EDITOR OF REDSTATE

The Year of the Freedom Fighter

People close to the Jane Norton campaign are pushing out that Governor Palin will be endorsing Norton on Saturday in Colorado.

I hope that is not the case, but all indications are that it is. Governor Palin and I were on stage together Friday in South Carolina for her endorsement of RedState friend Nikki Haley. We’re also together with Rand Paul and others.

It is okay to not always be together on endorsement. Fred Thompson endorsed Dan Coats against Marlin Stutzman. That makes him no less a friend.

In Norton’s case, it is similar to Fiorina, though to my knowledge Jane Norton has never made the disparaging comments about Palin that Fiorina has. And yes, you Fiorina people, some of the statements about Palin that Fiorina has made in the past make even people who don’t care for Palin uncomfortable.

But like Fiorina, Norton is heavily tied into the McCain apparatus to which Governor Palin has shown great and understandable loyalty. Jane Norton is Charlie Black’s sister-in-law. Mr. Black was John McCain’s 2008 political consultant. Consequently, Ms. Norton was John McCain’s state campaign chair for Colorado.

I get it.

What I don’t get, and do hope the news is wrong, is why Jane Norton would push for Governor Palin to endorse her this Friday or Saturday. Doing so would put Governor Palin in the awkward position of ignoring Colorado’s Republican grassroots activists, the bulk of whom will be convening for the Republican Assembly this weekend. After the Fiorina endorsement caused a wave of muttering among grassroots activists, this would not be a good thing.

Ken Buck has the grassroots in his corner. It’s readily apparent across the state. Consequently, Jane Norton is going to bypass the Republican Assembly this weekend and try to collect signatures to get on the ballot. But make no mistake about it, to change the narrative about Norton bypassing the grassroots, she is vying to get a Palin endorsement late this week.

I’m sure Governor Palin does not realize what is going on, given that many of us looking at Colorado had to have explained to us the intricacies and timing of the Republican Assembly, but it is this weekend, Jane Norton is skipping it, and her campaign is, I’m told by multiple people including reporters in Colorado, setting Governor Palin up for a very awkward moment — an event designed to put the spotlight on Jane Norton competing with an event designed to showcase the Republican grassroots in Colorado.

Hopefully this is all much ado about nothing and Governor Palin will, at best, join Senator Jim DeMint and me in supporting Ken Buck. At worse, we can agree to disagree.

There is, however, a larger issue here worth exploring.

Many in the Republican establishment are trying to send us back to 1992. That was the much heralded “Year of the Woman” in politics. Never mind that it was the year of the liberal woman. That was the year it was celebrated.

This year, however, the GOP seems intent on wanting to have its own. More troubling, they are trying to mix it up with the word “conservative.” More troubling, these campaign types — consultants and party officials — are trying to use good conservative individuals and organizations to help push the narrative. One must wonder if the consultants pushing this are trying to get business for themselves based on who they can get to endorse various candidates. That is the way the game is typically played.

If it was really the year of the conservative woman, you would see the entirety of the GOP rushing to Arizona to support Pamela Gorman, then to Tennessee to support Robin Smith, then to Delaware to support Christine O’Donnell, and a good portion would go to South Carolina to get Nikki Haley elected and head over to Georgia to help Karen Handel.

You want conservative women? There you have them. And there are others too.

Of Jane Norton, Sue Lowden, and Carly Fiorina, Norton is the most properly identified as conservative, but not one of these women has given any indication of being anything other than soldiers of solidarity with the GOP establishment — the one that regularly compromises in favor of bigger government.

My old preacher used to talk about “Christ-followers” instead of Christians. His reasoning was pretty simple. Most everyone in the South and a lot of others call themselves Christian, but not all of them actually follow Christ. It’s just acceptable social parlance. In the same way, most Republicans call themselves “conservative” when few of them are.

How many are actually freedom fighters? In the grand scheme of things, very few. These alleged “conservative” Republicans routinely enter into compromises with the Democrats in favor of government, not free markets and free people. They nibble at the edges and quibble with the grassroots.

