Arlen Specter is no more. Hahahahahahaha. This makes the fourth person in a statewide race to lose after Barack Obama campaigned for him.
Trey Grayson went down in flames to Rand Paul, who openly embraced the tea party label.
Tim Burns lost the special election in PA-12, but will now run in the general election for November against the Democrat. It is important to note that the Democrat, Critz, to get the win had to run to the right, repudiating large portions of Barack Obama’s agenda.
In Arkansas, it looks like Blanche Lincoln will make it into a runoff, but her margin of victory is so close to Lt. Gov. Halter, she could lose the run off. She too ran against Barack Obama.
The only Democrat to survive out and out the night running to the left was Joe Sestak. And Pat Toomey is going to beat him in November.
Oh, and on Saturday, Charles Djou, a Republican, is going to win in a heavily Democrat district in Hawaii.

I'm disappointed about Critz and worried what it portends.
the_invisible_hand (Diary) Tuesday, May 18th at 11:52PM EDT (link)Look, I understand you are putting a nice face on it because you are optimisitc and we can’t very well give up, but the spin doesn’t make sense.
If the candidate on the right is going to win, then why didn’t Burns win? I mean, if this proves you have to move right, then why wouldn’t the guy further to the right than Critz win?
I think it illustrates that the enthusiasm gap is closing and we can’t rest on our laurels about the rosy national numbers picture. These races will not be won because of the national numbers or what people think about Obama.
These House elections are going to be won or lost in the ground game. I think Burns lost because we are losing our fire. I sincerely hope we are not peaking too soon. I hope that some have not begun to relax and think we are just in 1994 all over again.
This will be different than 94. We have to win this war and not fight the last one.
Democrats are likely to get more urgent as we go forward and their turn out will likely be high by election day. Meanwhile our guys have been in the trenches since January 2009. We can’t let up! We can’t get tired. We can’t relax!
We don’t need to spin this race as a positive. We need to use it as a fire alarm to inspire the troops. Critz is what happens if we relax. This war is just beginning. It is certainly not over!

You can’t waltz into a 2-to-1 Dem district an expect an “easy” win. In fact, you probably shouldn’t expect a win at all.
That said, we don’t need to win districts like this to win back the House, despite the fact that we may very well win this one too, in November…
The district voted for McCain!
the_invisible_hand (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 12:04AM EDT (link)There was no excuse for lack of turn out then and the district voted McCain.
People must understand this is not a small deal. This was winnable. We let up pressure and this needs to be a lesson.
No one is giving us anything. We have to get in the mindset of taking it and not just in Republican districts. You don’t take the country back by just winning Republican districts. A national wave requires winning where you usually don’t win.

Dems had to spend a lot on this
finaljeopardy Wednesday, May 19th at 8:18AM EDT (link)Murtha was an embarrassment to any sane electorate, which obviously wasn’t PA12. I think they ran the wrong campaign here. I saw an online commercial with the Tea Party and the Revolutionary War and then Burns, a nice guy but not the fire in the belly from this ad. That’s not the mood of this district run by unions and fed a steady diet of pork for decades. They wanted the economy fixed and the corruption cleaned up a little, but they’re not revolutionaries. An emphasis on the Tea Party instead of the candidate just motivated Democrats.
The district can still go to Republicans in the next election. Maybe try a different approach. It seems Critz is just “conservative” enough for them now.

spainishirish (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 12:00AM EDT (link)It also shows how far to the right a Democrat must run in a district that favors his party by a two to one margin. There are several lessons to be learned here, obviously, and they will prove quite useful come November.
I agree. I hope we learn the lessons.
the_invisible_hand (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 12:07AM EDT (link)I don’t know about the meme concerning Critz moving right to win. Because if the deciding factor for voters was which candidate was further right, then Burns would have won.
I think this shows that party loyalty is still strong in both parties. And for a national wave we will have to outwork our opponent because national waves require winning swing districts and some blue districts.
This district…one that voted for McCain/Palin and is traditionally conservative is the type of district we should be able to win in this national mood. But again, we have to take it. No one will hand us the reigns of government.

I think Independents didnt participate because they have had a stomach full of Democrats and are looking elsewhere. Rand Paul kicked booty because his supporters are energized.
That said, we have to keep playing until the whistle blows. That will help keep the Conservative message from being blindsided by election shenanigans that the left is so good at pulling.

