We need a “None of the above.”

I’ve been thinking lately about joining the (so far nonexistent) “Draft Chris Christie” movement.

It’s not about a purge. It’s about an insurrection.

You understand Christie's not Conservative?

which to me makes him conservative enough if he has someone further right on the ticket.

Education is the biggest long-term issue facing the country, even bigger perhaps than the War on Terror.

You don't think he is a SOCIAL conservative

pdawk Friday, December 10th at 1:58PM EDT (link)

Because you certainly can’t make the argument that he is not a fiscal conservative. He refused to raise taxes despite the budget crunch in New Jersey. He forced all departments to take across the board cuts. He is reforming the pension programs to make them significantly less burdensome.

With the financial state of our country I want someone who will get results. I want someone who is more interested in governing than getting their face on Fox News or selling books. I want someone who knows how to attract all Americans who are concerned about the financial direction of this country. I want someone who has had to face the worst the democrats could dish out and came out victorious. I want a guy that will get in your face, and as Truman said “I never did give them hell. I just told the truth, and they thought it was hell. … ”

I want Chris Christie.

He cut off state funding to Planned Parenthood.

Greg Garrison (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 2:04PM EDT (link)

Christie may not personally be socially conservative, but he took an unpopular stand with PP and probably reduced the number of state-funded abortions. His leadership has been very solid on education, unions, and the budget overall.

Will the SoCons accept someone making the right "moral" decisions for "economic" reasons ?

acat (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 2:15PM EDT (link)

Yes, he reduced the number of state-funded abortions, and therefore probably the number of abortions overall… but he did it for the “wrong” reasons ..

I don’t see Christie succeeding except maybe as an east-coast ficon addition to a non-east-coast SoCon candidate… i.e. Daniels/Christie or maybe Johnson/Christie. Someplace where he adds some needed east-coast grit and ficon sanity…

I am shilling for Mike Pence this morning as I voted for him over Huck. I could live with Huck, however but like Pence better. I did Mitch over Sarah.

I liked Haley over Perry because I got that Jowl thing going(early stage)plus Thune & Jeb.

I have always thought highly of Jeb. He was a great Governor and is articulate.

Please, God, not Jeb Bush

westforwestwing2012 (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 11:49AM EDT (link)

I flew to Florida when Terri Schiavo was being dehydrated to death by her former husband. I joined others who were lobbying the Florida Senate to pass the bill sponsored by the wonderful Daniel Webster (praise the Lord! He will be sworn into the U.S. Congress next month!) that would have saved the lives of Terri and others in her situation, namely, incapacitated people who have left no written directives and whose families are at odds about what the person would want.

The legislation failed, but Jeb Bush, as chief executive of the state, COULD HAVE taken state custody of Terri and thus protected her from her murderous husband. People BEGGED Jeb Bush to do this–begged and begged and begged. He wouldn’t do it. Instead, he submitted the matter to the same rotten judge who’d violated a dozen ethics standards already in condemning Terri, and the judge of course said no.

I think Jeb Bush caved because it was all just too hot a potato for him. We don’t need wusses in the White House, thank you very much. He wouldn’t stand up against the political correctness hyenas even when a woman’s life was at stake–how could you ever trust this man to stand up to the pressures that are brought to bear on a president?

Don't worry about Jeb

izoneguy (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 11:55AM EDT (link)

His Daddy & Mama & brother will convince thousands of folks to throw away millions of their dollars on a failed effort if Jeb was stupid or vein enough to run. He might get pushed into it. But the American voters won’t go Bush again.

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

That sounds like a song

Scope (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 12:15PM EDT (link)

The Americans won’t get Bushed again. LOL And it is only to true.

I voted for Jeb, but it was a tactical vote.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 12:42PM EDT (link)

I figured he’d be easier the easier to ditch on the next round of voting. David Petraeus is the right person to be leading the war effort, I don’t like the blank slate nature of the rest of that bid.

Don’t get me wrong, on a personal level I like Jeb. And I think if he had run instead of W, we would have had a better president. But at this point I think the country is bushed with having a Bush in office.

