EDITOR OF REDSTATE

Another TSA Outrage

UPDATE: I’m getting a lot of emails asking if this is actually true and is this person actually someone I know. (1) Yes it is true — it is too absurd to be made up. (2) Yes, I know the person.

——–

A friend of mine sent me this about his TSA experience. He, unlike most of us, was coming back into the country from Afghanistan on a military charter.

——–

As the Chalk Leader for my flight home from Afghanistan, I witnessed the following:

When we were on our way back from Afghanistan, we flew out of Baghram Air Field. We went through customs at BAF, full body scanners (no groping), had all of our bags searched, the whole nine yards.

Our first stop was Shannon, Ireland to refuel. After that, we had to stop at Indianapolis, Indiana to drop off about 100 folks from the Indiana National Guard. That’s where the stupid started.

First, everyone was forced to get off the plane–even though the plane wasn’t refueling again. All 330 people got off that plane, rather than let the 100 people from the ING get off. We were filed from the plane to a holding area. No vending machines, no means of escape. Only a male/female latrine.

It’s probably important to mention that we were ALL carrying weapons. Everyone was carrying an M4 Carbine (rifle) and some, like me, were also carrying an M9 pistol. Oh, and our gunners had M-240B machine guns. Of course, the weapons weren’t loaded. And we had been cleared of all ammo well before we even got to customs at Baghram, then AGAIN at customs.

The TSA personnel at the airport seriously considered making us unload all of the baggage from the SECURE cargo hold to have it reinspected. Keep in mind, this cargo had been unpacked, inspected piece by piece by U.S. Customs officials, resealed and had bomb-sniffing dogs give it a one-hour run through. After two hours of sitting in this holding area, the TSA decided not to reinspect our Cargo–just to inspect us again: Soldiers on the way home from war, who had already been inspected, reinspected and kept in a SECURE holding area for 2 hours. Ok, whatever. So we lined up to go through security AGAIN.

This is probably another good time to remind you all that all of us were carrying actual assault rifles, and some of us were also carrying pistols.

So we’re in line, going through one at a time. One of our Soldiers had his Gerber multi-tool. TSA confiscated it. Kind of ridiculous, but it gets better. A few minutes later, a guy empties his pockets and has a pair of nail clippers. Nail clippers. TSA informs the Soldier that they’re going to confiscate his nail clippers. The conversation went something like this:

TSA Guy: You can’t take those on the plane.

Soldier: What? I’ve had them since we left country.

TSA Guy: You’re not suppose to have them.

Soldier: Why?

TSA Guy: They can be used as a weapon.

Soldier: [touches butt stock of the rifle] But this actually is a weapon. And I’m allowed to take it on.

TSA Guy: Yeah but you can’t use it to take over the plane. You don’t have bullets.

Soldier: And I can take over the plane with nail clippers?

TSA Guy: [awkward silence]

Me: Dude, just give him your damn nail clippers so we can get the f**k out of here. I’ll buy you a new set.

Soldier: [hands nail clippers to TSA guy, makes it through security]

This might be a good time to remind everyone that approximately 233 people re-boarded that plane with assault rifles, pistols, and machine guns–but nothing that could have been used as a weapon.

and I am incredibly outraged. The sooner these TSA power-trippers are put in their places the better off we will all be.

  • joecollins

Soldiers, yes. Unloaded weapons, yes. But Nuns . . oh no. Nuns need to be searched.

  • fpete13527
  • bcochran1981

…that’s just standard stupidity. The overall treatment of these fine men and women, THAT pisses me off.

  • pastisprolog

It would be funnier if it weren’t a sure sign of insanity. If this doesn’t show the inmates are in charge of the asylum, nothing will.

  • pastisprolog

This needs to be a scene in a movie.

  • MikeInOhio

This question needs to become the focus.

The Israelis look for terrorsits, and they have not had an aircraft incident for decades. Yes, it is a much smaller scale, but a much bigger target.

I would like one of our representatives to ask the top people at TSA and/or Homeland Security:
Suppose you had a profile that would have precisely identified the 19 9/11 hijackers – every one of them, and no others. And that profile did not consider religion, race, or nationality.
Would that profile have been acceptable? Would you use it? Or would it be rejected, even today, knowing its effectiveness, because it picked out too high a proportion of Muslims?

