Pence is Out

As many of you are hearing, Mike Pence will not be running for President. Many conservatives across the spectrum from fiscal to social had been rallying hoping for Pence to run. I was one of them.

While Indiana Republicans can rejoice at a stellar candidate with a clear field for Governor, conservatives looking for inspiration in the 2012 Presidential field will have to keep looking.

It is disappointing, but not unexpected. The field is now wide open for a candidate to shine with conservatives. I would only say that 2012 is not like 2008 and I think before settling conservatives are going to have to take a serious look at some of the fresh faces who might enter.

As for me, I am going to sit on the sidelines and do as I have always done — publicly weighing both the pros and cons of the field, no doubt making everyone mad along the way.

We should get behind Cain, and urge Palin (my second choice) to do the same. With her backing, he’d get a lot of press…

I’m not in sync with the last reason- not a big Haley Barbour fan, but I get chills when I think of a Cain/West, Cain/Rubio or Cain/Palin ticket.

Cain is a fantasy

His candidacy will be a distraction to conservatives’ ability to focus on a like-minded candidate who can win both the nomination and the election.

Rasmussen has a new poll out today that 60% of the 1000 people polled trust business leaders more than government to create new jobs.

Jobs and economy are major issues. Cain has a very successful private sector resume but no public sector governmental experience to speak of at all.

The idea of having someone who has been in the driver’s seat, so to speak, bringing a corporation back to life could appeal to a lot of voters right now, but would it be what this country truly needs first and foremost right now?

As to where Cain stands on his policies, you can check that out for yourself at his site.

Right now I do not feel comfortable to excited about _any_ of the candidates.

Two years ago I would have said Palin, but I do now.

I am intrigued with Herman Cain, but I know so little.

Heck no to Romney (romney care and gun control) and Huckabee (spending controls).

My preference would be Rick Perry of Texas, but like Pence, he is sitting on the side lines.

in that I thought there would be no way she could be stopped if she wanted the nomination. Unfortunately, there is NO way she can run any type of effective general election campaign with all the garbage thrown her way. There’s a part of me, though, that thinks she doesn’t even WANT to run for President.
I’ve heard Cain a few times sitting in for Rush, and I would have no problems with him running our economy. I just want to hear more about his solutions to national security issues, the border, etc, etc.
This is a critical time for the Republicans. If another McCain-type is nominated, the Tea Party will definitely sit this one out and give Obama a landslide, and four more years to enact more socialist crap layered on us.

Cain 2012

concap (Diary) Thursday, January 27th at 5:52PM EDT (link)

New party, inside old party

A 3rd party will not be an issue in 2012.

The only new real threat in 2012 is to the Tea Party movement.

Moderate Democrats forced to moved to the right-left wing of the Republican Party have joined forces with the Social First Conservatives that refuse to move to the right.

This will give the remaining Conservatives the power needed to place who they want in office.

Unless the number of Tea Party members increase ten fold, I fear we will end up with a Fiscal light (Bush) in office for 2012.

We need someone that is just as far to the right fiscally, as Obama was to the left on spending. Unless the Tea Party has total control over who gets elected, this will not happen.

Another Bush will totally crash the economy and guarantee a 3rd Party run in 2016.
That Party will do away with every thing outside of Article I, Section 8 “Powers of Congress”

Representative Pence does not have the experience, or base of support for a run this year in what will be a bloody affair. And the grand prize for hacking and slashing your way through the myriad of entrenched Republican candidates is a heavyweight fight with an incumbent president and the national media.

