EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Ah . . . Dick Lugar

So the Republicans win sweeping, historic victories across the country on election night. They largely repudiate the Democrats’ agenda.

One of the issues out in fly over country was the DREAM Act to set a pathway for citizenship for illegal aliens who’ve managed to go to college.

Many, many people across the country oppose it and a lot of Republicans on the campaign trail used it as an example of Democratic lunacy.

So Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois, as his first act after returning to Washington following the elections, introduces two versions of the DREAM Act.

Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), up for re-election in just two short years, makes as his first act back being the bi-partisan co-sponsor of both versions of the DREAM Act.

Welcome to Washington.

Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) must need a hearing aid. He can’t hear us yet. He might, in two years.

you will be needed in two years.

Sen. Lugar is the problem. Marlin Stutzman is the solution. This guy is an idiot. He’s writing his own political obituary.

If Mr Lugar did not hear it, he will. YO! DICK, fix it or leave. You are a RINO, a deaf one too. Your days are numbered in the US Senate, start counting. Two more years, two more years, two more years to retirement. AMF.

    Let me amend that:

I don’t see how Lugar can get through a Primary IF HE HAS ONLY *ONE* CONSERVATIVE CHALLENGER.

If the pols in IN make the same mistake that the pols in the MI GOV and TN GOV races made, and run multiple challengers to Lugar, then Lugar may just slip through.

I hope the people in IN put their heads together and rally around *ONE* conservative challenger (i.e. make sure just *one* “name” runs) against Lugar.

(And, FTR, I don’t think it should be Stutzman – he’s “too new” to try this now – leave him in the House for a few years where he can build his name and brand up…)

    Primary him, please, please, PLEASE!

Of course, the despicable Lisa Murkowski has now written the book on what to do next, but one problem at a time….

someone on the “inside” of the IN GOP that I’d trust to be better than Lugar…. thinking, thinking, thinking. Hmm, Pence certainly but I really like the idea of “Governor” Pence. Nope, can’t think of any GOP insiders that I’d trust to be better than Lugar.

Good old DICK Lugar. What world is DICK living in? It certainly isnt in this galaxy.

I guess he’s planning early for that 2012 run in Arlen’s Party.

Dick wants to bring back the days of the great Bills that he proudly voted for and moved forward – like MCCain Feingold and the Brady Bill.

  • http://www.linkedin.com/in/bdpaasch Brian Paasch

would need to be his pension. If we try to primary him and he wins, then he says ha, ha, ha.
If we primary him and we win, then he says ha, ha, and HA as he collects a fat taxpayer paid for pension and goes to work on K Street.
But don’t get me wrong, replacing him with someone who would take that quaint oath of office (something about a Constitution thingy) seriously would be WONDERFUL!!!!!

    How about SENATOR DANIELS.

Yeah, I’d prefer him as a President, but since he’s term limited, if he doesn’t want to make the big leap to Prez, maybe he’d consider being a Senator.

second. A notorious drunk and obvious dolt, a parody of a functional human, the one and only Ted,hiccup, Kennedy was hailed for years and honored in his death as, “The Lion of the Senate”. This should tell you the full story of this once reasonably respected institution.

…Are state Treasurer Richard Mourdock (R), state Sen. Mike Delph (R) and 2010 Senate candidate Don Bates, Jr. (this according to Hotline On Call.

Can anyone from IN tell us anything about these potential candidates? Are any of them movement conservatives?

  • The_Rebel

in two years and wants to suck up to the MSM and his Dem buddies, Tea Party and conservative Republicans be damned. There definitely should be an age limit on these jokers to stop them from running until they drop dead on the Senate floor. He will be 80 in 2012.

That, more than anything – that he wants to run again at *80* – shows how “Washington” and out of touch he’s gotten.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (The “DREAM Act”) would provide certain inadmissible or deportable alien students who graduate from US high schools, who are of good moral character, arrived in the U.S. as minors, and have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill’s enactment, the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency if they complete two years in the military or two years at a four year institution of higher learning. The alien students would obtain temporary residency for a six year period. Within the six year period, a qualified student must have “acquired a degree from an institution of higher education in the United States or [have] completed at least 2 years, in good standing, in a program for a bachelor’s degree or higher degree in the United States,” or have “served in the uniformed services for at least 2 years and, if discharged, [have] received an honorable discharge.” Military Enlistment contracts require an eight year commitment.

Three term Senator Bob Bennett of Utah was quite a popular politician in the state until he was thrown out by the delegates to the GOP convention in May of this year. He never even made it to a primary. Lugar would do well to listen to Bennett’s quote after his defeat, before he casts some votes he will regret in the next two years:

“The political atmosphere obviously has been toxic, and it’s very clear that some of the votes that I have cast have added to the toxic environment.”

  • http://www.linkedin.com/in/bdpaasch Brian Paasch

In the past 48 hours, I’ve seen a difference in how the IN GOP is handling Lugar versus Coats. The Indiana GOP elite assumed a silly grin and wandered along assuming Coats would stroll to an easy primary victory. THAT didn’t happen, not by a wide margin. Ignoring the conservative movement came close to the same result as in the Alaska GOP primary: Miller beat the complacent GOP elite.

