The Blame Game and Prayers Begin

Editorial Note: This morning, prior to this news, we were running a caption contest on this cartoon. We have suspended that contest and removed the cartoon from the front page.

—————————–

A terrible tragedy today. Rep. Giffords of Arizona was gunned down and, though early reports were that she is dead, the hospital is confirming, as of this writing, that she is alive and in surgery. 11 others were apparently shot and six others are dead.

I spent an hour with Rep. Giffords a few months ago. She and I were sitting in Jim Bohannon’s studio with Robert Reich was on the air. She’d driven him over to the studio. We chatted for an hour. We disagreed on much. She was extremely, exceedingly nice.

My prayers are for her and her family.

Unfortunately, the left is using this tragedy to score political points. Rep. Giffords was on Gov. Palin’s target list for defeat this past November. The left claims Gov. Palin has blood on her hands. So does the tea party movement.

Less than a year ago a gunman stormed into the Discovery Channel’s headquarters, taking hostages and threatening to kill them all. The left immediately accused the man of being a tea party activist.

Unfortunately for the left, the man turned out to be an envirowacko leftist raised on Algore’s global warming garbage.

Immediately, the left changed their tune and proclaimed that no longer could we as partisans accuse each other of causing things like this. There are just crazy people in the world and tragedies happen.

My, my how quickly they forget.

The truth is there is evil in this world. Evil exists where God does not and as we drive God further and further away, evil creeps in more and more. Today was not a random act of violence. It was a profound evil.

Let’s not pretend it wasn’t. Let’s not pretend evil does not exist.

But let’s not let the left, yet again, spin this against the tea party movement, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, or Sarah Palin inciting violence. That’s both a profound lie and just another, though lesser, bit of evil.

This is an attack on America, our institutions and our freedoms. Whoever did this, no matter his motives, acted out of deranged evil and anyone who tries to make political hay out of this is sick.

Before we are conservative or liberal, or left or right, or Republican or Democrat, we are Americans. This is tragic and could have far reaching consequences that hurt all Americans.

Again, this and all actions like it, are a direct attack on the United States of America and every good thing we have stood for over the last 234 years.

  • http://www.MuskogeePolitico.com jamisonfaught

Praise the Lord – the initial report of her death is being taken back. Reuters and some law enforcement are saying that she’s still in surgery, very critical condition, but NOT dead.

  • JadedByPolitics

I will tell anyone who will listen how despicable they are that while this woman clung to life how they ripped her humanity away to make a political point and suggest you all do the same until the crescendo is so loud they skulk away to the dark corners to which they belong.

  • gekster

    and in critical condition.
just the same, don’t quit praying.

  • runner12

Do you not care that this woman was a mother and wife? She is a human being and so were the others who were shot. They are not simply poltical fodder that can be tossed around.

Just because Palin wanted to defeat her in office or disagreed with her politically does not mean that she wanted her to be harmed. People, please have a heart. Our focus right now should be to pray that this woman will live and survive this tragedy ( Fox is reporting that she is alive, but in critical condition).

Make no mistake, this was an attack on the US. Someone shot at a United States Representative and her staff. This is a sad daty and I hope that the person who committed this crime will be brough to justice.

    Newspapers:

    - Arizona Republic is the state’s most professional newspaper, out of Phoenix
    - Arizona Daily Star is Tucson’s only “real” newspaper. Google: “azstarnet”

    Online papers:

The Tucson Citizen and Tucson Weekly will be the most pro-liberal. (Tucson Weekly is an alternative newspaper). If you’re looking for slurs on Republicans, they’ll most likely start here.

On TucsonCitizen.com, watch the following bloggers, whose disdain/hatred for Republicans is most white-hot

… and not one word on the perp’s race. (You KNOW the MSM would have posted it by now if he “looked” like a TEA party patriot)

Continued prayers for her, her family, and the other victims and their families.

It’s sad that the Left seems to almost jump with glee when something tragic like this happens because they see an opportunity to mine it for political capital, rather than being concerned about the victims involved. It’s shameful and tells you all you need to know about the most sick of the sick on the Left. If it comes out this was a protest against her immigration policies, watch how they all retreat like cowards.

Unfortunately, this is a call to arms on the leftie websites like Daily Kos – they want the guns taken away, the talk show hosts inciting violence off the air and they want this to be the end of Sarah Palin for “targeting” her during the elections. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but I don’t even put it past the libs to do things like this on purpose to further their goals and political figures. It is more likely that the shooter will turn out to be a registered Democrat than anything else. And we will probably hear Sarah Palin’s name this week more than Giffords. And the libs will not feel guilty about it at all.

  • throwback59

for one of the local papers, a Fitzpatrick, I believe. He started out saying this was the fault of the “Right Wing.” Disgusting.
May God have mercy on the victims and pray for the wounded.

