EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Letting the Chips Fall Where They May

“The problem is that any time you have a largely uninformed and uneducated electorate, that kind of lowest common denominator mudslinging can be effective.” — Will Folks.

We’ve been dragging on and on all week led by Will Folks on a never ending wild goose chase of the salacious in South Carolina. The media, more national press than local press, has gone along willingly on the ride.

There has to be a there there they think. Will Folks drops a bunch of phone records that prove he talked a great deal to his employer. A-ha! it is proof of something.

Maybe it happened. Maybe it didn’t. We know no more today than we did on Monday. The media should be ashamed of itself. But it’s ratings week and sweeps week all rolled into one.

With apologies to RedState readers (and Dan Riehl who is rather upset about the whole post from this morning), I’ve had no hesitation in stringing the media along like Folks has done. He wanted his fifteen minutes of fame and got a week. Now he needs to show us what he has and, if he has what he says he has, let Haley supporters make up their minds. No one needs to humor him with another week of sensational salaciousness. There are kids and a husband involved in this mess too.

I have no clue if anyone is behind Will Folks doing this. He really could feel aggrieved for some reason and just want to take out Nikki Haley. But I have a theory, I have some facts, and I’ve drawn some inferences to form my opinion. Let’s go below the fold and down the rabbit hole.

Let’s stop playing the Will Folks game of stringing everyone along and let’s just get to what I actually know and what I think. And I’ll dispense now with the third person, which is really over done.

The consultant who last year was telling people about Will Folks’ story worked or works for Andre Bauer. Bauer himself admitted this week he has known about the rumor for a year.

In 2006, Rod Shealy hired Will Folks to do something called “counter-negative consulting services” for Andre Bauer and a couple of other campaigns.

Sometime after 2006, Will Folks turned decidedly hostile toward Andre Bauer. He was very much part of the Sanford reform crowd that included Nikki Haley. Starting in June of 2009, around the time Bauer’s consultant is pushing out the Will Folks story, Folks starts to change his tune on Bauer.

About the same time last year, another blogger notes this: “Bauer seems to have cut some kind of deal with blogger Bill Folks.”

Three days before the Palin endorsement, Folks is singing the Bauer campaign’s praises. By the way, I was told though know of no public polling from that time, that internals showed Haley was already starting to track upward before Palin’s endorsement, which just sealed the deal and added momentum. Andre Bauer is pushed from second place to third place, cutting him out of a runoff.

Then you have Bauer’s own conduct. On the day the story broke, Bauer was in Greenville, SC, but then couldn’t make the Greenville Forum that night. While Gresham Barrett and Henry McMaster both spoke out against the attack on Nikki Haley, Bauer’s response? They should take a lie detector test. Oh, and as I said up top, he’s known about it for a year, but he says he did nothing with it.

Then there is Jake Knotts who allegedly hired a private investigator to dig into Will Folks and who is rumored to be responsible for the rumored picture. Knotts also helped in the Bauer Palace Coup. Note that in the same blog post at the Palmetto Scoop about Knott’s involvement to help Bauer, Adam Fogle wrote the quote, “Bauer seems to have cut some kind of deal with blogger Bill Folks.”

Andre Bauer’s campaign strategy has been to get into the runoff. Something like this sure would help if Haley started getting up in the polls.

Who knows where this story will lead. And who knows if anyone is behind it other than Will Folks. A lot of people suspect Andre Bauer has some role just given his history. That’s my opinion and I’m perfectly willing to admit it is speculation based on inference from a number of facts that haven’t really been discussed yet. Take it for what you will. Right now it is Will Folks’ dribble of evidence versus Nikki Haley’s categorical denial. Time will tell.

In my opinion, I think if you want to get back to being a player in South Carolina politics beyond being a blogger and you know can’t hitch your ride with your previous horse, you latch on to the one you might be able to help get across the finish line and earn some good will.

Now you know my opinion on the whole sordid mess and now you can make up your mind for yourself with some added information.

UPDATE: Let’s not forget this gem from the New York Times about Haley v. Bauer:

On Sunday, standing outside his family’s home on Sullivan’s Island, Mr. Sanford told The Associated Press that he had considered resigning but decided against it.

That is good news for Attorney General Henry McMaster, Congressman J. Gresham Barrett and State Representative Nikki Haley, all Republican contenders for the governorship. Last week, Ms. Haley attacked Mr. Bauer, saying in a statement she feared for the conservative reform movement should he take office.

