I am putting this up the Sunday before the election because in the noise and hubbub after the election it will be drowned out and it is very, very important.
If you are working on one of those challenger campaigns and will come into the House of Representatives and Senate after November 2nd, please read this and get your future Congressman or Senator to read it.
In the next 72 hours, you will be elected to the United States Congress. Suddenly you will find that you have friends you never knew you had. Remember that most of them are not actually your friends.
Many members of Congress will begin whispering sweet nothings in your ear wooing you to vote for them and their rules for the House and Senate. Remember that these same men are the exact same people that the voters rejected in 2006 and again in 2008.
Remember that every poll showing a Republican landslide on Tuesday also shows that the public hates these men.
Introduce yourself to Jeb Hensarling, Jeff Flake, and Jim Jordan. Talk with your fellow freshmen like Tim Huelskamp, Justin Amash, and Jeff Duncan. Those are the people who will become your closest friends who you’ll share a foxhole with when leadership fails you but a battle must be waged.
Remember that some of the people who will come to Congress with you, whether it is Charlie Bass or Steve Stivers or Kevin Yoder or Robert Hurt, etc. are unrepentant tax hixers and some will want to transcend partisanship to work across the aisle. You got elected by being the Party of No. Don’t let the sweet nothings of the Beltway suddenly convince you otherwise.
No is a very powerful word in Washington and it is not used often enough.
Finally, here is the last bit of advice I have for you today. Remember the GOP Pledge? One person — Barry Jackson, who is John Boehner’s Chief of Staff — single handedly had support for traditional marriage stripped from the Pledge and did so after showing a version of the Pledge to conservatives that had it in there to get their support.
One person and a staffer from John Boehner’s office no less.
When you get to Washington you will be told you need a professional staff of lobbyists, careerists, etc. to help guide you. You will be told that “you just don’t understand” or “you are naive” or “the School House Rock version of how a bill becomes a law is too simplified for the real world.”
The people telling you this are the people the voters hate and you should not trust. Largely they will be people in leadership, particularly staffers, who will soon depart for K Street where they hope to profit off their relationship with you. They will work with people like Trent Lott to try to co-opt you.
Fight.
Fight them.
Fight the idea that you must yield to their ways instead of them yielding to your ways. You, after all, have not been driven from power like these men have.
You will have friends you did not know you had who really are your friends when you stand up and fight your leadership. Do not let the Rules Committee be a tool of Leadership. Do not men like Jerry Lewis who helped drive us from power in 2006 remain in power. Do not let leadership have control over committee assignments.
Do not trust Mitch McConnell and Lame-R! Alexander and John Boehner and Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy even though they did so much for you. Remember, as much as they did for you, you are more important to them than they are to you. But for you, they would still be in the minority.
Do not trust the leadership’s staff. They view many of you as problems and potential disasters despite that you will vote more reliably Republican than their preferred candidates and pets.
You have it within you and with the word “No” to prevent the Republicans from going back to the ways that got them removed from office in 2006. Read this to find four easy ways to fix things once you get up there.
If you fight them you will be rewarded. If you succumb, the tea party will come for you in just a few short years.

cactusjack Sunday, October 31st at 10:15AM EST (link)There is an apochryphal story (meaning, may be true, may not, I can’t find the source now but heard it) told from the days after the 1994 House takeover. The Dem house staffer and Rep house staffer meet to discuss logistics and officing arrangments for the new incoming house members. They realize one of the Reps will be moving into a large, leadership-office formerly reserved for the Dem. The interior, furniture and drapes will need to be re-done. The Dem staffer says to the Rep staffer as they part, “OK, have your congressman call my congressman.” The Rep staffer pauses a few seconds and says “Umm…no…..have your congressman call my congressman.” Something to ponder.
Make that, "The Tea Party will come for you next year".

mrscribbler Sunday, October 31st at 11:05AM EST (link)…IMO, the most important thing for the newbies to remember is this: Don’t get comfortable! Don’t let all the perks and privileges you will receive as a new member of this faux “royalty” class turn your head and convince you that you “deserve” those taxpayer-funded “fact-finding” trips to Aruba and your own private jet.
You are there to work for us. In that sense, you are like a drugstore clerk. Take pride in your convictions and service, but don’t get arrogant and start thinking you’re somehow special. And don’t let other hacks who have fallen victim to the D.C. Disease sway you.
Do right, and you can stay as long as you want. Forget why you were sent there and who sent you there, and start packing.
This is only the first battle, the war is not yet won.

