Will The House GOP Break Apart the GOP-Tea Party Coalition

It is undisputed that the Tea Party Movement helped drive the renewed Republican momentum this past year. But for that energy, the Republicans would not have seen the gains they saw. The exit polls reflect that data.

So now the House Republicans have some crucial decisions to make. They, unlike the Senate GOP, which appears to have learned nothing and forgotten nothing from their 2006 defeat, are going to embrace an earmarks moratorium. Incoming Speaker Boehner, man I love the sound of that, announced the House will definitely have an earmarks moratorium. Mitch McConnell says no way in the Senate.

But an earmarks moratorium is only one sign that the GOP gets it in the House. It is time for some fresh faces.

Jeb Hensarling as Conference Chair is a great start given his conservative bona fides and economics based background. I am hearing today that MIchelle Bachmann wants that too, but I hope she might be pursued to go for Vice-Chair and tag team with Hensarling. Having Rep. Bachmann in that position over Cathy McZero Rogers would be a wonderful thing.

A good fit at Policy would be Dr. Tom Price. Given that healthcare helped elect Republicans, having a doctor in that position over Connie Mack, whose wife voted for Cap & Trade, would be a good sign the GOP is serious about getting us out of the Obamacare hole.

Then there is the matter of the Appropriations Committee. Jerry Lewis is term limited. They should give him no waiver and consider instead someone like Jack Kingston. The alternative would probably be someone like Harold Rogers of Kentucky, who would not, given his record, be a good shift right from Lewis. Likewise, Kingston is the only man on the committee who, as an Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman, delivered a balanced budget, or one in surplus.

But that’s not enough. With new seats open, tea party backed members like Jeff Flake, Tom Graves, and others should have seats on the Appropriations Committee.

Then, of course, there is the House Energy and Commerce Committee. I do not believe in Committee waivers, which means Joe Barton should not be allowed to stick around.

Unfortunately, Fred Upton is lobbying heavily for the seat and that choice would be absolutely atrocious. Upton is a union lackey. As Powerline notes

His voting record leaves no doubt of this. For example, Upton was one of only three Republicans to oppose extending the Bush tax cuts. He also voted with the Democrats in their effort to make future tax cuts harder to pass. And he opposed Republican amendments to the stimulus bill which would have substituted tax cuts for stimulus money. Upton also voted against an amendment to cut $355 billion out of the stimulus legislation.

By the same token, Upton voted in favor of the Democrats’ $409 billion Ominbus Appropriations Act of 2009, which increased federal spending by 8.4 percent and gave President Obama $19 billion more than he had requested. Twenty Democrats voted against this Act, but (as Hubert Humphrey might have said) not Congressman Upton.

If a man like Upton becomes Chairman, it will be a clear sign that the House GOP is all bluster.

Lastly, the new House leaders need to make themselves less powerful. A willingness to give up power will be a positive sign.

…some of the same sentiments, Erick.

If the goal of the Tea Party movement is in fact a “hostile takeover of the Republican Party,” and not a third party – which would be an absolute disaster, IMO – then those members of the House who were elected with Tea Party support, energy and manpower need to be in these leadership positions to the greatest degree possible.

If this does not happen and the same go-along-to-get-along group of RINOs and empire builders retains control of all the senior positions within the House Republican caucus, the result will be disillusionment and disgust with House Republicans, leading to people throwing up their hands in disgust and walking away from the process they so began to fundamentally change on Nov. 2nd. That will only embolden our Marxist opponents and assure their victory in 2012.

It IS that simple – and time is running out on America if we don’t realize that fact..

  • smitch61

That a couple of 600K rallies on capitol hill will not cure. I believe they think we are going to go away now that they have been elected. It will only intensify from here.

  • klesb

The GOP. By their decisions, you shall know them.

And, the Tea Party will make its judgments. We, the People, will have a majority conservative (Constitutional) political party that represents the majority of voters, or we will join an existing conservative party (like the Constitution Party) by mid-year!

Enough of this “3rd Parties can’t win” B.S. It will be true only for the GOP if it doesn’t understand the Tea Party message! And, it is the new 3rd Party!