“South Carolina cannot afford to go back to the good old boy system that so badly serves the taxpayers and undermines our government,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bauer’s camp appears to have been orchestrating pressure for a resignation.

You’ve got nothing, Folks has got very little and Haley is not dealing with it until after the election. This reminds me of high school.

  • reddogreport

Jack Bauer just got canceled, now it looks as if Andre Bauer might get the ax as well?

I guess it all comes down to the picture. Seems as Erick and Will have both been doing a little bluffing, trying to flush out the photo. So far, its being held close to the vest, even if it really does exist.

…we have a history of Folks falling in line behind Bauer, and Nikki’s refusing to dance to either Folks’ or Bauer’s tune.

But I agree: South Carolina politics are like high school. At least, its regional political blogging is.

I thought there was a legitimate scoop behind the red siren yesterday.

    Color me bummed.

quick pick your wadded up panties off the floor! This TROLL, Folks has a sickness and Erick was messing with his mind, it you cannot even get that you are going to have some serious problems with politics as a whole. It is an UGLY business however USUALLY that can be put at the feet of theDemocrats, It has come to the attention of the GRASSROOTS that the GOP has some MAJOR issues as well but the bottom line is that it would appear that in the end Democrats come out looking like “angels” and the SC GOP IS disgusting and needs to be cleaned out!

    Something just hit me here.

Larry Richter is sleazy as they come and is a perfect fit for Rod Shealy. If Larry Richter gets the reform minded conservative candidate Nikki Haley blasted, those voters, who are also Bill Connor’s, don’t show up.

Shealy, I’m sure is the guy behind it all. I’m just not sure it’s Andre Bauer that’s the big benefactor.

All that money Richter has been paying Shealy is for a reason.

that the entire way it was brought to light, true or not, was as classless as anything I have seen. But you are assuming it was done solely to keep her out of the lead and that it was done by a republican, namely the ones running. You are basing that assumption on as much evidence as there is for Nikki cheating.

The matter has been handled in a poor way, on this site also, and anyone who uses suggestions without proof to try to trash another person needs to get checked. Matters little if it is this site or another.

Quite frankly, the game playing by Folks has not hurt Nikki that bad and the game playing by this site has not helped her. But keep on pointing fingers at Andre without a lick of proof, and it may raise a ship that needs to be sunk. People tend to grow sympathetic towards those who are accused of something without proof or for people who seem to be overly attacked. Seen it with Nikki, and keep up the finger pointing, and you will see it with Andre.

  • surfjake

Sorry Eric, but in this one, very poorly played. It began as amusing, then turned into something very ugly, and demeaning.

Like my response to all who send me drivel, half truths and mere speculation focused as facts; Do not play the same game as the opposition, use truth as s a shield and you will find that you triumph more than you lose.

I cannot believe I wasted two days checking back with Red State just to have Erick say “I have no clue if anyone is behind Will Folks doing this.”

I am sorry, but you said earlier, with the siren: “Breaking: We Know Who Did It” and “We know who paid Will Folks to push this story out there.”

I got played like a sucker by Erick and I an not pleased. And from the other posters on the original post, there was a feeling that Nikki was going to be exonerated, that Erick had broke a major story that the MSM were not going to do. Is he saving this story for CNN? What till this story breaks!

I cannot believe you played us for suckers.

  • RedBeard

Let’s say, just for the sake of discussion only, that Haley did what she is accused of doing. Bad, indeed, if true.

But now let’s look at those people who want to bring her down, and the foul tactics and immoral means they are using.

    Who stinketh the most?

Anyone who has ever seen The Caine Mutiny will know exactly where I’m headed. Here is the pertinent part of the story, after Captain Queeg has been destroyed by the men in the clip:

That implies you believe Willy Folks is credible in the first place. Absent proof, contra the victim’s indignant denial, despite Folks’ reputation, and in spite of what turns out to be a credible motive and opportunity for the blogger to be other than credible.

But you’re mad at Erick for naming names, and giving out more evidence in support of it that Folks ever did.

    Well, that’s your call.

I met Nikki at the Red State Gathering last year. She looks you in the eye when she speaks to you and is a genuine and truthful person. She, coming from another woman, is very attractive, articulate and smart.

I have seen photos of this Folks person. He is not an attractive man, and I have no sense that he has a dynamic and forceful personality based on what I have I have read authored by him.

I am having a difficult time believing that someone like Nikki would even consider Folks for what he is accusing her of. There is absolutely no way. It is actually rather disgusting to think about from a woman’s perspective.