And from those answers, many other questions should follow.

they have willingly signed up to participate in an unconstitutional activity. We have wondered many times if the military or law enforcement officers would come to the rescue of America’s citizens, should a tyrannical government take over, and, I would say that the TSA screeners have signed up to be on the side of a tyrannical government enforcement intrusion. I believe there are something like 65,000 of them. Now that we see that they will probably be a part of a public sector union, are the perks more important to them than the citizens freedoms with respect to the 4th Amendment? There really is a danger in promoting fast food workers, who started on lettuce today, and were promoted to fries tomorrow, and are now TSA workers making the big bucks.

  • rogershru2

Great story. I always thought it was strange when I can take an M9 and an M4, as well as plenty of scalpels and needles and drugs in my medbag, but even the tiniest knife was apparently a huge threat. I’m still laughing at this story because it is so true to life.

  • romeg

do you think they might have engaged in any kind of RACIAL PROFILING [shudder, cringe, Oh the Humanity]?

  • Scope

Exactly right. They are protecting our country, but, upon return, they are treated as potential criminals, as are all flying Americans. The irony of removing nail clippers, while having a plane filled with real weapons is beyond stupid. Is there any other word that overtakes stupid?

You have my admiration, since I didn’t hear about this on the evening news.

“It?s probably important to mention that we were ALL carrying weapons.”

And of course, all of YOU are weapons. You’ve all had basic hand-to-hand combat training, yes? You don’t even need a “weapon” to take someone down.

Nail clippers, riiiiggght. My two empty hands and my martial arts training versus nail clippers… Hmm. Let. Me. Think…..

  • mriggio

Much easier to train to look for forbidden THINGS on the ever-present checklist, than to look at the person you’re screening. A psych/appearance profile is much trickier to train to, much more difficult to master than a list of THINGS which much be impounded. If these folks were trained to screen for actual terrorist threats (people), our returning heroes wouldn’t even qualify for scrutiny. But, this way is easier, and it sure appears that we’re doing something useful, even if we really aren’t.

Erick, please express my thanks to your friend for his service.

  • http://UnitedConservativesofVirginia Cargosquid

My two empty hands and no martial arts traing vs nail clippers…and I’m a 210 lb, 5’6″, sedentary blogger…..

Someone tries to take over a plane with those and they deserve the butt-whuppin’ that some granny is going to give them….

  • texasgalt

stupid. Stupid is forever. Once in a blue moon you can fix liberal.

  • JoeG

Give the clipper to a TSA agent and tell them to charge after you with it.

Then demonstrate how effective the but end of a rifle is at being a skull basher…

  • http://seekingliberty.wordpress.com fmaidment

…had head-butted the TSA Agent. Or instructed him on how dangerous a rifle can be without any bulllets while in the hands of a well-trained American soldier. His job is, after all, to defend America from all enemies, foreign AND domestic! Alas, no. He has more class than me.

Remember how Federally-employed TSA Agents were supposed to be a “temporary, 3 year program?”

  • gypsy

The TSA is trying to provoke an incident. All this unnecessary rough treatment cannot just be a coincidence.

  • layedbackguy2

I have read people from the ‘Far Left’ to the ‘Far Right’ write all of the same things on the TSA topic. So rare to listen to people on both sides agree on something!

    So what will happen?

My guess; not much of anything…the police state will continue, they will just work out some new PR campaign to reassure us all that they are just trying to keep us safe, and anyone who disagrees with the TSA is at best ignorant, at worst a terrorist sympathizer.

    “…And so it goes”.

  • JustLeaveMeAlone

My fully-loaded travel tote, swung at someone’s head, would make a heck of a sap.

My keys, held in my palm with the keys protruding between my clenched fingers, would really add punch to my punch.

And yanno those seat-belt extenders that the more … ahem… rotund passengers use? Or the demo ones the flight attendants show? Ever been accidentally hit by one of those suckers? I have; it hurt! Swung strategically, I could see it knock someone out.

The ridiculous, nonsensical rules just keep piling up, and still we obey like sheep.

These servicemen & women have been through enough for us, the citizens of the USA. TSA should have been warned against bothering them.

Now I am outraged for them.

  • itrytobenice

They should have been honored and respected rather than shuffled around like so many sheep. Our TSA, as well as most of our bureaucrats, does nothing so well as practice their incompetence.

    They absolutely disgust me.

  • grandma

Isn’t TSA going to be unionized soon?

The Keystone Cops had their act together better than TSA.

  • grandma

None of this is a coincidence.