  • SoFiMil

(In answer to Erick’s question.) It’s the other way around. The Tea Party has only just begun, and is taking back the Republican Party to its Reagan roots. If the RINOs don’t like it, tough.

  • stephaniet

I’m watching you. All of you. Very. Very. Closely. Get it right this time, or go home the first time you’re up for reelection. You have an enormous task–monumental!–standing in front of you. Don’t fail. Could be you were born for this, so get to work the minute you show up at your new office.

And remember, I can write letters, and I can vote. If you don’t get it right, you’ll be hearing from me. In the meantime, though, I will pray that you “new guys” will be granted the wisdom necessary to do your jobs in the best way possible.

  • mitchsf

We will outlast them, however long it takes. We will work to stop the damage now and reverse as much as possible, and with every election cycle, progress will be made. Hopefully real change will come quickly, but whatever happens we are not going away.

  • dudette

but certainly worried about entrenched seniority who want the committee chairs. No Jerry Lewis and the rest of the RINOs. Of course I know they are not going to give chairmanships to new reps, but reward those incumbent conservatives who stand firmly w/tea party values and give the committee chairs to them.

  • HaroldHutchison

Joe Barton would be a good Energy and Commerce chair, or at least better than Upton. Yet because of an arbitrary limit on how long he can serve, we could be stuck.

I’d say grant the waiver, and find a better spot for Upton.

  • baldbarian

But this election and the TeaParties.(not one).. will have a heavy say in what happens in the GOP or we will have a go at a 3rd party. GOP better get on board. A 3rd party will split the vote and elect some DimLibs in the first go around but this is a generational shift and must seen in that light. The OldDyingMedia cannot keep calling 1/3 of the country racists, whack jobs without hastening their demise. A TeaParty will challenge the GOP if things don’t improve. No more McCain candidates for Pres. No more DimLibLite GOP Congress.. IMO.

  • southernpatriots

I knew Erik wrote this, without looking. It is insightful and imploring the House Rs to make some changes from the old guard and establishment to the more conservative and focused members. A good suggestion. How to get this to the members to alert them to the situation. Once the chairmen (persons?) are established, there won’t be much to do about it for a long time. Waivers? no waivers! I sure would like to see some new faces and some dynamic chairmanships. I am one that would like some hearings on such things as the Black Panther voter intimidation, US Justice wanting only black defendants, etc.; and other hearings. Follow the evidence wherever it goes, and don’t be a hack. Be very partisan, but not a hack. Bi-partisan is another name for Rs and conservatives expected to come over the Dem /leftist side and the progressives and leftists not coming over the conservative side. That is not bi-partisan any more than the main stream media is unbiased.

    of House Republicans.

They don’t need to be timid.

In the Senate, Richard Lugar and Orrin Hatch are prime targets to be primaried.

    Primary Tartets
    Richard Lugar of Indiana
    Orrin Hatch of Utah
    Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas

I wouldn’t want to represent those states
    Olympia Snowe of Maine
    Scott Brown of Massachusetts

I’m not familiar enough with these to comment
    Jon Kyl of Arizona
    Roger Wicker of Mississippi
    Bob Corker of Tennessee
    John Barrasso of Wyoming
    John Ensign of Nevada

And that’s it. 10 Republicans up for reelection versus 21 Dems and 2 Independents.

    United States Senate elections, 2012

  • chbroussard

they cannot fire the electorate…but we can and will fire them. So be wise and use this very temporary power that WE have bestowed upon you wisely. If not, you will.. be.. fired.

    Here’s a bit from today’s daily caller..

“The trick for Republicans is to keep Bachmann ? the Minnesota Republican viewed by many in leadership as an unserious and unhelpful spokesman for the party ? away from an elevated platform that many in the party feel would hinder or harm the GOP, ”

Hey, if they’re not going to put someone like MB in a top slot now do you really think they are going to give something meaningful a couple years down the road to Benishek,Duffy or Ribble?