This is nothing but a complete smear campaign. I can sense it from a woman’s perspective. He is not even in her league. And he knows it.

  • rick554

she’d spend a minute with a goof ball like him . Just sayin’

  • katnandu

Maybe I missed part of this story. Why are you in the middle of this. Is Haley a friend of yours? She chose to run for office. If this is a false allegation she should be able to handle this herself. How could she Govern if she can’t stand up for herself. She could have a press conference and threaten legal action. If she did have an affair, then she lied by denying it. It would then be her responsibility to protect her family by dropping out of the race. If she did “hook up” with a dirtbag, that’s her problem!

We can all agree that Folks is a tool and should put his cards on the table for the controversy he created by bragging about something that may or may not have happened quite some time ago, but for you to play the same game to prove some point about him being the idiot that we already agree he is, is not only pointless, but insulting to your readers.

    Really nice job…..guh.

  • portlandon

I am very sorry to see Mr. Erickson flush his investigative journalism creds down the toilet over this Folks jerk.

Was it worth it Erick? You have only added fuel to the fire, and quite possibly hurt Nikki Haley in the process. You have emboldened the Folks guy now, and many conservative blogs who have been waiting for the story are disappointed with your stunt.

Not casting aspersions, but I’d really appreciate it if someone could explain to me like a fifth grader what the purpose was for Eric to post several incorrect posts claiming to have, and be ready to disclose, information he apparently does not have. I am sorry, but we are fighting a very serious battle for the future of this nation. It seems like we are on a boat going over the waterfall, and if it goes over the waterfall, it will be very hard to get back up.

Redstate has developed to where it is widely recognized and read and can play an important role in this nation’s future. It is one of the sites that I visit daily, but in this case, hourly because of the “breaking news.” From my point, of view, I am very, very disappointed, not only personally, but because to me it lessens the credibility of Redstate and erodes trust. Already quotes are floating out there about Erick (such as about Souder) that really hurt our cause, since Erick has risen to prominence.

Your response to my expression of disappointment is basically “Good bye” as if you don’t need allies unless they fall perfectly into line. Individual viewpoints are not welcome and you are saying that I am not welcome to express other than the party line.

  • nepanyrush

I have been advocating Redstate, got one political candidate to put an ad here, and been pushing Erick as a public speakers for events. But if I am not welcome to express my opinion . . .

Yesterday at 2:50 p.m. Erick Erickson said “We know who paid Will Folks”.

Today, after teaser posts, Mr. Erickson says “I have no clue if anyone is behind Will Folks doing this.”

Red State blog credibility: zero, I think you and your co-bloggers need a long sit down.

I’m returning to Henry McMaster’s camp. What a shame.

  • katnandu

I think the verdict is still out on that question. I don’t understand why Haley would say she wants to wait until after the election to deal with this. I hope it is NOT TRUE! We must have leaders who are honest, have integrity, and who are able to actually lead. I’m not seeing the leading part. She needs to get out there and defend herself if this guy is lying. Why isn’t she doing it?

  • janis

And you waited until today to post a comment. And only about this matter. You were never in Ms. Haley’s camp. If you had been, this blog wouldn’t have made the least bit of difference in your support for her.

You are a little man doing little things.

  • aesthete

I’d prefer if political games weren’t played on RS blogs.

  • janis

Wow, you know how to add quality to a blog, don’t you. As to your sig line, you got a beef with sailors?

  • Jack_Savage

…as Folks has presented that he had an affair with Haley.

Seems to me that it is up to Folks to prove he wasn’t paid to lie about Haley. This is a serious allegation, don’tcha know.

  • conservativecrusade

one who will vote for her in the primary, and it depends on who is with her in the runoff if she will get my vote. I will be more than happy to vote for come the general. That being said,

I do not know if she had an affair, tend to believe it is not true. if after all the stupidity it turns out to be true, it will not be the affair that bothers me as much as her 100% denial of it.

But, lets turn the tables a little and see if we are acting hypocritical, shall we.

Same “truth” told about Sestak which gives Burns a huge lead. Would we be just as upset how the rumor came out about him, or simply enjoy his political downfall? Or, I find out, or to make it more like this case, help Obama grow weed in the White House basement. I get pissed at him for whatever or decide I can make some money on this issue. I start dropping hints I have proof right before the 2012 election. Would everyone call me a scumbag or enjoy the spotlight on Obama? Lets make it a little more of an in party job. Same rumor, I work or support Devore, I bring up the issue weeks before the CA primary. Same question, enjoy or get angry at me? I wonder if this is such a big issue because this a site endorsed candidate, or everyone would feel the same way no matter who it was done to.