This time the GOP is quick out in front promoting Lugar. They’re going on the quick offensive against the conservative movement with pro-Lugar messages in both the MSM and new media venues.

    Same battle, different plan. Interesting.

For those serious about wanting to stop this debacle..check out Michelle Malkin’s updates. Here’s the one from today.

    http://michellemalkin.com/2010/11/18/dream-act-scorecard-the-gop-senate-fence-sitters/

It also has the complete list Jeff Sessions put out on 10 things you need to know about this Act. Once again, I’m afraid many of our lawmakers haven’t read the whole thing and may not understand the nuances. Malkin is doing the hard work. All we have to do is let our voices be heard. Again.

  • Doc Holliday

if we want to primary Loogie we have the right. We don’t like squishes like him, deal with it!

  • serendipity

I’ve been calling his office every time there is an important issue coming up. The last one I called about is Kagan. He does not listen to Hoosiers. I said he shouldn’t run again, he should retire if he was going to saddle this country with someone like Kagan and referred to several issues she is a problem about. His aide said he had already made up his mind, and we elected him for his JUDGEMENT.
His response to my comment that he should not run in 2012 was a news statement the next day that he plans to run again.
I’ve complained to every official of the IN Republican party about him for the last ten years. Last time he was reelected, they posted on their website excuses for him and his behavior and bad judgement. Sometimes his votes are reliable. IN Rep party refuses to deal with the issue of Lugar.
Stutzman is a good man and I’ve watched him in the IN Senate for a couple of years, he would be far better than anything Lugar would ever do.
I’ve complained to everyone I could think about and no one will listen. I supported Stutzman and would again if he were running.
Most especially LUGAR does not listen and will not, and he is proud of it according to the aides in his office.

Yes, Lugar could well be in office until they carry him out. That doesn’t mean a primary challenge from the right wouldn’t help. It may be able to penetrate his acute case of beltway-insider-itis and remind him that he works for the citizens of Indiana … and had maybe better ask them what they want.

Even keep track of what people think in this state. We passed voter ID laws to keep illegals out of our polls, and he thinks that the U.S. should reward these people now. What a rino joke.

The only reason he gets back in office is the dems do stupid crap, that he then pretends he doesn’t support, and he hasn’t been primaried out.

I don’t know who thinks Lugar is loved here, but they are either not from this state, or delusional. If we get a good effort to build support for a conservative to knock him out in the primary, they’ll win. Most people are sick of the kind of crap he and the rest of rinos pull.

And as to him being more popular than Daniels, who is being polled, unionized teachers?

  • stephaniet

He confirmed Kagan. I sent him a scathing letter regarding it. In return, I got a bunch of lies and excuses, all centered on the overwhelmingly obvious elitist thought, “Let me try to show you why you’re wrong, little peasant, if you possess the brain power.”

    And now this DREAM shamnesty?

    Ugh.

Get. Him. Out. PLEASE, there’s gotta be somebody in Indiana better! I won’t be in Indiana in 2012 so I won’t be able to vote, so the rest of you better do right in my stead!

  • AceInTX
  • calgacus

I rather suspect Mitch Daniels would support this legislation also. I also have a feeling that when people realize Lugar’s voting record over the last decade, they will have a declining opinion of him, especially conservatives. Remember, at one time, Charlie Crist was the most popular Governor in America and leading Rubio 60 – 8. Lugar has been going downhill for years. Daniels is running for President, not Senate, but we could still get a stronger conservative to challenge him.

  • jrfoleyjr

You want to know what a RINO is going to do, take a look at his back trail. Juan McAmnesty just got re-elected in Arizona by posing as a conservative but we all know he is from the same amnesty club as Dicky-do Lugar.

No one should be surprized that Lugar is an unrepentent RINO. He is from the same club that passed S.2611 (The Bush-Kennedy-McCain senate amnesty bill) back in 2006, To refresh your memories of who voted for amnesty for illegal aliens, I have the link to the official US Senate Roll Call vote page:

    http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00157

Just cut-n-paste into your browser address line.

The line below this ‘Leave a comment’ pane says ‘be respectful’ but that is very dificult or nearly impossible when addressing the issue of RINOs, so a little latitude is requested. RINOs deserve NO RESPECT.

  • jrfoleyjr

…especially when they are bags full of doggy-land mines. :)

  • jrfoleyjr

Lugar, McAmnesty, Grahamnesty, McConnell, Murkowski, Brownback…

I read somewhere that Brownback is talking of retiring and running for governor? Any updates on this?

I read that Murkowski won on a write -in vote after losing the primary. How was that pulled off? Must be no illegal alien problem in Alaska or maybe it is a voter education problem. Might be six months before some of them find out the election results.

We all know that McAmnesty got re-elected by a combination of lies about his conservative conversion and a ‘get out the vote’ effort amongst illegal alien voters in Arizona.