When the media won’t listen and your words go unheard, we’re here. The hated “TEA Party” goers, the phone bankers. People will pull over to the side of the road on a Tweet from you (literally) and start calling whoever we need to.
Also, there are plenty of “dumb bloggers” who do a lot of research, and can be your “invisible staffers” if you just keep your eyes on places like RedState; not just the front page, but the Recommended Diaries also.
Malkin, Riehl, Ace, Morrissey, too many to name live to make or break candidates, watch their sites; do it yourself, don’t just send a staffer. You’ll always be traveling, you have time.
The way the Dems use press releases, you need to add an email blast to all the bloggers. Use Twitter and hash tags the way the left uses networks and microphone flags. Give us links to bills with important parts highlighted. Post them here and on Google Docs.
Most important, don’t forget to pray (if so inclined). I know from personal experience that the power of prayer is real; there is a God, there is ONE God, and whatever the left and other skeptics say, that God is real.
Now, hit the ground running!

It sums up, and BRILLIANTLY states EXACTLY and SPECIFICALLY what you will be up against in the Old Guard GOP clubs you will be walking into.
This post also specifically states the EXACT consequences for ignoring what the American people want.
The path to demonstrate this level of integrity WILL BE HARD. It may even be brutal at times. You can accomplish it though if you take a stand and DONT listen to the Old Guard GOP or the State Run Media lies.
Every Old Guard GOP, all the media (to include some supposed “conservatives), and certainly all the Obama Socialist Party Reps. may be “screaming and ranting” that you can’t take a stand like this. DON’T LISTEN.
Again, if you keep your word, we will continue to empower you. If you don’t you will be thrown out with those in the GOP who have chosen to empower the progressive left instead of empowering the American people.

When these fresh faces burst onto the scene, many pushed their issues out there and weren’t afraid to say things like No Amnesty and Repeal Healthcare. Then the “handlers” got a hold of them and I’m hard pressed to find one that will bring these out in the forefront now. They’ll mention healthcare and a secure the borders in ads, but they’re not yelling out no amnesty and repeal like they did before. Its like the message is weakening
Now, its all about how bad Pelosi, Reid and Obama are. Anyone can say they’re an R. Its takes a principled person to declare they’re a conservative and make the distinction between the two.

Electoral victories are futile unless you clean up the mess and rid d.c. of the pests that lurk in the shadow party that inhabit d.o.j., the state dept., and the intelligence agencies, who will work against you behind the scenes, and leave knife marks in your back. Clinton and his democrat controlled congress (@ the beginning) knew this, he filled those entities w/his people, they did a job on”W”, (because he didn’t clean house) and then went on to fill the obama administration and it’s periphery in large numbers. They will also have to learn and quickly, that the state-run, news and entertainment, the opposition, from 1600 penn. ave. on down, their aids, assistants, constituants, will always hate you, So, bending and contorting your views and ideals for good party invites, choice seats on Air Force one, and favorable press for “reaching across the aisle”, is folly. Totally Agree, But
rsexteriors (Diary) Sunday, October 31st at 5:24PM EST (link)“We The People” also have a big responsibility. If we go out and vote on Tuesday and then think our job is done, like most American’s have in the past, then these new Congressmen and Senators can NOT possibly succeed.
They are being sent to the front lines, but just like any combat military unit they need Support, logisitics and someone to cover their flank.
“We” need to realize that if this countries financial situation is going to be fixed then EVERYONE is going to feel the pain. ENTITLEMENTS and BENEFITS and PROGRAMS have to be cut and many destroyed.
If we start to whine and complain when the cuts start to affect our lives or jobs and demand that only cuts be made that affect “OTHERS” then these new Politicians WILL NOT do anything about the problems.
They need to know that we SUPPORT them and are willing to HELP them and are willing to SUCK IT UP when it comes to sharing the pain and that we will still re-elect them if they are doing the right things even if it hurt us personally.
I am skeptical because many of the last few generations have not had to, or refused to, sacrifice for their Country. The reason we are in this situation is because “We the People” have continued to vote for and re-elect politicians that BRING HOME THE PORK and provide us unsustainable benefits.
Have not doubt that the Democrats and Media are just waiting to assail these new politicians and call them every name in the book and report that they want to take the old peoples benifits and the lazy peoples welfare and that they HATE kids, etc etc etc.
Anyone who thinks that just voting these new people in will fix the problem is not being realistic. It will take several election cycles and this countries problems will get worse, much worse, before it gets better.