Pence will have a chance to build an impressive resume in Indiana and run in 2016. Smart move.

is chosen to run as v.p. in 2012, no matter who’s nominated for the top slot. It makes sense. It guarantees FL and probably AZ, NV, NM. He’s a huge plus for us. Imagine political ads with him talking in Spanish directly to Latino voters. He’s definitely on track to be president some day imo. Nobody else is even close. He’s got it all–conservative credentials, charisma, a beautiful family, intelligence, the ability to annihilate his opposition with a well-placed remark and a smile, political sure footedness, modesty combined with self-confidence. He’ll be huge some day–and most of his colleagues,I’m willing to bet, know this. He won FL in a landslide–a major state and a battleground state. And he’s still young–he’s got all the time in the world to plan his moves.

to want him to run. He’s got to believe in his gut he’s up to the job. I think Pence knows he isn’t–not yet. And being governor of a successful state like IN has got to have much greater appeal for him right now.

As for Ryan or Jindal–I don’t see either one of them making much headway for the top slot in the near future. Each lacks charisma. Jindal is smart but personally unimpressive. My problem with Ryan is that he knows the country is facing fiscal disaster but to him it’s an intellectual problem primarily. He doesn’t engage. The country needs a happy warrior–somebody like FDR or Churchill or Reagan. They were devastating to the opposition–but they were somehow able to be cheerful about it. Maybe it’s because they relished the fight. Guys like Ryan don’t.

Interesting analysis. I didn't really believe

earlgrey (Diary) Thursday, January 27th at 9:56PM EDT (link)

that Pence could win. I just didn’t see him being able to catch on outside of conservative circles, and being a republican congressman during a peiriod of repubican screwups, would count agianst him in my opinion. He needs to put distance between himself and the Republican Congress during the Bush era.

As much as I believe that, I am totally bummed that he sn’t going to run. I like Daniels, but I dont’ think he wants to run either (just as I didn’t think Thompson wanted to run in 2008). if your heart isn’t in it, than don’t run.

I thought the same of Bush 41 when he ran for his second term. He wasn’t into it.

you wanted Pence to run if you didn’t believe at the same time he could win outside conservative circles. If he couldn’t win outside conservative circles in the GOP, then he’d have even more of a problem in any general election. So it appears you were backing someone you were pretty sure would lose. If you don’t think a man or woman can win, why back that person? Why are you bummed that he decided not to run? Do you enjoy losing elections? Do you confuse an election for president with American Idol. Are you in it just for the fun of it?

savvy but cynical pols would count the states a candidate could expect to win if nominated. Our primary system all but ignores this hugely important dimension of the selection process. But it’s one we should be thinking about. Obama can be expected to win every blue state and be fiercely competitive in the battleground states because of high concentrations of black voters in those states. That’s a problem for us–and for some candidates more than others. We need to take a look at the map before we cast our votes so casually.

There used to be a name for that kind of thinking....

acat (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 9:39AM EDT (link)

“Country Club Republicans”… the ones for whom winning is the thing – if they can’t find a way to win, they don’t try, instead they roll over on their backs and hope the Dems will be nice.

That may have worked, back when there were actual blue dog Dems – the term originated for southern conservatives who, given that no southerner would vote Republican, had to run as Democrats to win… It no longer has any meaning except historically.

Yes, a state-by-state analysis has to be done, but .. I would prefer to do the analysis of the candidates and pick the most conservative one I can get, then figure out how to win the electoral college votes needed.

Pence was a very good fit for this strategy…

No, it's called winning elections.

writeblock Friday, January 28th at 11:42AM EDT (link)

Country Club Republicans are well-born, fiscally middle of the road, and exceedingly courteous to the opposition. There’s no real fight in them because the feistiness has been bred out of them.
They can fight dirty at times–but only when their dominance is threatened within their own party. Then they get ticked off big time. It’s a mind-frame that still controls a good part of the party by a primary process that’s weighted toward their guys. They get nervous around tea partiers who are fed up with all their niceness and tolerance of compromises that tilt toward the left and with all the usual back room deals that keep their guys ostensibly on top. There’s precious little fight in them and a whole lot of willingness to get along. They are anything but revolutionaries.