Hensarling is a very qualified conservative. True. What’s wrong with making him vice chair? They owe the tea party more than a vice chair secretary/treasurer every other thursday slot. I kow Demint has (last count) 4 committees he’s on, can he take on another one?

The establishment is all upset about the senate. Too bad. Instead of saying “you cost us”, they should say “we thank you” to tea partiers. They’re getting about as arrogant as you know who.

“Incoming Speaker Boehner, man I love the sound of that, announced the House will definitely have an earmarks moratorium. Mitch McConnell says no way in the Senate.”

What happens to earmarks in the conference committee? Who wins?

  • vamoose

To what does GOP leadership ascribe the enthusiasm gap if not tea partiers? Surely not the the deflating rhetoric of Mitch McConnell, nor the kiss of death endorsements of John McCain. Tea party enthusiasm was also the torch the ignited record state and local GOP gains. GOP leadership needs to embrace the tea party movement and it should be reflected by filling open leadership positions with those who have held the door open for the tea party in the halls of congress.

Saw him last night on Greta I believe, and while he tried to sound like he gets it, he failed pretty badly IMHO. Two things jumped out at me:
    1. He peppered his comments with ‘reach across the isle’ and ‘bipartisan’ repeatedly – it was like he just could not wait to work with the D’s on something – anything!
    2. He just could not bring himself to say that the entire health care bill was bad – instead he used the weasel language of some of it is good and some is bad and we need to remove the bad and work with the D’s (see point 1) on improving the good, etc.
Its like he just doesn’t get the fact that, in its current incarnation, there is a gap between us and the D party that simply can not be crossed – the ideologies are simply too fundamentally opposed for us to work with them or to use any of their legislation – such as healthcare – as the foundation on which we build any legislative houses.
Unfortunately, he saw what happened to his like-minded compadre, so I am sure he is probably working behind the scenes to ensure he survives the primary in 2012. Hopefully those individuals in Utah who helped remove one non-conservative Senator are currently working behind the scenes as well to remove the other.

Some of these newly elected Reps and Sens better not forget who helped them get into or back into office. The days of a good-ole-boy career politician Country Club are over and the Tea Party Groups are sounding the death-knell. We The People are watching everything that goes on. Backdoor deals with the Dems and Mr Obama will count toward you removal from office. Better candidates are being sought and groomed and they are not all lawyers. We are heading back to what our forefathers intended and intend on dumping these pseudo-constitutional laws. We have too much government and too many laws a regulations that are hampering business and productivity. We need to throw out the Socialists and Marxists and PROGRESSIVES in all levels of government. It is time that this garbage stopped and those who are not on the bandwagon are fair game. Think before you act, your political career could be in the balance.

  • jimmyneutron

of voting for Michelle every time she has run, I am hoping against hope that she begins to assume leadership positions. That whole ‘unserious’ commentary is simply the typical media attempt to define someone irrespective of reality – Michelle is a very serious and intelligent person.
Personally I feel that we need individuals who speak the language of a constitutional republic in leadership positions so that more Americans can hear that language and come to understand that those are the ideas that really will help reduce the size and scope (and hence the cost) of the federal government!

  • Bill S

This is a conservative and GOP site. 3rd party shilling is not allowed.

  • cam1

in the House is John Boehner. On Brett Bair’s show last evening, he refused to say that he would end earmarks. If the GOP would put itself in a position to end earmarks, it will put Obama in a box.

Pressure needs to be kept on Boehner every day to hold true to REAL conservative principles, because he is an eel.

  • mirac777

I was amazed at how you noticed Jeff Flake. I got to know Jeff from watching a battle on spending in the house last year. Here was Flake all by himself,. denouncing every single earmark one by one. The old guard ridiculed him and laughed at him, yet he kept on plugging away. Murtha told Flake he just didn’t know how things were done up there on the Hill, blah blah blah. I am in Fl, yet tried to call attention to this patriot crusader in AZ at the time to no avail.

