Why a Federal Grand Jury Could Put Georgia’s Governor’s Mansion in Democrat Hands

“With dissatisfaction toward Washington at an all time high, the Georgia GOP might want to think carefully before choosing a 20 year Washington insider under a federal investigation as its horse on which to ride into November.”

I mentioned this article yesterday. A federal grand jury is asking questions about Nathan Deal’s business deals (pun intended).

Deal, for his part, says he is not the subject of any federal investigation — which either means he is right or United States Attorneys are randomly subpoenaing people to talk to federal grand juries about Nathan Deal for no reason other than politics. Riiiigggghhhhtttttt.

This will be the first election since passage of the Voting Rights Act that Republicans do not control the White House during redistricting. That makes solidifying Republican majorities in as many states as possible crucial as we head into redistricting in 2011.

A federal grand jury investigating Nathan Deal could seriously undermine the Republicans’ chances in November should he be the nominee. But to understand why, we need to back up to March 29, 2010.

On that day,

[T]he Office of Congressional Ethics released its report [despite Deal's resignation], concluding that Mr. Deal appeared to have improperly used his office to pressure Georgia officials to continue a vehicle inspection program that generated hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for his family’s auto salvage business.

The 138-page report details how Mr. Deal and his chief of staff intervened in 2008 and 2009 on behalf of the company, Recovery Services Inc., also known as Gainesville Salvage and Disposal. The report also said Mr. Deal had improperly failed to disclose that he was a corporate officer at the company, meaning that the $75,000 he earned from the business in 2008 violated a House limit on members’ outside income.

Certainly the Deal campaign can say this was a partisan move. Once a congressman resigns, the ethics show is over. But, were Deal to do that, the next question must become: did Nathan Deal resign to pre-empt ethics report?

If you remember, Deal intended to resign sooner than he did. But the outcry over him leaving before the health care fight kept him in. Ironically, in doing so, it also kept the Ethics Committee’s investigation going.

And what did House Ethics Committee find? Six ethical violations of House Rules.

That brings us forward to now. A federal grand jury is investigating now.

When the House Ethics Committee takes the unusual step of laying serious smack down on members of congress for outside business dealings personally benefiting the members of congress, federal investigations typically ensure. Those federal investigations are generally serious.

With a lot at stake headed into the general election, including Georgia picking up a congressional district, the Geogia GOP is taking a serious gamble against the odds in choosing Nathan Deal to challenge Roy Barnes.

Word of the federal investigation is only the beginning. The Democrats will use it to get independent voters on their side. With dissatisfaction toward Washington at an all time high, the Georgia GOP might want to think carefully before choosing a 20 year Washington insider under a federal investigation as its horse on which to ride into November.

but I’m less and less thrilled with either at this point.

Hoping that Handel will really be a fiscal conservative and will actually work (Sonny appears to just be being a figurehead these days).

Can we get Achance to be Handel’s chief of staff for a year?

I voted for her and I will again. Republicans here are firmly behind her. We know there is funny business with Nathan and we know Karen will make a great governor.

A Republican candidate under a federal investigation could be a huge liability in a hotly contested race.

Although, for democrats, being under a federal investigation is a resume` enhancement.

    Go figure.

mostly conservative states that end up turning blue come election night. VA and NC are sliding dangerously into this category.

Alevedra (sp?) King, Martin Luther King’s niece, has come out for Deal. She called Deal the true pro-life candidate.

Thus in Nathan Deal’s corner, he has Alevedra King, Jack Kingston, and Newt Gingrich.

In Karen Handel’s corner, she has Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, and Jan Brewer.

    He’s in Handel’s corner as well :-)

I will support the eventual winner and will be voting for Handel but as I said above, I’m nervous about both.

The vultures are circling Charlie Rangel. There are a number of serious candidates opposing him in the Primary, including Adam Powell IV. Most Democrats actually hope this comes to a head sooner rather than later, so that he can be defeated in the Primary rather than giving a chance for a situation like Cao /Jefferson in Louisiana. I think he actually has a better chance to be defeated in the Primary as his district is the most Democratic in the Country (not particularly gerrymandered, there are just that many Democrats on the north end of Manhattan (the district is based around Harlem)

It strikes me that the US Attorney’s GJ investigation probably would be looking at a potential violation of depriving his constituents of his “honest services”, the fraud charge ruled “overly broad” by the SCOTUS. While the ruling (08-1384) does not mandate that a conviction be overturned, it does cast doubt on any prosecution using this fraud case theory. Since I’ve never met a prosecutor who wanted to even start a case which did not have a strong probability of conviction, this might be a case of political prosecution (since the objective is the public disclosure of the investigation and not any outcome at all).

Of course any lowlife who would intervene to further his own financial interests could well be involved in serious criminal activity.

It is amazing to me that so few people actually turned out for the Primary voting on July 20th, and instead of voting for a Constitutional Conservative, State’s Rights advocate, Pro-Life Advocate, fiscal responsibility, and a person who would stand up to the ever encroaching tyrannical Federal Government in the State of Georgia’s business, WE HAVE TWO OF THE POOREST CHOICES TO VOTE ON IN THE GUBENATORIAL RACE RUNOFF.

Everyone who didn’t come out to vote has no room to complain. Even if our chosen candidate didn’t make it in the runoffs, we at least exercised our right to vote as a citizen of this Country and this State. Shame on those that sat on their duffs instead, this is too important of a year when all votes count. Get up and get out to the polls to vote on August 10th and again in the General Election on Nov. 2nd. We need everyone that qualifies to vote.

Both of the runoff candidates have ethic problems, but the mainstream media doesn’t tell you all about Handel’s misdealings in her career and while she was Secretary of State, but gladly tells you about Nathan Deal’s ethic problems. It all seems to be one-sided. Karen Handel has had the audacity to chastise and used smear tactics on her gubenatorial opponets, when her own background is far from clean. When they fight back, she pretends to be pure as the driven snow, and the media chastises them for fighting back by telling them the voters are sick and tire of it, but they never point the finger at Handel who started the mess. Go figure! Is it because Gov. Sonny Perdue is behind Karen’s campaign. She is certainly following Sonny’s campaign consultants advice. If Karen Handel is voted into office and can beat former Gov. Roy Barnes in the General election, will Karen Handel be our next Governor or simply a puppet of the current Administration with Sonny Perdue pulling her strings and advising on what do to next behind the scenes. It’s the old guard GOP pushing her forward and slamming her competition all the way. Don’t we deserve a Governor who can stand on his or her own two feet? A Governor who is strong on the issues important to Georgians?

What a predicament we have ourselves in thanks to those who influenced the outcome of the Primary and left the Constiutional Conservative movement with the choice again between the lesser of two evils. Have we learned nothing since the election of 2008. Yes, it is a sad time in Georgia when we are left with these choices.

Also the NRA backed Nathan Deal.

Nathan Deal likes to dismiss Karen Handel’s endorsements by Palin & Romney as outsiders. Now Nathan Deal brings in an outsider by the name of Mike Huckabee.