That’s got to end if we want to take over the future. We can’t keep shutting out voters in battleground states while giving voters in tiny NH undeserved influence. The primaries should match the general election in terms of which states or regions have the greatest influence. That wouldn’t please the country clubbers, but it sure as hell would please a majority of rank and file Republicans who feel left out of the process.

of political outcomes, and so I am bummed because Pence was my best choice of the field. Just because I didn’t see a path for him to win, doesn’t mean there wasn’t one there. All the other candidates have real problems (IMO), but the only problem I saw wtih Pence was his ability to engage the electorate.

That may not have been a problem. No this isn’t fun for me at all. Perhaps if the Republican party hadn’t done so much to marginalize real conservatives in the past sevearlal years we might have better choices.

You underthink it.

Your response tells me you haven’t thought this out. You’re far too casual about who you support. You need to keep uppermost the need to defeat Obama. That should take priority over everything else. If you think a candidate can’t win, then he shouldn’t get a second thought from you. You certainly shouldn’t feel disappointed–not unless you don’t much mind if Obama gets a second term.

Newt has a book tour coming up. He will make his decision on 2012 after his book tour. Ditto for Tim Pawlenty. Thune and Haley Barbour will decide in the spring. Jon Huntsman is thinking about running. With Pence out for Prez, Daniels might give 2012 a serious look. Are Rudy and Bachmann pretenders or contenders? The 2008 Retreads like Huck, Mitt, and Sarah are taking a later than sooner approach to the 2012 primaries.

Thus for the next couple of months, we can debate until we’re blue in the face over candidates who may or may not run.

My take...

writeblock Thursday, January 27th at 8:49PM EDT (link)

Pence is doing the right thing and the smart thing. He was not the right man for what we need right now. Neither is Newt whose political judgment is poor. He’s an academic, not an executive. Pawlenty and Thune are both too gentlemanly for my taste. I want a warrior this time, somebody who’ll take on the lies of the left with a certain amount of feistiness. Daniels has a good record–but I’m not sold on him yet. I never did take to Romney who’s too glib and phoney for my taste–but he could win and that’s a plus. He brings a certain amount of business acumen to the table despite Romneycare which is a disaster. I like Barbour but nominating him would mean another Southerner and another close election–Bush anyone? But he’s got the feistiness, the savvy, the record. He’s more than competent. Bachmann is way over her head–like Pence. She is a good conservative like him, she says all the right things like him–but she’s as lacking in credentials as he. Huck is a huckster pure and simple. DeMint is the real thing, but I doubt he’d make a good executive and I doubt he could get elected unless Obama really collapses down the road–which he shows no sign of doing, not with the media propping him up and the black vote in his pocket. I doubt Sarah wants to run.

That, to me, leaves Rudy. He’s got everything I want–courage, intelligence, the ability to articulate policies convincingly, executive brilliance, reformist instincts and toughness. His promise to nominate strict conservatives cinches it for me. He can take on Obama and wipe him out in places like PA, OH, NJ and CT. That’s a huge advantage as far as I’m concerned. And he’s a fighter.

I'm a big fan of Rudy

Now we have two separate races and in all probability two different winners. As odd as it sounds, the biggest beneficiaries of Pence’s decision may Rudy and Daniels, since they can run more purely economic conservative campaigns in New Hampshire without a true Reaganite like Pence to worry about.

Oh, goodie...

writeblock Thursday, January 27th at 10:40PM EDT (link)

He would have won IA and NH. How many electoral votes would that have given him? We’ve got a primary system that borders on madness. We worry about what voters in IA and NH think–and ignore voters in PA and OH. Nothing could be dumber or more destructive politically. Michael Barone made this point in a column this morning. Our primary systems are ill-designed to pick good executive leadership for this country.

Case in point...

writeblock Thursday, January 27th at 10:49PM EDT (link)

Reagan lost NH by 2000 votes–which gave the nod to Ford–who then lost to Carter. Reagan always had a tough time in primaries. Ours is a stupid system that is something of a crap shoot. It puts the destiny of the world in the hands of a few farmers and villagers. An overhaul is long overdue. Reagan was past his prime when he finally made it–but thank God he did.But we missed out on his best years.