  • silentcal2012

The left also jumped the gun on the loon who drove his plane into a building in Texas. His writings were full of anti-Bush hate. I think the also jumped the gun on the Fort Hood psycho, saying it may have been a right wing radical, then saying it had nothing to do with his Muslim background.

  • melbedewy

the Daily Kooks were making “jokes” about Scalia dying.
By the way, Giffords was a Blue Dog which on that blog is called a “Bush Dog”-a species they have repeatedly called on to be “exterminated”, “wiped out”, etc.

Here is a post from one JtinDc from Jan. 4 on that lovely blog:
” I will be dancing in the street on the day evil scumbags like Cheney and Scalia die. If any of them get buried anyuwhere within my geographic location I will make every effort to spit and pi*s on their graves on at least an annual basis.” followed up by one two Moms in AZ who states “I feel bad that I agree with you “.
Then we have another humanist called teachme2night chime in with “I can’t think of a single way Scalia could die that would fail to make me laugh out loud and dance a little jig.”

Somebody with more internet knowledge then I needs to save these posts before TV Markos deletes them.

Just heard CNN reporter keep prodding Pima County Dem committee leader until he got a gun control comment out of him.
Pima county leader’s main concern, rightly so, was the welfare of the injured, but the reporter couldn’t help himself….
Prayers for the Rep. and others injured.

May the One who was a source of blessing for our ancestors, bring blessings of healing upon Gabriel Giffords, a healing of body and a healing of spirit. May those in whose care they are entrusted be gifted with wisdom and skill, and those who surround them be gifted with love and trust, openness and support in their care. And may they be healed along with all those who are in need. Blessed are You, Source of healing.

    G. Giffords is my congresswoman, and I wanted to see her replaced by Jesse Kelly. Nevertheless, I am exceedingly sad to learn that she ? and others ? have been shot.

Prayers for all of them are in order, and also for our nation ? as I do not think that the people who boast of not letting a crisis go to waste will hesitate to further their leftist, anti-Constitutional agenda through using as a pretext this despicable incident.

    http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/01/democratic-rep-gabrielle-giffords-6-others-shot-at-arizona-safeway/69138/

The gunman, who may have come from inside the Safeway, walked up and shot Gifford in the head first. According to Rayle, who is a former ER doctor, Gifford was able to move her hands after being shot.

After shooting Gifford, the gunman opened fire indiscriminately for a few seconds, firing 20-30 rounds and hitting a number of people, including a kid no older than 10 years old. Rayle hid behind a concrete pole and pretended to be dead. When the gunman apparently ran out of ammunition he attempted to flee, but a member of Gifford?s staff tackled him. Rayle helped hold the gunman down while waiting for the sheriff to arrive, about 15-to-20 minutes later. The EMS came about 30 minutes later. Rayle said he was ?stunned? by how long it took medical help to arrive.

The gunman was young, mid-to-late 20s, white, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or while being held down, although he struggled at first. He was ?not particularly well-dressed?; he didn?t look like a businessman, but more of a ?fringe character,? Rayle said. The sheriff?s department arrived, arrested the gunman and cordoned off the parking lot.

You know…the funeral service that turned into a campaign rally? It was disgusting and the left’s predictable reaction to this tragic situation reminds me of that pathetic display. As Erick alluded to in the Discovery Channel incident, the left will use anything to gain an advantage politically – including using the possible death of one of their own at the hands of a deranged lunatic to do it. They are despicable and heartless – but fortunately, the God that many of libs do not actually believe in is in control, even when senseless evil like this rears its ugly head.

My prayers go out to the Giffords family and I hope that she will make a full recovery.

    Respectfully, conservativemusician

We’re not interested in speculation but waiting for the facts to emerge, which may take several days. the left has already started the same familiar litany, as the author described.

And the reactions are not equivalent – the left is already condemning right wing political figures and groups as responsible, the author and the rest of us are simply condemning the left’s script.

And pray tell me, where in the “tea party” movement has there been a call by responsible adherents for assassination? I haven’t heard it.

Thu Jan 06, 2011 at 11:07:17 AM PST

I am from the Tucson area and live in Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords’ district. I worked like a dog for her elections when she was in the Arizona House, surrounded by rightwing nutcases. When Arizona re-districted in 2002, a seat opened up and she was right smack in the middle of it. So was I because I live in Oro Valley, Arizona, which is at the heart of that – then – new CD. I was one of several people to talk her into running and pledging complete loyalty and pledging to raise as much money as possible for her.

She ended up running for the first time against a fellow AZ House member, Randy Graf who was a rightwing whacko who advocated guns in bars and was the “Russell Pearce before Russell Pearce” vis-a-vis border issues. With a LOT of hard work and plenty of money, Gabby won. Easier than thought, too. I never like to throw money in people’s faces, but i have given Gabrielle Giffords THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars in both good times and bad times for me financially.

