EDITOR OF REDSTATE

CALL YOUR REPUBLICAN SENATOR NOW: Support Senator Jim DeMint’s Earmark Ban

image

Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) is offering an resolution next Tuesday during the first meeting of Senators serving in the 102nd Congress.  The DeMint Resolution would be a statement that the Senate Republican Conference will not take earmarks for the next two years.  RedState readers could be the difference between this resolution passing or failing.  Consider this your call to action.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kent.) is opposing this measure and whipping his members to beat back the effort by DeMint for a two year earmark moratorium.  McConnell isn’t the only Senator calling other members to oppose this new conference resolution.  Just look at the roster of Republicans on the Senate Appropriations Committee to see members working the phones to defeat this measure.

Here is what I need you to do.  Call your Republican Senator at 202-224-3121and ask him or her if she is going to vote for the DeMint resolution.  If you don’t have a Republican Senator in your state and you want to help, adopt a Senator.  If you want to call one of the new members, look up the phone number on the Senate website and give them a call.

Next, ask for the staffer that handles appropriations.  You sound like an insider if you say: “Can I talk to the LA that handles approps for the Senator?”  This line will not work for campaigns, but will work well for Senators.

Next, ask specifically if the Senator is supporting Senator DeMint’s resolution to ban earmarks for two years for the Senate Republican Conference.  If they dodge, ask for their name and get a specific statement whether they are a Yes, No or Undecided.

Next, log onto RedState and publish a comment to this post with your report.  Who you spoke to.  What they said and any other relevant information.

Here is what we know right now.  Senators who we know are supporting this effort are the Republican cosponsors of the DeMint resolution and they are the following:

  • Senator Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma)
  • Senator Michael Enzi (R-Wyoming)
  • Senator John Ensign (R-Nevada)
  • Senator-Elect Marco Rubio (R-Florida)
  • Senator-Elect Pat Toomey (R-Pennsylvania)
  • Senator-Elect Mike Lee (R-Utah)
  • Senator-Elect Kelly Ayotte (R-New Hampshire)
  • Senator-Elect Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin)
  • Senator-Elect Rand Paul (R-Kentucky)
  • Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas)
  • Senator Richard Burr (R-North Carolina)
  • Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama)
  • Senator Bob Corker (R-Tennessee)

Those are the good guys. Here are the bad guys:

  • Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky)
  • Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee)
  • Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi)
  • Senator-Elect John Hoeven (R-North Dakota)
  • Senator-Elect Rob Portman (R-Ohio)
  • Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins (R-Maine)
  • Senators Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss (R-Georgia)
  • Senator Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina)
  • Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas)
  • Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)
  • Senator-Elect Jerry Moran and Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kansas)
  • Senator Scott Brown (R-Massachusetts)
  • Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch (R-Idaho)
  • Senator David Vitter (R-Louisiana)
  • Senator John Thune (R-South Dakota)
  • Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama)
  • Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Oklahoma)
  • Senator Richard Lugar and Senator-Elect Dan Coats (R-Indiana)
  • Senator-Elect Roy Blunt (R-Missouri)
  • Senator Orin Hatch (R-Utah)

Right now Republican Leadership and Appropriators are bragging that they have this won.  RedState has other plans.  Let’s see if we can win this one for all taxpayers.

    This really upsets me. He basically owned this Senate seat from day one and we never heard from him since. He has never had to be out in the public eye articulating conservatism and I just don’t get good vibes from him. The worst thing of all is that he is from North Dakota! Why are we wasting these seats on those who will not stand with Jim DeMint.

    Everyone is so focused on the debate surrounding blue state Republicans and whether conservatives can win in those states. They are forgetting the fact that we have so many deep red state Republicans who aren’t conservative. We should have two Jim DeMints from every southern and great planes state. Unfortunately, as you can see from this list, we have a lot of work to do.

    I assume McCain, Mr. “No Earmarks (but I vote all the time for regular bills that essentially huge earmarks, like the ‘mandatory voluntary public service for government school kids’ $5.7 B bill)” will support the ban.

    Also called Kyl’s local office and left a message. Of course, as always, the voice mailbox for his D.C. office is full.