Enumerated Powers Act
boldliberty (Diary) Sunday, October 31st at 6:17PM EST (link)One of the first orders of business should be to pass the Enumerated Powers Act (yeah, the one which has failed to even make it out of committee for eight straight congresses, I think). Every item of legislation would need to articulate the specific section of the U.S. Constitution that authorizes their action. This would send a clear signal that it’s no longer business as usual. Contact your congressmen and demand it!

alreadyexists Sunday, October 31st at 7:28PM EST (link)We can and should assume that some members of the Republican leadership (as well as some current and new members of the Republican caucus) will betray the Tea Party objectives of smaller, less intrusive government. As this treachery unfolds in the days, weeks, and months ahead, it is incumbent on us to rally and respond promptly. The most effective response will be to immediate begin a primary challenge or third party candidacy in the member’s district or state. Under the auspicious of the Tea Party banner, we should declare an intent to unseat the offending member of Congress, begin a nominating process, start fund raising, and publicly declare the reasons for this action. A lot of Blue Dog Democrats will learn this hard lesson in a few days. There is no reason that big government Republicans should be exempt from this corrective action.

These guys are liars, especially the first two. It is so funny to witness how John McCain has suddenly discovered Border Security and Budget Cuts when he has been on the complete opposite side of those issues for years.

It's best to be informed
katesmith (Diary) Monday, November 1st at 2:53AM EST (link)If in fact the GOP has a new majority it will be in spite of efforts of some who are already there. According to what I read, these guys have learned nothing and have no plans to do so. Being polite and slapping guys on the back is nice, but it’s more important to be informed. I recall Rush saying in 1994 (and whatever happens, this year is much bigger as our country has been lost), “Lead, follow, or get out of the way, because we’re coming through.” Of course he was addressing the democrats at the time, but it’s the same idea. Rush Limbaugh probably was more responsible for that year than the usual character whose name you hear.

Watch the staffers...
horsesense Monday, November 1st at 12:48PM EST (link)As the first comment to this shows, the staffers have the real power. The so-called professional staffers don’t leave when “their” senator or representative leaves, they just move to another member or if they’ve earned sufficient “respect”, they can gain appointments to the permanent positions on the various committees. The whisperers will tell the freshmen they can’t possibly succeed without the pros on their staff—that it is the only way to gain influence–that they, the whisperers, will make sure the new folks get some real good ones so they get a good start. Given that there’s far too much to keep up with for any member of Congress, never mind the getting started challenges the newbies have, they will have to have help. So, my advice is to look outside. Look at the smart people who helped you with the issues as you were campaigning, or on your own learning about how messed up the country’s policies are, and take them. Avoid the long-time professional staffers like the plague–because they are the plague, and you will be infected despite your very best efforts. They will be writing your legislation, crafting your questions for hearings, preparing your background papers to enable you to get ready for debates as quickly as possible. How they say it, what they write, becomes YOUR words, like it or not. So, control them up front by hiring those you can trust.
$50 Billion makes no difference?
oldpedler Monday, November 1st at 2:30PM EST (link)David Stockman tells us on 60 minutes that cutting $50 Billion will not help the deficit, he is correct. However, there must be a starting point. To throw up our hands and say we must raise taxes is ridiculous. $50 and $50 and $50 Billion, etc., etc. CAN be enough if our Representatives are truly interested in controlling costs. We have to start somewhere.

Don't overreach--but take everything in your reach
kenchely Monday, November 1st at 3:47PM EST (link)When the new congress arrives, they should not imagine that people are sufficiently bothered by spending that they want their own goodie–whatever it is–cut. The only way that people will go along with that is if they see everyone else taking a cut. So every department has to have its budget cut. Those things that are straight-out boondoggles have to go.
Understand that the news media will paint them as Scrooges. The comedians will portray them as buffoons. The new Congress will have to have people sufficiently cogent to avoid being lampooned into ineffectiveness the way Saturday Night Live destroyed Sarah Palin as a credible force. (Don’t kid yourselves, conservatives–Sarah Palin will never be elected tto anything again, at least outside Alaska. She has unfavorables up in the mid-50′s. Only movement conservatives like her.)
I would be looking at people like Marco Rubio and Allen West to be the face of this new freshman class.

O' Donnell losing might be a tragedy
eeisok (Diary) Wednesday, November 3rd at 4:15AM EST (link)But is it really unexpected? She lost by 17%; that’s not even close.
As the article states, it’s a mixed blessing that Angle/O’Donnell lost.
I personally think that O’Donnell are both great nominees: not only does it show more strong conservative women, but it puts the fear of the Tea Party into the hearts of GOP Establishment. They can’t just brush off the Tea Party or placate them.
GOP Establishment will HAVE to fold Tea Party ideology into their framework; I think we can all agree on that.