The only facts in this case are, Folks is claiming “something” happened, Haley denies it, there were conversation at all times of the day and night between the two, and there are verified texts between Haley’s guys and Folks. Past that there is nothing, nothing to prove an affair or who was behind the start of it. It should be left at that and lets move on.

I would rather everyone here talk about the records of the 4 involved in the race so that I may learn something about the guy I am supporting that would make me feel good about supporting him or make me realize I need to change my vote. I would also like to learn more about Haley as she very well may the be the one in the general. Until there is proof of the affair, most of us do not care about it.

Time to move on and not give any more credence or attention to the guy who craves it.

  • Jack_Savage

So you are in the “don’t return fire if it comes form a mosque” group, huh?

  • aesthete

With the whole ordeal. Assuming the affair as a given, did Nikki break the law? No. Were her wedding vows addressed to the people of SC? No? Then what’s the fuss all about? I’m honestly befuddled as to how this would reverse any of her positives.

As a side note, does anyone from SC know how this allegation would affect the race? From the news and blogs, it seems to me that most of Nikki’s support comes from Tea Party and libertarian-leaners. If there’s any group of Republicans who could care less about sex and politics, I have yet to find them. In what way does this affect her candidacy, if that is her base of support in the primary?

  • barbarish

    Couldn’t have said it better.

  • tryptic

I am a South Carolinian. I read RS usually x1 a day. I had been a lukewarm McMaster supporter, and not happy with him, Andre or Gresham Barrett – even though I have personally met two of them and contributed to two of their campaigns in the past. It was Erickson who made me pay attention to Haley. My wife and I were both excited about voting for her. As you may know, the primary is less than two weeks away. There was a lot of positive buzz around her down here.

Then this affair story breaks. I already had little credibility in Folks. So I was ecstatic when Erickson says he will crush Folks. I thought this information would go onto Drudge and into the SC papers. My belief was that if Folks was confronted with pay-for-play proof, he would be silenced, and Nikki would go on to win. But I said earlier today that I could not vote for Nikki if she had an affair – not out of moral superiority, but because Mark Sanford – a man I had supported for Congress and Governor – had besmirched us and left the door wide open for the Democrats to run the candidate they’ve been grooming for years, Vincent Sheheen. Any of you who think Sheheen is a lightweight doesn’t know what you’re talking about.

Now I have to evaluate the bigger race. I think Nikki is in trouble, Blood is in the water. And when her biggest blog backer fibs that he has the goods to kill the story, then maybe its time to go back to a safe candidate rather than a Mark Sanford ally who is tarred by the same brush? Hmmm? McMaster is the safe bet. Which is a shame, but that is the way it is.

Anyhow, Janis, that is where I am coming from. Save your Charles Johnson-esque jibes about not posting for someone who cares – perhaps you are the Sharmutta of this blog? Good. You just got mountebanked but are gonna stand by your man. Even Jenny Sanford has more sense than that, but I admire your small-minded attack on me for not having a right to an opinion because I haven’t wasted as much time time here as you is priceless. = Anyone who thinks Erick did the right thing in this sordid little morality play needs to take a very long look in the mirror.

I have been reading this blog for 4+ years and I think have commented once or twice. I am not normally the type of person who feels the need to jump into the fray and voice my opinion. Instead I use this blog as a valuable source of information and interesting discussions.

Guess I am a Blog Watcher.

That being said, I want to voice my extreme displeasure with the way this was handled. The problem with Politics in this country today is that serious debate gets pushed to the side for “gotcha” moments and other meaningless spectacles.

Erick, will Folks started this game, but you decided to drop down and play at his level. I had expected more from you and am sorely disappointed.

As Raven suggested, take a vacation from politics before you lose yourself. You don’t want to wake up one day and realize you are just another untrustworthy pundit in it for the soundbite. You are better than that.

  • jdp

Thanks for the explanation. I can understand it now, but I’m not sure I understand how Eric could have imagined it was a good idea. Seems pretty lame to me and a HUGE roll of the dice to put your credibility on the line like that. But that’s not my call.