    * BoyBlue’s diary :: ::
    *

Fast forward to this election season. A weirdo asshole named Jesse Kelly who advocated ELIMINATING Social Security and was a tea bagger favorite got the GOP nom to run against her. I am gay and had been married and my spouse left me January 15, 2010. I shot myself in the mouth in a serious suicide attempt, because of that. Barely surviving, I spent two months in the hospital and still have some paralysis. I did receive a severance from my employer, as i had been laid off in December, 2009. That may have been part of the reason my spouse left me.

Anyway, after months of physical and mental rehab, I got back into the political scene and started working for Gabby once again. I raised over $100,000 for her and maxed her out myself out of my severance, even though i still don’t have work and could not qualify for state aid because of my severance.

She wins her re-election and told me she was still a supporter of Speaker Pelosi at her victory party. We talked about how Nancy Pelosi was a successful woman and accomplished oh so much in just four years as Speaker.

Today, just a little while ago, I saw on Andrea Mitchell Reports (out of the one eye in can still see out of) that Giffords voted AGAINST Nancy Pelosi as our Minority Leader. Rhetorical question: I fought back from my condition and jumped in with both feet to help Gabrielle Giffords for THIS shit???

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is dead to me now. I won’t lift a finger, make one phone call, nor will i EVER vote for her in the future. And why did she do this? Giffords never told me she was conservative Democrat. And her voting record is okay. Damn.”

If this is true, and I am not sure it is, a friend of mine who is a psychologist has seen this type of thing before. Generally, psychosis manifests itself in late adolescence – early twenties. This man was nothing more and nothing less than psychotic. I would venture to say that law enforcement knew him well, as did campus police and Psychological Services at whatever school or university he attended, and it may come out that he had been involuntarily committed to the psych ward at a local hospital.

Whilst a lot of people on our side of the political spectrum don’t like big government, I think there’s a massive gap between wanting to reform entitlement programs (as the mainstream right does) and believing that people in authority are trying to brainwash people (as this nutjob does).

I did include the disclaimer about Libertarians because those calling themselves that today are not of the classic meaning quite like liberals are not either. Progressives have infested them all and changed their entire identities. I have seen those three supposed ideologies as I say swirling into the bowl of ideologies for years which is why I say it as often as I can so perhaps if there are true Libertarians or liberals left they can fix that which ails them.

If you look at his you-tube channel there is evidence of word salad, ruminating thoughts, racing thoughts….

I bet when they interview him he will be found to have schitzophrenia.

I think this will turn out to be a profound tragedy of a mentally disturbed and confused man.

Oh – and BTW what Paul Krugman just wrote make him an absolute tool

  • Jack_Savage

It needs to start with Barack Obama. A list of his inflammatory language would be very interesting to read. We could start with “hostage takers” – it’s OK to shoot them, right?

  • Jack_Savage

They are certainly highly disturbing, and quite sickening to see.

  • runner12

The ramblings he has made and his incoherence seem to point quite clearly to schizophrenia.

I don’t think this had anything to do with politics. It is the actions of a mentally disturbed individual.

Other than that, the page is blank.

Of course, liberal activists like “JoeMyGod” are busy putting out the message that this FaceBook page is “fake”.

Interestingly… Remember a guy named Jason Levin? The man who started a website back in April called Crash The Tea Party… The man who encouraged his follwers to infiltrate the Tea Party in an effort to dismantle the organization by destroying the Tea Party through faking events of racism and violence to turn public opinion against them?

Pajamas Media wrote a piece on him back in April of this year.

    http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/whos-behind-the-crash-the-tea-party-website/

A post on his website read:

WHO WE ARE: A nationwide network of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents who are all sick and tired of that loose affiliation of racists, homophobes, and morons; who constitute the fake grass-roots movement which calls itself ?The Tea Party.?
WHAT WE WANT: To dismantle and demolish the Tea Party by any non-violent means necessary.
HOW WE WILL SUCCEED: By infiltrating the Tea party itself! In an effort to propagate their pre-existing propensity for paranoia and suspicion. ? We have already sat quietly in their meetings and observed their rallies.
Whenever possible, we will act on behalf of the Tea Party in ways which exaggerate their least appealing qualities (misspelled protest signs, wild claims in TV interviews, etc.) to further distance them from mainstream America and damage the public?s opinion of them. We will also use the inside information that we have gained in order to disrupt and derail their plans
Sound like fun? ? It is!!

Paul Krugman is an idiot, and I would be more flabbergasted if anything coming from his blog actually made sense. I’m sure someone, somewhere, actually tracks violent acts by political affiliation, and I’d be willing to put a fair bit of my money up that violent acts by members of the left outnumber those by the right by a fair margin.