The PA State GOP apparatus is a problem
nepanyrush Wednesday, May 19th at 4:25PM EDT (link)Burns was the handpicked choice of the PA State GOP apparatus. He is a poor candidate, chosen probably because he is a multimillionaire. He did not even vote in the Bush/Gore election. Why he was selected over Russell was a mystery and why Red State supported him over Russell was also a mystery. Russell was a proven conservative candidate, but one hated by the Chairman of the Republican State Committee, who allegedly even voted for Murtha because Murtha was good for his insurance business.
The PA State GOP is corrupt and poorly run. I could tell many testimonies about it and how badly it is run. Suffice it to say that the State GOP had endorsed Specter over Toomey and in this election paid a lot of dollars for a Republican gubernatorial candidate Corbett to put out a vicious attack piece against another Republican gubernatorial candidate (Rohrer) who was much more conservative, and for support for a Congressional candidate linked to the Bufalino Crime Family (Marino) over a true and honorable Republican candidate (Madeira), who lost by only 6,000 votes — probably because of the State GOP support.
You need to fix the State GOP before you start getting victories in PA again.

Dig a little deeper.
CowboyUp4419 (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 1:09AM EDT (link)Aside from the special election to fill the balance of Murtha’s term the primary for both parties was today as well and Critz and Burns both won there so they’ll face each other again in November. We can also extract all sorts of information from those results as well.
First off, look at how the deck was stacked in the special election:
Registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 2-1 and the Pennsylvania primary is closed so anyone unaffiliated with either party so independent turnout was depressed. Independents could still vote in the special election but they’d have been treading to the polling place and standing in line to vote in one race and one race only. Ballot totals in the primary election reflect this as the major Democrats managed over 80,000 votes between them while the major GOP candidates got 45,000 and change. As I type with a couple precincts still to report there were over 126,000 votes cast in the closed 12th district primary and 134,000 votes cast in the special election so if I can do arithmetic that means independents were only 6% of the vote today.
Despite every advantage Critz had he won by less than 10% of the vote.
You want some more good news? The Democrats running in the 12th district primary got over 80,000 votes between them but in the special election Critz only got 71,000. Even if we assume every one of the 3,000 votes in the special election that went to the libertarian candidate came from a registered Democrat then that still means over 6,000 registered Democrats pulled the lever for Burns in the special election. Our future looks very very bright.
If you're right why didn't we just wait until November?
the_invisible_hand (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 1:22AM EDT (link)I’ve got to admit I’m frustrated with our movement here. I was told by this site and other conservatives that we had a good shot to make national waves and win this seat.
Now I’m hearing how the special election was going to tilt Dem because of the overall primary process of the day boosting Dem turnout. We knew all of this before we made play for the race. We knew this when people were soliciting bums like me for money to help win.
Why did Erick come on RS earlier today and say Burns was looking good? Did he not know what you guys now know about the steep climb?
When people were soliciting money for Burns under the guise that he had a great chance of winning, did they do so dishonestly?

Burns was a candidate I was informed had a good chance of winning and on that information I donated as much as I could to help him. Once he loses, I’m told the exact opposite. I’m told he was always unlikely to win and that he has a better shot in November because the primary season this time was going to boost Dem turnout. I didn’t hear that when I was asked to donate.
I did not intend to personally insult you or anyone else. I retract anything that insulted you, but I will not retract my dismay and anger over the shift in rhetoric that followed this loss. I hope you can understand the anger and dismay. It is frustrating to hear, now, that this campaign was likely a losing battle and that I could have saved my money for November when we have a better chance.
Obviously you guys want to win and are working harder to win than I am, but if this special election was so doomed and unimportant (for example, if Critz was moving right and that proved we were doing well then why was it so important to win?) then why should we get involved?
But the important thing is that I am sorry if you feel insulted. I retract whatever you found insulting. I’m angry and frustrated and I will take to heart that the buyer or donater must do his own research or live with the consequences.

Lots of reasons
CowboyUp4419 (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 2:27AM EDT (link)The fact Burns faced a steep climb didn’t mean it was impossible. There was a substantial reward possibility, too. Cook rates PA-12 as R+1; if we’d pulled off a win in a district that’s nominally Republican but where twice as many Democrats voted you’d have every House Democrat in an R+anything district sprinting for the tall grass in even greater haste than they are now. The Democrats knew that, too. Us putting in a serious effort into the special election forced them to mount a serious effort to defend a seat they’re fairly likely to lose in November.
Aside from that we didn’t want to get skunked in a psuedo-dress rehersal for the real campaign. Your contribution did good, maybe not today but soon.

