EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Freedom and the Fight.

It was 1:25 a.m. on November 5, 2008. The Republicans had just lost badly. Barack Obama had given his victory speech. Jesse Jackson had cried. And I was tired.

I sat down at my computer and wrote this post entitled “The After. The Before. The Future, Present, and Past.” The subtitle was “The Day After and the Day After That, We’ll Fight On.”

I was tired that night. I am tired still.

For every kind email I get, I get dozens of emails filled with hate and invective. And that’s from our own side. I was attacked for supporting Nikki Haley. RedState was attacked.

I was called crazy for beating up Bob Bennett and declaring it necessary for conservatives to replace him with Mike Lee. Republican politicos whispered to reporters about how detached I and RedState had become. They called me and you too “fringe.”

Republicans could not believe that I would expend so much energy rallying people to defeat the allegedly conservative Robert Bennett of Utah and then, horror of horrors, go all in to support Mike Lee.

This morning, as you wake up, know this: Nikki Haley is the Republican nominee for Governor of South Carolina. Tim Scott and Jeff Duncan are both Republican nominees for congress in South Carolina — they are solid conservatives.

And Mike Lee? He’ll be the next Senator from Utah. All were backed by RedState.

I am tired. I have not had a vacation in God knows win. But today, we at RedState, though we may be tired, wake up winners. We remember our losses, like with Chuck DeVore and Marlin Stutzman for the Senate, but we savor our wins. And we just won big.

So here again is my advice and my caution — the same I delivered that night a year and a half ago when things looked so bad. I have not changed a word:

Many of you have been with us on the front lines slogging it out for months on end, never resting and never yielding. You need to go to the back, rest, and recover. In the army the field hospital is well off the front, but not out of the sound of fire. When troops are pulled from the front, they need to rest and recover, but not be so far removed that they mentally extricate themselves from the fight all together.

The same is true for us. You may not want to post diaries for a while. You may not want to engage in the comments. You may be feeling raw and just don’t want to deal with it. So don’t. Rest and recover. But stop by the site and read. Stay engaged on email. Don’t withdraw completely, despite your inclination to do so. At some point again you will be needed. We will need you. And you will again, though you may not think so today, you will again want to fight.

Take today and rest. Enjoy your friends and family.

I hope our contributors take a day too to rest. Work through and away from the burn out. Get your mind right again. The front now changes. The fight is now different. Things will change of necessity.

But RedState remains on the front lines. We will still be here tomorrow. We continue to fight. We aim to win. In the coming weeks we’ll deploy new tools, new weapons, and new contributors in this new fight. It is going to be damn fun. That I promise.

So take today and rest. I can’t blame you. In the mean time I will stand watch on the front. I will fight the fight while you re-energize. I’ll still be here when you come back. And when you do come back, you can stand on either hand and continue to keep this bridge with me. I’ll rest when I’m dead. At RedState, we fight on.

Now let me add to these words two more: Thank you.

You guys have had my back. You’ve fought for me and with me and defended me and kept me in line all the same. Sometimes you doubt me. Sometimes you think I’ve gone off the deep end. But I know you guys have my back. Today we celebrate. Tomorrow we keep fighting for freedom.

Give yourself an “attaboy”, for you too, deserve credit for fighting on despite the negative attacks you have had to endure.
As Churchill said, “Never give in, never give in, never, ever…etc.”

What you’ve got is stamina in spades! And that’s what separates the men from the boys (and I include myself in the latter although I’m an old lady!) A kindly firend who never tells me to shut up finally explained that she doesn’t show my fire because she becomes so anxious at all the mounting horror of BO and Co. that she often has to withdraw from the fray. Even so, I’m quite sure she’s going to be voting our way!
As for DeVore, please don’t despair. I suspect Carley has a much better chance of beating Boxer – first things first, right? And then we”ll keep her feet to the fire, if necessary.
Just trying to give you a little energy feedback here . . .
    Cheers from centralvalleyteaparty CA

I don’t know how you do it. We’re all called to serve in different ways, I reckon. Here’s a little ditty that always straightens my spine:

I am but one, but I am one.
I can’t do everything, but I can do something.
What I can do, I ought to do.
Lord, what would you have me do?

Thank you again for all your hard work, & God bless you.

To quote John Paul Jones: “I have not yet begun to fight!”

