Ken Buck Wins

Sigh. We will miss you Cinamon.

On December 21, 2009, I asked a very simple question:

Why exactly must we support Jane Norton in Colorado instead of Ken Buck? I’m not saying I am or am not, but why must I? Lots of people think we must because the same guys in Washington who said Charlie Crist was our best hope in Florida say she is in Colorado.

The blowback was tremendous. Lots of people immediately accused me of trying to hand Colorado to the Democrats.

But like I did with Marco Rubio all the way back on March 19, 2009, and like I did with Mike Lee and Bob Bennett back in September of 2009, and Nikki Haley back in August of 2009, and like I did with Rand Paul back in March of this year, I have persevered for Ken Buck — sometimes despite more criticism than applause. RedState has persevered for Ken Buck too.

We at RedState have beaten the bushes for Ken Buck. We have hounded third party groups to get involved for him. We have hounded organizations and people to sit on the sidelines when they leaned toward Norton.

Jim DeMint jumped in for Ken. FreedomWorks jumped in for Ken. Gun Owners of America jumped in for Ken. The momentum built. The tide turned. And today I am very, very, very pleased to tell you Ken Buck is the Republican Senate nominee for Colorado.

Now I have to tell you something I’ve said before, but few paid attention to. I am quite serious — this Senate primary has meant more to me than any of the others. I’ve gotten to know Ken and his wife. We’ve spent time together. I know in ways I cannot convey how desperately we need a guy like Ken Buck in the Senate with Jim DeMint.

Looking at the trends in Colorado tonight, we’ll have him there. Ken Buck wins.

This Coloradan is mighty pleased and thanks you for your support, Mr. Erickson.

Erick was right, his boots ARE made for winning

betsyred (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 6:58AM EDT (link)

This guy doesn’t back down and his supporters are rock-rib conservatives that find the smell of a RINO far more offensive than that of some cow manure on boots. Naysayers here remained critical through last night. In response to a comment posted yesterday that if Norton was elected, it would be a sign that Colorado Republicans were not yet ready to return to Red State status, a frequent writer responded with “Silliness”. Silly, indeed. He won. Now let’s see all that warm fuzzy party unity so often discussed here and get behind a guy that has what to takes to beat the odds, beat Bennet and stand up to Obama and any that support the current downward spiral of our economy. A defeat for John McCain and Grow Our Party, at least in this case, is a win for Colorado. Thanks, Erick. Your support was huge in this race and your posts kept Buck supporters going strong.

You know, that was one of the few races tonight...

…where there was a real race on both sides of the same primary. If the ratio holds up, those numbers don’t bode well for Colorado Democrats.

That the incumbent Democrat Buck won his primary with 54% of the vote is *not* impressive. The White House has nothing to cheer about..

Jane Norton had the machine behind her this whole primary and Ken Buck had to mainly rely on grassroots donations, so this argument is as lame as when it was first made.
Now that Ken has won, his fund-raising (since that seems to matter more to certain posters here than his vote-getting) will increase greatly if the NRSC and RNC are serious about wanting to take back the Senate.

everything else is getting old.

I can’t remember where I read it or what the exact numbers are but somewhere a couple of months ago as I was reading an article on what historical factors comprise a successful campaign, the author shattered the myth of the invincibility of the ‘well-funded’ candidate.

Can’t remember the exact percentage (something in the neighborhood of 42% sticks in my mind for some reason) but whatever the number was, I distinctly remember that the best funded candidate prevailed less than 50% of the time.

The last time I checked, they counted votes, not bank accounts.

Has this place become such an echo chamber that you can’t even point out real election issues? Could it be viewed as a call for people to recognize a deficiency and try to do something about it, or because I happened to vote for Norton everything I say is immediately construed to be anti-Buck? If that’s the case, then I have nothing more to say about this race.

You did. It's the only thing you mentioned in your post.

eburke (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 1:14AM EDT (link)

But FWIW – my comment wasn’t directed solely at you. It was a comment in general about what seems to be the sole criteria by so many in the political world that the only thing that matters is how much money some candidate raised.

If the media in general, and political pundits in particular, spent 1/10th as much time talking about the issues a candidate believed in rather than playing this endless ‘horse race’ mentality of who’s up in the polls and who’s raised the most money we’d be a lot better served. That frustration goes across the board. You’re comment just precipitated the rant against that whole mindset.

