EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Naming Names

Without a guilty plea for beating a woman, but with a Devil May Care attitude, RedState.com’s fearless editor, Erick Erickson, endeavoring to write about himself in the third person, though omniscient or limited is still up for grabs, will now proceed to dish out the dough and let the chips fall where they may in the whole sordid affair in South Carolina.

Only today did intrepid Erick Erickson get permission from sources to reveal a few key details about the Will Folks allegations. Though Erickson hinted, as sly editors do, that he had more information that would explain RedState’s full throated defense of Haley despite having been burned by a South Carolina politician before, Erickson was unable to delve into information he had.

Until today.

Rewind to exactly this time last year.

A campaign consultant for one of the campaigns for Governor of South Carolina began approaching groups that were viewed as likely to be influenced by Governor Mark Sanford. Why? Because South Carolina politicos knew Rep. Nikki Haley was viewed as Sanford’s choice to replace him.

This campaign consultant began informing groups that a blogger named Will Folks was peddling a story that he had a relationship with Rep. Haley.

Multiple sources in South Carolina confirm that the political consultant in question denied his campaign would be responsible when the story came out, but the consultant was also adamant that if Haley was in the lead before the primary, Folks would drop the story.

Fast forward to Monday of this week.

Many pundits, commentators, and the press were somewhat perplexed why Rep. Haley’s campaign would issue a flat out denial with no wiggle room whatsoever. Surely, some speculated to RedState’s intrepid Editor Erickson, had her campaign manager any doubt whatsoever, the campaign should have left some wiggle room in the story.

The campaign did not have to leave wiggle room. The campaign had known this was a possibility since this time last year. Knowing Folks had intentions of peddling the story explains why Rep. Haley’s campaign manager Tim Pearson handled Folks as he did in the text messages Folks dribbled out.

So who pushed Folks out? Was there money paid? Sources tell Erick Erickson that yes, despite Folks’s denial, money was paid to procure the story and guarantee it hit at the most opportune time — right before the primary.

Who did it? Well, you press people have had Will Folks string you along all week, reporting every salacious non-detail. So RedState.com’s fearless, intrepid Editor Erick Erickson is going to do exactly the same thing — at least for a couple more hours. You will have to tune in for the identity of the campaign trying to destroy Nikki Haley later today.

Oh, and to rule out any overwrought speculation, our fearless, intrepid, magnanimous, and gracious Editor Erick Erickson would like to inform you that you can stop with the “was it a Democrat” speculation. It was not a Democrat.

Erick is indeed the man, as he provides us not only very useful and timely information, but does so in an extremely entertaining fashion. Its a bird! Its a plane! Its….Super Erick! Definitely looking forward to the next Chapter in this exciting series!

Erick, if you have information about this story, please come forward. In my opinion, your teasers are only adding to a spectacle that is already salacious enough. We’re talking about a state governorship here, not Paris Hilton.

  • tngal

You seem to have that “pinky at the lip” bwa- ha-ha thing going on this morning. New coffee beans perhaps? Your having waaay too much fun.

  • michiganwolverine

Why would Haley wait until the debate to talk about this issue? Why not address it now and get it over with far before the debate?

My guess is that Haley wanted to nail the guy in front of a live audience at the debate. She could explain her story, turn to the guy who started it all, and ask him why he did it. I am sure the moderator would give each one extra minutes for this eye popping confrontation.

So I think it is one of her GOP Rivals and she wants him to go down in flames in a live debate.

  • rrreaganite

Love the research and the writing. But the third person, ehhh not so much.

Great work though! Whoever this person is, will never be able to work on another campaign again.

Has handled this well…It will only help her in the polls. I am more convinced than ever that she is going to win.

to be like Will Folks. He’s trying to be like Andrew Brietbart. (And doing a rather good job.) The way those ACORN videos were released last fall, like Chinese water torture, was pure genius.

I hope Will Folks is wearing his Depends today.

  • dave2131

    Out with the story man!

    I can’t take this @$!# any longer!!

  • janis

The same loving woman who we all trusted is the same one who tempted us to the supper table one night, promising a delightfully prepared repast of tender pot roast. Which, quite frankly, didn’t smell all that great, but we trusted her, so we sat down and dug in.

The wretched woman had fixed us liver. You, sir, just served us virtual liver. I WANT MY POT ROAST! ;-)

  • sunnyblack

Note the difference between brilliant showmanship (Erickson) and abject boredom (Folks).

If you’re going to string people along, your audience must be moderately convinced that you have something good. Something worth the time investment.