Do you even bother to read what others say, Block?

acat (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 10:25AM EDT (link)

Your repeated rejection of the primary system grows tiring. There are several good things about it that, because of your now veiled focus on electing Rudy, you refuse to see.

A primary that starts in a big state would result in a tremendous expense, eliminating all the poorly funded underdog candidates. Some of these underdogs go on to wini, but your way they won’t even compete. If you really dislike the establishment, why make it easier for them?

A primary that starts in a big state would result in an argument to retain a candidate who is later proven faulty. Imagine if Howard Dean had won Pennsylvania before his “Dean Scream”. “We can’t get rid of him, he’s got X electoral votes already!”

Also, the primary system forces candidates to try and compete in three of the most different – politically – parts of the country; the northeast (NH) the midwest (IA) and the South (SC) … this is a good way to filter out candidates who do not have a broad appeal.

The current system is not perfect, but your replacement proposal would not make things better .. it would in fact make it harder for a true conservative to win. Reagan would never have stood a chance at taking Pennsylvania first.

I don't buy your take on this...

writeblock Friday, January 28th at 12:03PM EDT (link)

The Democrats had–and have–a fairer process that included my state, PA. Their primaries lasted far longer than ours which ended pretty much after FL. This was by design. The GOP establishment wants a quick selection process to get a leg up, supposedly, on the opposition by means of early campaigning for the general. But the system is self-defeating because it is indifferent to the relative strengths of candidates and gives us candidates like Dole and McCain, ideologically bland for the most part. A first rate conservative like Reagan lost the first time around by 2000 votes in NH. The second time around he barely won the nomination by a slim margin in NH. It’s not a process that gives us the best man or woman or the best chance of winning in the general.

You can dislike my take as much as you like, Block.

acat (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 12:17PM EDT (link)

There are two ways to change it. The first is to rub lamps until you find one with a genie in it, then ask him to change it. The second is to follow ColdWarrior’s advice, and get inside the local GOP – then vote for change.

As far as having a quick selection process, that’s a Good Thing – gives the Repubs enough time to jostle a little after the selection. We seem to need this more than the Dems. The reason we had Dole and McCain and Bush 2.0 is because not all conservatives were engaged early in the process, but the establishment was.

As for Reagan, he could have won NH with a better organization… and going into 2012, there are plenty of conservatives engaged, actively looking for a good, solid conservative candidate to get behind. Not all agree on who that should be – which is how the process is supposed to work. The establishment can’t game it if we’re actively paying attention.

That said, we need someone who can bring at least some of the establishment to the voting booth as well…. we need more than just the white house – we also need congress and the state capitols, eh?

Which reminds me. What did you think of Gov. Ridge?

you are trying to convince wood that the fire is hot and there is no way you are going to do that.

Even if you went with his nonsense and allowed for the fact that PA should be first, his theory has a ton of holes in it.

1) A candidate still has to win a certain amount of states in order to get the nomination. Even if Rudy had been able to pull PA, which he was not winning, he would have still had to take SC, TX, CA, NY, NC, FL and so on, all of which he was behind in. Give Rudy PA, OH, NH, and he still did not have anywhere near enough support to get the nod. His entire premise is child like and is as ignorant as it comes. It borders on absurdity and is akin to claiming McCain would have won had the results from Ohio come first and had they been allowed to vote for an additional two hours.

2) No one made Rudy drop out. He dropped out because he was losing in every poll in CA NY, PA, and OH even in his own internal polls. So the nonsense this guy keeps spewing makes no sense. He was not going to take the count in PA, he was not even close enough to get second place. And the fact that he could not even win the race in his own home state, no matter the reason, shows his zero chance of beating anyone. None of the other guys were losing in their own home state, but Rudy was.

