Robert Menendez, the other day, said it was like negotiating with terrorists referencing the tax compromise talks. Today, Barack Obama called the GOP ‘hostage takers.’
So much for reaching across the aisle.
Of course that is what Barack Obama had to say. His base is so angry they’d be breaking out the pitchforks and storming the White House if it weren’t for the Secret Service and their two year narrative that its the tea party that is the angry-racist crowd.
Ultimately, the most thinned skinned inhabitant of the White House in several generations, literally took one on the chin a few weeks ago and has figuratively taken one today. More so, he gave the GOP leaders — not necessarily the GOP itself — what they wanted and acknowledged that they’ll be in an even better position come January.
That just gives the GOP base the incentive to try to kill this deal. And no, I don’t think he is smart enough to intend that from his remarks.
The President of the United States today has been left with a few “I’m rubber, your glue” remarks in his newly styled sticks and stones White House.
But, Mr. Obama, I have a question for you — if the American people are hostages and the GOP are the hostage takers, what the hell are you besides a failed negotiator?
And if you can’t even succeed in negotiating with the GOP, how exactly will you succeed against Iran, North Korea, and . . . you know . . . the real terrorists and hostage takers? Maybe this explains why the 2010 troop death toll in Afghanistan is closing in on the total Afghan death toll under George W. Bush’s Presidency.

Brian Darling (Diary) Tuesday, December 7th at 3:14PM EDT (link)Did the President really just compare Republicans to “hostage takers?” Not a nice way to treat people after a negotiation where both parties cut a deal.
“It’s tempting not to negotiate with hostage takers. Unless the hostage gets harmed,” Obama replies. “In this case the hostage was the American people and I was not willing to see them get harmed.”

Yes, he did
mspector (Diary) Wednesday, December 8th at 11:28AM EDT (link)not just “compare” Republicans to “hostage takers”, he said that’s what they were. An extraordinary display of civility and bipartisanship, wouldn’t you say?
Obama said this because he still has to sell the deal to the Democrats (especially in the House where Pelosi now seems to outflank him to the left). He doesn’t know how to lead in a situation like this, so instead of explaining it as (to him) an unfortunate compromise that had to be made because neither party could achieve its tax goals at this time but also neither party could accept a huge bump in the tax rates in January, he has to play the petulant child and present it as something he would never have done except for the sake of the poor hostages in the Republican basement.
Once again Obama will encounter the law of unintended consequences (or, more simply, “be careful what you ask for because you just might get it”) because his attitude on this will serve as a call to House Democrats to “go to the mattresses”. He may be unable to deliver the compromise plan at all (House Dems are already talking about amending the deal); if he does somehow manage to strongarm the House (not at all likely) he will at the same time fuel Democratic resentment and antagonism, which will mean a very contentious two years leading up to 2012.
This will be ironic because up until now the Dems have been able to vilify Republicans as unwilling to compromise, etc. Now the Dems will find themselves in that same position, because everything Obama does to get legislation through the House will be viewed by the True Believers as capitulation. Assuming compromise to be a necessary evil (no less necessary because it is evil, no less evil because it is necessary), it is almost certain that the House Dems will show themselves to be incapable of bending at all.
All of which should be good news for the GOP and Tea Party in 2012 if we know how to handle it.

He’d have no answer. And in typical Obama fashion, would simply take his teleprompter and go home.
I’m no prognosticator, but I think he’s gonna crumble. The only way the GOP loses ANY momentum going into 2012 would be if they embrace another McCain.

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

On the other hand, we now know his kryptonite. The people we elected (THAT’S YOU, REPUBLICANS) to issue a “restraining order” (to quote PJ O’Rourke) should be willing to let the President exhibit his titanic immaturity as much as possible.

9.8% meet 11% unemployment
Hammer2008 (Diary) Tuesday, December 7th at 9:49PM EDT (link)A two-year extension in time for 2012 campaign, coupled with a 13-month extension in unemployment benefits? There is going to be a huge segment of “”99-ers”, those who have received unemployment for almost two years, or 99 weeks. The reasons the GOP are arguing for tax cuts regarding small businesses are due to that ‘uncertainty’ that next year would have brought.. Now it’s all been punted.
Add that this is the most pro-union, anti-business Administration perhaps ever, it’s very likely unemployment may continue to uptick towards 11%.
This is nuts.
And let’s not even delve into ObamaCare and the 222 waivers (and counting) this Administration has granted.
Who will come to the rescue of America in 2012 — who can translate the angst felt and pain suffered by Americans? I’m beginning to think a certain Gulf-state governor may make a run for the White House, and I’d welcome his leadership.