My apologies for not making that more clear.

doesn’t mean I exclude everything else. If I had done so in a diary, you’d have a point. I don’t have to lay out everything in a single comment.

Mostly, this is because

aesthete (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 1:27AM EDT (link)

the better funded candidate is not the incumbent. Incumbents win their races approximately 90+% of the time, and thus a challenge to an incumbent needs to be more highly funded. That said, funding does sometimes receive overmuch attention.

“It is a popular delusion that the government wastes vast amounts of money through inefficiency and sloth. Enormous effort and elaborate planning are required to waste this much money.”

This was a study that looked at non-incumbent races.

My bad for not pointing that out in the comment.

They specifically were looking at the role that funding played in races where incumbency wasn’t a factor.

Jane was well-funded and she lost. The Buck camp is ready to take on the “glass is half empty” crowd here and elsewhere. We know what was accomplished last night and we have just gotten started. Keep posting the negatives, the downsides, the bleak and dreary possiblities of the future. Some here mounted a strong effort to break the morale and always paint a doom and gloom picture…..better just quit on Ken Buck because things were not looking good. We were encouraged to trust your judgment because you could see all the pitfalls of standing with Ken Buck and the rest of us were blind and misguided. The drumbeat of defeatism and negativity won’t stop but you’re right about one thing—it is silliness.

Maybe I just wasn't reading this site...

logus (Diary) Tuesday, August 10th at 11:53PM EDT (link)

or any other right leaning site focused on national/state elections and primaries…

Where was the push to elect someone else other than Roy Blunt for the Missouri Senate seat? Roy Blunt is a GOP establishment candidate and he’s certainly not got a pristine record or one that’d make me think he’s the best guy for the job, principled, valued, able. Where was the support for Purgason or one of the other Republican contenders for the GOP nomination for Senate in Missouri? Did Redstate back someone? If not, why?

Maybe I just missed the whole boat, but with Blunt having received over 400,000 votes in the primary to Purgason’s ~70,000, and many people being quite aware of who Blunt is as a politician makes me believe that “everyone” believes Robin Carnahan and that seat is just so open that political compromising is more important so as to not lose the seat to Carnahan and the Democrats. I thought principles and values are important, as well as the resume’ and record of the candidate. Purgason and/or some of the other Republican candidates seemed to have all of those points in spades, not Blunt. Yet Blunt’s got name recognition, he can win a race against fellow dynastic opponent Carnahan…

I smell scaredy cats waffling.

For whom?

logus (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 8:59AM EDT (link)

Erick or Tom Purgason?

Missouri is a bellwether state supposedly, thus of utmost importance, all the moreso when Prop C was on the ballot. If Ken Buck is electable in Colorado over Jane Norton, then Tom Purgason was electable in Missouri over Roy Blunt.

If Erick can see to looking at individual races all over the country outside of his homestate, why not Missouri too?

Winning isn’t everything. Values and principles are more important. If the effort is to pull the Republican party over the whole nation into a more fiscal and social pattern, you don’t support a candidate with not so stellar a conservative and statesman record just because you think he’s got a better shot at beating the opposing party’s candidate. That’s equivocation, that’s believing that the ends justify the means. Are we looking for more politicians or are we looking for statesmen to help turn around this country? Statesmen will turn this nation around. Politicians will just continue to do everything they can to stay in their seat and is in their best interest, not necessarily their constituents.

Similarly, I suspect we’ll see Tom Schweich running for Senate against Claire McCaskill. Another politician, backed by the establishment, and then Redstate will have two “RINO”s on their hands for Missouri. Silver linings or equivocations? What are we to aspire to? John McCain was an equivocation, though to be sure most of the front runners in that primary race were shades of imperfection. We bemoan the choice we were left with, but the silver lining in this nation is that while Obama is doing so much to this nation, he’s destroying his party too, and there is still time to save our nation. There can be victory in defeat.