3) Rudy sunk his own campaign, the way the primaries are set up did not. He chose to ignore three very pivotal states, he chose to not campaign, he chose to drop out rather than fight it out. All the nonsense blockhead keeps spewing is irrelevant and pathetic. His grasp on politics is slim to none and I believe he is nothing more than a Moby here to cause strife. I say that because no one with any common sense would continue to beat a dead horse so much and would not continue to repeat the same nonsense day after day after day even though it is obvious all that they say is nonsense.

He has posted 99% about this nonsense and is yet to make any type of reasonable case. He seldom participates in a conversation other than Rudy or where he does not insert the loser into the conversation.

The best thing to do with this guy is walk away, shake the dust from your shoes off on his area, and ignore the fool.

Hinz rule, then. And yes, fire is hot, water is wet, etc. [nt]

You need to get your facts straight.

writeblock Friday, January 28th at 5:27PM EDT (link)

Rudy was ahead nationally. He was beating the hell out of both Hillary and Obama. He was WAY ahead in PA, my state, by double digits–ahead of any other Republican contender. He was ahead in NJ and CT. You’re spreading absurd disinformation to declare otherwise. Heck, he was ahead in PA even AFTER he dropped out!

What you call “pivotal states” are inconsequential in general elections. They’re designed for quick wins for the same old bunch of good ol’ boys–the Doles and Huckabees of the party. They’re lethal for anyone from NY or NJ. To show what I mean, try running Huckabee in the NE and see how many votes he’d get–or Thompson, for that matter. New Yorkers are not big in places like IA or SC, places full of farmers who care a lot about a candidate’s stand on ethanol and very little else–and full of evangelicals who care about pro-life and very little else.

The system is broken–because it is a crap shoot and because it’s fundamentally undemocratic. Not that Rudy ran a stellar campaign–but he was AHEAD, not behind, in every major national poll–and in all the battleground states. That should have counted for something–and it didn’t.

Rudy was ahead of the Dems

Raven (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 6:40PM EDT (link)

But behind the Rs. And in the Primary, whether he’s ahead of the Dems or not doesn’t matter. He never got the chance to face them. He lost because the Republican voters didn’t like him enough to make him their candidate

When Raven?

PowerToThePeople (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 6:45PM EDT (link)

Late 2007? If that is the date you want to take as being what you mean, you are wrong on both counts. He was beating most of the R’s and the D’s in late 2007. After about August of 2007, his lead on the both sides fell and by early 2008, he had no leads over anyone except in Florida which he also quickly lost. He was not even winning against anyone in his own home state NY or its sister city NJ.

Write had been beating this nonsense since the day he showed up yet he has not shown a single fact to back his nonsense up. When I listed polls a while back, he simply excused them as being wrong. He is acting the moron part and whatever he could offer this site has been long shot to crap by his incessant nonsense.

Not going to play

PowerToThePeople (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 6:40PM EDT (link)

this with you again. I already posted info on the polls for you and you made some other excuse. You are so full of crap and what is amazing, is you think no one knows.

The last time Rudy led in PA was in August of 2007. From that point forward, he fell in numbers. It was also this poll put out by Quinnipiac poll that shows his last lead in PA and nationally over Clinton. See the one thing that gives you away, is that up until about June or July of 2008, Clinton was the assumed nominee and few polls used Obama versus any republican since he was not assumed to win.

By January of 2008, Rudy was losing in PA OH SC CA NJ NY IA NH and he was in trouble. He was beaten in every head to head poll with Obama except in Ohio at this point in July of 08. He had fallen behind nearly every candidate except Brownback and Paul.

He chose to ignore the first caucuses and straw polls because he believed he would take Florida, which he had been leading in almost up to the moment they voted and he thought he would take enough votes on super Tuesday to win the nomination. As Florida got closer, his poll numbers dropped, and people turned against him, he was in trouble. He lost in Florida and with his own internal polling showing he was down in every state that participated in Super Tuesday, he dropped out. He was behind in his own home state for petes sake which is telling about his popularity and how far it had fallen come 2008.