  • swami7774

I’ve watched as a similar smear against my local House candidate(Jeff Perry, R-MA) was attempted recently. He shot down the non-story quickly and calmly, and then IGNORED IT. It has all but died off now.
I understand what Erick was trying but don’t think it worked, nor has it helped Haley. Just my 2 cents from the People’s Republic of MA.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

I’ve been avoiding this entire story for a couple of reasons. First is, I hate this stuff. It just brings everyone down into the gutter. Secondly, the fact that so many people on both sides were hanging on a thread waiting for the salacious details shows how much we’ve become desensitized to sensationalist journalism.

We don’t even need the National Enquirer anymore (heck, they’re actually writing real news these days), we can pretty much go anywhere, and will go anywhere for the next shocking story. The problem is, the next one has to be even more shocking than the last.

Major news agencies picked up this story that 20, even 10 years ago wouldn’t have touched it. With so many different and niche sources of information these days, you can pretty much get whatever you want. The competition is brutal, so the ethics and effort for true investigative reporting are gone.

Many of you think what Erick did was just stooping as low as Folks. Well, what’s left to do these days? I, like you, watched for eight years while George Bush tried to play the old game of not stooping to the level of his attackers, only to see him eviscerated with no response at all. The other side got what they wanted, they painted him as the worst President ever. Now, many of them would give anything to have his competence back in the White House (sucks to be them…..as they say, you get the government you deserve).

If nothing else, Erick made this idiot sweat for a couple of days. The more I thought about it, the more I wish he’d have dragged it out longer.

Those of you that are upset with Erick’s approach to this story should tale a very long look at yourselves in the mirror. If we’re ever going to change our society’s addiction to sensationalism, it has to start with ourselves. If you were hanging on the thread and waiting for the juicy details of this story, maybe you should step back and ask yourself why…

  • surfjake

how you got from telling the truth, not lying to not returning fire when it comes from a mosque is beyond me.

Seems that you have mistaken honor and truth with cowardice? Don’t know how you get there, but oh well.

the “she didn’t have an affair with him because he’s ugly” is not the line of attack I’d follow.

But the “he’s a slime ball” meme… that I’m totally with..

  • motorsteam

Janis. I read the site daily and recommend it to friends. No need to comment so far, so what.

This gambit was a disappointment and beneath RS, in my mind.

Beef with sailors? Heck no. I am one, a merchant seaman for a long time. Now a maritime lawyer, it is my favorite quote about a unique people and calling. Sailors enjoy special rights In the federal courts as ‘wards of the admiralty,’ to this day, for the reasons expressed by Justice Story.

  • SirGladiator

Im certainly disappointed to learn that there isn’t any cool news to prove that bad dude is lying about Nikki Haley. Obviously anytime there’s a ‘he said she said’ all you can do is trust your own judgement, and the facts as we know them. While I certainly agree with anyone who feels like they don’t want another sick adulterer in the SC Governor’s Mansion, I disagree strongly with treating Nikki Haley like Mark Sanford. Sanford is a man who admitted to his evil deeds, you might even say proudly. Nikki has totally denied that she did this. She doesn’t deserve to be compared to somebody like that, just because she happens to be running for the same office that guy currently holds.

I feel like that unless you honestly believe she’s guilty, it would be morally wrong to stop supporting her just because somebody makes an accusation against her. If you believe that what the guy is saying isn’t true, you have an obligation to stand by the woman who is being wronged. I don’t live in SC, I haven’t been following this thing all that closely, in fact Ive never heard anything about it at all outside of this website. We all know that the SC GOP Establishment loves to slime outsiders who dare to challenge it, so certainly I would start with the assumption that any such accusation is untrue even if I knew nothing about Nikki Haley or that blogger guy. The fact that Haley is, by all accounts, a good Christian woman who has categoricly denied these accusations tells me that based on everything we know now, we do have an obligation to stand by her, and not cave in to the forces of evil who are trying to drag her down with rumors and accusations. Let us stand for whats right, in defense of a good woman who is being unfairly attacked by someone who is upset that his guy is losing the race. Hopefully all this will sort itself out soon enough, and we can get this excellent candidate elected.

  • Darin_H

History is full of very attractive woman attached in one way or another to unattractive men.

Those men usually had a LOT of wealth, I doubt Folks has that kind of jack.

  • Darin_H

If it was a bluff to get someone to our, okay, but either way, Will Folks is a giant douche.

