It is snowing in Boston today. The Massachusetts Teachers Association is, notwithstanding the snow and holiday, doing what it can to get Martha Coakley elected.
They are running phone banks today to help out. There’s just one problem. The phones are there and ready to go, but no one showed up to make calls.
Would you want to get out in the snow to make calls for a woman who thinks Curt Schilling is a Yankee? I didn’t think so.
By the way, both Charlie Cook and Stuart Rothenberg now list the seat as leaning toward a GOP pick up. Suffolk Polling is showing Scott Brown significantly ahead in three bellwether communities.
The game ain’t over and Coakley can still win. But it is looking more and more like this will be a very historic upset.

I didn't realize she actually HAD any in-state phone banks

Or maybe I give far to much credit to people and their inability, unwillingness(?), to recognize when they are permitting overconfidence to shape their agenda.
Or as Rush made comment on early in November 2008, the Dem’s WILL over reach. They always do.
And they did.

Now if it was a regular work day and the union could get them off work to eat pizza and make phone calls, they’d be there with bells on. ‘Course, I betcha barely half the unionized public employees in MA are at work tomorrow; the unions will get them off, with pay, to do campaign work.

This is immediate validiation of the comment you made the other day Art.

That was Vassar's description of them.
Achance (Diary) Monday, January 18th at 12:16PM EDT (link)But the bottom line is with the big wall-to-wall public employee unions there’s little real loyalty. The only reason they’re members is somebody in HR told them in employee orientation that they had to go sign up with the union to keep their job. The trades, especially those with apprenticeships, have a lot more loyalty.
Teachers, though, are mostly Democrats because that’s what the Ed Schools make them into, doesn’t have much to do with NEA/AFT also being Democrat fronts.
In Vino Veritas
This is why this is a FAIL on the Donks part
Richard Mullins (Diary) Monday, January 18th at 12:13PM EDT (link)Yeah, no union member ever going to give up a holiday for this. Whether it’s state, local or Federal, giving up a Holiday is a non-starter. Sure tomorrow they do it, but it might be a little too late to stop the momentum.

Its tough being a Republican in the area bought when we win its all more happier. Best of all Brown has run on low taxes, against ACLU, and against health care and he appears to be on winning side of the issues
This gives hope to Republicans in NE that we gain house seats we lost, take out Patrick in RI, challenge some of these Dems in MA who have not been challenged in while, and fight to hold our Gov Mansion in many of these states
Go Brown Go!
sniff, sniff. Is that burnt toast I smell
sharonmcp (Diary) Monday, January 18th at 12:19PM EDT (link)Ok, I know we’re not supposed to count our chickens, but please indulge me a bit of cautious optimism.
At 12:18 P.M. Intrade has Brown 66.2, Coakley 35.0.
And the article I just read on Pollster.com just brightened my day immensely.
“But no matter how you slice the data, the only reasonable conclusion is that Scott Brown has moved from well behind to a lead somewhere between 4 and 11 points.”
“Above all, we must realize that no arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women.” ~ Ronald Reagan
Actually, what makes me cautiously optimistic is
mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, January 18th at 12:34PM EDT (link)the anecdotal stories I keep reading from MA residents everywhere. Almost every blog has comments from folks there about the race. In addition, the comments on newspaper stories are shocking. I would have thought that a story in the Boston Globe would draw comments on the order of Kos, but even they’re leaning Brown. Same for the NYT.
Oh, and yesterday the Globe actually printed a story that sounded like it could have come from the RNC about this race and Obama’s involvement.
Combine all of that with the polls and the reporting – at like 100% of reports – that there is no excitement in Marcia’s camp, oops, Maria’s camp and I’m really excited.
Since 1970 I am 0-7 voting for the Republican

No calls yesterday
clintonformccain Monday, January 18th at 12:31PM EDT (link)OK, I’m on every Democratic call list in Massachusetts. My wife donated to the Obama/Coakley campaign and has attended her fundraisers. Since before the primary, we have been bombarded with phone calls: DNC, SEIU, Emily’s list, Obama/Coakley campaign, Conservation League, etc. to the point where we both wanted to just scream.
I did not get one phone call yesterday. Nothing. Not one.
My guess is that the Obama/Coakley campaign has pullled back and is focusing all its efforts in (how can I put this tactfully) neighborhoods that are more likely to be a part of the “new” Obama/Democratic “coalition” and less likely to target “Reagan Democrats” and independents. My Massachusetts town would be an obvious write-off in this kind of strategy.