Sorry for my early morning rant and pontification… I can get my dander up…

I supported Norton, believing she would be the stronger candidate (I still do). However, this will be a tough race, and Dems nominated a candidate who is a very strong fundraiser and has the full support of Obama and the unions. They will try to bury Buck under negative attacks because Bennett has some very big weakness’s, like his financial screw up in his time running the Denver public schools. Buck will need money to fight back against these attacks, and to let people know about Bennett’s record. Norton has endorsed Ken Buck, its time all of us Norton supporters do the same. Buck will be a great senator, and Bennett has been a terrible one. Remember, even $5 helps.

Kingmaker

red_baron Wednesday, August 11th at 12:35AM EDT (link)

I did not have a side in this race as I am not a Coloradan. I do not know enough really about Buck or Norton to say who I would vote for if I were. I will be very happy though to vote for Mike Lee instead of Bennett. However, I wish this post were more about Ken Buck, or even about Redstate’s success, and less about “I”.

As I said in one of your posts on Dan Coats, the more a person gets too invested in wanting to be a king-maker, the easier it is say demonstrably false things about the competition. And lest anyone think I’m just trolling, go look at those posts as I was one of many highlighting the misleading and dishonest attacks.

Lastly, I have always been amused with your attacks on the NRSC and Cornyn for getting involved in contested primaries. Cornyn has just as much right to support candidates in contested primaries as Erick Erickson does or anyone else does. It sounds a little hypocritical for one side of a contested primary to tell the other that they should really stay out. It is kind of like complaining when dishonest people make crap up about someone like Nikki Haley only to turn around and bend the truth yourself. But I suppose that epidemic in DC and politics.

" Cornyn has just as much right to support candidates in contested primaries as Erick Erickson does"

eburke (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 12:45AM EDT (link)

Erick Erickson is a private individual who runs/contributes to a political blog. He is not a member of the Republican Party leadership or establishment.

John Cornyn is the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. His job is to try to get Republicans elected in the *General* election. It is unwise, counterproductive, engenders hard feelings, and wastes party resources when the national party tries to influence local Republican primaries, *especially* when they continually push and promote candidates who are unendingly to the left of the very people who the NRSC expects to donate to them and to pound the pavement for them.

John Cornyn *wishes* he could have half the track record that EE has in picking primary winners. But the bottom line is, the national party apparati needs to stay the hell out of local races until the local folks have selected their candidate.

A Clarification is in Order

In order to clarify my post we’ll just retype yours.

No he doesn’t.

Erick Erickson is a private individual who runs/contributes to a popular political blog with some influence. He is not a member of the Republican Party leadership or establishment.

John Cornyn is the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. His job is to try to get Republicans elected in the *General* election. It is unwise, counterproductive, engenders hard feelings, and wastes party resources when the national party triesoutsiders try to influence local Republican primaries, *especially* when they continually push and promote candidates who are unendingly to the left, right, or otherwise of the very people who the NRSC expects to donate to them and to pound the pavement for them.live there.

John CornynEE *wishes* he could have half the track record that EERomney or Palin ha[ve] in picking primary winners. But the bottom line is, the national party apparatioutsiders need to stay the hell out of local races until the local folks have selected their candidate.

Endorsements? Yeah sure that is great in some races. Outside donations are perfectly fine and a great way to fire up conservatives. But what “locals” really don’t like are outside attacks or attacks ads or outsiders who think their opinions matter more in the election than people who have the right to vote there.

Nice job of straining at gnats while totally failing to refute the points.

eburke (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 12:57PM EDT (link)

So….what you’re saying is that the votes of Al Franken, my douchebag senator, don’t affect you?

That’s funny. I sure as hell thought that his vote in favor of HCR will cause you to have to live under the program wherever you happen to live.

Your conflating apples and oranges, Sparky. “Outside” groups on both sides of the political aisle have every right and every expectation to get involved in these types of races because, McFly, these people’s votes in Congress affect every. single. one. of us.

The National and State Parties should remain neutral in contested primaries (except in extraordinary circumstances) for the simple reason that they *are* the Party. Their role is to elect candidates from their party in the general election, not play kingmaker in primaries.

Me thinks that based on this post, and on others where you have given voice to your anti-Erickson screed, that you’re *real* problem is a deep-seeded bitterness toward Mr. Erickson’s success.

But hey, if you’re that smart…you can always start your own site. Let us know how that goes for ya.

