Another Tax on the Poor

Liberals, with the signature of President Bush, have driven up the cost of being poor in this country yet again.

That’s right — beginning this year in California and next year everywhere else, the incandescent lightbulb is being banned.

Now, the environmentalists say that’s not true — the bulb is just being phased out for new energy efficient light bulbs. But it is the reality. The cheap incandescent is being tossed aside for LED bulbs, halogen bulbs, compact fluorescents, etc.

It will be a failure of the Republicans in Congress if the incandescent bulb goes away. The replacements are all more expensive, many of them more hazardous, and the result is an increase in the cost of living for the poor in this country.

amen EE, yes this is ANOTHER attack on the poor and middle class after their oil-price raising policies

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Monday, January 24th at 10:41AM EDT (link)

and food-price raising policies:

1) Restrictions on oil exploration since 1979, kept in place by Dems, that reduces domestic supply and thus raises the price
2) Oil drilling moratorium that restricts previously open areas and thus reduces supply and raises the price
3) Loss of good paying jobs in the oil, gas and nuclear industry, most of which would be available for the less educated
4) Continuing onerous restrictions on nuclear
5) Gargantuan deficits that kill the dollar and inhibit private investment job creation
6) ethanol subsidies that drive up the price of food and energy
7) etc ad infinitum

and now to add insult to injury, they quadruple the price and bring truly dangerous mercury bulbs into the home (these are the same people that are paranoid over second hand smoke that never hurt a fly) that require a 14-step clean up regime if a bulb is broken due to dangerous substance that can kill you in small doses.

Add the EPA's ethanol mandate to 15%

Beaglescout (Diary) Monday, January 24th at 12:48PM EDT (link)

Not only will it increase the price of gas at the pump and decrease your mileage by about 15%, but 15% ethanol will ruin every engine that hasn’t been retrofitted with new tubing. Who knows, it might even start a rash of engine fires when the ethanol polluted gas starts leaking in a hot engine!

I foresee ruinous class action lawsuits directed at ethanol producers, and hopefully, at every individual legislator who voted for the ethanol mandate and every department head who wrote regulations for it.

Ruinous lawsuits

edintexas Tuesday, January 25th at 10:50AM EDT (link)

I’m not a fan of tort actions, particularly class actions with no limits on liability and punitive awards. Legislators, and regulators working within the parameters of their position, are immune to legal action against them personally for their action. And the producers can hide behind the statutes and regulations to avoid any liability (even though they, along with the “Greens” seeking the destruction of modern Western/American society (IMO), bought and paid for those statutes and regulations with their lobbying).

I would be highly favorable to eliminating the mandates and subsidies for the rent seeking producers of the ethanol fuel supply. Let them compete in the marketplace (I believe the marketplace would reject this product entirely). Sadly, I don’t see that happening with either party in control. This is worse for the American motorist (and boater, RV/ATV enthusiast, homeowner using gasoline powered mowers, etc.), worse for the food supply of the world and worse for the wallet of American consumers.

That is total scam, worse than ethanol fuel

I had thought to say I’ll never live long enough to realize the purported savings from flourescent and/or LED lighting.

However, I’m thankful your gray matter retained many more reasons why there’s a never ending tax on Americans thanks to the unilateral actions of the rich, liberal, progressive, radical left-wing democrats.

And the country continues to return them to state legislatures, Congress and the White House.

I’m in ObamaCare’s “get sick and die” category. I fear my grandchildren will not enjoy America as folks my age did.

what about the mercury for Chinese light bulb

dsmurf (Diary) Monday, January 24th at 10:52AM EDT (link)

manufacturers? let alone the dangers of mercury in our own home? American Thinker has a great article on the mercury poisoning at a Japanese fishing village and its effects. So wherever all these bulbs are going to be manufactured there is this potential- -make sure you find the pictures toward the end of the article!
http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/01/the_mercury_threat_again.html

I will miss the incandescents that lasted a year at a time for a $1 a piece. I will detest the new flourescents when I go to the store and hope that these so called long lasting bulbs last at least a year LOL,
Am I the only person whose wife hates these flourescent bulbs?

No

mspector (Diary) Monday, January 24th at 12:26PM EDT (link)

Don’t like ‘em. The only thing worse than the bulbs themselves is that we are soon to be compelled to buy them.

I can’t understand for the life of me why people on here complaining even choose to buy them.

I never have and never will. Whether anyone will make a regular bulb that meets the standards devised by Jane Harman (D-CA) remains to be seen. If not, I’ll be setting up a lot of candles.

incandescents are harder to find,

dsmurf (Diary) Monday, January 24th at 6:49PM EDT (link)

my favorite incandescent vendor had bulbs rated at 130 volts and so they withstood 120 volts for a year at a time, now I can only buy GE flourescents at that vendor, needless to say I don’t buy them there anymore. That’s what happens when a solid Republican contributor teams up with the O’s EPA in Michigan for environmental browny points and protection from the government.
Eh?