You keep stating he was winning in PA, show us the damn poll. You made the claims, prove them. You don’t because you have no clue as to what you are talking about. Your facts end in late 2007 and even then, I do not know of a single poll that was taken with him versus Obama. He was “ahead” of Clinton at that time but by August, his lead had gone from over 20 to under 6. And when polls were actually taken with a head to head with him and Obama in 2008, he did not beat him in the states you mentioned nor on the national stage.

I almost never use WIKI, but even a quick search using them shows this info an shows you to be wrong. But prove us dummies wrong Block, show us your facts. I showed you polls once before concerning PA and other states and you simply excused them. So show us the polls where he was beating Obama and winning PA anytime after August 2007. I agreed to an extent with you that he took an early lead due to 9-11, his catchy donate $9.11, and his very popular name and service in at the attack, but as more and more things about him came to the surface, the other nominees got into battle mode, and people were no longer enthralled with Rudy, his lead went away in almost every state. He admitted as much in his “I quit speech.”

You keep talking nonsense about PA being screwed yet you have either no common sense or you are simply a bad pretender. Put PA first, hell give them all the time you want for the candidates to visit and campaign there, let Rudy win it (which in order for him to do they would have had to hold their primary in late 2007) and he STILL has to win in SC FL CA TX IA in order to win the nomination period. PA and OH are not enough to win the nomination and since he could not even win in NY NJ and MI, he would have had to take all the states you seem to think screwed him. So what would have changed, not a damn thing.

Now show us the polls showing him beating Obama in 2008 and show us polls where he would have won in PA in 2008 or move on. Your incessant nonsense shows us all your fool status and lack of any intelligence. Show us or move on as so far all you have done is trap that useless hole in your face and have not proven a thing except the serious character flaws in you. Show us big mouth….

The solution to the problem you pose would be to let the small states go first as usual but to allow candidates to win proportionally. I don’t like the system either, or paying high income tax rates or athlete’s foot for that matter. But you can’t wish away reality.

I was referring to the nomination rules, not the number of electoral votes in the general election. Pence was unique in his potential to win both of the two biggest contests in presidential nominations.

Without Pence, it’s very hard to see how the conservative movement is going to coalesce around one candidate. And the candidates are going to need to choose either Iowa or New Hampshire to make their stand. All the candidates need to go all-in in one or the other.

Iowa: If Palin and Huckabee both run, say aloha to Newt, Pawlenty, Barbour and Thune. Santorum never was serious and neither is a Cain candidacy.

New Hampshire: Romney, Daniels, and Rudy are the only ones who can win that one.

It will be the Iowa winner versus the New Hampshire winner through the rest of the primaries.

My point was that Pence

might have won IA and NH–but so what? How does that help us defeat Obama?

I disagree with Rudy’s stands on social issues. But I will say he is more honest aobut his views than a Mitt Romney, who changes his views every 5 weeks.

Rudy may be making noises about running for President just to increase ticker sales at the GET MOTIVATED seminars that he’s involved with. Plenty of money to be made just give the impression that you’re running for President.

Palin kept mentioning herself as a potential candidate while promoting her book and TLC show. I suspect Newt just wants to promote his American Solutions group. Michelle Bachmann is probably just trying to raise her profile.

There is truly a certain something about Mike Pence that a lot of people do not know about. I knew Mike Pence before he became really popular. He lost twice in 1988 and 1990 for a US House seat to the incumbent D, Phil Sharp, The 1990 campaign is the most dirty nasty mud slinging contest I ever saw in Indiana. Mike Pence went thermonuclear in his attack against Phil Sharp for being a dirty rotten scoundrel who stole people’s money in a real estate deal. I mean it got real ugly. After that happened Mike Pence changed his life. Never again was he going to ever fight so dirty to win a political election, and never again did he run to unseat an incumbent. Phil Sharp was defeated in 1994 by David McIntosh, and Mike Pence waited until 2000 to run for that seat when McIntosh vacated it to run for Indiana Governor. Mike Pence is a good conservative, but he is a happy warrior who prefers to run for an open seat than to be talked into running down and dirty against an incumbent.