Not too many people know what happen in FL-05 or the awesome Jason Sager (link below) and the primary isn’t until August 24th. So there is no rest for me or anyone in Florida for a little bit.

  • JadedByPolitics

Do not tell me that the mood of the Country hasn’t changed since November 2008. Do not tell me that this FIGHT is not about Democrats and RINO’s, do not tell me that American’s would just sit back and allow their Country to become some Socialist MECCA because I am here to tell YOU that 2010-2012 is an AWAKENING that will pull this Country right on back to the Center RIGHT Country that WE ALL KNOW it is!

The HATE from OUR side is as nasty as the left but the sweet, sweet smell of Conservatism blunts it greatly :)

  • Brian_Roastbeef

    And Congratulations.
    And Thank you.

The victories last night show a lot of hope for the future of the Republican party and specifically the Conservative movement within the Republican Party. I am particularly pleased with Mike Lee’s victory. I wasn’t sure that he would be able to pull it out, but he did. A solid conservative has undone an entrenched incumbent and his insider clone in no small part thanks to your leadership and the work of many others here on RedState.

Lot of work to go, but indeed enjoy this moment of victory.

Congrats on remaining committed to backing true conservatives!

No rest for us, but we don’t need it. Down here in NC-13 we just got a shot in the arm. Bill Randall beat out an established politician, with very little funds. What did he have? Tea Party Patriots.

    We are motivated and hungry.

There is much work to do, As you say, take the day, take some time to get your mind back right – it is a necessity. Then get back into it. We need you to continue. Take a look at Rocky Raczkowski in Michigan 9th (Congressional Race – primary 8/3). He is battling a Rino – could use your help on that one. Karma. . . or something. Enjoy the warmth of victory – then boots on the ground.

RedState has been the conservative voice of reason among so many pretenders. I am constantly on Twitter recommending that real conservatives come here to get the straight scoop.

Keep up the great work it is much appreciated.

  • JimmyGee

….and you have quite the pair of stones! What the “establishment” Republicans do not get is that because of the last 10 years, and now the total Obama Blitzkrieg…the game has changed and will NEVER be the same! Those of us who saw this change know in our soul that it is no longer enough to support a candidate just because they have a “R” after their name. We can no longer afford RINOs. We also know that change in the republican party must occur from inside the party.
We also have known that Reagan Conservatism is not dead, and will never die; Conservatism trumps the party, and the Republican party better quickly learn that lesson.
Lastly, you have known, and have been the beacon for one great truth…there is always HOPE! I live in the paradoxical socialist state called Wisconsin. When Tommy Thompson refused to run against Feingold, many of us here in Wisconsin thought Feingold would coast to another brain-dead easy win. But Tommy’s withdraw from the Wisconsin Senate race opened the field up to even better possibilities….Ron Johnson. I guaran-frickin-tee you Feingold goes to sleep each night with nightmares,,,and an internal debate about a taking-the-money-and-run retirement.
Erick, I don’t mean to be over the top sappy, but God Bless You and Red State!

” we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”

  • Christine (Trelaina)

Even though we sometimes disagree we are in this for the same goals and when push comes to shove we unite. Conservatives and the Tea Party movement scored a huge win yesterday. It’s not a downhill slide to November. We will have to work hard….but you can’t deny the momentum.

Erick, thank you for being on the front lines. You may not be planning any major resting, but I hope you will take some time to re-energize. We NEED you and everyone who is on the front lines to get our message out there – and that’s much harder work for a conservative.

My prediction – It’s going to get UGLY by November. Really ugly. The liberals will face true desperation, watching their standard playbooks fall flat and safe seats waver towards conservative wins. They will at some point pull out all the stops. To some extent conservatives WILL have to play the game, push back, use their tactics. Some on the right will not be able to handle it and will step away. That will be shouted from the rooftops by the media as a sign that we are falling apart.

We have to be ready for all this. This is the next battle.

  • wolfgang

You have to win with your chosen candidates this November, but that in itself will still not be the end, since the biggest task of all is ridding the United States of the Alien currently residing in the WhiteHouse. That Charlatan, that Avowed Communist must be removed from office in 2012 before he can complete his intentional destruction of our beloved country. You have at least thirty months to go yet, Sonny. Good Luck!

It must feel good to make a positive difference, because I know it feels good for me to be a tiny tiny part of it.

Take some time off now, Take a little vacation, relax, recharge, and take a load off.

