A Concern About Reince Preibus

UPDATE on Priebus: I had earlier noted the Anderson brothers backing Priebus. Apparently this info was conflated from the Anderson brothers doing work in Wisconsin for the state party. They are not, however, backing Priebus

————

I have a concern about Reince Preibus and it has nothing to do with whether or not he or his law firm helped communities get stimulus money.

Back in January of 2009, I raised the concern that Michael Steele was using Blaise Hazelwood to run his campaign for the RNC. The concern related to the willingness and ability of the Republican consultant class to glum on to their preferred RNC Chairman and bilk the GOP of gobs of cash.

At the time, Michael Steele, seeking to address the concerns I raised, sent out an email saying, “No member of the RNC staff will benefit financially from the RNC beyond their salary. The RNC will utilize a RFP process that mirrors best practices among national non-profit organizations. Contracts will be awarded strictly on merit.”

In fact, after Michael Steele won, Hazelwood, the Andersons, and others — all good people mind you — did in fact continue getting grand sums from the RNC. The RNC paid Hazelwood $761,000 for grassroots targeting, $48,000 for web advertising, and her husband received over $2 million. See here, here, and here.

Well, this year it turns out that the same cadre of consultants who backed Michael Steele in 2009 are backing Reince Preibus. I’m told that these same consultants were consultants for the Wisconsin GOP in the 2010 campaign cycle.

There is speculation among the parlors of Republicans interested in these games that Preibus is a moderate proxy for Steele to divide up conservatives — much like what happened in 2009.

I don’t think that is necessarily the case. But I do think it is a very troubling sign that the same consultants who pushed Michael Steele in 2009 and then went on to make large sums from the RNC are pushing Reince Preibus in 2011.

I believe that is EXACTLY what is going on. There is sleaze afoot and the RNC has lost so many donors over the past couple of cycles that I tell you if Reince gets Steele’s job they will never again collect the kind of money the DNC gets because WE The Grassroots have too many places to donate and too many candidates to donate directly to. They can decide as a group of 168 that the make up of the RNC is worth saving or they can all go down with the ship either way Conservatism will win the day!

Thanks for being on top of this.

Reince Preibus? You’re kidding, right? Not Van Jones or John Kyl or Scott Brown, but Reince Preibus?

So we now have criminals running our government, and they have names like something a sailor catches on shore leave. Great.

The elites are certainly shifting their handhold on the throat of our republic. And the shift is NOT being done to allow us a small gulp of air.

Sounds like a new candy or something you catch while traveling in a third world country. What happened to Anuzis? He did his homework and a lot of it for his interviews.

Preibus is capitalizing on the massive wins the Republican party had in Wisconsin. Someone needs to take a hard look at the backroom politics that occurred surrounding the party convention, where the party went ahead and endorsed candidates prior to the primary. Wisconsin republicans won big this year despite him not because of him.

So people are dissatisfied with Steele enough to oust him, but then choose the guy that orchestrated his election to chair in the first place? Do we really want another establishment, back room dealing lawyer at the helm?

Well, there is only one way ti ensure that the conservative vote doesn’t get split. We all back one candidate. I like Saul, but I trust Ann Wagner to never deviate from the conservative line. Last night, I sent my Maryland RNC reps an email urging them to support Wagner. Hopefully, the Maryland GOP has rid themselves of their infatuation with Steele.

if someone could post a spelling and pronunciation guide to this man’s name. If he’s using the German, the second vowel overtakes the first, but nobody follows the High German rule anymore.

I have to oppose him based on his parents’ inability to name him something simpler, like “Bob.” I can support a guy named “Bob.”

    Who else have we got?

Thank you for bringing up the real issues.

AK GOP Chairman Randy Reudrich. I also think she may have too much Bush on her.

So we have Bush, McConnell, Murkowski, Reudrich. That’s close enough to squsih for me to go elsewhere.

Having Michael Steele as chairman was like carrying around a bunch of bricks in your knapsack. The republican party is loaded with debt and should tread very carefully to choose the right chairman instead of adding a few more bricks. It?s true that the results of the election in Wisconsin were excellent, but really how much did that have to do with Preibus? The candidates themselves were outstanding and they ran great campaigns.
We should not only look at the victories of November 2 but also what we left on the table.Like many at Red State I contributed directly to the candidates,Jim Demint?s conservative campaign fund and the Republican Governors Association, but what did we lose for lack of a good GOTV effort by the RNC?

There absolutely needs to be a civil war to finish driving this scum out of the party.

for me, they have not received one dime and will not until they clean house.
Friends of “Dick Lugar” just sent me the four year form to help old Dick get reelected. It’s going back with a note and not cash same as the last few years.
Any spare money will go to conservative candidates and not some old and I do mean ?old? party line RINO member.
See if you can spend that “Dick.”

because Augustus VanDerHoevel III wasn’t available.

Does anyone out there think this guy hasn’t developed a determination that he belongs in our ruling class? I have a feeling he’d sterilize himself if he ever ventured out to a tea party.

Just what the Rs need if they are determined to give ammo to the people who are lobbying for a third party composed of citizens who support citizen legislators.

And fully support her, despite the slime-by-association that some seem to be engaging. She has been a very successful statewide and national GOP leader and pulled off a brilliant campaign for Blunt in 2010.

  • itrytobenice

If you think that because Bush liked her she’s bad, you’ve got a bit of BDS.

I want to know more about her, but I’ve heard enough about her competence to give her a hearing. For me, it’s between Ann and Saul.

But if Reeces PB cups wins it, we can write off any national help for or from the grassroots in 2012. The base won’t be sending the RNC money if a Steele lackey is in place as its head and the RNC will continue to treat the grassroots with open contempt.

  • texasgalt

    to have observed Wagner.

  • fpete13527

Still leaning toward Anuzis, however Wagner gave the absolute best answer when she said the Tea Party IS the HEART of the Republican Party. That went a long way with me.

I could accept either Anuzis or Wagner. I think either would get the job done.

I absolutely dont support anyone else on that panel for chair.

Steele spun and misrepresented much. He would be a disaster remaining as Chair.

Priebus was an ABSOLUTE NO NO NO and did poorly in the debate IMO Priebus would be a double disaster.

  • http://www.redstate.com/tnjim TNJim

about Priebus. I also read your diary and concur. If I can add anything to those concerns it’s that I don’t think he would be fully supportive of the Tea Party’s goals of returning the GOP to grassroots conservative principles ala Reagan.

Having the same consultants backing him as backed Steele only adds to that fear.

  • http://xmmlbchat.blogspot.com katesmith

Priebus himself is said to have steered clients to Porkulus funds. From a live blog of the debates, Priebus recently said, “we need to play ice with the Tea Party in the sandbox.” Where do these people come from?

  • kestrel

Bolton, former UN ambassador, current FOX News contributor and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, has endorsed Wagner. The American Enterprise Institute is a think tank that I believe is conservative. Michael Barone and Lynne Cheney are also fellows there, as is Newt Gingrich. The debate is airing again, right now, at 8pm, on C-SPAN.

Incidentally, watch Mr. Preibus’s face after he answers the question on defense of marriage about 1/3 of the way through the event.