  • AngryMatt

The writing style, if you can call it that, is pure Folks. And I have to agree with IronDioPriest. Emulating Folks, even to mock him, is the exact wrong thing to do. Erick, you’re a CNN contributor and the head of the largest community oriented conservative blog in the country. There’s no reason to act like this joker.

In fact, I think doing the exact opposite and laying the full smackdown on him, if it exists, would have been perfect, especially if you did it on the air and the Net at the same time.

This is about the governorship of South Carolina and a family’s life. If it was YOU running for office or if the rumor was about YOU, then fine, play it however you like. But unless the Haley campaign told you to play it like this, you should have honestly just brought whatever you had to the table all at once and actually “let the chips fall where they may.”

Unless, of course, you have nothing and are basically doing exactly what Folks is doing in an attempt to undermine and mock him in which case that’s fine.

  • AngryMatt

Andrew led with at least some tangible details before letting the full story out over a series of a few days. Folks led with a ridiculous “confession” and then some details that were at best tangential to the whole situation. Brietbart would have pumped out a video that showed something or at least tossed out a few teaser quotes.

  • tryptic

Breitbart controlled the entire story, top to bottom. This is totally different. This is not the time to emulate Breitbart. This is the time to dish the story. Fast.

If this isn’t on Drudge within an hour, then it may not be picked up for the nightly news casts and perhaps miss tomorrow’s three big S.C. papers … the State (Columbia), the News (Greenville) and the Post and Courier (Charleston).

There is a very fiinite window on a Friday news release, doubly-fine on the Friday before a Memorial Day.

    Well played, EE!

I see you are aware of his many accomplishments, well how do you think he got to where he is?

Erick knows what he is doing.

    Stay tuned.

  • JadedByPolitics

Nikki that she is NOT a liar in the mold of a Mark Sanford and that TROLL of man is doing to her what was done to Sarah Palin and believe you me the Enquirer and the Globe which are OWNED by old Clintonites really tried to peddle that Sarah had an affair which she has consistantly DENIED!

I do believe the difference between male and female politicians would be the same as in real life which is that it is RARE for a woman to have an affair even in 2010 AND a beautiful, successful woman like Nikki IMO would NEVER GIVE THAT DISGUSTING, PATHETIC TROLL of a “man” the time of day other then sympathy.

  • lakecrazy

but it will miss the local Weather Report, I mean the local News

  • smitch61

This statement alone tells us all we need to know regarding politics, and why it is time ( and overdue), that we begin to elect individuals that reflect our values, have a morale compass, and relate to the American people instead of the elitists on both ends of the spectrum. If you ask me directly after 27 years of marriage to the same man if I have had and affair, the answer is NO.. There is no wiggle room. The answer is NO. I have so had enough of the games people play. So out this person and out him or her real good.

She’s expecting filet mignon — served by footmen, of course.

She even loves the drip, drip, drip on this story. She’s staying tuned.

  • AngryMatt

Though of course his record SC politics isn’t stellar given his initial support of Sanford after the “AT story” was put out there. I trust Erick in terms of the candidates he’s supports and even on his quasi-skepticism of some Palinistas. I also trust him when it comes to running a business since he’s done a fantastic job on RS. It’s come a long way since I first registered, though I concede I don’t post a lot.

My concern is voiced in tryptic’s post. Erick doesn’t control this story and it’s not about him, so I think he has a responsibility to not play games like the other side has. Every minute this hangs out there without Folks getting shredded is another minute where Haley’s reputation is tarnished by these allegations.

I do trust him to bring the goods and vehemently defend his and RS’s picks. I’m just concerned about this tactic.

  • Locked and Loaded

Could Erick be trying to give this person a chance to come clean on his own?

  • Locked and Loaded

Could Erick be trying to give this person a chance to come clean on his own?

  • zollistar

    Yum, yum.

Alas, my mother didn’t know about that option. I was a grown-up, living in Italy, when I was introduced to the delicacy.

Of COURSE, the Italians would have known what to do with liver.

  • http://www.pantanoforcongress.com Redhead_Infidel

I’ve seen the wear and tear false allegations have on a candidate – it’s even worse for their innocent family. I don’t know what there is to gain to let this situation reach the absurd and then continue to drag out. An hour in these kinds of high-pressure situations seems like a lifetime for the ones suffering the lies.