  • http://www.hopeychangemas.com VizBiz

Desparatation will make them uglier (if that’s possible)

Keep in mind, the more dirt that was slung at Haley, the higher her numbers went. I think the Statist will try anything and I think it will blow up in their face.

  • Dan Perrin

Living to fight another day is much more important than the strategic loss of a veteran activist to burn-out, which can take someone out of te fight permanently.

And, nice work on the victories.

Now their is one other guy who needs our help, Rick Barber, AL-02.

  • http://www.reddogreport.com reddogreport

and then get back to work. There are several more important primaries to win and November is just around the corner.

  • Gmac

    Yesssssss and thank you.

  • cbondi

THANK YOU! for being the standard bearer for all of us, and giving direction.

  • cari

It’s so nice to see you posting again. I hope that, after the healthcare fight, you’re rested and ready to lead the charge for repeal. I, for one, will be fighting alongside whoever takes the lead, he just hasn’t emerged yet, it seems. Will it be you? I hope so!

Another person needs our help- a David vs. Goliath fight in Dallas. A rock-solid conservative, Pastor Stephen Broden is taking on the entrenched, liberal Eddie Bernice Johnson in US CD 30. Everyone is saying she can’t be beat- it’s a lost cause. But 500 people packed the Lakewood Theatre last Tuesday for his campaign kick off and it was electric! Please check him out:

All, I think we are all tired…..but the fight has to continue. We cannot rest too much, because they aren’t going to. We have to keep going, to fight the good fight, and do all we can to protect our great country from these despots on the left…..

    Congratulations, one and all.

Thank you and thank Redstate. I read it first in the AM, throughout the day and last in the PM. Redstate keeps me going in the positive direction and I thank you for keeping up the good fight.

  • NeoKong

Thank you for all your hard work.
God bless you and your family.

A big shout out also to Moe..
    Thank you too big fella’

  • SusanAnne Hiller

Yes, we will win and take our country back. The establishment, I’m sure, is scared–and rightfully so. You have been on the front lines. I know how hard that is. It takes a certain type of person to be able to take so much heat from the left and right–daily. The nasty emails, blog comments, tweets and swipes–infuriating and weakening.

I find that rest and good health allow for clarity. And the children. I look at my children, and as weary as I am, I pick myself and fight and write on for them. For their future. For their freedom. So many countless hours dedicated to the fight for freedom.

Rest up, now, ’cause we have lots of work to do in the coming months.

  • pamdale

and, I am here to say thank you Erick, from the bottom of my personal heart, and from our collective hearts, too.

We know that one of the good guys from Utah will be in Washington fighting, not only for Utah, but for all of America, and we thank you.

It was a tough battle here, but we move toward November with more resolve than ever. Thank you again.

  • SusanAnne Hiller

Jaded, I just said this to my husband. The venom displayed by the establishment campaign in Utah was disgusting. Fact is both the left and right do not want to see the rise of conservatives. So be ready….for the fight and the victories.

  • nunleigh

inspirational quote I recieve daily from the Patriot Post just happens to be for you today, Erick… “Cherish, therefore, the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. Do not be too severe upon their errors, but reclaim them by enlightening them.” –Thomas Jefferson, letter to Edward Carrington, 1787.You are my hero and a leader among men! Thank you!

how grateful I am for you young folks here at Red State and other conservative sites. At the age of 58, I am starting my re-education. I am learning the history and politics that was never taught to me in school and I am so grateful. It has given me strength to know that what we are doing is right and just. I never dreamed I would be a political activist but this is a fight we have to win. Like Reagan said, “If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on Earth.” Thank you for your motivation and inspiration to help us continue this fight!

  • smitch61

Great piece today. We will fight on together! The primary is Aug 3rd in Michigan for a chance to take on John Dingell. Dr. Robert Steele is running and I am helping. Please take the time to get to know him. He is a practicing cardiologist filled with common sense. We will get him as the GOP nomination and then on to the general.

John McCain pulled out of Michigan, huge mistake. Please help us to get the good Dr. into office. That would be yet one more house seat.

Conservatism, like anything in life, must be renewed occasionally. People calling themselves conservatives had taken the party and country down the wrong path.

Now, those ideals are coming back, with a new host of voices and faces. This is great for America and the continuing movement.

    Onward and forward.

    Those who live in apathy;
    Soon will lose their liberty.
No more to lead , but to follow.
No more to lend, but to borrow.