  • blooch

when the first cadres of the Civilian Natioanl Security Force are formed.

FWIW, Security at Indianapolis Airport was confiscating box-cutters and roaming the concourses with what I assume were bomb or drug-sniffing dogs back in the ’90′s. I was in many US airports during that time, and none of their security was as thorough or restrictive as Indianapolis Airport’s team. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that the guy who ran that show got kicked upstairs into the TSA.

  • Kudzu

In 2005 when we deployed via charter flight out of Hawaii. TSA told us we had to check bag our knives but then it got better. With our rifles we had to remove the firing pin (most removed the bolt carrying group) even though we had no ammo.

Flights that make more than one stop in the states were always subject the the jurisdiction of TSA and that means a hassle. We had to be rescreened in Minn St Paul before actually hoping back on the plane for Iraq

  • fastrock

TSA was a mistake. We have personnel that inspect people and cargo everyday. They are the US Coast Guard. They probably don’t have the #s to do every airport but that is nothing more than assigning them the mission and time to increase their ranks. Many would love the opportunity to live in a metro area or close to home verses an ocean cutter or an inland waterway. Anyhow, my 2 cents

  • bobmontgomery

……before Congress? Stephen Colbert or this soldier? Sean Penn or this soldier? Janet Napolitano or this soldier?

  • http://pocketchangeproductions.net/ anotherindyfilmguy

Just most folks don’t carry 2×4′s or other implements to fix stupid to the airport these days…

  • merryj1

The ostensible purpose of “security checking” is to preserve liberty, is it not? So, we become fascists to protect ourselves from fascism? What’s wrong with that picture?

According to news reports, an Orlando (Fla) airport is opting out of the TSA “protective” services in favor of using a private security outfit. That’s probably a good solution for most of the country – it won’t fly in corrupt-to-the-bone (liberal-controlled) area-airports such as Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway, New York City-controlled airports, etc., but everyone should start applying citizen-pressure on relevant authorities and bodies to terminate the TSA “service” at their local airports in favor of private security outfits. If enough airports get rid of the TSA, a lot of passengers will avoid the airports that retain TSA and the problem will resolve itself.

  • Brian Hibbert

It happens with every government agency, everywhere. When following procedure becomes the most important part of someone’s job, they tend to lose their minds and do stupid things like this…..

It’s yet another reason why we need a smaller, less intrusive government.

Yes, they are trying to keep us safe, that is why illegals have taken over many of the federal parks in the southern states. Now, don’t you feel safer? When the federal governments solution to the takeover of our national parks is a sign telling Americans to stay out, I know I feel so much safer.

  • walter

is what it’s time to do. We can stand around and chat about it all we want but it’s TIME TO DEFUND this nightmare. Each of us has to make sure we keep an eye on our state and US representatives.

Start by cutting government 10% then go from there. Expose how wasteful our tax dollars are when they are used for such incompetence. Constantly expose them. Let the people watch how imbicilic the politicians look trying to defend such nonsense. Then go after their jobs… yes, boot them out again and again until they finally get it.

    WE THE PEOPLE! Get it?

Call me selfish, I WANT YOU TO!

  • renny

Use racial profiling, behavior, and psychological profiling. Until then, the stupidities and anomalies of the TSA will continue and multiply.

  • stephaniet

This is nuts. I for one would let a soldier keep his freakin’ nail clippers, because if they can be used as a weapon (omg!) then I’d still want a soldier defending me from a hijacker, even if he used nail clippers to do it.

The TSA has about two brain cells in the whole agency, absolutely no common sense, no sense of common decency, and a power-trip that is quickly catching up to Bozo’s in size and scope.

Oh, by the way, TSA? An unloaded rifle still makes a GREAT club to beat people over the head with. You should be glad our noble warrior there didn’t decide to demonstrate on you.

  • politicalqrm

this is a MILITARY charter. Our fighting men and women…MILITARY (sorry, I have to keep repeating it, it’s driving me crazy)

. These people have gone through the biggest hell on earth imaginable. The fact that TSA is inspecting them and confiscating a nail clipper is mind boggling.

What did they think he was going to do with it? Demand that the pilot fly back to Bagram?

This proves that one of the requirements for a TSA position is the lack of intelligence or common sense..

    God help us all..

  • betaylor322

    Hi bcochran1981

Loved your observation about “liberals”. How true!!!! I can’t help but think also, about Ann Coulter’s book, “How to Speak to a Liberal – If You Must”.

