It is always a tough thing for candidates to do, but sometimes it is necessary.
Dan Maes is running a terrible campaign terribly underfunded in Colorado. He has the establishment Republicans and most of the grassroots doing something no one thought was possible — rallying to Tom Tancredo.
The latest polling in Colorado has Maes at 15%, behind Tancredo and Hickenlooper, the Democrat.
Maes cannot win. There is no way he can make up the ground. There is no money for him to make up the ground.
It is not just improbable. It is impossible.
For the sake of all that is at stake, Dan Maes must drop out. It is not pleasant. It is not face saving at this point. But Dan Maes must go for Colorado to have even a chance of flipping the Governor’s Mansion out of the hands of the Democrats.

What a voice Tancredo will be in the NGA. It’s time for a new direction and the liberals can “keep the change”. Tancredo’s voice needs to be heard nationally. I so miss him in Congress as he was a voice for the voiceless. Plus, he’s not a RINO. What is going to happen to the GOP? Will they still promote amnesty?

raider (Diary) Thursday, September 30th at 9:23AM EDT (link)for illegal aliens is what Hickenlooper supports whether he admits or not.
While Tancredo was calling for the enforcement of immigration laws, Hickenlooper was busy being a co-owner of a restaurant that employed an illegal alien, Raul Gomez-Garcia, who shot and killed a Denver Police Department detective, Donnie Young, who was working off duty and in uniform, at a baptismal celebration. Detective Young was shot twice in the back and once in the head.
Hickenlooper has certainly been a supporter of illegal aliens while mayor. If immigration laws were enforced, Detective Young would be alive. Tom Tancredo has always supported the enforcement of immigration laws.
Himtngal, it is unfortunate that Dan Maes did not tell the truth about his alleged work with the KBI. I’m not sure why he chose to create such a ridiculous untruth concerning that episode.

I don't see the logic here in this argument
civil truth (Diary) Wednesday, September 29th at 1:54PM EDT (link)…if you’re arguing that the Republicans should then support the 3rd party candidate, Tancredo.
1) Tancredo can’t win a 2-way race by all reports.
2) If Maes gets less than 10%, the Republicans lose their position at the top of the ballot (which will adversely affect Republican candidates for years to come) – according to other commenters yesterday
3) Most importantly, this undermines the entire rationale for RedState opposing the other 3rd party candidates (and write-ins) who lost in the primary.
RedState has stated most clearly that we support the winners of Republican primaries in the general elections, barring extraordinary circumstances. Being third in a 3-way race does not constitute such a circumstance.
Rather it seems to be putting expediency above principle, which is exactly the same argument that the “moderates” make in advancing their candidates’ third party runs: that the Republican nominee can’t win.
* * * * * * * * * * * *
Now it would be different if the Republican party could replace Maes with another or stronger candidate. In that case there no violation of policy, and you have a good argument for Maes to drop out for the good of the party.
However, doesn’t appear to be what you are arguing here.
(And apparently, according to earlier comments, Maes can’t be replaced at this late date.)
Sometimes you’ve just got to admit you have a probably lost race and try to salvage what you can – which here is the very tangible benefit or maintaining ballot position

To expand on my Maes comment (kowalski)
civil truth (Diary) Wednesday, September 29th at 2:34PM EDT (link)3a) This argument fails even on expediency grounds, because as mentioned as #1, Tancredo can’t win a 2-person race.
4) Advocating this on the RedState front page will simply encourage future malcontents to run third-party races out of egotism or malice that will kill the chances of multiple Republican nominees.
Do we really want to aim higher in the general election after shooting ourselves in the foot with the Colorado primary?

Zaber Wednesday, September 29th at 2:05PM EDT (link)I don’t know that Erick was saying that we should go all in for Tancredo – I saw no mention of supporting Tancredo specifically – but if Maes drops out, his supporters will generally wind up going for Tancredo, which serves the end of getting the Governor’s mansion out of the hands of the Dems.
Being 3rd in a 3-way isnt extraordinary, no.. being that far behind and in danger of only bringing in a single digit percentage of votes IS extraordinary.

deano64 (Diary) Wednesday, September 29th at 2:58PM EDT (link)left the door open in my opinion with that last sentence. Given the Maes dropping out scneario scenario who should we support? Should we just stay silent since there is no longer an R in the race or do we support the 3rd party candidate as in NY 23 (I understand it’s a bit different circumstances). Assume you are left with Lickenpooper orTancredo as your 2 choices. What do you do?