On military government quarters at our two most recent quarters all they have are flourescents save for the leftover stash my wife has for our bedside lamps.
So much for choice. I wish the choices were readily available.
I’ve written elsewhere about flourescents and incandescents. I’ve seen the Der spiegel article where someone bought about 300 Euros of the last incandescents before they were banned there as well.

The California voters have been conned by PGE(California’s main utility), a subsidizing the cost of the bulbs; a govt mandate, I’m sure. right now you can buy them anywhere for around a buck. of course you pay the other $2 that the bulbs actually cost in your electric bill. And yes, like most “environmentalist” ideas there will be a huge downside as these bulbs start finding their way into the environment, and mercury poisoning becomes a problem. Halogen bulbs burn so hot that the fixtures frequently do not outlast the bulbs, and in each case, you have to go, and find the right bulb for your fixture. no longer will you be able to go and grab any bulb off the shelf, and screw it in. 2 pins? 4? linear? square? 13w? 18? 24?

how to clean up a CFL by energystar.gov

Common_Cents (Diary) Monday, January 24th at 12:45PM EDT (link)

You are supposed to turn off your AC or HEAT for SEVERAL hours! Yeah, do that in 90 degree weather or 20 below zero.

What about little kids always playing/crawling on the floor?

they also say we should take the bulb in a sealed container to a special recycler. I don’t think they even exist for CFL yet?

from energystar.gov

CLEANUP AND DISPOSAL OVERVIEW
The most important steps to reduce exposure to mercury vapor from a broken bulb are:
1. Before cleanup
a. Have people and pets leave the room.
b. Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor
environment.
c. Shut off the central forced air heating/air conditioning (H&AC) system, if you have one.
d. Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb.
2. During cleanup
a. Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder.
b. Place cleanup materials in a sealable container.
3. After cleanup
a. Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors in a trash container or
protected area until materials can be disposed of properly. Avoid leaving any bulb
fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
b. For several hours, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the
H&AC system shut off.

Common_Cents (Diary) Monday, January 24th at 4:43PM EDT (link)

Now, you need a recycling expert, a hazmat team to lay down tarps, you need a glass canning jar maker(no joke)to store the broken bulb, you need someone to run a fan and turn off the AC/Heat for hours!

This would be comical SNL spoof worthy, only if it wasn’t true.

Obama is going to generate millions of light bulb changer jobs.

Look at this long list from Maine.gov in CHANGING A FREAKIN LIGHT BULB!

What if I accidentally break a fluorescent lamp in my house?

cfl bulbs

The lamp contains a small amount of mercury, but you can clean this up yourself if you do the following:

* Do not use a vacuum cleaner to clean up the breakage. This will spread the mercury vapor and dust throughout the area and could potentially contaminate the vacuum.
* Keep people and pets away from the breakage area until the cleanup is complete.
* Ventilate the area by opening windows, and leave the area for 15 minutes before returning to begin the cleanup. Mercury vapor levels will be lower by then.
* For maximum protection and if you have them, wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the sharp glass.
* Carefully remove the larger pieces and place them in a secure closed container, preferably a glass container with a metal screw top lid and seal like a canning jar.1 A glass jar with a good seal works best to contain any mercury vapors inside.2
* Next, begin collecting the smaller pieces and dust. You can use two stiff pieces of paper such as index cards or playing cards to scoop up pieces.
* Pat the area with the sticky side of duct tape, packing tape or masking tape to pick up fine particles. Wipe the area with a wet wipe or damp paper towel to pick up even finer particles.
* Put all waste and materials into the glass container, including all material used in the cleanup that may have been contaminated with mercury. Label the container as “Universal Waste – broken lamp.”
* Remove the container with the breakage and cleanup materials from your home. This is particularly important if you do not have a glass container.
* Continue ventilating the room for several hours.
* Wash your hands and face.
* Take the glass container with the waste material to a facility that accepts “universal waste” for recycling. To determine where your municipality has made arrangements for recycling of this type of waste, call your municipal office or find your town in this list municipal collection sites (MS Excel format) (pdf format).
* When a break happens on carpeting, homeowners may consider removing throw rugs or the area of carpet where the breakage occurred as a precaution, particularly if the rug is in an area frequented by infants, small children or pregnant women.
* Finally, if the carpet is not removed, open the window to the room during the next several times you vacuum the carpet to provide good ventilation.

The next time you replace a lamp, consider putting a drop cloth on the floor so that any accidental breakage can be easily cleaned up. If consumers remain concerned regarding safety, they may consider not utilizing fluorescent lamps in situations where they could easily be broken. Consumers may also consider avoiding CFL usage in bedrooms or carpeted areas frequented by infants, small children, or pregnant women. Finally, consider not storing too many used/spent lamps before recycling as that may increase your chances of breakage. Don’t forget to properly recycle your used fluorescent bulbs so they don’t break and put mercury into our environment.