I don’t supposed anything ever tested if the whole body scan machines do NOT catch explosives, but it’s real encouraging that they’d catch nail clippers!

    What a JOKE!

  • betaylor322

    Hi Texasgalt,

What do you do if you encounter a STUPID LIBERAL? To me, that’s just redundant. To me, they’re the same thing, and just more fodder for the Darwin List: those whose leaving of the planet make it all the better.

Every Dictator in History knew that to have & hold POWER you must set up the Structure where everyone up & down your lineup has a GUN to everyone else’s head.. Joe Stalin, Adolph Hitler, – they all had guns to each others head.. They did as they were told or the TRIGGER was pulled.
Here in America & other Western Nations, it’s the Money, the Position, & the Power that each Level holds to the Head of every level of POWER.
MONEY,POSITION,POWER has replaced the GUN.. But never forget, – The GUN is the “Implied Force ” behind the Position & the Power..

  • swissrmeman

If this is true and accurate, does Ms. Napolitano have a copy of this. Not that she will do anything with it.

This soldier needs to report this to his/her Conrgessman/Senator. If they do not support the military or our views, then to some who does. This is absolutely intolerable treatement. Along with asinine!

  • edintexas

If the TSA thinks nail clippers are a good weapon, but not an M4, they’ve never been butt stroked. Now I know the M-16 and M-4 aren’t the best for butt stroking (not anywhere near the capability of my old M-1s or M-14s), but still they could easily put someone down.

Our troops could have fixed “stupid”, but they are too disciplined to be more than tempted.

  • okiejim

And wait until they all become unionized.

  • tlhanger

Remember when everyone thought it was a good idea to kick out the people that had always been doing the job and to get the government people in there. I thought it was stupid then and think it is even more stupid now. Remember these people are only doing what the commander in chief tells them to do. Government is the problem. Little talking bricks all uniform in doing their masters bidding.

  • tadams1138

Almost the exact same thing happened to us in 2005 going out of the US heading to Iraq. In my recollection, we made everyone with anything sharp (K-bars, bayonets, leathermans, etc) into one sea bag for the company. The “fun” part was when we got to Iraq and had to figure out who had what. The marine in charge of the armory does not like wondering why he can’t account for every bayonet. (I swear sea bags are to bayonets like dryers are to socks). We still carried our rifles onto the aircraft though. Giant waste of our time.

  • momof4

TSA would have to treat individuals differently. We all know that can’t be allowed, it reeks of that “p” word, yep, profiling!
Imagine, actually requiring a TSA employee to think, rather than employing a robotic response to a list. It makes one’s brain ache.

It would have been more appropriate for the TSA workers to applaud our uniformed men an women. Shame on our government, and the TSA, for allowing such demoralizing and cavalier treatment of our military on their way HOME!

  • bcochran1981

…liberal is worse than stupid. Stupid is a genetic condition that you can only do so much about. Liberal is a choice. Liberalism is willful stupidity and ignorance.

Until we begin to take TSA to task via the courts (unfortunately, we will need lawyers for this). Until then, they will continue to harass our military, grope our wives, daughters and grandmothers. If you haven’t seen Penn Jillette’s report of his own persona experience with TSA at McCarran in Las Vegas on the Drudge Report, you need to read it. It is gratifying that someone of his high profile is willing to use his fame and money in search of freedom for all. Attaboy, Penn!

  • cam1

in the law that allows a municipality the option to fire TSA and hire an independent contractor to provide security. With all the military coming home it looks like a great opportunity to start a new PRIVATE industry that will provide intelligent and effective airport security.

This all starts on the local level.

Wow… I would love to see a terrorist take over a plane with 300 soldiers coming from Afghanistan with a nail clipper.

Reminds me of the Airplane movie where people were lining up to help control the lady that was freaking out. That would be Epic. LOL

  • Gigi

It’s interesting in each of the cases I have seen that people have filed charges, etc… TSA says that they investigated and they found the TSA gestapo acted correctly or they won’t comment at all. Nice of them to be so “impartial” while policing themselves. If there is a big blow-up it will just give them an excuse to crack down harder.

I also can’t understand the people who say if you don’t like it, don’t fly. I want to ask them, what happens when they install these at train/subway stations, bus stations, malls, etc… They are already at most government buildings. Will they ultimately stand between the American public and all travel modes and shopping venues. A great way to police people and keep them under your thumb.