We need actual freedom fighters. Let’s not have a “year of the woman” or even a “year of the conservative”. Let’s have a “year of the freedom fighter.”

And when you do that, you must look to see who out there has fought for freedom and who can identify others. I would argue the best leader on this front is Jim DeMint.

Not only is Jim DeMint a real freedom fighter, he is also in the United States Senate. So if you want to find out from a freedom fighter who would fight for freedom the best in the Senate, why not ask Jim DeMint.

If you do, you’ll find him going with Ken Buck, Marco Rubio, Pat Toomey, and Chuck DeVore. I’d add Danny Tarkanian to that.

And on the House side, add Pamela Gorman and Robin Smith. There are others too, but let’s focus on these for now — if you want a Year of Women, go with Pamela, Robin, and add in Nikki Haley and Karen Handel.

You want a year of conservatives, use the full list. Same with freedom fighters.

Let’s not look to labels, but to actions. If we do that, we know Jim DeMint has the best track record of identifying the people we need in the Senate.

You can agree or you can disagree. But hopefully you can agree with me that too much is on the line this year for campaign schtick about the year of anything other than this being our best chance to push the Congress significantly to the right in a long time. And we should abandon the pretense of worrying about our win-loss record. It was that worry that led Republicans to support Charlie Crist and Arlen Specter — allegedly sure winners.

We must push forward with real freedom fighters — not Republicans who call themselves conservative without actually being conservative. There is too much at stake to do otherwise.

There is little doubt that Palin believes in finding conservative female candidates and throwing her support behind them. There is nothing wrong with this, it is an admirable and courageous thing to do. Governor Palin takes pride in carrying the mantle for conservative females and she does a damn good job at it. With that comes endorsements of Fiorina, and Norton, but also one of Nikki Haley. She has also endorsed Susana Martinez for Governor of New Mexico who is absolutely a conservative stalwart who deserves more coverage by activists like us. I also would caution equating Fiorina and Norton’s conservative credentials; as Norton is the much more credible conservative.
ps. Erick why does Susana Martinez not have an endorsement from Redstate? She is the real deal. A female Rubio.

  • rrreaganite

I would also like to add that although, I would often prefer an endorsement of the more conservative candidate like Devore, I understand why Sarah Palin has such a passion for electing conservative females. As someone who was butchered by the press and sort of broke a glass ceiling in regard to conservative women, naturally she will reach out to women who she thinks are conservatives. As a conservative male, I may disagree but like Erick, I am not disagreeable when it comes to Palin.

ignoring the will of “We The People”. We already have a bunch in DC that are doing an outstanding job of ignoring the will of the people. We also have a credible bunch in state houses that are just as good at ignoring the will of the people because they know what is best. They think that we are just ignorant and uninformed. Ms Norton ignoring the Colorado Assembly speaks volumes about her agenda.
I am an admirer of Gov Palin. She is the poster child of grassroots acvtivism. I hope she realizes the “setup” before she endorses Ms Norton.

If Sarah Palin is a true conservative, she will not endorse Norton. Norton is deeply tied to and indebted to the Republican Party establishment that helped create the fiscal fiasco we’re faced with today.
Today, Ken Buck will be on the radio show I co-host – The Cari and Rob Show – at 10 am MT. We’ll ask him about Palin’s pending endorsement. You can hear the show online at www.CariAndRob.info or on 55 Country (AM-550) out of Craig, CO.

Ken Buck’s budget as Weld County DA has increased every year he has been there. The budgets under Jane Norton’s control when she was Lt. Gov. decreased. She’s actually decreased the size of government in practice, while Ken Buck has not.

Whom do you trust? The one that says it, or the one that does it?

Comparing Sue Lowden and Carly Fiorina to Jane Norton is just wrong. Norton is nothing like the other two. You can add caveats all you want, but you’re still lumping them together for a reason.