I agree with Erick, I want Flake on the appropriations committee. He has proven himself to be worthy of a stronger position to protect the American people. As far as the manufactured divide between GOP andTeaParty, it is just that manufactured br propagandists wanting them to fail. Yes the “Old Guard” in the Senate is on notice. The old way of the Murthas of the Congess, are finished. It is a new era. It will have bumps in the road, but the central theme is less gov’t, less Socialism hiding behind the Dem party name, and accountability!
Thank you Erick for Redstate, where I have started my day since it was born. I wasn’t politically involved, like many, until this nasty progressivism damn near collapsed America. That is something I am deeply disapointed in myself about. Not anymore. I am awake and now we have a boatload of work to do.That starts with ironing out the New Coalition Government , easing out the old guard GOPers with progressive tendacies, and installing a powerhouse conservative machine that will be forever vigilant in protecting America and her Patriots!

  • renny

Clinton won twice with 43% of the vote because Perot took 12% in 1992 and 9% in 1996, very good showings for a third party candidate. And defeat for Bush I and Bob Dole.

Sometimes parties collapse and become another identity, as the Whigs fell over the question of slavery in the expanded territories in the 1850s and then re-emerged in 1854 as the Republican Party, an anti-slavery party.

I doubt with today’s communications, in-place structure, and significant membership that today’s GOP is going to disintegrate and yield to a “Tea Party” official pol. group.

When the tea partiers allied with the Reps., they got ballot space on every local, state, and fed. election roster, something “outside” parties need to take time, lawyers, and money to do from district to district and state to state, which is why Nader, for instance, had an impact on CA races to a degree because the state acknowledges a Green Party, but he had negligible impact over all because he did not press for a Green Party line in every polling booth.

A “party” we should work to de-legitimize is the Working Families Party (WFP) that is a creature of ACORN and union buddyship. In most states, if a party does not garner 10% of the vote, they get stricken from the line in the next election.

It was a surprise to me that in some NJ district, “outliers” ran on a “Tea Party” ticket–like in the Runyan-Adler 3rd district race–when there is no statewide recognition of a Tea Party per se. Since Adler stands accused of “creating” such a candidate to siphon Rep. votes in the district and an investigation is looking into fraud, maybe such an anomaly won’t happen again, soon.

  • Jack_Savage

…has given Etheridge an opening to steal the election by siphoning votes from Ellmers, which is absolutely all they are good for. I swear I will spit on the next car I see that has a libertarian bumper sticker.

  • mirac777

“Hostile takeover” statement in any form here. The teaparty will be the new GOP> BOTH will be true to conservative ideology, with no progressive Rinos involved. We are looking at the NEW GOP, I sometimes call it the TotalTeaParty. After all it is the people speaking and speaking loudly. Isnt the goal to have a gov’t that abides by our constitution and laws? Groups have to evolve, and to use a Beck Phrase here, we the people have “Nudged” the GOP to get back to it’s conservative roots. It will still be called the GOP. And it will listen to the people, which it got away from for decades. The Teaparty is the people, the true American voice. The GOP has been taught a lesson that goes back to our founding fathers. We shall have a gov’t OF the People, BY the people, and FOR the people, period. Just how we achieve this again will be interesting, to say the least. One thing that is evident: Its a new beginning, based on old principles, and it is wonderful to be a part of.

    God Bless America.

  • mirac777

The truth shall set us free. One truth soon to be exposed, is who is going to bat for the people of America, and who is gunning for more wasteful earmarks to keep their jobs. This will expose those who need to be both primaried and outed in 2012. We will be watching and reporting. we will be vigilant and informed. They can’t escape those facts, no matter how many decades they have been entrenched up on the Hill.

  • dmccracken

Even 1 cycle where Democrats get in due to a 3rd party can be disastrous. Also, it seems to me that it is far better and probably somewhat easier to reach the goal by pursuing the hostile takeover of the Republican party. There you have an existing party apparatus, a spot on the ballots in every district (as has been pointed out already), and a recognizable name for those that are not “politically aware” to see.

Given that in any election you will probably get 40% voting Democrat and 40% voting Republican just because that’s what their “family has always voted”,with a 20% swing vote (except in times such as this, of course, when the swing vote grows due to massive excesses by the government, but I speak of historical numbers) you have to be recognizable because we still are cursed by the apathetic in this country, and you do need them to win elections.