Who truly thinks that the government will stop with the airports if the people don’t stand up to this?

  • Gigi

What bunch of clowns these TSA blue shirts are. They should have have thanked those soldiers for their service and wished them safe travels. Instead they steal a man’s nail clippers. Useless idiots – the lot of them.

  • arnold1

if those servicemen wonder if it was worth the hell they just went through defending stupid, brain-dead bureacrats and politicians who have the gall to call themselves citizens of the United States! But I know first hand what the “guvmint” can and will do to you if they get a case genitalia tumescence over your unwillingness to submit. Our only safety is in numbers. Lots of numbers. Active numbers. Loud numbers. Never give up! This is the last bastion of hope! We can stamp out this disease! We must not quit!

  • rjhfl

Idiocy such as this is the result of liberal indoctrination, political correctness (mind control), and zero tolerance policy (otherwise known as: I do not have any judgement or common sense, but I cannot be held responsible). It could only thrive and survive in the government environment.

  • bellsheadboy

Get ready people. This is just the warm up for what is just around the corner. Once the sheeple are used to being fondled at the airports they will find their privates being patted at theaters, shopping malls, football games and lots of other locations all in the name of national security. All it will take is for a bomb to go off in one of these venues and kill a few hundred innocents and mother government will step in and take away some more freedom to make us more “secure”.It is a favorite way of communist and socialist to take over a society and bring the populace under complete control. We had better get this rogue government under control or we will become the Socialist States of America.

No TSA official has the authority to impede military troop movements. The leader of any movement of troops should be taught that.

The leader of any movement of troops that is impeded by a TSA official, should place said TSA official under arrest and call the local sheriff.

  • Kudzu

When we fly on commercial or on charter flights that land in civilian airports. Its not that they have “jurisdiction” over us but we are flying in airplanes that are in American airspace, which they have the job to protect. Nothing an officer said or did that day or any day will over rule TSA protocol

  • littlekitty

I travel a lot, and TSA agents can swing from one end of the spectrum to the other. One time, I actually had a TSA agent take away perfume (which was the correct size,) lipstick and tampons from me. Yes, tampons. It was ridiculous. Frankly, I think she wanted my new perfume and lipstick for herself, but to this day, I cannot figure out what was up with the tampons.

But, on another occasion, I had inadvertently forgotten to take some scissors out of a carry-on bag. It was a simple oversight. Although at first, the TSA guys were all over me about it, the one that was going through my bag told me to go ahead through with them. He was really nice about it. I thanked him…I was totally expecting him to throw them away. So, I’m not surprised when I hear these kinds of stories. Some have great people skills, can deal in stressful situations and make good decisions, while others cannot do the same. Unfortunately, those who go to the ridiculous extreme, making no sense are always the ones that are remembered.

  • rodney_robbins

Being a Veteran of the US Army, and having been deployed, I am not buying this story. Returning from deployment, specifically a war zone, US troops are not required to be screened by TSA. That is a regulation, and my personal experience. While I think the TSA are morons, i’m thinking this story either isnt true, or has been embellished. But returning from a war zone, American troops carrying weapons do not go through TSA.

  • rodney_robbins

I did a little research, and yeah, this bogus story was circulated first back in 2004, by an “anonymous source”, and now it’s back again as a recent event. Notice not one news outlet, including Fox, has covered it?

Sorry Erik, youve been had on this one.

    Rod in Oregon

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

Hey Sparky, that’s an awfully snotty comment for one utterly devoid of backing.

  • rodney_robbins

When something is posted like this story, there should be citations to prove its validity. I totally agree! So provide evidence other than blog posts of anonymous sources. Thats all there is. There is no documentation that this actually took place. And since the last time this story circulated was 2004, only then, it was a group of soldiers returning from Iraq, not Afghanistan.

I stand by my statement. This story is bogus. :)

  • rodney_robbins

I do apologize if I sounded snotty… Not intending too.. :) I also believe the TSA are morons… But there are so many stories that go around as fact, that have utterly no backing or verification.

    :)

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

You made a specific claim about Erick, now back it up or retract it. Next post or last, your call.

I’m not in the mood for your attitude.

  • rodney_robbins

Erik made the claim, it’s his job to back it up. I have nothing to prove. Debate doesnt work that way. All the verification for his claim is based on blogs. Thats not serious, credible evidence. There are so many variations of this story that it is simply not credible. I dont have to prove anything. He made the original claim, therefore, the verification is his responsibility. It’s called the scientific method… Prove your claim at the time you make it with credible facts, or expect to be challenged.