  • barbarish

but totally off base – at least in my case. I can’t speak for everyone – but I’ve not been wanting salacious details. I want the truth. I am in Pennsylvania and have taken a great interest in races across the country, including this one. I’ve turned to RS to get information about conservative candidates and I’ve donated to their campaigns rather than give money to the RNC. I just want the truth. I am going to be sorely disappointed if I donated money to a candidate who is a liar. I really don’t care if she had an affair – that’s between NH and her family and God. I do care if she’s a bald-faced liar.

I thought from posts the last couple of days there may be a gotcha moment where this Folks guy could be proven a fraud.

You were blowing smoke out of frustration.

I have been among those urging caution against unconditionally supporting Nikki Haley until the truth of the seemingly bogus accusations by Mr. Folks comes to light. It is true that his charges reek of stalker creepiness, and yet, there are hundreds of phone calls, some in the middle of the night until morning hours. He is making very specific accusations, and while he is not forthcoming with damning evidence, he is making up for it with apparent confidence. So far, what evidence Folks has produced seems to support his claim, even while his claim is simultaneously undercut by the lack of damning evidence.

But I must say Erick, your claim of incontrovertible evidence that Folks had been paid, and that you knew who paid him, looks every bit as creepy as what Folks has done. And so far, Folks has produce more evidence to support his claim than you have to support the one you’ve been making for the past 24 hours.

Nice job. You’ve sullied your credibility for the moment, played into the salaciousness of what is likely a false scandal, taken on the tactics of a stalker, and given the scumbag Mr. Folks new credibility by claiming to have damning evidence against him and coming up with nothing tangible.

  • http://erickbrockway.wordpress.com/ Erick Brockway

    Nikki Haley denies affair allegation

South Carolina state Rep. Nikki Haley denied an allegation by a conservative blogger that the two had engaged in an affair several years ago, insisting that the charge was aimed at derailing her rapidly-rising campaign for governor.

“I have been 100 percent faithful to my husband throughout our 13 years of marriage,” Haley said in a statement released to a local television station. “This claim against me is categorically and totally false.”

How many times does somebody have to deny an allegation?

  • http://andrightlyso.com/ civil_truth

…but other commenters might feel differently are free to express their disagreement with you on this matter. Or agree with you. That’s why we have a site site for communications – so long as conservative values and Republican interests are being served

My view: it’s really not my business to tell Erick how to operate his life. He’s chosen to approach this matter in a certain way and will deal with the consequences, positive or negative, of his choices. There are lots more pressing matters that will affect our nation far more gravely than Erick’s postings on this matter.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

Does that make his claims automatically true?

I guess you can say anything about anybody these days and some will just accept it as fact.

I’ve really grown tired of politics these past few months.

Do not shred each other whole on Pay Per View no less. Let’s hear it for SC and your imperfect process – somehow you gave us Senator Jim DeMint, and at the higher federal office level, no less. Do you know how grateful RedStaters all over the Union are to have a Senator who has consistently toed the line, & so far for the long haul? Where would we be without the political integrity of Jim DeMint (R-SC)- someone to believe in – Michele Bachman (R-MN) and Mike Pence (R-IN), (and a few others who deserve mention in the dispatches – they were fighting very lonely, thankless rearguard actions there forawhile). I only wish either of my Senators who were erstwhile known as pretty good conservatives, had been good for the good fight like your boy – but they are both down in differing stages of Rhino-itis, and the only even experimental cure out there is a really risky compound called Novemberus Ejectus, which no patient has willingly submitted to.

you said “Same ?truth? told about Sestak which gives Burns a huge lead. “.

Uuuuh, Sestak did not run against Burns. Sestak ran against Specter in primary for US Senate-D. Burns-R ran against Critz-D in the Special Election for PA-12.

Once you made this egregious error, the rest of you post is meaningless. Please try to keep up.

  • http://andrightlyso.com/ civil_truth

Most analysis I’ve seen of PA-12 attribute Critz’s victory in significant part to the relatively large Democrat turn out in this district with a major Democratic registration advantage – a turn out that is attributed to the heavily contested Sestak-Specter race on the Democratic side motivating voters (versus the non-competitive Senate primary on the Republican side). He just connected the two without filling in the blanks.

  • Jack_Savage

Erick is shining a bright light on the process and people surrounding this allegation by doing the exact same thing. The only difference was that he was not serious, and has said so. It took him a half a day to make his point, which is about the proper amount of time.

Sometimes the proper response to garbage like Folks is to fight fire with fire. Sort of like returning fire in Iraq, even if it comes from a mosque. Get it? Erick did that, and people are flipping out.