A third party would give the libs the opening to come back and finish their destruction. The only answer is to reform from within.

This victory is the template for taking the senate and white house in 2012 in addition to expanding a command of the house.
People must be mindful the statism we see has been imposed on Americans over the past century.
People should be prepared for a process of change which will take years and several election cycles.
This is the process by which the progressive politics of the last century were foisted on a passive public.

  • scorpio0679

The nudging was happening from 2004 onward with massive protests to amnesty, entitlement expansion, and “compassionate conservatism” in general.

There was nothing gentle about this election. It was a massive SHOVE.

I am very optimistic that the House gets it and I think Erick is correct to demand a changing of the guard in committee chairs and assignments. I think the Senate needs some tea party love in this next election cycle, with an emphasis on GOP primaries.

  • scorpio0679

The mistake of going third party has already been made, and as Beck says, if we don’t learn from the past we will keep repeating the mistakes in the future.

Third party talk is nonsense. Even if the GOP doesn’t “get it” in this cycle, we identify, target, and destroy those who stand in our way next cycle. The GOP is OUR party, and it will represent the will of the people and defend the Constitution.

We shouldn’t waver in that goal — talk of third parties is nonsense. Keep focused and keep notes.

Some of the senators mentioned are as conservative as you could elect from their states, or are such institutions that you won’t beat them.

Scott Brown has to be supported firmly. He’s the first right-of-center senator the state has had since Leverett Saltonstall, whose last term ended in 1966. If you somehow torpedo him, you’re not going to get a moderate Democrat–you’ll get another leftie fanatic. Similarly, whom are you going to replace Olympia Snowe with? Chellie Pingree? Let Paul LePage start making his imprint on the state and get the state used to a conservative Republican in office. If he’s a good governor, other conservatives will do well after him; look at the legacy of Tommy Thompson in Wisconsin.

Orrin Hatch has been a conservative at times when it was very hard to be a conservative. He’s also someone who can get things done. You’re not going to get anyone much more conservative than he is. He’s not the same as Bennett. Leave him alone. He’s the guy who may be able to put together coalitions big enough to override Obama vetoes.

Kay Bailey Hutchison isn’t awful. Still, her little two-step with the governor’s race didn’t win her any friends. It’s probably Michael Williams’ time. But run the primary on how good Williams is, not on how bad Hutchison is. You DON’T want some Democrat getting in because we cut ourselves to ribbons in a rough primary.

Dick Lugar has gone Washington. He’s become a shield behind whom Democrats claim to be bipartisan. Still, he generally votes right. You don’t want to beat him with someone who then loses. If you can get Mitch Daniels to run for Senate, go for it; he’d be a strong candidate. Maybe Lugar can be encouraged to retire. He’s been there for 36 years. But don’t beat him just to beat him. There was a long time that he served well as a conservative before he started moving left in his last couple of terms. Even now he votes right most of the time. We just told Evan bayh-bayh; don’t give him an encouragement to try to come back.

Kyl, Wicker and Barrasso are very firm conservatives. Ensign is pretty solid, though there’s sort of a truce between him and Reid on each other’s elections–Ensign doesn’t campaign against Reid, and Reid doesn’t campaign against Ensign (the two had a razor-thin race against each other back in 1998, which Reid barely won, before Ensign ran and won in 2000). Corker’s pretty much from the Lamar Alexander wing of the Tennessee GOP. He’s been more conservative in the Senate than anyone expected. Again, we don’t want to open the door for a new Algore or Jim Sasser. Leave him alone; he’s doing better than we thought he would.

Basically, you leave these guys alone unless you are pretty sure you can win in November with your guy. Support Williams against Hutchison and Daniels against Lugar, but don’t back minor-leaguers against these people.

Above all, leave Scott Brown alone! I’m originally from Massachusetts. The year I was born, the GOP had both senate seats from that state. Conservatives wanted to punish the senior senator from the state, Henry Cabot Lodge, for heading Eisenhower’s campaign (they liked Robert Taft), so they backed a young Democratic congressman who had a pretty conservative record in the House. His name was John F. Kennedy, and what followed in Massachusetts politics is history.

