers and opponents of Walker always are portrayed as positive strong invaders who shut down a neighborhood, a ceremony and interfere with the governor’s offical duties. They are entitled to take over and invade the governor’s public space is the running press narrative..

It is time for conservatives to get a voice! What does it take for these billionaires to buy some chains in states and put conservative journalists and anchors in charge? Otherwise corrupt papers and Democrats in collusion carryout day after day dehumanizng hatchet jobs on conservatives in office.’

We all lose big time as this stuff continues like the partisan packed investigation above and media bias. The press in Wisconsin for whatever reason is not fair by agenda design and are working hand in hand to destroy Walker and all connected to him. That includes the entire Republican establishment and party
For now we have to get out the message and vote—June 5

Facing a recall special election June 5 the elected governor and Lt Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch hit the campaign trail 20 miles north of Madison , the capitol.

At a Dane county farm with supporters they discsused their plans and listened to voter concerns. One supporter quoted opposed recall and wanted Walker to finish his term. Many voters oppose recall in general and very much in this case.

Earlier in the recall process Walker has said and Kleefisch has also said they are being recalled for doing their jobs and keeping their promises.

    … or the WI GOP?

So long as Republicans continue participating in the polite fiction of an unbiased non-partisan media, so long as we let people entrusted with public office violate their trusts with impunity, this is only going to get worse …

  • Aaron Gardner

They don’t have the funds, or even the ability to raise the type of funds needed to run a shop like Media Trackers. Even if they did, they wouldn’t be effective because they would never oust their own bad actors.

    My two cents.

  • Martin Knight

… and put it on YouTube?

There’s virtually no difference between this and the extended farce that so very very slowly stole Norm Coleman’s election day victory and handed it to Al Franken.

The MNGOP and the Coleman campaign decided to be “bipartisan” and not raise the alarm about how the MN Secretary of State Mark Ritchie was abusing his office until it was too late. Apparently, Coleman was worried that making noise would undermine the Minnesotans’ confidence in the office of the MN Secretary of State.

Here we have a clearly partisan DA’s office using privileged information in collusion with a partisan newsrag to influence an election.

There is absolutely no reason for the Walker campaign and the WI GOP to not call them out and name names. Yes, it would not be “bipartisan” and David Frum may not get invited to yet another cocktail … but this is war.

I am just acknowledging the reality that most state parties are weak shells of what they were pre-CFR. The left acknowledged this and moved quickly to adapt, using outside groups to do the operations that the Party could no longer do.

We on the right are beginning to adapt now, and outfits like Media Trackers are filling the void.

  • edintexas

Outfits like Media Trackers do not have the access to the public (and obviously that means through the media) that the politicians and political parties have. If Republican and Conservative politicians, and the state Republican parties, will not use the “ammunition” which groups like Media Trackers give them, then they are willingly conceding the matter to the other side without a fight.

Both sides are not doing the recall 2012. This recall is as one sided as they come as it expands and goes on month after month. Democrats and public unions are investing time and money to overturn the elections 2010 that elected a group of officials who wanted to balance the books and not raise taxes any more. This state has high taxes and Democrats had raised them a bil the year before.
    .

. The Ds were whupped badly in November 2010 and want to overturn that election. Public unions refused to sign a contract for 15 months when Ds were in power. When Walker won they went crazy.

They are recalling many Senators and Lt Governor as well as Scott Walker to overturn the election they lost 2010.

Tom Barrett the mayor Milwaukee who lost to Walker by five pts and 125,000 votes is frontrunner in Dem primary set for early May.