I will not retract. You can do whatever you want. Whine to the moderator, whatever. But your blind belief in everything Erik says is just as bad as the left swallowing everything Keith Olbermann says.

Look, I said my peace, now I am done. Oh, and if your interested in believing these types of stories, there is this guy in Ethiopia that has 23 million dollars he is trying to get out of the country… But he needs an American to help him. Why don’t you drop him an email since you seem to believe stories that have no verifiable basis.

    Good luck!

  • drjohngalt

Should have handed over the nail clippers and followed up by beating the shit out of him with the rifle. After all he would have been in possession of a threating weapon so self defense would be necessary. And after/if he recovered he would probably no longer confiscate nail clippers. Some people only learn through experience.

  • bobdog

THIS is what our government has metastasized into. Is anybody in Washington actually listening?

As far as I’m concerned, the military should be frisking the TSA agents. I trust them far more than the morons at the gates.

These folks should have been welcomed with gratitude, and waved on through with a humble thank you, not treated as a threat.

  • pgrossjr

If you are familiar with life under communism or fascism, this is not at all surprising. Even when agencies are created for noble purposes, in short order the mission of all bureaucrats mutates from whatever the original mission was to perpetuating the bureaucracy. You do that by continually finding new areas in which to assert the power of the agency. This is not supposed to happen in democracies where the citizen as opposed to the state is supposed to be supreme.

But I did at this one. Excellent.

You’ll get dinged for the profanity, but sometimes it’s the clearest way to say something.

Then again they don’t care about cancer survivors with scars (http://bit.ly/bKUhRe) like mine or prosthesis. I enjoy the fact that people are so used to government over-reaching they doubt the tales told by those maltreated by the TSA.

done by private companies. After DB Cooper, about 1974, the airlines did a lot of their own screening, then private companies took it over, better run, cheaper and less headaches for the airlines. After 9/11 the GOVERNMENT took it over (“we’re here to help you”….right….) and now they think they need to be UNIONIZED and boy will that mess things up even more! Some small airports are “opting out” of the TSA, and I think it’s a great idea. Hopefully Congress (the House) can put an end to this nightmare….whatever happened to common sense? I guess in many cases it isn’t there when you’re uneducated!!

Admittedly, I am no constitutional scholar, so please educate me… Why couldnt we use our own military to do screenings and security checks? Get rid of the TSA idiots altogether.

    You did not…choose wisely.

OK. But nail clippers were removed from the banned list several years ago.

became a push & he then had complete power. The airports remind me of
Nazi Germany in the beginning. REMEMBER! TSA is run by the govern-
ment & made up of the union.

Yes, you would search nuns. They might be smuggling in something like, a covered dish or other delicious foods.

Does the Obama regime’s decision to begin regimenting America and habituating it to fascism by using the TSA to force people to accept child molestation by government bureaucrats require 2nd Amendment remedies?

God bless all of those fighting over seas for us. Are you really kidding me though? Come on. I have a very hard time believing thatwhole story. With so many dramatic claims being posted in the past week or so this just over doing it. Start off first nail clippers are not a prohibited item and at least the Gerber has a knife on it though I even doubt that was/would have been taken since it is a military charter AND THEY STILL KEPT THEIR FIREARMS WITH THEM. If the flying public was on the plane there would be no weapons in the cabin of the plane.

There are enough true issues that should be dealt with instead of all the false or extremely misleading stories coming out.God bless all of those fighting over seas for us. of a scene in one of the ‘Airplane’ movies where people are going through an airport security checkpoint. People are going through and setting off metal detectors right and left, including obvious gang members (or were they New Black Panthers?) carrying machine guns and rocket launchers, but when granny hits the metal detector, she’s thrown against the wall for frisking/detainment.

Could this be the start of their inspiration?

I beg to differ with you, bub. As a former Soldier I can identify with the story. I was coming back from Korea just after 9/11 and I had a tiny hem remover confiscated from my uniform sewing repair kit. It was maybe an inch long with a small hook on the end of it. The customs idiot actually stood there and “demonstrated” its lethality by jabbing himself in the finger to show me how it could be “used” as a weapon. On my second trip back from Iraq in 2003, we had to switch flights in Paris. The idiots in customs tried to take our GAS MASKS, because they may be “contaminated”. Stupidity, it appears, is an international affliction.