If you are incapable of registering disagreement without resorting to childish and ridiculous snark I see no point in arguing the point with you. Or perhaps you voted in the DFL side in which case you should get your head examined. Perhaps “eburke” doesn’t fit the profile.

Yet you, who hail from MN originally (or so you say) and now live in Utah (sorry I missed that clue) have still found it quite appropriate to give your cogent opinions of races in all kind of places that are not Utah OR MN.

Eburke must have hit his target for you to get so pissy so fast. You get no points either, Sparky, and we’ll just deduct the 2 points you previously had accrued. That was mostly for spelling.

While you castigate eburke and Erick Erickson for expressing their preferences for particular candidates, even though they are not in the state where the election is being held, you yourself have in your posting history a number of comments on candidates in various states. I don’t know what state you live in, but you can’t live in South Carolina (Nikki Haley), Colorado (Ken Buck) and Indiana (Dan Coats) all at the same time.

So how do you justify talking about what “locals” don’t really like when you appear to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time. So what state DO you live in? If you can step up and answer that, I’ll have a much better idea of what you, locally speaking, really don’t like about outsiders taking an interest in your elections.

As eburke said above, we take an interest because these congressional candidates make decisions that affect all of us, not just their immediate constituents. Are we to believe that you don’t give a snap who wins in other parts of the country other than your mystery state?

Does he lives in the state of denial.

Reading Comprehension = Essential Skill

red_baron Wednesday, August 11th at 11:50PM EDT (link)

Hypocrite? Perhaps you should go read that again. Especially the last paragraph. Nowhere did I say people shouldn’t have opinions. And if you looked at my posts you would see I specifically said I didn’t know enough about Buck or Norton to cast an opinion because I am not a Coloradoan. I have said as much of other races. I am currently a resident of Utah although I have lived in a number of states. However, if you had read my post a little more carefully you would have known I live in Utah. How else would I vote for Mike Lee?

And frankly no one likes it when outsiders come in and tell you they know best. Just ask Erick as he has said as much about the “guys in Washington” many times over. My problem is he does the same thing.

If you had read my last paragraph you would have understood I am ok with endorsements, ok with raising money for good conservatives, campaigning, etc. I am not ok with outside groups and individuals coming in and trashing republicans in contested primaries. And Erick has absolutely no problem s with bending the truth to trash those he hasn’t endorsed. Just ask Dan Coats.

But you see, Mr. Erickson does know about these races and people.

gekster (Diary) Thursday, August 12th at 12:09AM EDT (link)

What he does here is inform people of such, as do many others.
He knows the inside track on alot of thes races, and he tells us what he knows, as do many others.

And you will have to point out the “lies” that Erick has made.

Now I suggest you take your panties off, shake them out, and then put them back on, as it appears they are in a wad.

You are worng on a few essential points, Kingmaker

takemccain2 (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 12:47AM EDT (link)

1) John Cornyn and his crack team created the mess in Florida where we now have both a Democrat and a left-leaning Independent in Governor Charlie Crist for the Republican candidate to compete against. The Florida GOP rebelled when the NRSC stepped in and endorsed someone before the voters in the state made up their minds. That isn’t right, no matter how you want to spin it. The job of the NRSC should be to support the primary winners and not tell primary voters whom to select.
2) After creating the disaster in Florida, a traditionally red state that the GOP should win but might not now, Cornyn said that he ” learned his lesson ” and that the NRSC would not interfere in anymore primaries. Of course, he said this and then turned around and made appearances for Jane Norton who was encouraged to run by John McCain. McCain tried to get money siphoned away from all other candidates and this fueled the grassroots conservatives to back Ken Buck.

Again, you can spin it how you want but the cold hard facts are as I’ve stated them.

I think, therefore I am not a Democrat. I fight, therefore I am not a Republican.

What takemccain stated below is exactly right……and Cornyn hasn’t changed….one bit. For Cornyn, the covert motto is liberal Republican first, conservative Republican never.

Uh, No They Don't

IJB Wednesday, August 11th at 1:33AM EDT (link)

The NRSC, the RNC, and other outside party groups are well within their rights to *recruit* candidates to any race in the country that they see fit. (I get very tired of the locals who decry committee recruiting – the committees are *there* for *exactly* that, among other things, and if the candidates the committees recruit are duds there’s a simple remedy: vote them out in the Primary!)