Having minimal insight into this tragic incident, Krugman is already willing to say that he knows exactly why this happened. When the full story comes out, and we find out that this murderer, far from being a calculating right wing operative, is a seriously disturbed man with a long and probably documented history of mental illness, one wonders if Krugman will apologize for jumping the gun, and being an idiot…again.

  • Jeffrey Malbis (malbis)

A woman who went to school with Jared Loughner is tweeting some interesting things about the shooter:

(Obvious caveat that there is no way to confirm at this time that she actually does know him, but the following is interesting)

“I went to high school, college, & was in a band with the gunman. This tragedy has just turned to horrific.”

“As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy.”

“He was a political radical & met Giffords once before in ’07, asked her a question & he told me she was ‘stupid & unintelligent’”

“he was a pot head & into rock like Hendrix,The Doors, Anti-Flag. I haven’t seen him in person since ’07 in a sign language class”

Her latest tweet is that Good Morning America has called her. It’ll be interesting to see if they actually put her on if she actually did know him.

Latest information seems to indicate that this person used political thoughts s merely the random bits of lettuce and tomato and Bac-o Bits in his psychotic word salad. If it weren’t the gold standard it’d be FEMA concentration camps or UFOs or lizard people. If this guy was a Tea Party member I’ll be surprised, and if he mentions Sarah Palin I’ll be doubly surprised. But neither would be relevant in any case since a causation implies some level of rational link, and the suspect doesn’t appear to be playing by those rules.

Society needs an early warning system for 20-something males exhibiting signs of a schizophrenic break — but that’s probably impossible because what gets defined as “insane” thoughts would probably be subject to political pressure of all sorts and we don’t want a revisit of Stalinist punative psychiatry…

It will be interesting to see:

    1. How the national media handles him. If, like most MSMers, they dislike conservative talk radio, let’s see what questions they DON’T ask him. If they throw him softballs, that allow him to dance away from the comments he made tonight (or at least not get pinned down on them)…well, that will just confirm what we already suspect about the MSM.

    2. What interviews the sherriff declines. It wouldn’t surprise me if reporters who would press Dupnik to really clarify his comments (e.g., Greta Van Susteren), can’t get interviews with him this week. But, don’t be surprised if Anderson Cooper and Morning Joe have him on the air Monday morning.

And neither of them is going anywhere, NOBODY from Tucson will get elected Governor in this lifetime and Joe as turned down the opportunity to run several times. Plus, he’s older than I am. A lot older.

But politics rule with AZ county sheriffs. I wonder sometimes if Joe drives it and the rest just react because he pisses them off.

  • http://rightthemes.com rightthemes

As the Left will predictably use this tragedy to attempt to stifle free speech and attack conservative radio, tv and Internet as ‘vitriol’ and ‘overheated rhetoric’, etc, it will be very important to point out that no less than the current President of the United States repeatedly uses language of vitriol and war; with talk of the opposing side as ‘hostage takers’, ‘the enemy’, etc, he has been absolutely the worse offender and we should hold his feet to the fire as well as the MSM as they attempt to spin this for their political advantage.

This has been an utter horror and tragedy, but we must not give any quarter in this struggle; modern politics is warfare of communication and there is too much at stake to let this event sway us from our goal of defeating the Left. We can not allow them a fee pass on any lies or misinformation that they will attempt.

Are things getting so heated that it’s time to consider extra security for Congressional Rep’s and Senators? Should they take some of that 5% they voted out of their own budgets and put it toward Secret Service protection? I think I’d support that expense to ensure our government functions properly.

My gut instinct is that at the end of the day for this he’ll turn out to be a seriously mentally deranged person who would have likely shot anyone coming out for an easily accessed local event on the day he chose to go kill someone. Like the guy who flew his plane into an IRS building the media will probably find that the whole real story doesn’t fit the template they tried to force onto the event. Then the media will drop the story like a hot potato.

Sadly many people get shut out or shut off from society and it doesn’t always take a long time to take the trip down the conspiracy/truther rabbit hole of redefining reality to fit this person seems to have walked himself into.

That some will exploit this tragedy for partisan political points is actually a total disgrace in their part that should warrant their removal from office, such as the Sheriff in question and others who are rushing to blame political enemies. But that’s just my opinion.

The tensions with school officials led to Loughner’s production of a YouTube video in which he declared the college illegal, the newspaper reports.

… and too often like other local politicians everywhere, the guy seems to get reelected each time only because nobody is paying any attention & his party affiliation happens to be the same as the majority of county voters.

That said, he’s now a national disgrace & everybody now knows it since it’s been so public. He has worked his hardest to ruin the case against the shooter, while at the same time attempting to scare the general public into panic & mocking his voters at the same time. As Moe Lane noted, Dupnik will not win reelection again.

But he really ought to just step down & resign from his office after his irresponsible behavior.