    Should we stand idly by;
And watch this nation surely die?
    Then those who died for liberty;
    Will have done so needlessly!

    Take now to your battle station;
Or become a third world nation.
    And from sea, to shining sea;
    Say farewell, to liberty

  • eburke

time in the UT race all I cared about was that Bennett was gone and didn’t have a preference for Lee, Eager or Bridgewater but was leaning toward Eager.

But the more I saw Mike Lee, who’s from an established, respected Mormon family in a state dominated by Mormons, get trashed by fellow Mormons in the state’s ‘good ol’ boy’ network, the more convinced I became that just like Nikki Haley in SC, he was *the* threat to the business as usual crowd. From that point on, I was all in.

And I’m *really* disappointed in Eager’s behavior in this whole gig. Her attacks on Lee and DeMint pretty much removed her from ever getting my support in any future political endeavors.

You’re not just fighting the good fight, Erick, you’re a national treasure. I don’t write much on RedState because I blog at GraniteGrok in the Free State of New Hampshire. But for the big picture, an always-clear-eyed look at political struggles all over the country, there’s no substitute for you and RedState. I read it every day. You are the reason for RedState’s success, with a little help from your millions of friends. Thank you for all that you do. I’ll fight on with you.

  • fightinmad

Erick, while you are re-energizing I would suggest you read this excellent book “The Day The Revolution Ended” by William H. Hallahan. It is a historical book about the last months of the revolutionary battle our Forefathers fought against another tyrant who wanted to stay as our king. It amazes me how they fought knowing that most colonists were content to be ruled by the king of England. They fought against armies much larger, and better prepared. They had no food but what they could scrape up in the wild, they had no shoes to wear in the winter snows so they wrapped their feet with rags, their weapons were old and oft times ammo-less, yet they marched on and fought with everything they had. And when the victory finally came they bowed to their knees and cried out “We have only one king, King Jesus!” And as He fought with them and for them them, He will fight with us and for us today. Our battle is against principalities and darkness. We fight for the Light and the Freedom to be rid of darkness. We fight for America to restore Her greatness before the earth and we shall win. You say rest. I say as our generals in the revolution, “We have no time to rest because our enemy doesn’t sleep.” If we are to purchase back our nation, the cost will not be trivial. It will be great! But, in the end we shall know that we are free and I only hope we can preserve our freedom once we regain it. God bless you and your efforts and God bless us with the victory and freedoms we so cherish!

Not to take away from the victory…

But I’m HIGHLY concerned that the network of “business as usual” squishies don’t attempt to split the republican party by either running as independents or offering consultation to the other side for opposition research in their bitter and worthless ways…

I think we need to be on high alert… thankfully wins like this give me energy… and I don’t wish to relax one bit.

All night listening to the results coming in and hearing the liberals jump for joy at Lyndon Johnson?’s landslide made me sick in the stomach. At Americans Abroad for Goldwater we worked our butts off just like the other conservatives back in the USA but the thought was ,”We came up empty”
    until November the sixth.
It took a Spaniard, The Count of the Andes, to write an editorial for the Madrid newspaper ABC.
He wrote under the title GOLDWATER:
There should be many Goldwaters speaking load and clear, even though their victory will not be immediate. The campaign of Goldwater has served it?s purpose to clear the air and mobilize the conservatives of the USA and the world. The public is not accustomed to recognize more successes than the immediate ones. For this reason it?s important to underline the great service that Goldwater has given not only to Americans ,but also abroad, pointing out that it is not only possible but a duty to swim against the tide in order to reaffirm the values of civilization. It is because the projection of what Goldwater signifies in America as in the rest of the world is far from over.

Great for Nikki Haley,Tim Scott,Mike Lee ,Trey Gowdy & the others, but there is much to do between now and November and don?t forget Karen Handel in Georgia!

It is because of your site and others like it that we, the great unwashed masses, have become aware that we are not alone in our love for this great country of ours. You have given us all hope, and for that we thank you. You have fought when we have become too tired. You have inspired us to get back up and join the fray.

Get some rest. We’ve got your back for as long as you need it. We’re in it for the long haul, and every small victory helps lift our spirits and lets us know that we are going to take back this country no matter what.

Thank you, sir, and God bless you and your family.

