Did a Candidate for the U.S. Senate Use Your Tax Dollars to Help a Mexican Drug Trafficker?

By now it’s a well known and established fact that Utah Senate candidate Tim Bridgewater isn’t exactly the traditional small business man that he wants Utah voters to believe; rather, he’s a lobbyist who specializes in getting taxpayer money for his own and for his clients’ businesses – including overseas businesses like Indonesia Power.

But did Tim Bridgewater stoop so low as to secure a $3 million taxpayer-funded loan to an alleged Mexican drug trafficker in 2004?

Here are the facts. You decide.

As Chairman of the Board of Interlink Capital Strategies, Tim Bridgewater did in fact secure a $3 million OPIC government loan for a subsidiary of Canelos, Inc. The loan was to be used to buy land to build low-income Mexican housing.

Now I know some of you are probably asking yourself, “Why the @#^&%! is the government lending taxpayer money to build housing in Mexico?” Calm down and take a deep breath, because it gets worse!

The Chairman of Canelos Inc. is Alejandro Canelos. The federal government is deeply worried that Mr. Canelos may be involved in drug trafficking, potentially using his for profit corporation’s sources of revenue to participate in drug trafficking. Consequently, Canelos has repeatedly been denied visas to the United States.

I know what you’re thinking again, “Regardless of whether or not this Canelos guy was or was not involved in drug trafficking, shouldn’t there be a law that prohibits the U.S. government from lending taxpayer money to a business owned by a foreigner who isn’t allowed in the country?”

But wait, there’s more. As far as I can tell, there’s no evidence the money was ever used to buy land or build low-income housing. None. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

And finally, here’s the real dilemma for Tim Bridgewater: After having made a career out of distributing taxpayer money out of the country, on what moral ground is Tim Bridgewater going to stand when Utah taxpayers need an advocate in the Senate to denounce foreign aid and corporate welfare? The answer is none.

He gave up that ground with every taxpayer loan he secured for his clients. And if he tries, the Democrats in the Senate will surely call him out for it.

By the way, if somebody can find proof that the loan was actually used to buy land and build low-income Mexican housing, please take a picture and send it to me – it might just replace that hole in my pocket with a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart.

But what would really make feel good is if you would give to Bridgewater’s opponent, Mike Lee, a true conservative who believes in smaller, limited government and who has never been in the business of big government or funding possibly mythical houses in Mexico for suspected drug traffickers.

I am BEGGING the people of Utah PLEASE do not send this man to Washington. I am so sick of these lobbyists working to secure OUR TAX DOLLARS for their job and then running to CONTROL THOSE TAX DOLLARS for new lobbyists.

That stupid. Thanks for putting the info out so Utah can back the best canid. The artical really pi$$ed me off for the fact that how many others in both houses and both partys are that corrupt? How many millions and billions could be saved. Now the mouth want 50 billion more. I say NO MORE, NO MORE, NO MORE, NO MORE and in November it will be done

The crimes committed by governmental officials are overwhelming. Knowing that their time is coming to an end must be promoting even more crime.

Out of anarchy, our new leader will rise.

Bridgewater went on the Bob Lonsberry show last week and bragged about getting govt. grants for his clients. After he finished his long explanation, Bob tried to get him to clarify his statement on getting govt. grants for his clients, and Tim did not sound apologetic at all. Doesn’t he realize that we are 13+T in the hole? I know that don’t make up very much govt. spending, but it is still spending. And he would be more likely to push for more spending, as long as it benefits his home state, just like all the other senators out there.

This is very interesting. Have you been able to get Tim Bridgewater to comment on this article or has he just ignored it? There are many troubling things about Tim Bridgewater and they are building by the day. Thanks for the article Erick.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a strong Mike Lee supporter and am working hard to get him elected. In fact, as a tea party leader in my county, I’ve just attached my name to a Utah Tea Party Endorsement of Mike Lee in a press release that went out this morning.

  • utah_cares

I don’t know who Alejandro Canelos is. I think it is interesting you are quoting a 1997 article that states that Alejandro Canelos might be in to drugs.

I don’t know if he is or not.

A scan of the last 13 years of articles on the web doesn’t show it, and there is no reason to believe Bridgewater had anything to do with helping someone doing that.

How desperate will people backing Mike Lee go to see that he is elected?

Are we going to fund a marshmallow plantation in the Andes?
Are we going to run out of money before we run out of patience?
It seems to me that we have taxation without representation.
We fought a war over that once.
    Can you say revolution?

Is this the only race you are interested in or are you a serious Republican/Conservative activist? I ask because you’ve been here 24 days and have posted only in support of Bridgewater. Never mind I think I just answered my own question…..