Huckabee: Highest form of life

chihank Friday, December 10th at 11:05AM EDT (link)

In the Mikes section, Pence is crushing Huckabee among Redstaters. However, Pence would gain little traction if Huckabee, Palin, and Daniels are in the primary. If Pence does run for Prez, I think Palin declines running for Pez and instead backs Pence in the primary. However even so, Huckabee would be a opponent for Pence. Many Evangelicals think because Huckabee is a pastor, he has the highest authority on matters. Plus, Huckabee’s calm, folksy manner gives him a telfon quality. A lot of people in church are willing to give Huckabee the benefit of the doubt on Maurice Clemmons.

Show us how Huck wins the election, though...

acat (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 11:18AM EDT (link)

He didn’t do very well outside of the South – wasn’t his high water mark the southern-skewed Super Tuesday, he dropped like a stone.

I don’t see Huck as a serious impediment to Pence. The teflon is wearing a little thin.

Seriously?

bjwilson83 (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 11:35AM EDT (link)

Huck is a close third in the polls behind Palin and Romney. His only problem last time was that he wasn’t well known outside the south. That’s definitely changed, and all indications point to a Huckabee candidacy at this point.

Now this "poll" shows Romney as the biggest loser of all.

Huckabee's plan of action

chihank Friday, December 10th at 11:45AM EDT (link)

Huckabee operatives are involved Iowa Right to Life groups and the Iowa Family Research Council. Thus, Huck would be the favorite to win Iowa again. Huck would let Romney take NH. Huck would be a strong contender for South Carolina. Also Huck no longer lives in AR. He and his wife recently bought a home in the FL pandhandle. Also Rubio did endorse Huck for Pez in 2008. Will Rubio do it again in 2012 and carry Huck in FL?

Huck’s biggest liability is the lack of money. Huck PAC raised little money in 2010. I believe Rick Santorum’s PAC raised more money than Huck PAC. However, Huck has done well with little money. Remember, Romney massively outspent Huck in Iowa in 2008.

FORMER Huckabee supporter

westforwestwing2012 (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 12:11PM EDT (link)

I like Mike Huckabee’s positions on most issues, and spent hundreds of dollars and made hundreds and hundreds of get-out-the-vote phone calls for him when he was running.

I don’t support him at all anymore, and I’m embarrased to say that I can’t tell you why. Just a bad feeling. It’s true about the teflon–and I think maybe I just don’t like teflon very much.

When I try to put my finger on something concrete, it always lands in the area of national security. One of the reasons I was so devoted to Huckabee back in the day was that he actually GETS IT about what drives the Muslims. Non-religious people usually don’t; they don’t have any frame of reference for people who are willing to die for what they believe. Huckabee does — but what bugs me is I don’t think he has much hawkishness to complement that understanding. Islam is a very, very immediate threat to our very existence. I want someone who will HAVE OUR BACK. You know from my username who that is.

Ditto on Huck.

bjwilson83 (Diary) Saturday, December 11th at 3:19AM EDT (link)

Hard to put a finger on it. He’s just so 2008.

westforwestwing2012 (Diary) Saturday, December 11th at 1:45AM EDT (link)

Good for you, aesthete, getting that reference. I sure don’t. Who is Nehemiah Scudder? And who or what is RAH?

Well, I could just point you over to Wikipedia...

acat (Diary) Saturday, December 11th at 10:11AM EDT (link)

and I probably should…but you can head over there on your own if you want to know more.

RAH is Robert Anson Heinlein. While he’s generally known as an early science fiction author, he was also an Annapolis graduate and Navy lieutenant, and more than an observer of the political scene.

Heinlein ended up with tuberculosis and, while on his back in a Navy hospital, designed an early practical waterbed. He put enough detail about it into his short stories to make patenting the things impossible when they became popular in the 1960s. (I think he owes a bit to E.E. “Doc” Smith on this point…)

He also encouraged his readers to get involved in politics – he was active himself, although on the wrong side for much of his life – and I see glimpses of RAH’s tactics for restoring citizens to their rightful place in the Precinct Project, and in the Tea Parties. (see here: http://www.webscription.net/p-1154-take-back-your-government.aspx – first chapter or two for free)

One of Heinlein’s earlier stories, “If this goes on …” posited a religious leader, Nehemiah Scudder, moving into politics and winning the presidency in 2012 .. and after manipulating the population through a series of crises, creating a theocratic state, and ruling by divine right. 2012 was the last election for nearly 100 years in that “future history”.