Someone like Gingrich.

Someone who knows his way around politics and how to watch Cain’s back till he learns how things work.

It seams to me in the past, we would throw in a no nothing, no body VP who’s only qualification is that he is right. Someone who may have to take over two weeks after taking office and hope for the best.

There is no reason we can’t put in someone like Gingrich as VP, who’s qualifications are well known.

If we put in a well qualified VP to assist Cain, we will have both ends covered.
Note: It does not have to be Gingrich. Just someone who knows his way around politics.

NHConservative0227 (Diary) Thursday, January 27th at 6:24PM EDT (link)

First Erick, if you truly do like Palin as you have stated in the past, then I expect you would actually give her a chance should she decide to run. Every conservative is going to be “radioactive” so we shouldn’t base our decisions on that.

I think Palin is the best conservative candidate that can beat Obama. She has 16 years of executive experience and has been the one figure who has withstood an avanlanche of hate-filled smears yet continues to rip apart Obama over the course of the last two years. Palin has already written multiple pieces of her policy positions (such as dealing with Iran, QE2, energy, and her eloquent response to the SOTU on facebook today).

As for her being “radioactive” and “unelectable” :

The American people will hear from her in the General Election and they will get to see her debate The Media’s Creation. They will be surprised when she wins the debates.

She will win the debates because:
1. The majority agree with her on the policy issues.
2. She will not be trying to defend a putrid record.
3 She will have a firm grasp of the issues.
4. She’s not afraid to point out that The Emperor Has No Clothes.

At the end of the debates those who had judged Palin without actually seeing her speak about the issues will say WTF and they will not trust the media.

The media will not be able to protect Obama in the General Election.

Palin can't get beyond platitudes .....

davidabippus Thursday, January 27th at 6:43PM EDT (link)

The reason that I cannot take Palin seriously is because she can never get beyond her canned responses and platitudes and break issues down. She evidenced this in her ‘WTF’ interview with Greta (link provided below). At about the 2:55 mark, Greta says that lowering taxes will mean less revenue to the treasury. That is not true. It has been proven time and time again that lowering taxes will increase revenues to the government (see Coolidge, JFK, RWR and GWB). Palin lets that slide right by and then goes to her mantra of Obamacare, Cap and tax, etc. She had to go for the ‘WTF’ soundbite instead. She had a great opportunity to pounce on Greta’s comment and defend supply side economics and actually break down an issue. She doesn’t ever do that, however.

Just as anyone who writes something on facebook must know that once it’s there, it’s there forever, and it is subject to public release should it be necessary for whatever reason. Think Jared Loughner, and the computer forensics done with his computer, and released to the public.

I don’t know what emails will be found or released concerning Palin, but, as a high profile, public figure, she used very bad judgement in using public computers to communicate possibly damaging information.

I believe becker had commented about his large company having the right to fire any employee using company computers for personal purposes. He is correct. The computers are the property of the company/employer, and they get the last say in it.

The problem isn’t so much Palin as some of the people who support worship her. They are as incapable of rational thought as Ron Paul supporters. There are a number of very rational Palin supporters here who take part in good discussions about her potential candidacy and one of them is azaeoprof.

And BTW, he’s right about the emails. And you can bet your boots there will be plenty of stuff in them that will be painted as ugly by virtually all of the press and that same stuff will be labeld as no-big-deal by her worshipers. The truth will lie somewhere between, the only question being where, and I suspect they will not help her with independents (and I’m not sure anything but time will do that) and skeptical Republicans.