    Thank you.

    Can hardly believe these two are from the same state. I like Sessions, but Shelby is a squish.
    Unfortunately, Shelby ran unopposed this year so he was just re-elected. I tried calling his office and they are out of the office today, but I WILL be calling tomorrow.

  • fpete13527

    I just called friends to make multiple calls also.

    The PROGRESSIVE PORKERS list is very enlightening. It’s kind of like the guys on that list are saying we could care less about what the American people think.

    Supporting Senator DeMint’s Earmark Reform Bill
    Posted by Senator Lindsey Graham

    I?m proud of Jim?s leadership on the earmark moratorium issue, and wish we had received more votes last night for this important initiative. I believe a timeout on earmarks would give Congress time to reevaluate the process being used. It also would have sent a signal to the American people that the ?business as usual? approach to earmarks no longer exists.

  • onehutu

    To senator-elect Ron Johnson’s email. It’s from the campaign so will need to do it again when he is in office. I’ve pushed for not two years, but a permanent end to earmarks. He seems like a right thinker, but I am concerned that he could waver once in DC. I like the initiative.

  • partyof1

    I sent her an email. It’ll be intersting to see if she responds on topic, or with a form letter.

    Has anyone confirmed that Cornyn supports the ban?

  • jenniferjmilleresq

    I still wouldn’t be surprised if he votes in secret against the measure that is in conference and I guess that’s why Eric has him listed among the “no’s.” I don’t trust him and I’m planning to tell him that the last time I called a government office was Rep. John Spratt’s office and I urged his vote against healthcare and said he would not be in office if he voted for it. Without a firm confirmation that he will be publicly endorsing Demint’s resolution in conference, I feel exactly the same way about Graham, only he will be primaried.

  • okiejim

    I could be totally wrong, but I believe most Americans are fed up with the manner in which most earmarks end up getting funded. They are usually tacked on to other, totally unrelated, bills and are seldom read by those voting on them.
    Senator Inhofe is correct in saying that without earmarks, the President will have total control over spending. That is not acceptable either.
    Why not place all “earmarks” in one bill for all to review and have input on. If the majority in the House or Senate agree on a particular earmark, it will be approved. If not, tough luck. Better luck next time.
    By controlling earmarks in this manner, our elected representatives will not be able to buy votes with their special projects. The lobbyists will get one chance at selling their projects to their House or Senate member and convince him or her to get it entered on the bill. Opposing lobbyists will have an equal chance to oppose the project.
    Finally, iif the funds requested are for a project that should normally be funded by state and local governments, and are not permitted by the Constitution, they should not be included in the bill without full consent of the House or Senate.
    One thing is sure, this country cannot continue on the current spending track. We elect those persons to do the job expected of them.

    that Perriello will be back in 2012, in some fashion. Hence his good-bye tour of the district. He will never get anywhere, even with his Soros support. He has been so outed as a Marxist in the district, the only people that will vote for him are the UVA staff and students.

    Unfortunately, while Oklahoma has the stellar Tom Coburn, we also have Jim Inhofe — and he is vehemently opposed to Coburn on the earmark issue.

    Inhofe is good on most every other issue, but leave his pork and earmarks alone!!

  • Scope

    because the Republican that ran against him was not the best candidate by any means. I suspect that in 2012, there will be primary challenges to Hurt if he breaks away from the district desires even by an inch. We shall see.

    I believe that those deep pockets, namely Soros will implant Perriello somewhere where is safe like Center for American Progress or where he came from, the OSI organization. If you need proof, I can provide it.

  • cwilson

    Each department of the federal government gets a particular appropriate. Even earmarks are channeled thru specific departments.

    So, you simply say: “Okay, Department of Energy, here’s your annual appropriate for FY2011. There are no earmarks. However, if you do stupid things (e.g. funding studies of the mating habits of yellow spotted grasshoppers or piss Christ, or what not) then your appropriation for FY2012 will be reduced by at least the amount you spent on such frivolities. Obviously you didn’t need that money to achieve your core mission, if you spent it on irrelevant crap like that. If you have any questions, feel free to appear before the appropriate House or Senate committee during the year before making possibly unwise decisions.”