I brought it up for two reasons. First and least, RAH appears eerily prescient .. 2012 is the next election, Huckabee somewhat parallels Scudder…

More seriously, “If this goes on…” in some ways salted the earth between libertarians and socons – it’s an early enough influence to be forgotten (do you remember what you were reading in 5th grade?) but .. there’s an automatic distrust of theocracy or candidates who appear to have excessive religious populist tendencies.

This isn’t the only example of anti-theocratic fiction.. but most of it flowed around the SoCons – it’s not part of your world… The point being, a Huckabee campaign would have much to overcome, and it’s quite invisible to those most likely to be his supporters.

Let's be honest . . .

Ned Ryun (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 3:26PM EDT (link)

Huck won’t run (he likes money too much) and even if he does, I see no path to victory, especially since most of the tea partiers view him, justifiably so, as very suspect on fiscal issues.

I think

rdelbov Friday, December 10th at 12:26PM EDT (link)

Huck-if he becomes the alternative to Romney will have a great chance to win the GOP nomination. Poll after poll shows Huck in that 1st or 2nd close 3rd on a state by state or national basis.

In a GE with Obama poll after poll shows Huck to be the leading GOP candidate in a match up with the Prez. Only in MI -MN-MA has Romney done better.

I think Huck would easily hold the McCain 173 plus would the favorite to regain NC VA FL IN OH. Those states plus the re-apportionemnt get you to about 260. At that point you only need WI or MI or PA plus a combo of severals states like CO or NV or Iowa or NH. The Path for Huck looks as good if better then anyone’s.

Mind you I voted Mike Pence so I am not shilling Huckabee. I might add that Pence might be more acceptable in the Midwest but so far polls are not showing that.

If people want big government, they vote for the party that specializes in it.

Greg Garrison (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 1:18PM EDT (link)

And it’s not ours. I don’t see how Huckabee is a vote for a self-constraining government. A vote for Huck is a vote for big government conservatism more than any other candidate, I think.

I lump him with Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum– people whom I would support quietly and with extreme reluctance.

I would agree

Scope (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 12:24PM EDT (link)

that if Pence got in the race, Palin may back down, and that would be a good thing. I don’t agree that Huckabee would overtake Mike Pence. There is alot of animosity towards the retreds, and, other than a few here, I don’t think Huckster has a snowballs chance. For those who like Huck because of his “pastor” status, Mike Pence is equally as religious, and great on the Social issues, though he doesn’t focus on them. So far, Mike Pence is my guy if he decides to run. He is strong on all three Reagan stool legs, and, that is my ideal candidate. Pence seems to have support from a wide variety of voters, not the Ron Paul supporters though.

about Newt’s shortcomings. Also once Newt gets the nomination, the media will refresh our memories about the 1995 gov’t shutdown, Newt claiming to starve orphans on a balanced budget. etc.

I think Newt is running for 2 reasons: (1) To promote his organization, American Solutions and (2) To push the other priamry candidates to talk about his pet issues.

Newt: Brilliant, but lacking

westforwestwing2012 (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 12:21PM EDT (link)

I do respect Newt for his brilliance. The guy is a genius, and he scores very, very high on my Does-This-Person-GET-IT-About-
Islam index. Newt gets it totally.

Along with brilliance, though, a president needs to have character, as we know all too well!

I’d sure like to see Newt as an adviser of some sort to any Republican president. I wish I could get everyone in America to watch (or read the transcript of) Newt’s speech about Islam at the American Enterprise Institute a few months back. It’ll change the way you see the world:

The problem with Newt's brillance is

that it is too hit or miss.

Contract with America – Hit
Being ready for the PR onslaught afterward – miss

But their fun is just about over……

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

You’re right about that voice. (and accent, and phrasing….)
I know so many people who agree with Sarah on close to 100 percent of the issues, love what she stands for, but CANNOT STAND to listen to her. Sorry, folks, but in the real world, that does matter.

I've never had a problem with her voice,

The_Gadfly (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 1:04PM EDT (link)

it is her record I worry about. She has the instincts to say the right thing, but I don’t see that the talk has translated into accomplishments.

She's moved to the right after the 2008 loss,

SoulEspresso Friday, December 10th at 1:09PM EDT (link)

Palin & Redstate

chihank Friday, December 10th at 4:33PM EDT (link)

Perhaps, Palin should get together with Redstate and discuss what items the GOP House should pass in the first half of 2011. Palin could then bring attention to the issues that Redstate wants passed. Palin could say, “If the GOP House doesn’t pass these items, then I will run in 2012..”