Let’s remember, this isn’t about Buck vs. Norton. It’s about DeMint vs. McConnell.

  • http://www.cariandrob.info robdouglas

Lt. Governors do not “control” the budget.
As Lt. Governor, Norton supported Referendum C, the largest tax hike in Colorado history.
Norton is no fiscal conservative and her financial support comes from those in the establishment who’ve been at the scene of the fiscal crime for decades. It’s time for them to be swept out of power.
Erickson is correct. Buck is the conservative choice.

  • Scope

and to make this election about “Moma Grizzlies” is to say that only women can lead or govern properly. It is in itself setting up a gender war in Republican politics. You are right Erick, in this critical election cycle, it should be about who is the best candidate. It is a tremendous mistake to do anything else. Palin seems to be drawing a line in the sand which will only alienate her “even further” with the conservative base.

From 2005 to 2009 the Weld County DA did increase spending by 30%. Weld County needed to expand its District and County courtrooms. During that same time frame the population of Weld Country grew by 41%, while the crime rate dropped by 50%. Sounds to me like Ken Buck and the Weld County DA made a pretty good investment when you factor in the large drop in crime.

She cut spending. She’s shown fiscal conservatism.. And of course you didn’t say anything about Buck raising his own budget year after year. Ref. C is a valid issue, and Norton should not have supported it. A lot of good conservatives did support it though.

There’s no discernible difference between Buck and Norton. All the grassroots activists that I know say there would be no difference between them on major votes as a Senator. That’s why both sides are taking cheap shots and pushing innuendo to try to create a difference.

They’re both backed by outsiders. For all this talk about grassroots support in Colorado, it sure doesn’t include money. Buck continues to disappoint in fundraising, even after winning the Caucus straw poll. The majority of his money is coming from a company that’s benefited significantly from bailout and earmark money from Washington. He has Washington-based organizations running the bulk of his ads for him.

There’s simply no way you can say Buck is the outsider and Norton is the insider. They’re both insiders. This is the reason why I supported Ryan Frazier until he was forced out.

The longer this nastiness goes on, the better chance we give Bennet/Romanoff to pull this thing out. Eventually the grassroots are going to get sick of this crap and many of them will just stay home and wait for the next one.

  • zollistar

This form of political correctness is just as pernicious on the conservative side as it is on the other side.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

Ken Buck has never decreased the size of government, but Jane Norton has. When you’re told by someone they’re going to do something, wouldn’t you believe the person that has done it more than the person that says it?

she can kiss my vote goodbye in 2012.

It seems that with things being similiar between the candidates, Palin prefers endorsing pro-life women.

Much of Mitt Romney’s support is the fact he is a Mormon.

Much of Huckabee’s support come sthe fact he is a Southern and Christian pastor.

    Conservatives vote Indentity Politics too.

I am not fond of choosing gender of ideas. We shoudln’t be doing what the other side has done to sing the praises of women at the expense of honoring men in our society.

Even when I would read that book “The little engine that could” to my son, I had to change the gender of the engines as I read it to him. All the helpful good engines are shes and the unhelpful lazy engines are hes. Check it out.

  • cwilson

It seems that with things being similiar between the candidates, Palin prefers endorsing pro-life womenwomen who claim, despite evidence to the contrary, to be pro-life.

Not casting aspersions at Norton, but at Fiorina, who somehow has managed to fool several CA right-to-life groups…

  • CincoSolas_del_Bronx

which I recall having a more realistic distribution of the virtue/vice spectrum across the genders, not to mention (at least in the earlier books) a much more pleasantly male-skewed workforce, and “topping” all, the quintessential beneficient sovereign!

requires that she be very discerning and careful in these matters. She could easily ruin her brand, I think (also see houstoneagle, above). If there is a pothole ahead and others see it, she had better see it too.

my son loved “The Little Engine that Could” even though my husband and I both hated reading it to him.

I agree Thomas is much more fair to the genders and we did indulge his interests in those books.