Where does the article attack Republicans?
eeisok (Diary) Wednesday, November 3rd at 4:19AM EST (link)I’ll read it again, but I didn’t see that.
It states that Angle/O’Donnell losing will be a good thing for the GOP as a whole because by losing the Senate, Democrats can’t paint “Congress” as “Republican”. They COULD do that in 1996 and 1998 vs. Clinton. In the same manner, it was good that Fiorina lost.
After all, Republicans will still be able to block Obama’s legislation in the House with or without the Senate. Angle/O’Donnell winning, what would that have changed? You still need 60 Senators to pass nearly anything, and you’d always have GOP defectors (like the Maine sisters).
The Tea Party lost in Angle/O’Donnell, but WON in Rubio and Rand. Like I said, GOP Establishment is formally on notice.
I don't care if it will be good or not
Christine (Diary) Wednesday, November 3rd at 6:23AM EST (link)A loss is a loss and quit spinning. You are playing the media/democrat game where they will say since we didn’t get the senate and 70+ House seats we really didn’t win anything.
If the Establishment had backed O’Donnell instead of spinning Castle’s loss and playing “take my ball and go home”, she might well be the Senator-elect, and we’d get to see how candidates like her fare in the “real world” of Congress. It would have been FAR BETTER than seeing her lose.
I am not saying I expected her to win…only that it would have been BETTER if she won than if she lost.
The primary process is FLAWED. Two states should not decide our candidate.

Misconstruing the article
eeisok (Diary) Wednesday, November 3rd at 6:47AM EST (link)I think we absolutely kicked azz! 65 House seats, if we’re smart should be able to hold that for YEARS. Along with the Governorships, it was a great night.
There ARE certain benefits to winning the Senate. GOP could have potentially passed popular legislation to see Obama veto it.
But in the Senate, Republicans are much more moderate. I mean, John McCain is STILL in the Senate.
Not only that, even if we had 51 Senators then Dems could have filibustered us just like we with them.
Maybe we could have passed some items via reconciliation, but I’m not sure we’d have the votes for that (esp. since we just rightly complained that Obamacare was passed via reconciliation).
So in reality, how much effect will it be in terms of legislation that we have 49 vs. 51 Senators? Not much.
If Obama wants a legislative success, he has to ask the GOP House first (nicely). Otherwise he gets nothing. Then if the GOP agrees they will get Senators on board. Obama can’t get the Senate first, because in the Senate he’ll have to have a bipartisan bill by nature of the Senate. Not so in the House.
The UPSIDE to not winning the Senate is that Republicans don’t control “Congress”. We control the House. DEMOCRATS control the Senate. This muddies the message to voters that “Republicans in Congress are not cooperating”.
The case was easy to make in 1996/1998: GOP controlled Congress, so it was GOP Congress vs. Clinton. Now they can’t say that because we don’t control the Senate.
I agree with the article that that more than makes up for the loss of actual votes in the Senate. In fact it’s a very good position for Republicans to be in.
the article is not far off
kyle8 (Diary) Wednesday, November 3rd at 6:50AM EST (link)Starting today, the Obama team will be running against the republican congress. What we have to do is keep explaining our message of smaller government and fiscal sanity.
We now have a sufficient number to block the most odious things that the dems want to do. However, if the Republicans in the house are creative, they can pass all sorts of bills that reduce spending and promote economic growth and DARE the democrats to vote against them.
That is how you expand your majority in the next elections.
“Nothing works like freedom, Nothing succeeds like liberty”

Exactly.
eeisok (Diary) Wednesday, November 3rd at 7:06AM EST (link)Like I just posted, ALL of the liberal legislation came from the HOUSE. Reid watered down a bunch of stuff. Public option PASSED in the House. So did cap and trade. Both failed in the Senate. Why?
Senate is more moderate (in public anyway) because Senators serve an entire state. You can gerrymander a district like Pelosi’s so it’s all lib; you can’t do that for a state.
The House is more partisan, and we’ll be able to initiate lots of conservative legislation. But now that we did NOT win the Senate, we can try and cajole the DEMOCRATIC Senate to go along. We can yell and scream at Harry Reid.
But imagine how much MORE difficult it would have been if Boehner is screaming at McConnell?
But in terms of actual effect, 49 GOP Senators is not THAT much worse that having 51. So we’ll need to get 11 Dem Senators. We still needed to get 9 Dems if we had 51 GOP Senators to overcome filibuster.
So now that we have the opposite party in the Senate:
1 We can’t be tarred as “the GOP Congress”
2 We can attack the Senate and Obama for not passing our legislation
So there is actual CONSIDERABLE benefit for NOT winning the Senate, given that we won the House by so much.
the article is not far off