Such a statement could make the GOP House leaders fold like cheap suits and stop making deals with Dem Lobbyists and get to work on passing the conservative agenda. This scenerio could give Palin an out for not running for President. Palin could then declare victory and endorse Pence for President.

I'd think she'd discuss it with all the GOP Congresscritters she just helped elect first ... [nt]

Bolton is one of the people who turned Clarence Thomas from the left to the right.

They remain fast friends, by the way.

Glaring omission

westforwestwing2012 (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 12:03PM EDT (link)

Erick, I am disappointed that you did not even mention Allen West. There actually IS a movement afoot to draft him for the GOP nomination — and it’s easy to see why. There is no other politician who has not only the deep historical knowledge of our mortal enemy, radical Islam, but also the day-to-day experience with Muslims, both as enemies and as allies, in the battle arenas of Iraq and Afghanistan; absolute fearlessness in the face of the political correctness jackals; not only a marvelous gift for oratory but also a voice that doesn’t grate on people’s nerves (sorry, but that does matter in the real world of politics); a deep, solid, thorough, firm understanding of and dedication to the Constitution, the Declaration and the thought processes of our founding fathers; many years of leadership in some of the most high-pressure situations imaginable, enjoying tremendous devotion from those he led.

To my knowledge, there are two things Allen West has never done: cave to political correctness; and lose his cool or be caught with nothing to say when interrogated by any journalist, no matter how crafty or hostile.

You cannot say this about any of the candidates on your list.

It could be interesting to pair him up against Petraeus

civil truth (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 12:45PM EDT (link)

But it really is difficult to go directly from the House to the presidency – Duncan Hunter never got any traction in 2008, and West would likely be in the same boat – insufficient awareness.

He’s below the radar at this point – I know you find him very attractive, but with him entering his first term, he doesn’t have government experience, which will work against him after our being burned by Obama who had little record either. Experience is not an absolute requirement – Herman Cain is from the business world, but experience in 2012 may be more dominant than in 2008 where there was no incumbent President or VP.

Overall, 2012 seems too early, especially since it will be hard to properly represent his constituency and engage actively in a run for President. And as you know, a true “draft” is almost impossible in an era of binding primaries. But I won’t flatly reject him – he does have some very attractive attributes.

Most were clearcut choices

civil truth (Diary) Friday, December 10th at 12:58PM EDT (link)

The last three were most difficult

Barbour vs. Perry was very difficult, as reflected in the even split. I gave Perry the edge because his public demeanor seems more fit for the combative battlefield the Republican nominee will face in the general election.

Daniels vs. Palin were like choosing between apples and oranges – and impossible to know at this time which style will be best for 2012.

Gingrich vs. Santorum

This is purse sadism on the author’s part, enough to send me over the edge.

Santorum wins the nostalgia vote, I guess – but he’s gone over to the Dark Side since then and is now a corrupt insider; nothing like he used to be when in office. His stabbing Toomey in the back in favor of Specter in 2004 lost him any conservative credentials in my book. His recent actions have put him beyond the pale.

But then there’s Gingrich – and my stomach starts growling and I need to go hug the porcelain.

We've GOT to change the primary system before 2012

westforwestwing2012 (Diary) Saturday, December 11th at 5:19AM EDT (link)

The reason we got McCain in 2008 was the disproportionate importance of the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries, as well as the “open primaries” in big states like Texas, where Democrats essentially got to pick our candidate for us. This is insane. Why are we letting Democrats vote in a Republican primary? And why do we let Iowa/NewHampshire/SouthCarolina determine everything?

System is broken, ignore early results.

acat (Diary) Saturday, December 11th at 8:57AM EDT (link)

To be fair, New Hampshire was at one point a conservative place. At this point, they’ve been overrun by refugees from the People’s Republic of Massachusetts so we get more squishies voting there.

Iowa is a fairly populist place, but it was, at one time, the political equivalent of “will it play in Peoria”…

In both cases, they’re now more a test of whether a politician can both put together a winning organization, and whether they can avoid a meltdown moment. (see Howard Dean) In neither case should we take the results too seriously.

As for open primaries, or their evil twin, “jungle primaries”, we are gong to have to start looking at how to close ‘em. As you say, why let the other side pick our candidate for us? (or, perhaps we just all agree to go “Operation Chaos” …)