  • joayn

and understand what skipping the Republican Assembly means and endorses Norton, her endorsements will be renderred moot, as they should be. I don’t see how she could spin this like she did for Fiorina and not get heavily slammed.

It will be her third strike, if you will. McCain and Fiorna, then Norton. There’s only so much her supporters are willing to forgive.

The door is about an inch open and ready to close. If Palin supports Norton now under these circumstances, my guess is that the doors slams shut and Palin’s endorsements will join the ranks of the D.C. GOP.

  • chuckl

    dear robdouglas,

The current financial crisis was caused by the Economic Reconstruction Act of 1977 which was passed by democrats under Jimmy Carter. This act required Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to move most of their financing into inner city locations which were sold to those unable to make the mortgage payments. It eventually resulted in adjustable Rate Mortgages which suckered those unable to pay the mortgage after the guaranteed rate increase into buying houses that they could not afford.

Each and every Republican attempt to fix this problem was defeated by the majority democrats, which included the current Kenyan occupant of the Oval Office.
If you must throw rocks, at least aim them at the correct target.

  • liberty131911

I can forgive Governor Palin her support for John McCain, a despicable, self-serving, downright liberal politician (please forgive the multiple redundancies) if ever there was one. He did after all bring her to our attention, regardless of his probably cynical motives, and loyalty can, and probably should be, considered a virtue.

However, even though I was rather sanguine or at least understanding of her position on McCain, her support for Fiorina almost took her off any of my lists of candidates to support for any office. I don’t know enough yet about Norton to make an informed judgment, but if Gov. Palin continues to endorse Republican establishment candidates over conservative/libertarian candidates I’m afraid she’s going to make my “don’t support under any circumstances” list.

We don’t need any more supposedly conservative Republicans voting as thought they are part of the liberal Democrat party. What we do need is for the Snowes and Collins, McCains and the others we all know and *******, to be like Arlen Spector and just admit to who they are.

And we all need keep paying attention, do our research and not be conned so that we find ourselves saying he/she is a conservative, why in the world did they vote for that, support him or her. do that liberal thing, fill in your own blanks……

  • vinick

Scott Brown, Mark Kirk, Tom Campbell, Dan Coats, Sue Lowden, and Mike Castle are all on their way to rebuilding the Rockefeller Republican brand in the Senate. We can never build a majority again if the Tea Party and the social conservatives keep trying to force out any Republican who does not conform to their strict interpretation of what it means to be a member of the GOP. There is a reason why “Conservative” and “Republican” are not synonymous, and it should remain that way. Conservatives won in Florida and seem poised to win in Kentucky. Moderates won in Illinois and Indiana. We’ll see what happens in California and Nevada but my money is on Campbell and Lowden. If that happens we’ll be well on our way to rebuilding the big tent, and we might actually shut up those ignorant fools who keep saying the GOP is destined to become a regional party.

  • http://www.cariandrob.info robdouglas

Your myopic, selective blame ignores the role that many Republicans played for many years in spending this country into oblivion. If you think that it is only the Economic Reconstruction Act of 1977 that got this country into the financial hole we’re in today, than there’s no point in a discussion with you as you demonstrate a willingness to blind yourself to the truth while also demonstrating the rank partisanship that has benefited the political class in Washington while selling out America’s future.

  • positiveenerg

You couldn’t be more spot on about Pamela Gorman running in AZ3. There is no one in the crowded field who can come CLOSE to providing us with the knowledge and certainty that he/she will be the ideological anchor in the storms that will not ONLY stand up to the Democratic establishment, but will also stand up to Republicans who mistakenly think they have a “rubber stamp” for whatever compromise or deal they agree to like Gorman will (and HAS).

You can talk the talk … or like Gorman you can walk the walk. AND rather than merely voting the right way from the tall grass on a “scored” vote … or getting left off a bill as it’s moving toward passage to preserve a “voting record” Gorman has demonstrated that she will SPEAK UP on issues … and be a free market conservative anchor in the storm. She’ll speak up, she’ll work with center/right conservative and free market think tanks, she’ll educate herself and others and work to build coalitions of free market conservatives that even Republican leadership will have to account for.