We need a great, principled leader like Mike Lee in Washington D.C.

Mike Lee is the only candidate in this race who has NEVER profited from federal earmarks and stimulus funds, never gambled taxpayer money on risky foreign ventures (for his own profit), and never supported (and profited from) non-conservative legislation such as No Child Left Behind as well as Medicare Part D (which created another $17 trillion of unfunded liabilities.)

Mike is a true life long conservative. He is like so many of us who got tired of complaining about what is happening in Washington D.C. and decided to do something about it. He is sacrificing so much to try and do his part to fix our countries problems, not further his own business career.

Support Mike Lee on June 22nd.

TV political ad, and more than a tad on the “smear” side. I am a long time conservative voter, who has endured many years of “let’s dig up some dirt on this guy and then use it to pressure him to give up so our guy can win, or convince the voters not to vote for him.” Sounds like Obama Chi town politics.

If there is hard evidence against this guy, fine. Publish it and let the voters decide. I believe in telling the truth even if it hurts; both sides of the aisle, please. The result of not doing so leads to mistrust, cynicism, and, ultimately, anarchy. Remember the Brasilian presidential election of 30+ years ago when the voters overwhelmingly voted a yellow dog into office?

One of the candidates for governor in Florida, a businessman, is the former CEO of an interstate hospital system which committed one of the largest Medicare billing frauds in history. He wasn’t campaigning from prison. There will be many people who will vote for him. Not me.

I have found many disturbing facts about Tim Bridge water over the last few months, like this one. I initially liked what Bridgewater said, but it did not take long to see that his sweet talking words are totally hollow. I researched both candidates personally. I read public financial records, lobbying records, and made phone calls to Washington. I quickly found out that Bridgewater is politics as usual, and does not do what he says. In my investigating of Mike Lee I found everything he has said to be true. I really hope the people of Utah do not fall for his campaign “slogans” that do not represent him at all. Don’t be duped by Tim Bridgewater!

when Mike Lee was voted on to be one of the senate canidates, on the radio someone called in and said he never paid back his student loans. Maybe he needs to be looked in on. As far as I am concerned he is just another lawyer. Do we need another lawyer? I am not sure he is good either.

Read the links! There is no connection to Canelos and drug charges. After reading the Phoenix Times article below, looks like this RedState article is a thinly based conspiracy. The closest this article comes to proving Canelos is a drug trafficker is the fact he has 300 trucks to transport produce his company grows and that they “could” be used to transport drugs. The other charges in the RedState article are also thinly based conspiracies. I don’t like the fact that money is headed to another country to build homes, but the entire article is a big stretch and more than a little contrived.

I’m calling this claim, BS! The article was from 1997 and no other results came up to link Canelos with drug charges in the last 13 years. We should all be above this and trust vetted, information. Check the sources and do some quick research before you reply to chain letters, post something from someone else, etc… To be a principled source of information we have to find out something is true before you pass it off to everyone else as gospel.

I’ve included some links and comments from a thread on facebook. If someone is going to try to make Tim look bad, they should have something better than a 1997 article that didn’t have any evidence then or since.

no hard evidence of actual drugs being found in his plane:

I do have a problem with federal funds from American taxpayers to make home loans for Mexican citzens in Mexico. The Federal Government should not be in the business of making loans unless it is strictly limited to the responsibilities of the Government outlined in the U.S Constitution. Did Tim Bridgewater actually have anything to do with this business loan?

If you are trying to smear Tim Bridgewater, so Mike Lee can win, I’d say take a good hard look at both candidates rather than the one you don’t like. Why would Lee leave a job where he made 600,000 in the first 15 months of working at his most recent employer?. Both candidates have big potential Conflicts of Interest. I have not found any evidence either has taken unfair advantage of those interests. I hope if either of them win they will be good Senators. I have my own feelings about both and I try to stick to solid evidence, rather than insinuations, falsehoods and conspiracy theories. If you have something against a candidate please provide solid evidence to support your position.

A few years ago, one of Tim’s partners got some funding to a respected son of a former Arizona Governor, who used the funding to help create some housing in Mexico, which was assumed by some to be an attempt to decrease influx of homeless in to the US, and the individual involved in Mexico was rumored 13 years ago to be involved with drugs, though no record of any more recent rumors have been found.

I don’t know anyone would take the above facts and try to twist it into being a reason to vote for Mike Lee.

  • mbecker908

We will be truly blessed when the UT primary is over. We’ll have a candidate to replace Bob Bennett and we won’t have to put up with inane posts from you Bennett/Bridgewater fools who will have time to go back to their first love, internet porn.

This is one of those times when I hate the posting rules, but frankly you jerks really suck.