  • jrfoleyjr

…when Republicans cave in and agree with Democrats. This defines the compromise solution which means that a Republican must compromise his principles and agree with the Democrat to arrive at a BIPARTISAN solution. There is no reverse case for a Democrat compromising with a Republican. This is simply Republican obstructionism when the Democrat can not arrive at a solution to his complete total satisfaction.

  • jrfoleyjr

Back at the time there was great anticipation that Fred was going to be the conservative savior but all he wanted was to be annointed as the GOP presidential nomonee. Fortunately the ‘Draft Fred” movement failed. We also found out that Fast Freddy was a supporter of Bill Frist (the RINO majority leader of the senate and ring leader of the S.2611 vote) in 2006.

  • philforest

Murkowski won on the basis of mail-in votes, which supports the contention that mail-in voting should be banned, on the basis of it’s vulnerability to fraud. Early voting, in general, is fraud-ridden and should be eliminated. Let’s get back to the “go to the polls on Tuesday” tradition, which is also easier and less expensive to police. Let mail-in or early ballots be true absentee ballots from folks with a legitimate reason for not being there on election day.

have known, raised money for, and supported Lugar for 40 years (until recently). My mother helped run Dick Lugar’s minority scholarship program. My father helped him launch his political career. But if you ask them today what they think of him, they just shake their heads and say, ‘He’s a Washingtonian now. He doesn’t know or care about the desires of Indiana voters.’
It’s very sad. I’m sure that Lugar wouldn’t give my parents the time of day now. He considers himself far too important to listen to the people who have helped to put him in his exalted position.
Washington, D.C. sucks out your soul!

to be the movement conservative challenger to retire Lugar — he has a strong and loyal following in the IN TEA Party and nationwide among conservatives and constitutionalists, he has always run completely independently of the pathetic IN GOP establishment, he is principled, smart and an experienced campaigner… and he is not for sale. He will not compromise. He is courageous and forthright on the issues, so the state party doesn’t much like him — but Mike Pence does. The GOP institutionally has thrown him under the bus in every race he has undertaken for the Party, and he just continues to build loyal support and carry a 100% conservative platform regardless. He is your guy to take out Lugar. Scott doesn’t owe anybody in the GOP anything. www.drmarvinscottforcongress.com

Wikipedia is a good place to look for a quick fact but I would have thought that by now most Redstaters would have fifured out that on most political issues and particularly social issues it is hopelessly stanted to the left. You have essentially just given us the leftest spin and except for the name of the act, almost nothing you posted there was true. The bill is packed with loopholes.

To keep things fair and balanced, here is what Michele Malkin has to say about it. Her analysis is unabashedly and openly slanted to the right but at least she is trustworthy. Take a look at the second half of the article.

Wonder why so much of the “Republican” Washington establishment supports “comprehensive immigration reform”? One reason, they’re “in bed” with several very large business groups, most particularly meat packers, who want a continued supply of cheap, easily intimidated labor. I’ve dealt with the industry which ranges from huge beef feedlot-meat processing plants to chicken processors (sold ‘em technology.) You may not be aware of it but most of their workforce is composed of illegal aliens.

Not only are such folks willing to do very hard, repetitive, bloody work for much less than Americans, but their illegal status makes them easily subject to “dicipline” should they “make trouble.” “Want to file a grievance Jose? You sure? Remember ‘la migra!’ I just might have to call Immigration and check your status.” So “Jose, Maria, and Juan” shut up. There are a number of other industries who rely heavily on illegal immigrant labor as well; food service, restaurants, construction etc. etc. Were we to have a genuine “bracero” temporary worker program, many of the unfair advantages to such business would disappear.

I defer to no one in my libertarian-Republican pro business philosophy. But it is NO MORE justifiable for business interests to seek special favors from government than it is for government to seek control over business. Such establishment types as Dick Lugar have been around for centuries. We really need to weed ‘em out. Goodbye Lugar in the 2012 GOP primary!

  • earlgrey

My Eeyore is on maximum level.

I would have expected some Dems (Mark Pryor, VA dems, Montana Dems, Manchin, to vote against this monstoristy). To be honest I hadn’t been that worried about it, until today. Between this and Net Neutrality. I am struggling to hold on today.

As for Lugar, I grew up in Indianapolis. He was mayor when our famous UniGov (combined city-state governement was established), and Indianapolis is now trying to do away with more local elected positions etc. I don’t think it is too late or impossible for Lugar to make himself so unpopular he won’t be elected. I just don’t think anyone can say they have it made, Of course I don’t see why he keeps getting elected in the first place except maybe he is just not an attractive to a democrat challenger. Indy has alot of RINOs

I know more about Bayh’s position and background than Lugar’s. I don’t remember any Lugar campaigns. He is more part of Washington than he is part of Indiana IMHO.

Following up on an earlier post about good Indy republicans. I think we woudl do well to remember the State treasurer’s brave stance against the Chrysler bailout. If anything that experience has probably made this guy more conservative.