Burns had two races
emgbane (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 11:33AM EDT (link)While Burns did not win against Critz, he did defeat Russell and RedState endorsed Burns over Russell.
The Russell/Burns primary was close. 57/43, compared to Critz primary where he won 72 percent of the vote.
Perhaps Burns Republican support in the special election was weak because Russell supporters did not chose to vote for him.
I still like Burns chances in Novermber, because I think by then Russell supporters will come home and support Burns over Critz.
I imagine it is hard to vote in primary and special election on the same day for two different candidates.
Your support of Burns was important. He had two races to win, He only won, but you help him achieve the win.
In November he can draw from a united Republican party and independents to win so give him some more money he’ll need it.
I do think it is interesting that democratic primary had 82,695 votes, but in the special election Critiz got 71,684 votes. He lost over 11,000 votes. In the Republican primary there were 45,777, but Burns got 59,476 votes in the special election. Burns gained over 13,000 votes. Were they democrats and independents? How many? It could have been even more than 13,000 depending on how much of the 19,699 Russell votes he lost.
Critz won the election but he shed Democrats and idependents to do it. I really like Burns changes in November when Republican turn out will be higher. It’s really hard to turn out votes in a special elections. Holding one with a contested statewide democratic Primary is especially tough. Still a turnout of 45,777 is not bad.
Speaking as a Pennsylvanian
nepanyrush Wednesday, May 19th at 4:56PM EDT (link)You may have a point. As a Russell supporter, but from outside the area, I was really disappointed in the selection of Burns by the PA State Committee. I thought Russell should have gotten the nod for the special election and that the GOP should stay out of the primaries.
In other primaries, I was very distressed to see the attack literature that the PA Republican Party paid for to attack a conservative gubernatorial candidate (Sam Rohrer), who I know and admire, and the PA Republican Party to support one Republican over the honorable and conservative David Madeira (who even advertised on Red State). The PA State Committee just alienates people. It is just machine politics.
I am sure that Russell supporters were alienated by the attacks on their own candidate by the GOP and the fact that there is bad blood between Russell and the Chairman of the PA State Committee, who did not support Russell in the last election against Murtha. Maybe that bad blood will be gone by November.
But I myself am going to stop donating to the state party apparatus because my money is being used to attack my own candidates!

You answered your own questions. Why would they ask you for money if they had a clue they might lose? Because you GAVE, and that is momentum for the campaign. When you can advertise how much support you are getting via people’s wallets, you gain momentum. Without money there’s ZERO chance of winning. That’s just the way it goes.
Why did they say things were looking good if they knew (suspected) that they weren’t? Well, if Erick had posted yesterday morning saying “well, it doesn’t look good but man we tried” who in PA-12 would have bothered to go drop a vote for him? Few who saw that post, that’s for sure. Why push the positives, when he lost? With momentum and positive attitude, he came within several points of winning, and has momentum into the November elections. We’d have preferred a 100% win, but sometimes you gotta take the 50% and cheer about it.

We need positive attitudes to keep up the fight. This is a war we must win, but unfortunately we’ll lose battles along the way, and some battles we won’t bother to fight at all. It’s politics.
The primary process is FLAWED. Two states should not decide our candidate.

Burns isn't Reagan
asmith1022 Wednesday, May 19th at 1:12AM EDT (link)Burns isn’t Reagan…..and the fact that it was as close as it was in a heavily unionized dem district, on a primary day in which dems had a much greater reason to turn out and vote portends well for Nov., and by then critz will have a record to run away from. That being said, we shouldn’t grow complacent.

Is the Country Angry?
Joe Cor (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 12:31AM EDT (link)Obama’s slide in the polls seems to have stabilized at the high 40s. The Dems are making up ground in the Gallup Generic ballott. Obamacare is unpopular, but not wildly unpopular. Republicans are pretty tepid in their opposition. I hope we’re still seeing a tsunami in November, but the results tonight don’t give me a warm fuzzy. Republicans need to sharpen up their message, criticize Obama roundly instead of saying he’s a wonderful man and Nancy’s a nice lady, and start pounding the message of Repeal, so that people don’t forget about it, and keep the messaging up for 6 more months. That seems to be asking an awful lot from the Republican leadership I’ve come to know and love.