Fred Upton is worse than a RINO! Good grief, he is a progressive socialist who has been posing as a Republican long enough to be considered for the Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee!
This is GOP SOP leadership at it’s worst and blatant disregard for “We the People…” Fred Upton should have been fired from any committee after he cast his first Obama-Pelosi-Reid vote and sent home…NOT to the back benches!
The T.E.A. (Taxed Enough Already) Movements do NOT want a 3rd Party nor do we want a ONE PARTY system that has been destroying our country for more than a century!

“We the People…” of the T.E.A. grassroots movements want this Constitutional Conservative Class of Representatives to begin steering the GOP in governance of the people, by the people and for the people.

Please do NOT let it perish or violate your oath of office to serve, protect and defend our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic…If you do “We the People…” will fire you!

No matter what position Rep. Bachmann is given, I’m confident we will not be disappointed. She is the REAL DEAL and it is time for those who are afraid of SMART BEAUTIFUL women to get over it!

come up with is the CONSTITUTIONAL CONSERVATIVE CAUCUS!

I’m happy to hear that she will be there for the new class – the last thing I wanted to hear was when Eric Cantor (I believe) said they would have ‘seasoned staff’ to place in the offices of all new members immediately! Not only is that a poor idea, I am hopeful that the newly elected CONSERVATIVES will recognize it as a wolf in sheep’s clothing and let the leadership know they have their OWN staff – JUST SAY NO to all offers of ‘seasoned’ staff!!!!!!!

We have been part of the tea party movement (NOT ever thinking of a 3rd party) since the first gathering on April 15. However, there are far too many in the msm and even in Congress who would use that ‘label’ to paint a tainted picture of those with conservative values who have been gathering by the hundreds of thousands since Rick Santelli’s Chicago rant. Therefore, Rep. Bachmann’s decision to rename her caucus the Constitutional Conservative Caucus is a good one.

We the People will be paying close attention to those we have elected to office…and if they stray from their conservative values, we will let them know of our concerns immediately!

202.224.3121 is the Congressional Switchboard – let them hear YOU!

It is time for the leaders in Congress to recognize that ALL BILLS that are presented to be voted upon MUST be in accordance with our CONSTITUTION! If the present leaders can’t bring themselves to demand that accountability, then it is time for NEW leaders!

  • capeconservative

leadership positions – perhaps they do know what they are doing, but for some reason I am skeptical about believing them when they say they will HOLD FIRM on the issues that sent CONSERVATIVES to the polls in record numbers.

We do NOT want compromise with a party who has REFUSED for the past four years to even acknowledge there were ideas from ‘the other side’ of the aisle!!!!!!

We DO want TOTAL REPEAL of Obamacare – it is NOT constitutional! We do NOT want 1 page of those 2,700 pages in that bill to stay in effect!!!! NOT ONE!

We DO want every bill offered for a vote to INCLUDE the CONSTITUTIONAL reference for its passage – if it can’t, it won’t get a vote, plain and simple!

We do NOT want earmarks – NOT ONE!

We DO want the current tax rates made permanent – until a Fair Tax can be implemented that would ensure that every person and every entity paid their ‘fair share’ and NO MORE!

We DO want an immediate reduction of 10% ACROSS THE BOARD, through every agency!

We DO want a BALANCED BUDGET bill

We DO want ALL spending trimmed – NO MORE frivolous ‘studies/grants’ to look into the effects of marijuana on the sexual activity of college students…or the sex habits of frogs!

We do NOT want card check

We do NOT want cap & trade

We do NOT want to have world government dictate to the UNITED STATES of AMERICA

We DO want a LIMITED government as prescribed by our founding fathers

Is there a leader in the House & Senate who will PROMISE TO STAY TRUE TO THESE CONSERVATIVE VALUES??????????

It’s time to vote in NEW STRONG LEADERS who will listen to We the People!!!!!