I dont think so..
Zaber Wednesday, September 29th at 6:54PM EDT (link)Erick’s very obviously not happy with Tancredo over the 3rd party run, so I don’t think Redstate endorses or provides support.
However, at this point Hickenlooper is leading the race, Tancredo’s a few paces behind, and Maes is on the other side of the track sucking wind. The only thing Maes really does at the thing point is give talking points to the Dems about how badly they skunked the Rs in Colorado.
There’s a chance that Tancredo will put Maes’ support, and that could put him closer or even with Hickenlooper. If he can actually win, while we have a petulant child in charge in Colorado, at least we don’t have a Dem in charge. At this point, its all about hoping for anything possible to flip the seat.

IJB Wednesday, September 29th at 2:43PM EDT (link)I think leftist forces in CO and in the CO media sat on the McInnis story until it would do maximum damage to the CO GOV’s race. Mission accomplished.
The problem here is less that than:
1) The CO GOP “cleared the field” for McInnis, which they should *never* have done (I hope they’ve learned their lesson on that).
And,
2) No one in the CO GOP bothered to properly vet *either* of the two CO GOP candidates.
If they had done #2 a year ago, we wouldn’t be in this mess.

Some Random Thoughts on CO
Iblis (Diary) Wednesday, September 29th at 2:41PM EDT (link)- Tancredo hates Maes. It’s personal.
- Tancredo has said he would drop out if Maes does. Now that Tancredo is polling in the 30′s I doubt he’ll keep that promise. Tom is on a serious ego trip right now.
- Earlier this year Tancredo told the Tea Party we needed to avoid third party candidates as that would just hand the election to the Dems. The Tea Party has since asked Tancredo “WTF” and he has declined to respond.
- Jane Norton is a terrible choice. She was anointed by the establishment to run. Couldn’t answer questions on her own – had to keep asking her campaign manager for help. Refused to meet with the Tea Party. Her entire campaign strategy appears to have been to sit on the nomination and launch attack ads against whoever her opponent turned out to be.
- If Maes did drop out that does not mean we support Tancredo. The R’s would appoint someone else to run on the ticket and we would try to support that candidate (unless it turned out to be the execrable Norton).
- Time is pretty much out. Mail in ballots go out on the 12th, and there must be time to print them in advance.
No - It's Too Late For The CO GOP To Replace The Candidate

Tancredo
drivlikejehu Wednesday, September 29th at 3:44PM EDT (link)Tancredo’s candidacy is at least as legitimate as Hoffman’s was in NY-23. In that case, the Republican mainly suffered from unacceptable ideology, whereas Maes falsified at least part of his biography. Essentially, Maes perpetrated a fraud on Republican primary voters, and there is no reason why he should be allowed to benefit from his wrongdoing.
Tancredo said he would withdraw if the GOP fielded a legitimate candidate. Later he issued a contradictory statement, but in any case, what would have happened is pure speculation- the deadline has passed. I think he would have dropped out, and certainly conservatives would have been right to demand he do so.
But as the situation has unfolded, the only viable option is for Maes to drop out and Republicans to support Tancredo. He’s a conservative who stood up to the GOP establishment while in Congress, and while it would be tough for him to beat Hickenlooper, his chances are certainly greater than Maes’.

scatterometry Thursday, September 30th at 10:34AM EDT (link)While not necessarily a tea party member, I do agree with most of what they do, the exception being their support of Maes. I was not for Maes from the beginning..he just seemed week and un-vetted. Then, the Republican primary has 19,000 people choosing NOT to vote for either candidate, so Maes winds up winning by default. (McInnis probably could NOT have won with the $300k for the plagiarized report, yada-yada). Lately, I hear Maes, on the radio mostly, and he’s really seems to :
a) not accept the reality that he’s WAY behind in ALL polls and truly is now a 3rd party candidate;
b) not care for Conservatives in the state that really want to and SHOULD, especially in this year, win the governorship;
c) have WAY too many questionable dealings, won’t release tax returns, lied about his position as a detective in Kansas, huge fine for campaign finance violations, etc.
I am completely un-enthused and unsupportive of anything he’s doing, and while I was originally upset with Tancredo for sticking his ego into the race, I’ve now come to believe that Maes ego is, the worse of the two, and I do know exactly what I’m getting with a conservative Tancredo.