The front page of FoxNews.com tonight links to an article that states: “The conservative redstate.com blogger Erick Erickson also has been highly critical of Folks, claiming on Thursday that he has proof Folks was “paid” to claim he had an affair.”

But we all know politicians have extramarital affairs just like anyone else. Woman are just as likely to have extramarital affairs as men and so its only a matter of time before a high profile female politician is caught cheating on her husband. Its a juicy story for the media and the general public so it’ll get a lot of attention.

  • Doc Holliday

semi-bluffs are better than pure bluffs because with a semi bluff you can win with the bluff or by hitting a long shot card. This was too risky because Erick did not have the evidence he said he had (the bluff), he did not have a chance to get it (semi bluff), and if this guy is telling the truth, then it is all for naught anyway.

I guess it was a swing for the fences type thing, if it had worked somehow, it would have been an instant classic. One last critique, if you don’t have the hand, you should delay showing as long as possible, should of waited longer.

  • Doc Holliday

Repubs always are slain when they commit adultery. When we catch Dems doing it they just say “so what”.

I do think adultery is wrong and it does reflect poorly on a politician. However, this is WHY libertarian conservatives are right (on everything), we say this is why we need to reduce the power and influence of the government. Why do we want to allow government to be so powerful that personal peccadillos affect our lives? Don’t we all have enough problems?

  • JadedByPolitics

a make or break issue. The practice of NOT having control over yourself and the respect and dignity of your married partner to whom you have children with shows a lack of character that is UNBECOMING in anyone, let alone a politician who is going to be making laws that WE must live under.

  • SteveLA

    Doc

David Vitter disproves your point or not?

I have no clue what happened, but there is the old story to consider in a way. It’s not the affair, it’s the lying and the cover-up that gets politicians in the end.

  • Doc Holliday

but people do it. That is why I say we need to reduce the power and influence of government BECAUSE government is made up of a bunch of flawed people.

As per Socons, I really don’t think this is debatable. How many Repubs have gone down since the Clinton scandal over personal moral issues? Most did not quit because they wanted to, they quit because they lost their support. Many had to leave because they set themselves up to be called hypocrites.

But the left does not care if they are hypocrites are not, if they get caught, they say so what, just like Bill Clinton.

  • Doc Holliday

Bob Livingston was Speaker for what, a day? Lately we had Mark Souder. I know there have been many Repubs that lost their careers over these issues, that is all I am saying.

  • blooch

Nikki what? Will who? What happened to refried “Barry and the chick in the hotel”?

Must get further inside the baseball.

  • http://itsaboutfreedom.proboards.com IronDioPriest

I get it, believe me. I just think it was a misfire on Erick’s part; a miscalculation, and poorly thought out thing for a usually thoughtful person to do. As I’ve said elsewhere, we’re talking about the governorship of a state, not the latest tabloid sex scandal. The stakes are high, and should not be trifled with in a reactionary manner.

  • http://itsaboutfreedom.proboards.com IronDioPriest

You have inserted yourself into this story in a way that cannot turn out positively for anyone. Any point you were trying to make was undercut by the fact that you told the nation a bold-faced lie, your intentions notwithstanding. You have a large audience sir, and conservatives and conservatism are judged in part by the face of the blogosphere.

With the status that you have earned among conservatives comes a certain responsibility. You are not obligated to wield it, but you are accountable to it nonetheless.

  • barbarish

Not sure where you’re coming up with that at. all.

  • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

ALL don’t have extramarital affairs. Not even a majority have extramarital affairs. It’s just played up so much when one does that it may seem like it, especially if they’re on the conservative side. If it’s a leftie, it’s “Meh, who cares?”

However, I’d like to ask one thing of you. Should there actually be any truth (though doubtful) to the whole sordid thing, will you judge Haley by a yardstick that you would not use to measure yourself? In other words, will you judge her imperfections more harshly than your own?

Would it make her less of a conservative, less capable of being governor? Or is being human instead of some purist ideal that no man or woman will ever attain this side of heaven the yardstick by which we should all be measuring ourselves?

  • tankertodd

Knock yourself out. This is totally silly. Report back that this nonsense has actually taken hold with voters and maybe I’ll get myself (and my checkbook) excited.

you seem to believe that if a blogger supporting a candidate screws up, in your eyes, that it reflects badly on the candidate and the candidate must pay for that by losing your vote. Which is why you sound as if you were not particularly committed to Nikki Haley in the first place. If I assumed wrong in that case, then so be it. But you say yourself that it’s time to go back to the “safe candidate.” Had you believed in supporting the “right” candidate instead of the safe one, perhaps you wouldn’t have been so easily swayed by your interpretation of what Erick Erickson did in this case.