Well,
Joe Cor (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 5:46AM EDT (link)Coburn and his vanlentine to Nancy and Barak.
Why don’t we hear Repeal from Republican leaders?
Why does Mrs. Bush flatter Dems every time she opens her mouth?
Where was the denunciation of Barak’s threat to prosecute Bush administration officials for “torture?”
Why was the most vocal opposition to Barak’s abandoning of Bush Administration interrogation procedures coming out of the mouth of a retired former Vice President rather than the House/Senate minority leader?
How vocal are Republicans in their opposition to Kagen?
How vocal were Republicans in their opposition to Sotomayor?
Where’s the denunciation of Obama’s policies toward Israel, Iran?
Where’s the denunciation of Obama’s abandoning of missile defense?
When has a Republican leader opened his mouth to denounce Barak on his opposition to the Born Alive Act? How can any opposition not be considered tepid that gives him a pass on that?
I think it's a matter of perception here, Neil.
Steph C (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 8:45AM EDT (link)When the Dems had the filibuster proof majority, it was easy for the Reps to be the party of no. With Brown’s win, a lot of us are seeing them slip back into appeasement mode, such as Kyl’s statement on Kagan.
I think it remains to be seen whether the Republican leadership goes whole hog back to their usual, given the message we’re sending about November, but you can’t help people’s perceptions that is what they’re doing.

Steph C (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 1:21PM EDT (link)the facts are the Rep leadership is making appeasement noises. We have a movement going but sometimes it needs a little bolstering to keep people fighting for the right. Point out the positives that aren’t getting nearly the press of the appeasement noises.

By the end of August things will be much clearer but we have to stay in the fight to get the changes we want.

Burns v Critz 2, coming soon
Adjoran (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 2:23AM EDT (link)Let’s see how much of an “independent voice” Critz is as Obama and Pelosi attempt to ram through as many socialist tax-and-spending plans as they can while they control Congress.
A word about turnout. Statewide the Democrats turned out more voters, by 168,000 in the Governor’s race and by 227,000 in the Senate race, due mainly to the more competitive elections. But their registration advantage in PA is huge, 51% of all registered voters are registered Democrats, only 37% Republican (an advantage of over 1.1 million for the Dems), 6% unaffiliated, and the rest assorted nuts and flakes.
Yet, a doctoral study done some years ago showed that while Pennsylvania registered Dems and GOPers and “others” (they lumped the rest together for the study) voted in similar patterns as to how often they voted across party lines most years which were closely competitive, but the movement towards the Democrats by Republicans and others in Democratic years was far less than their swing the other way in Republican years. IOW, Democrats and others are more likely to support Republicans in conservative years than vice versa.
This explains why the state was traditionally a battleground state. The recent trend towards Democrats since Reagan may say more about the state’s aversion to the Bushes (who combined New England high church Episcopal elitism with down-home Texas brass, both of which play poorly in Punxsutawney) than about their likelihood of electing a given candidate.
what's the Critz strategy now?
tngal (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 4:43PM EDT (link)He ran to right of the washington group, even saying there were some things the dems pushed that he would not have voted for. Probably a lie, but that’s what PA wanted to hear. If he goes against the grain through November, even though there aren’t that many votes left, he could p/o Pelosi and her ilk. If he actually votes as the democrat he is- he could p/o the people who elected him. What’s a coal mining, jobs needing, liberal, right tilting, promise them anything, democrat to do?
Democrat Strategy proven to work

liberty131911 Wednesday, May 19th at 10:12AM EDT (link)We all have to remember that we are at the very beginning of this fight. And we have more than one enemy. We of course have to fight the Democrat party but we also have to fight the RINO’s which seems to be most, if not all, of the Republican party establishment. Let’s remember the British won all the battles early in the Revolution.
It was perserverance and I believe, God’s will, that won the war and it was our own complacency over the past 100+ years that has gotten us to this point now. We need to keep fighting and fighting and we also need to teach our children that they must also continue the fight or they will end up slaves and we will be the last generation to know what personal liberty is/was.
So let’s look at yesterday for what it was, a demonstration that we can win but that we can also lose, a demonstration that hard work and perserverance are necessary and that being on God’s side is the right place to be so that he will be on ours.

My two cents' worth
ctpsb (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 11:05AM EDT (link)I can see the_invisible_hand’s point. Not just here (ie Hannity) it seemed it was really close. Combine that with a respectable poll showing a Burns one-point lead and then lose by 8-10 points you feel misled and disappointed. However it’s understandable that with that poll you want to move every vote for Burns you can.
In the big picture this really was an unusual election as all special elections are. Conservatives are winning the vast majority of races. Brown won after Hoffman’s disappointment, etc. But…
This should serve as a reminder that we can’t just take November for granted. Much like a sports team that is better on paper but still loses because they didn’t respect their opponent. We can’t forget that the media will exploit every opportunity to boost Dems / hurt Reps. I had worried about “peaking too soon” as well. This should serve notice that we have to continue to get the message out and not just assume that the mass of voters out there see what we see.