There are leaders and sages that emerge in times of crisis. Part of war is sustainability. Protracted conflicts create not only the “fallen” but also the “walking wounded.” Emotional fatigue is a wound that must heal and it is a wise leader and sage that knows when and how to promote recovery so as to be ready for future opportunities to win. I was a Chjuck DeVore supporter. You knew he was right, I knew he was right. It shook my resolve but I knew I could recover. You helped my recovery every day. George Washington was a master of strategic “recovery.” He knew his men were exhausted and naked. He gave them the time to recover. And he WON! You are in good company, Erick. We have your back!

  • myron_j_poltroonian

I’ve said this before and I’ll repeat it now: If we ever are foolish enough to form a third party (remember ol’ “H” Ross Perot?), we should call it the “American Party”. Our motto? “I’m an American”. (Think of the “I’m the NRA”, “I’m The Army”, etc. identity/advertising slogans.) i.e.: Whenever, asked or not, speaking in (or writing to, the) public, as either a candidate or ordinary citizen, one could always begin with: “I’m an American”. That would really get the “Progressive’s’ goat. And by that, I mean the media’s as well. They of course, would have to respond with incessant derogatory commentary which would only serve to further galvanize the overwhelming majority of America’s right of center and conservative leaning voters, Republican, Democrat and Independent. “How Sweet It Is”, to quote Jackie Gleason.

I have been a Republican for 50 years. Tomorrow I change my party registration. Mike Lee is too much. Bennett was too much. I will vote for the Constitution Party in this race this year, for a true conservative who has stood up for conservative principles his whole life. Someone who will run a clean campaign, unlike that of Mike Lee, someone who will make us proud of our nation again, unlike Mike Lee, someone who has fought with us instead of with a liberal Republican Governor, like Jon Huntsman, as Mike Lee did, someone who did not restrict contact as Huntsman’s Chief of Staff, for heads of conservative groups here in Utah. And, there are many of us who will do the same.

  • soljerblue

but anyone who believes a third party is a viable option in this, or any other year, whether state or federal, is cutting off his or her nose to spite their face. Go back through American political history all the way to TR’s Bull Moose campaign in 1912. The result is always the same — the most objectionable candidate wins. From Wilson in 1912 to Bill Clinton in ’92, third parties guarantee the wrong guy wins.

  • soljerblue

Thanks for hanging in when the rest of us were getting emotional “R & R” — you’d make Thomas Paine very proud indeed. Not to mention the rest of us. :-)

and shove them where the sun will never find them. Because frankly, your “principles” will fit right in with the stuff surrounding them.

Fortunately you live in a state where your stupidity won’t make a difference in the eventual outcome. Lee WILL be the next Senator from UT. The candidate of the Constitution Party will not be. And will never be.

And, comments like these are the reason I will not vote for Lee. They are unbecoming of someone who believes in truth and in the Savior. And, if you vote your conscience, no matter who wins, you will not feel bad about yourself. You never waste your vote when you do what is right. I guess that is why so few will be with the Savior when he comes.

  • mschmitt
  • eburke

sure you feel good about yourself. I mean, who cares if your sanctimony results in people who are the antithesis of what you believe end up winning and destroying our country; you can sit in your comfy armchair and feel all warm and fuzzy about yourself ’cause, ya know, it *is* all about you.

Oh, and btw, as a Christian my entire life, what your last statement has to do with politics *or* Christianity is beyond my comprehension.

    You doth beclown yourself.

  • mbecker908

And with comments like this it may be your only friend.

Listen closely you sanctimonious jerk. IT AIN’T ABOUT YOU.

And what in the world does any of this discussion have to with the Savior? You don’t want to get into a theological discussion here for two reasons. One it’s a political forum not a theological forum and two, just based on the utter vacuous stupidity of that comment you arguing theology would be akin to bringing a rotted stick to an artillery fight.

You need to find a conspiracy theory forum, you won’t do well here. Besides, we have Jooooooooooos and Muslims as well as self proclaimed atheists who post here and you might get dirty.

  • mbecker908

but I’m still trying to catch up on my redstate reading since my family moved last week and I’ve been unpacking and without internet for a few days. Whenever I’m asked where I get my info or how I know who to support, I tell folks to sign up for redstate. Now, I do my own research before I donate to any candidate, but this is the place I start, so thank you for keeping me informed and giving me a place to voice my opinions and vent my frustrations.

As for a vacation, I suggest you follow my example. My husband and I are spending our time and money visiting the Grand Canyon later this year.