As for comparing me to Charles Johnson, you must have spent a great deal of time there to recognize what you say is the style of his jibes. I have no idea as I quit LGF some years ago, before the man lost his mind. As to someone named “Sharmutta”, you lost me. Must be someone at LGF, but apparently you would need to waste a great deal of time there to find that out. Congratulations.

I was with some of those at first was a little baffled until it clicked. Yes it may be a little too Hight schoolish.

Politics is always an ugly business and sometimes you need to roll around in the mud. I forgot who said it earlier, W tried ti play the high road and was crushed because he did not fight back. And we we got Obama out if it

I think it is in Folks court now, lets see if he plays his hand or if he is bluffing.

Ahh the silly games we play!!!!!!!

  • cabanon

I’m not sure how you could infer that from my comment. But let me be more clear. Politicians as a group have affairs just like everyone else meaning, in the same percentages. They, like us, are fallible and will make mistakes and some very serious mistakes.

I wouldn’t judge her more harshly. The media and the general public most probably would though. As for her political career, IF allegations are true, I think that is a serious matter, she would have broken her marriage vows, lied to her husband and family and then lied to the public, it displays a very deceptive hidden character. Its hard, to say the least, to then trust that she will govern and represent her constituents truthfully or honorably.

But this is all hypothetical until there is any proof of anything.

Its hard, to say the least, to then trust that she will govern and represent her constituents truthfully or honorably.

This is the point I’m getting at. Let’s say you had done all those things and you worked at a bank or some such handling large, very large sums of money. Would you be less trustworthy with that money? Or is it a separate failing?

Sometimes people fall against their own strongly held beliefs. It’s part of being human and our fall from Grace. Thomas Jefferson had a paramour for life. Benjamin Franklin was pretty much a reprobate in Europe. It didn’t stop them doing their jobs admirably.

So, why are we now killing off our best and brightest over unproven rumors?

Because that’s what the left wants us to do. Alinsky’s rules say make us live up to our own rules and destroy us through our own humanity; rules they never ever apply to themselves.

Keep it up and let the Marxists win, if you want, but I’d rather fight for the best and brightest and forgive their transgressions where possible.

Even if there is a shred of a chance of truth in the rumor, Haley is still among our best and brightest and has what it takes to govern conservatively.

  • LisaDe

After delaying showing your hand, knowing you are beat, you need not show your hand at all. Just muck the cards and keep them guessing for the rest of the game. You have a better chance at winning the next hand played!
That is what I think he should have done.

  • aesthete

in jobs that rely on even more personal accountability in the private sector all the time. Unless you’re applying the same standard to anyone in the private sector (i.e., buying only from “family men” or “Christians of character”, it would seem inconsistent. I don’t see politicians as my leaders, superiors or betters, moral or otherwise; if I did, I might have a problem with affairs, but as it stands, they are supposed to do a job for me in a system designed to maximize my liberty. They’re doing a p***-poor job at it, too, and I don’t think that we can afford to lose anyone who would curb the leviathan because of some personal failure that neither affects me nor is any of my business.

  • aesthete

An affair is something that society finds it acceptable to hide or throw under the rug; indeed, it is one of the few times that society in general expects you to lie. That isn’t a good thing in my opinion, but it’s true. Nikki hiding her affair wouldn’t reveal a “very deceptive hidden character”, it would just bring her down to what society expects of people who have committed adultery. If there was no impropriety or unethical behavior involved, I don’t see how this rumor being true would invalidate any of the major themes she’s referenced in her campaign of fiscal responsibility.

  • aesthete

Bad call. It happens, but I sure wish that it hadn’t.

  • greghalvorson

Erick, why don’t you preface your blogs with a quick explanation for outsiders. What this is about, I have no clue.

  • cabanon

It’s not simply having the affair that makes them less trustworthy, if someone falters and makes a mistake, that is human, It is the additional lies and denial used to cover it up that mistake which reveals their character.

For most people lying is a serious breach of trust and trust is the cornerstone of any relationship. Do you trust Obama? Do you trust the Democrats? Policy is not the only metric people use to judge and elect their representatives.

  • Doc Holliday

that is taking it to the logical conclusion I missed, he could have just mucked.