    And then, stick to it. (Aye, there’s the rub: our limp-noodle-spined legislators threatening the administrative bureaucracies and actually following thru…)

    Anyway, rinse and repeat. After two or three cycles, we could probably abolish entire Departments completely.

  • rickbull

    We in Tennessee have Bob Corker who is one of the sponsors, and we have Lamar Alexander, one of our former governors. Both are Republican and fiscally conservative, but Alexander is on the “bad guys” list. I just sent e-mails to both asking for support for DeMint’s resolution.

  • After Seven

    I tried! I don’t have any GOP Senator’s just 1 Commie and 1 traditional Dem. Not surprisingly, they are for earmarks.

    I’ll tell you Erick…the Bad guy list is seriously depressing….look at that cast of characters.

    * Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky)
    * Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee)
    * Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi)
    * Senator-Elect John Hoeven (R-North Dakota)
    * Senator-Elect Rob Portman (R-Ohio)
    * Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins (R-Maine)
    * Senators Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss (R-Georgia)
    * Senator Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina)
    * Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas)
    * Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)
    * Senator-Elect Jerry Moran and Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kansas)
    * Senator Scott Brown (R-Massachusetts)
    * Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch (R-Idaho)
    * Senator David Vitter (R-Louisiana)
    * Senator John Thune (R-South Dakota)
    * Senator Richard Shelby (R-Alabama)
    * Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Oklahoma)***
    * Senator Richard Lugar and Senator-Elect Dan Coats (R-Indiana)
    * Senator-Elect Roy Blunt (R-Missouri)
    * Senator Orin Hatch (R-Utah)

    ***Inhofe played a key role in almost single handedly fighting the good fight against global warming in the Congress…putting up with relentless attacks from the left and doing everything in his power to debunk the lie….so I’m inclined to not be as upset with him on earmarks as I am with the rest of the flunkees.

    I will be calling him today too. Yes hes a DEM, and a miserable big govt socialist tyrant, but I will make my opinion heard anyway. No earmarks, and whats this 2 year B/S? Make it Permanent, or they are just trying to set it up to crash the country and waste money in the future.

    Yes it is one step at a time to repair things, yet this 2 year ban is unacceptable in my world. Why leave the door open? Either you are going back to conservative values permanently, or we need to replace you.

    Saxby Chambliss who’s aid said he had not made his decision yet. I reminded him that I knew that he is a big user of earmarks and that I hoped for his political future he would have a change of heart.

    Johnny Isakson is supporting the ban, which leads me to think that Chambliss will do the same. Chambliss is not the kind to put a target on his back. He flipped big time when he realized that Georgians were up in arms over the “Amnesty Bill”.

  • msbs05

    I called both Senator’s offices and they both gave the same “the senator does not have a statement on this issue at this time”. I expressed my desire for them to support the ban, we will see!

    Great idea for us to call these folks and let them know that we want them to do the right thing. Too bad so many of them are too greedy to do so, and need to be reminded that they can be replaced.

    Have called Sen. Hutchison TX, and sent her an email since her D. C. phone is busy, so I called San Antonio and spoke with a very nice young woman named Lauren.

    Spoke to the assistant and the response was “Senator does not have a stand on this issue at this time”

    I then asked why he doesnt have a stand given it will be voted on at the beginning of next week. The answers were a combination of: silence, fumbling, and “the Senator has been busy and out of the country,” and he will make a decision next week at the time of the vote.

    So again it’s after I vote I will tell you how I voted and what I voted for. You will find out what I voted for and how I voted after I vote. Pure transparency.

    Yes, please call and tell your Senators that the Founders got it wrong and that President Obama should have the sole power of the purse. Just because Senators and Congressmen were elected to represent a state doesn’t mean they know more about what should be funded than those brilliant bureaucrats in Washington. We clearly need to transfer more power to Obama and future presidents. If a president puts something in the budget, it must be good, if a Senator or Congressmen believes there should be additional funding for something like breast cancer research or armored troop carriers in Iraq, that is a bad idea according to the Senator DeMint and must only be supported if President Obama says so ? he knows best. We need to severely limit the Constitutional authority of the Congress and increase the power of the President. Please call now to express your support for Senator DeMint and right the wrongs done to poor King George in 1776. DeMint knows so much more than our foolish Founding Fathers what is best for the country. Turn satire font off.