All I’m saying is that while it may seem like a political game to outsiders, there is a family at the center of all this. My heart goes out to them, and I sincerely hope that Erick is their knight in shining armor, come to save the day. I sincerely hope that he’s in it for the sport of it, but that is what it seems like with all the games. Perhaps I’m being cynical about Erick’s motives, but I do know that juvenile silliness never engenders respect OR confidence.

  • http://www.pantanoforcongress.com Redhead_Infidel

I sincerely hope that he’s *NOT* in it for the sport of it…

  • JoeG

I hope Eric doesn’t mind me assuming to know his goal, but I’m pretty sure I do.

The goal isn’t to gain personally by getting the “scoop” and beating other reporters. His goal is to put Nikki Haley in the governor’s seat.

If another reporter beats him, so be it. What is happening now is that the people responsible for this are going to be sweating big time and hopefully they come up with some lame excuses that are swatted down as more is dribbled out.

In the end Redstate will still be a key source of information since this is a R on R story.

They could always try to preempt you outing them. by coming forward. Or they could compound the error of their ways and continue to deny their involvement.

  • duke90

If you have something, you should publish it. If it can clear the issue, it is the right thing to do for the sake of both the Haley family and the voters of South Carolina.

This sort of grandstanding is likely to be cited the next time a traditional media type wants to deride blogs as illegitimate, and for once, they would have a point.

  • Aaron Gardner

I see what you are saying, and it’s a reasonable position.

I will just say, when Erick is done … Folks will be decimated and Nikki will be vindicated.

Then watch her bounce in the polls.

    Or not. ;)

Soap opera, which I postulate is his favorite form of entertainment. He deserves to be drawn and quartered at the slowest possible pace consistent with restoring Nikki Haley’s reputation at the earliest possible moment.

To paraphrase Brick Top, from the movie Snatch “Punish ‘im Erick”

  • Achance

takes two to tango as well as do certain other things, and it ain’t like the nasty trollish men are all having their affairs with just that one bad girl. I spent most of my career surrounded by women who would try to trip you and beat you to the ground if they thought there was something in it for them. They may all be paragons of virtue where you are, but a goodly percentage of the women I knew in government thought that the horizontal career move was the surest path to power and success, and believe it or not, some of them did it just because they could and they liked it.

As I said yesterday, somebody who has considerable influence or credibility with the media is pushing this story with Haley or it would never have been picked up. The universal rule in political circles is that the only sin is getting caught and there is no evidence of Haley being caught, so I don’t actually believe this rumor but, that said, she wouldn’t be the first person who woke up thinking, “what was I thinking?”

  • joayn

(or probability) that Erick’s already been in contact with Nikki.

I trust Erick one gazillion percent. And if you’ve been around the blogosphere yesterday after his initial post, EVERYONE is talking about it with links to RedState.

    Hee-hee, I love it.

  • Jack_Savage

In order to illustrate absurdity. The tactic is exactly what is called for, and Folks should be mocked until the day he dies. Unless a woman does it, in which case her physical well-being will be in danger.

    Relax.

  • Jack_Savage

    As ridiculous.

Folks and the fawning press, as well as all the Republicans involved, should be mocked and humiliated and left to twist as much as Eirck can let them twist. Haley has nothing to hide, nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to do with this story.

  • rrreaganite

I don’t know why it would matter even if it were true. What someone does in their private life, is their private business. I don’t believe that it is true, but so what if it was.

they haven’t gotten caught yet. I could tell you stories from my dating life about those ‘virtuous’ women that throw themselves very blatantly at you on the first date, and then retreat to the ‘I am a pure female and you are a worthless piece of garbage (garbage being a euphemism)’ when you let them know that you don’t believe in physical intimacy before marriage.

I personally think that this is a purely political stunt, BTW, and the guy in this case is a pawn, but I think that women, in general, have a free pass in society when it comes to illicit affairs (see teachers and students)

  • Christine (Trelaina)

Maybe I’m being strung along as well today, but I’m starting to wonder if this isn’t someone pretty high up in the GOP organization….and that’s why the teasers. I hope I’m wrong….

  • joayn

I disagree with Erick’s opinion sometimes, but I have never doubted his integrity.

Don’t assume he has not been in contact with Nikki on this. Erick does have a lot of clout, ya know.

I’m sure one of the reasons Erick’s doing it this way is to make the guilty parties involved sweat it out.

And they deserve it. Oh, boy, do they deserve it.

  • janis

She tried the same thing with mashed turnips, which were the approximate color of mashed sweet potatoes. That’s what she told us they were, too, sweet potatoes.