She just spoke at her 3rd International Conference on Climate Change, sponsored by the Heartland Institute. She’s having an event here from 4:30-6:00 pm at the Marriott Miracle Mile (540 N Michigan Ave) in the Dupage Room on the third floor. Come and bring your checkbook and credit card. Or, visit www.gorman2010.com and click “Donate”.

I do not care if someone is male, female, black, brown, white, purple polka-dotted, or some combination thereof. If they love the founding principles, preach Madison and not Marx, and vow to take their oath of office seriously every second of every day they will get my support.

We have gone too long vering off the course the framers set us upon. It is time to unmask the lies of social justice that were made up by politicians to explain the phenomina that occur when political power is used to supress employment and market competition, and to shove the blame for the mess they create through meddling off on someone else. Free market justice is the only real justice and for that to occur and raise all boats we have to clean up the corruption and put the government back in Constitutional order.

Be it man or woman for the job, I care not. I only care that is done.

Like in Utah. Ask Bob Bennett.

Want an incentive to get the Sarah Palins of the world to endorse the best of the “real” conservative in a given race? Then get as many conservatives to flock into the Party where you are as precinct committeemen.

Look, if Palin is entertaining any thoughts of running in 2012, if she sees a sea-change in the grass roots ranks of the Party in a given state, because conservatives are flocking into the Party (and believe me, she’s in a position to find this out if she wants to, and I’m sure she’s got those numbers), she’ going to go with the BEST “real” conservative if she possibly can, because it’s in her best interests to do so (again, assuming she wants to run again in 2012).

Arizona is a special exception because of whatever deal she had with McCain. My guess is Palin is not seeing a huge influx of conservatives into the Republican Party PC ranks in Colorado or, even if a large influx is happening, she’s beholden to Norton because of the McCain deal she struck (I’ll make you my VP, but in the future you have to endorse me, Norton, etc.).

A lot of people reference this “conservative base” of the Republican Party. If that base really exists, it would be much more effective, and be feared, if it took itself INSIDE the Party itself — into all those thousands and thousands of vacant precinct committeemen slots.

Let’s make this “The Year of the Conservative PC.” Who’s with me?

    For Liberty,
ColdWarrior, PC (that?s ?precinct committeeman,? not ?political child!?)
Conservatives, UNITE! CHANGE the Republican Party and save the world by UNITING INSIDE the Party as precinct committeemen. NOW!

Currently all women Senators favor abortion. The only pro-life woman Senator was Liddy Dole. We need more pro-life women Senators to blunt the notion that for a woman to be successful, she has to embrace late term abortion.

He used the energy and momentum of the Tea Party to get himself elected and now is practically a Democrat anyway, He supports Kagen for heaven’s sake! Now sure a liberal Republican in MA might be better than any Democrat but barely and that position is really only self serving, Brown can use his wishy-washy position to leverage favors on votes when it serves his interests, vote Democrat when it benefits him and vote Republican when it benefits him, he’s really the worst type of politician there can be. Allowing more like him is the worst idea for the party.

Sorry vinivk…Big Tent was SOOOO 90′s! While the GOP was building their big and beautiful tent…they forgot to watch the baby fall in the pool and nearly drown! So kindly get out of our way while we try to save this baby; let us seat DeVore (principle, backbone and REAL strength) and he can join the likes of Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul and a hand full of other Freedom Fighters and fix this miserable progressive mess and restore the Greatest Nation on God’s earth!

IMO, no. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m tired of “real Americans” with winning smiles (or a base guitar) getting into office and eschewing any conservative/libertarian principles that they campaigned on. Give me an unpolished city slicker who does right over a “real American” who makes pretty speeches but folds (or doesn’t have principles) every chance they get.