    I called Senator McCain’s office this morning, and she stated that he has made no comment about his vote on the earmark ban at this point because he has not been in the office. Right now he is out of the country.

    As for Senator Kyl, his office has no comment at this time about his vote.

    With both offices, I told him that I supported the earmark ban proposed by DeMint, and that I think they should as well. The wasteful spending needs to end. And we are watching them…

    talked with me for 15 minutes about how they will not do anything to get behind in the race for shipping lines contracts for the Port of Charleston. The Army Corp of Engineers study on deepening the Port in preparation for the 2014 Panama Canal opening was defunded in Obama’s budget and must be funded by state/fed funds. He said he is sick of hearing about other options because there are none that work. He said the ports that have tried to privately fund deepening studies have been torpedoed by the Army Corps of Engineers who must approve them. I said I don’t have a sense that it’s a dire situation and he said Senator Graham doesn’t want to look back and have lost thousands of jobs and billions in shipping lines contracts for the state because we got behind Jacksonville, Wilmington, Savannah, etc. in the southern port race for those super tankers. He said there is little chance Congress will ever revise the Army Corp’s process.

    I know the Ports Authority in S.C. is controlled by the General Assembly which is controlled by Sen. McConnell (yes another good old boy Senate leader with an (R) next to the name McConnell, but far worse, believe me). It is not a pretty picture what goes on behind the scenes with that Port Authority and dock leases, contracts, etc. I read in the local paper that Sen. Demint is working with the Ports Authority on alternative avenues to fund this study but I don’t have details. It’s only $200K fed funds this year and $400K next year (if it’s a 50/50 split). The staffer mentioned $1.5 million as a figure too.

    I will try to call Demint’s lead state staffer who is working with Ports. I didn’t argue with this staffer because I could tell he was really hot under the collar about this whole thing. I get the sense his office is FURIOUS with Demint. I could barely stand listening to him defend these earmarks (although he cited all the times the Senator’s voted with Demint against earmarks. I responded that this is brass tacks though because there’s a chance of success. He said it’s not fair that Republicans should have their hands tied and I said it’s a matter of how you do business and if you can give up certain, umm “tools.” I didn’t tell him how abhorrent the earmark tool is to me.

    He said Senator Graham is willing to take the “political heat.” I wanted to retort, no, he isn’t. Senator Demint is the one being excoriated in the local media for “endangering the port.” Senator Graham will be primaried, mark my words.

  • chihank

    On CNN, Leeza Mercowski takes a shot at DeMint for opposing earmarks.

    If Linda MooCowsky wins, then let her be a Dem. As a GOP Senator, she is going to hinder reforms that DeMint supports.

  • Jason_Knarr

    Rob Portman – forgot to ask for name of staffer, no position although staffer mentioned transparency and Rob supporting 1yr moratorium, I stated my case of supporting DeMint’s resolution and that I’m a PC and say that earmarks are still bad for Republicans even if they are transparent
    Richard Lugar – Staffer name is John, no position
    Dan Coates – Can’t get to a staffer, left message to support resolution, then found on his website that he currently supports it.
    Mark Kirk – Staffer name is Kristian, was very receptive and friendly. Kirk currently supports it.
    Roy Blunt – Tried # on campaign website and turned out to be a disconnected number (hm)
    Lamar Alexander – Staffer name is Caroline, no position
    Mitch McConnell – Staffer put me on hold (to probably cut me off cause she couldn’t seem to handle me respectable frustration). I stated to her that I’m a PC, will get more PCs signed up, am disturbed by Mitch’s position and ask that will he change his mind (without being rude). Then trying to call his office again, this time another staffer (male) and told him my case. With Rand elected, I wonder if they are shaking a little. 2014 is the year!