Having memories of the liver debacle seared….SEARED…. into my memory, I gave the mashed stuff a sniff and then politely declined. My excuse was that there were no marshmallows melted on top as would be proper with sweet potatoes. She put a dollop of the stuff on my plate anyway and, since we all HAD to eat our veggies before leaving the table, I spent a long evening just staring at that lump of stuff.

Was it any wonder that I thought she was just making it up when she finally told me where babies came from?

  • http://www.redstate.com/tnjim TNJim

I asked TNJim if Erickson as being a little too over the top and TNJim told me “Not at all. This is a classic tactic employed by Rush Limbaugh that leaves the left screaming. Illustrating absurdity by being absurd really draws out how apoplectic the left can get when they feel they’re being made fun of.” TNJim added that groups like Media Matters and MoveOn.org sometimes try to turn this tactic around on the conservative and try to say that is what he really meant, but who gives them an ounce of cradibility anyway. I found myself agreeing with TNJim and after a high 5 agreed that Erickson’s style this morning does have flair.

TNJim and I both agree that anything that makes the left’s heads explode is a good thing. Kudos to Erick Erickson.

  • fpete13527

Keep doing exactly what you are doing Erick. Great job!!

Something tells me that this will not only empower and totally vindicate Nikki even more but also expose a true phony and true detriment to both SC and the country.

Something also tells me that the phony is a HIGH LEVEL RINO that the GOP still doesnt seem to understand needs to become extinct…YESTERDAY!!

  • C. Marie

  • http://itsaboutfreedom.proboards.com IronDioPriest

The allegations may be complete fabrications, but the allegations are serious, and threatening to a very important campaign for a crucial governorship. Mr. Folks may be treating the situation like a childish game, but we’re not talking about children or games, we’re talking about the governorship of a state.

I don’t see the value in Erick playing this on Folk’s level. What the situation needs is facts, truth, and for the childishness of Folks to be countered with the seriousness the allegations merit. He is ***king with the governorship of a state. If he is lying, he needs to be exposed with all expediency and seriousness that the allegations merit. If Erick knows Folks is lying – which it seems he does – then Erick is currently withholding the truth from the voters of SC.

Regardless of his obviously nobler intent, Erick is now playing along in a childish game with the governorship of a state.

  • http://www.columbiateaparty.org conservativensc

    That’s awesome. Go Nikki Go!

  • rabidcaveman

As many people know, putting the knife in slowly, is a much more effective tool, than putting it in all at once. I’ve been reading this blog, for about a year now, and this one is the funniest, and most poignant, I’ve seen here. Thank you, Erick, and thank you Redstate, for keeping me from losing faith in this most beautiful country of ours!!

  • CowboyUp4419

If you’ve got proof Flokes is on the take and that his allegations are false then the sooner you get it out there the more chance Haley has to tell as many people as possible what was done. All this dramatic garbage is bringing back bad memories from junior high and is really killing my interest in this race and this candidate.

Anyway all we have so far is a lot of “Yes, it happened.” and “No, it didn’t.” If what Folks says is true it doesn’t matter if Soros himself is funding the message any more than it would have mattered if Karl Rove had been channeling money to Monica Lewinsky back in the late 90′s.

  • http://www.pantanoforcongress.com Redhead_Infidel

And now that we know Erick has nothing, what good did all this silliness do?

  • Achance

in physical intimacy before marriage, but I’ve sure experienced enough of the “blatant throw.” Funny, now that I’m just an old retired guy rather than a dashing, handsome, and powerful political appointee, it just doesn’t seem to happen any more.

Funny thing about this is unless it is something about SC, it is just wierd. I’ve lived and worked in GA, AK, and DC and I’ve spent some time in most of the major cities in the Country so I think I kinda know how things work around the Country. Now, most guys in politics can’t resist at least telling some of their buddies about the new notch on the bedpost, but I have never, never, ever known of a guy anywhere, married or not, elected or appointed or not, to tell the media – not ever, not anywhere.

  • Jack_Savage

Dear God, I thought we had gotten past that one? Fake But Accurate? Really?

  • http://itsaboutfreedom.proboards.com IronDioPriest

I didn’t say the story was accurate, and please don’t put words in my mouth. I said the allegations are serious. As in, an attempt is being made to derail a potential governorship, and it needs to be taken seriously.

Surely you understand the difference between what I said and how you tried to mischaracterize what I said?

  • Jack_Savage

For the AP to respond to my very serious allegations about Sestak. After all, it is an attempt to derail a potential Senate seat.

Can you think about what you said for a minute and try to understand the point?
