By clear implication it declares that other alleged purposes and justifications are illegitimate.

If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers.

I still like to read on occassion another declaration of independence at http://www.TheseSelfEvidentTruths.com that is styled after this most remarkable original. It shows how far we have fallen from our founding ideals and how very little changes in the affairs of man.
But today is not a day to be sad. Happy 4th of July to all patriots!

This “grand experiment” is still the best form of government ever known to man, and there are too many of us here today who WILL NOT let it fail. And I have been extraordinarily impressed by the number of young people who are standing up and telling those who want to take this away that THEY SHALL NOT PASS.
This country is in VERY good hands - these kids will make their way to the halls of Congress over the next few years.

BUT,
a year later, the victory at Yorktown was secured.
How’s that for (a) awesome and (b) a guide for our times? I have said it before, with oil spilling, the threat of the Internet being taken over by gov, with insurance companies shutting down because of Obamacare, with arrogant, imperious elected officials talking down to their constituents, an economy in the tank, we are in our dark days, just as our forebears were 230 years ago. But I firmly believe if we persevere through that darkness, just as they did, knowing that the bright sun will soon rise, we too shall emerge victorious.

This year, it’s weird. On the one hand, I’m patriotic, enthusiastic, etc., but on the other hand, I’m scared that I’m watching the country die, and it hurts to think about that. Anybody remember “The Fellowship of the Ring” (movie version) and Boromir’s death scene? How he was shot, kept fighting, shot again, fought more, shot a third time, and then he didn’t get up again? That’s what I’m scared of happening to my country.
BUT! Then I come here to RedState, I see the Declaration right on the main page, and I take heart knowing that there are so many people that want to save this country and return her to her original glory, and I feel so much better, so much more hopeful. And I begin to hope that maybe, just maybe, my country will be pulled from the brink of a tragic death scene by ordinary heroes. I take heart and comfort knowing I’m not alone in my patriotism.
Because of all the wickedness in this land, we don’t deserve it, but I’m going to say it anyway: God bless America. Happy Fourth, everyone!

As for the wickedness, yes, but remember, God promised if those called by His name would turn to Him and repent, for their sake he would heal their land. And God ALWAYS keeps His promises.
I know it’s kinda silly, but what the heck…all day today they’ve had an A-Team marathon on one of the stations and I’ve watched a few episodes. I was a young kid when that was on TV in the eighties. But I remember that time, how patriotic most people were, how it was cool to be politically incorrect, how confident America was in herself. Remember, that wasn’t that long ago. And millions upon millions of those folks who lived it, and remember it, are out there, waiting for that to happen again. And they’ve raised kids to have the same expectations about life and America, and those now young adults waiting for it to happen (for them and their children) for the first time. It is up to those of us who remember to bring it about again. And it starts in just over 120 days.
Me and dad were watching the show and talking about how corny it might be, but how good the ‘can-do’ spirit of the protagonists was and how that was all over the 80s, music, Tv, etc. Dad pointed out that it was President Reagan; he had restored America’s confidence, and in those days, the media picked up on America’s mood, rather than try to control it.
Remember, there are three groups of people in America: those who love her and want to preserve her, the biggest group, the conservatives; those who aren’t really sure that what they think or believe is right, the moderates, the next biggest group; and those who actively hate America and want to destroy her, the liberals, also the smallest group. It is up to us to show the moderates what they know deep down is right, is right, and that it’s okay to wear it on your sleeve. It is also up to us to neuter and defang the portion of the country that wants to destroy it. I was going to say muzzle, but as long as they don’t promote sedition (which many actively do, and which must be stopped), they have the right to say what they want. But they don’t necessarily have the right to act on it, and that’s what we must use the law and our next legislative victories to secure.
Final thing: not to get all Platonic and philosophical on you, but always remember, that all the good you can think of is eternal; it is God’s creation. In this ‘in-between’ (the physical and spiritual worlds), it’s abode is the hearts and minds of men and women who love the Good, the True and the Beautiful. Great artists hold images of untold beauty in their hearts and minds; when they put those images on canvas or in stone, they share that beauty with the world, and it becomes part of the world. Many great works of beauty have been destroyed through history; but these were replaced with equal works of beauty because Beauty itself never died; it lay in the hearts of men and women who brought it back into the world. Like those artists, people who love Truth and Justice and Freedom can bring those things back into the world, even if previous works of these have been destroyed. They just have to be willing.