But the Party Committees absolutely DO NOT have a right to “support” any candidate in a contested primary (not including “extraordinary circumstances”, where one of the candidates is demonstrably corrupt, or a spouse-beater or something).

You are dead wrong about this.

Is Ken Buck a RINO?

uvbogden (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 6:34AM EDT (link)

I don’t know about you, but I take the Tea Party movement seriously. The Tea Party is made up of ordinary people who educate themselves about the issues and put themselves out of their comfort zone to try and help get the country back on the right track. I don’t take kindly to Ken Buck saying “Tell those dumbass Tea Party people to quit asking questions about Obamas birth certificate.”

Buck disrespected the Birthers, but this seems to be OK with everyone since most people are not interested in this. While it’s OK not to believe in the Birther beliefs, there are many intelligent and honorable people who do believe. I am sometimes swayed by their arguments, and it doesn’t help Obama’s cause in this that he has fought tooth and nail to prevent anyone from looking into his redords.

Buck also disrespected the Tea Party as a whole, revealing that he either doesn’t get the Tea Party or he rejects what they stand for. He also spoke in favor of a “path to citizenship” for illegal aliens residing in the U.S. Without Tea Party support, Buck might not have won the nomination, but the way he shows his gratitude is by this?

In my book, anyone that doesn’t get the Tea Party, rejects its tenets, or favors amnesty is a RINO or a closet progressive and does not deserve Tea Party or conservative support. Are we sending to Washington people who will not prove to be trustworthy conservatives? Isn’t that exactly what we’re trying to prevent?

Ken Buck is a conservative

BA Cyclone (Diary) Wednesday, August 11th at 7:34AM EDT (link)

From my view he supports the majority views of the TEA Party.

Those views would have nothing to do with the “birther” fringe. The “birther” argument frankly has nothing to do with the TEA Party. The argument is a total distraction from the basic thrust of the movement. To put any focus upon this is to distract from conservatism, TEA parties, and republicanism.

Also, do a search for Senate Conservatives Fund and finish your research on Mr. Buck there.

If Ken Buck is a RINO, it’s because the Republican Party has left conservatives, not the other way around. He is a republican.

Fringe?

rickcaston Wednesday, August 11th at 9:57AM EDT (link)

Since when does simply wanting the truth represent the fringe? If it does then we are ALL in trouble. No matter how you spin it there is something terribly wrong when someone running for the office of the President of the United States purposefully seals documents related to their birth and school history. I don’t think it takes a person being on the “fringe” to stop and go hmmmmm, I wonder WHY Obama would make such records unavailable? What is the big deal? What is he hiding? Why would they be sealed by a judge? How many of us, if running for office, would find it unacceptable to produce our birth certificate and school transcripts if asked. The America people have a right to ask, they SHOULD ask, and HAVE asked. We are entitled, by our Constitution, to make sure a “Natural Born Citizen” is in office. And by the way, a “Certificate of Live Birth is NOT a birth certificate. Call me fringe if you like but I simply want the truth. So far the Messiah has not proven he was born here. Now that we’ve stuck it to the establishment, and we appear to be well on our way to elective a wave of true conservatives in the biggest wave election in the last 100 years, that line of attack has become as absurd and a joke as it deserves.

So Buck and McMahon–two candidates who would seem to fit the term “ideological insurgents”–whip their establishment opposition. Yet The Politico says it’s a bad night for “ideological insurgents.”

I might add that here in TN in 1994 Fred Thompson & Bill Frist won their 1st political races when they run for the US senate. Buck-Angle-Paul are certainly not “raw” ditto for Linda M. in CT but they are not seasoned grisley political veterans.

Its strictly going to come down to people in NV & CO. Do they want to knock on doors-wave signs-talk to friends & neighbors about Buck & Angle. Its time to put up because they got their very conservative candidate-anti establishment too and if they don’t work hard they lose. I might add that the GOP establishment has fallen in line behind Angle in NV-Paul in KY and will be behind Buck in CO.

I might add that people interested in electing movement conservatives like Buck and Angle need to pull out that credit card or check book. If 50,000 people send Buck-fifty dollars he will be well funded without one PAC or one big dollar donor. So do it-you have no excuse.
