Does Georgia Right to Life Now Support Embryonic Stem Cell Research?

I am guessing Dan Becker and Georgia Right to Life are just fine and dandy with embryonic stem cell research.

They don’t like Karen Handel funding cervical cancer screenings, but they love them some Nathan Deal despite his support for a Henry Waxman backed piece of legislation funneling $500 million to the abortion industry explicitly for abortions.

Well, Nathan Deal also signed on to NANCY PELOSI authored legislation that, in its own description, “allows for the use of fetal tissue in medical research and appropriates funds to the National Institutes of Health.”

More language from the legislation describing the legislation:

The bill codifies the Clinton executive order lifting the ban on fetal tissue research from induced abortions.

Yes, yes, it happened in the past. Just like Karen Handel’s transgression. But Georgia Right to life is attacking Karen Handel and supporting Nathan Deal. Deal explicitly voted to fund abortions and explicitly voted to fund embryonic stem cell research.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Do Dan Becker and Georgia Right to Life agree?

Without your contributions, I would not know this disappointing, but important information.

…and haven’t done their homework. Of course that would mean they are more concerned with politics than protecting life. That’s the conclusion I would draw from this.

Oh, and I would make sure not to support Ga Right to Life with any donations if they are going to be lazy.

Erick, the difference between the vote cited in your latest opp dump and Karen Handel’s vote? Deal’s occurred roughly 20 years ago. Handel’s? 2005.

This is getting pathetic. Please let us know if you have something on Nathan that occurred within the last decade or so.

The facts are these: After joining the GOP in 1995, Nathan Deal has an unimpeachable pro-life voting record.

While Karen Handel was voting to send taxpayer dollars for “family planning services” to Planned Parenthood–in 2005–Nathan Deal was being honored by Concerned Women of America, Family Research Council, and National Right to Life for his pro-life record.

Regarding the provably false argument that Handel’s vote merely allowed money to flow to “cervical cancer screenings” (In fact, the vote before the County–featured in the minutes as “family planning services”), National Right to Life writes, “While federal money comes with restrictions prohibiting its use for abortion (some state money does not), every dollar Planned Parenthood receives from the government frees up other funds for the performance and promotion of abortion.”

Oh, and Nathan Deal voted for the Pence amendment, which prohibits–not sends unfettered–any funds from going to Planned Parenthood.

Erick, in yesterday’s AJC you said the Deal campaign would throw “social conservative dirt” at Handel during the runoff. I have no idea whether that’s true. But do you remember a few years back–before the tv show, the book, and your role as Palin’s puppeteer: you used to care about “social conservative dirt.”

You’re really pulling out all the stops in this race, Erick. And you seem have lost your soul along the way.

This organization National and State affiliates lost their way. They had a cause but was corrupted by their quest for a seat at the table. They want to make sure they are on the winning side and do not make an enemy. They are no longer feared by candidates and therefore ineffective. RTL-INO’s!

Sounds like a blogger I know.

is right on that same bad road. I hadn’t realized just how bad it had gotten until this election cycle. Now it’s so obvious as to be laughable–if it were at all funny to politicize the lives of the unborn, that is.

  • pompadour

Or was it a single issue? If it was a single issue, that’s pretty damned solid evidence that you’re dead on about Handel.

Not that there’s any guarantee the man at the top will read it. I’ve been laying out evidence here on another topic for weeks–and I have not been alone. It had no effect whatsoever. I don’t understand it. Very disappointing…

Frankly it seems to me that both candidates have fairly strong pro-life credentials with a minor black mark or two. So why are we having this discussion at all? Why is this the battleground on which we are playing? If both sides are equally not-exactly-pure-but-close, why is this the field on which the fight for the nomination is being played?

Why aren’t Handel supporters, Erick included, simply bypassing this discussion and slamming Deal for his ethics violation while in Congress? He left Congress early to avoid censure because he was wrongly using his office to generate thousands of dollars in business for his family’s auto salvage company. That’s not Rangel-like corruption but it’s getting there. Handel doesn’t have anything on her record remotely approaching that kind of abuse of office. Why not just run with that? If Deal abused his position as congressman, what’s to stop him from doing the same thing as the chief executive of Georgia?

  • bloodbuzzohio

And unlike Erick’s opp dump, Handel’s vote was within the last decade.

As happens surprisingly often in political campaigns, we’ve ended up with two candidates who aren’t entirely perfect. They’ve each cast bad votes, one much more recent than the other, one for vastly more money than the other. Perhaps its best to look at what their positions are in the present instead of the past, given that each have imperfect pasts? My personal bias is in favor of the outsider vs the establishment, and thus I like Erick and Sarah’s endorsement of Handel. But certainly we should examine both their stands on the issues, none more important than Life. Based on what Ive read so far it seems like both candidates are pretty strongly Pro-Life in terms of their present positions, so perhaps Georgia Right to Life should be saving their money for use against people that actually support abortion? I think I read somewhere there’s an election coming up in a few months, and there just might be one or two candidates who support abortion and need defeating. It’d be nice if they still had money left to spend on those races, instead of wasting it on a Pro-Lifer vs Pro-Lifer fight. Just a thought :) .

    And I feel your pain.

    Truly.

While in congress as a Republican, Deal helped create this bloated mess we call the budget. He voted for Medicare expansion. He voted for the $26.5 Billion “No Child Left Behind”. He is a birther and called fellow citizens of Georgia “Ghetto Grandmothers”. WE DON”T NEED DEAL!

As a poster on another site said: “Sorry, No Deal!”

  • fultonbabe

1993 Deal vs. 2005 Handel? Makes a difference to me.

Unfortunately GRTL, like most small non-profits, is not equipped to fight the sound-bite media war. Not enough money. Not enough staff. Not sound-bite conducive subject matter. But they do their research, and understand the complexities of life issues.

Read up a bit on IVF and learn why there must be restraints (opposed by Handel); Octomom is not the only problem. Embryonic human beings are often disposed of when they don’t “look good enough” or they have genetic issues like Down Syndrome, or they are the wrong gender. Some don’t survive the freeze/thaw process. Older fetuses are sometimes killed to “reduce” triplets or quads to twins or singletons. There are ways to avoid these deaths, but that is “restrictive.”

    Beware RTL!

After their screwup in (N)(S) Dakota several years ago, it occured to me that they are in business for a reason. Allegedly, that reason is to stop abortion. But, stop and think for a moment. They’ve had 35 years of a secure job, a steady income, and lots of money and power to “manage”. So, what happens when Roe v. Wade is overturned?

    C’mon: what happens?

There are other, ethical groups who are fighting abortion and it’s allied atrocities and would welcome your support.

  • bloodbuzzohio

That link has no bearing on the facts as they relate to Handel’s 2005 vote to send taxpayer funds to Planned Parenthood.

  • bloodbuzzohio

“My personal bias is in favor of the outsider vs the establishment, and thus I like Erick and Sarah?s endorsement of Handel”

I need for you to please explain how Deal is establishment and Handel is an outsider.

Handel has served–in five years time, mind you–on the Fulton County Commission, Secretary of State, and now seeks the governor’s office. Her entire campaign operation is Sonny Perdue’s team. Sonny Perdue’s money people. Sonny Perdue’s communications staff.

    Deal has been a congressman.

I’m not mocking you, I’m just curious how you arrived at Deal being the insider and Handel being the outsider.