And I think she’ll beat Obama in the general. Independents will have to choose between capitalism vs. socialism and I think the majority prefer free markets.

I disagree. I won’t count her out so easily. I like the way she speaks. It’s very easy to understand and to the point for ordinary people who may not be so involved in politics or understand complex economic theories. Unless she makes a big mistake in the coming months, so far she is my favorite candidate. I also like her libertarian leaning positions. If she does choose to run I am willing to put in my time and money to the extent I’m able to.

What seals the deal for me is the frenzied attacks from establishment types and liberals.

In my fantasia type ruminations euphoria sets in thinking about a Palin/ Backman ticket. It would destroy the Democrat party as we know it and make the current president a 1 term phenom

It would also be a 1 term phenom

I don’t think Guiliani should be on the big ticket in any form. He’s had his chance and was vetted and didn’t get the nomination primarily because of his very liberal positions on key issues, like abortion. I would not support him in the primaries if he ran again. Guiliani would be great as Attorney General, though. DeMint – great. Love his consistently conservative positions and how he stands up to the opposition in both parties. To me, he is a very attractive and articulate candidate.

I would not turn down Giuliani as AG

His talents lie primarily in cutting budgets and standing up to special interests, like the teachers unions in NJ. However, he’s just too moderate on other issues for my taste, so I don’t see him ever winning over the southern Republican conservatives.

Concap, can I ask a question?

lineholder (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 12:31AM EDT (link)

You see, I consider myself to be a social conservative. I do look at how the legislation that is passed influences our society as a whole. I keep seeing comments that posters make about Social first conservatives and it conveys a negative connotation. What is your definition of a Social conservative?

Here’s where I stand on things…I think we’ve hit a point morally and ethically in our country where if the situation doesn’t change soon we WILL go in the direction of lawlessness and anarchy. There will not be any degree of moral integrity or common decency to prevent it.

Take some recent events as examples, such as the abortionist in PA and the situation with 2nd-graders having oral sex in the classroom in CA. The moral standards in both cases are very LOW, concap. Those are societal examples.

I do not now nor will I ever see government as the means to solving this, BUT neither do I want to see government spending public funds on programs that encourage a continuation of this moral decay either, which is where the fiscal issues come into play.

How does where I stand compare with what you and some others call “Social first conservatives”?

Not concap, but I'll try answering anyways

aesthete (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 1:39PM EDT (link)

My views seem very similar to yours in the sense that I am concerned about morality in society at large, but in that I don’t see government as an appropriate tool to fix it. I think that you can make a lot of headway with fiscons and the like by pointing out that your money and theirs is being spent on promoting immorality: most will want to get government out of it, and those who wouldn’t probably don’t make for good partners, anyways.

I think that when concap talks about “social first” conservatives, he is talking about conservatives who rank social issues very high, but who either don’t have preferences when it comes to size of government or who don’t give those preferences high priority. President Bush would probably count as one, as he expanded government (or allowed Republicans to expand government) in a way that would have been unconscionable to a “fiscal first” conservative, ditto Mike Huckabee. From what I understand, concap believes that social conservatism is a natural outgrowth of fiscal conservatism, and that forcing it into prominence means losing the impact of both social and fiscal conservatism.

“It is a popular delusion that the government wastes vast amounts of money through inefficiency and sloth. Enormous effort and elaborate planning are required to waste this much money.”
-P.J. O’Rourke

aesthete, thanks for the response.

lineholder (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 2:07PM EDT (link)

I’ve had problems understanding where some of the vehement refusals to even consider the societal aspects of the issues has come from.

Just because some people look primarily at the fiscal issues and other people look at the fiscal through the social…this doesn’t have to be a divisive point, not even amongst ourselves.

When

concap (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 2:21PM EDT (link)

I use the terms Fiscal First and Social First, it includes all conservatives on the right, equally.

You can’t be one without being the other, they are formed from the same root.

However one can take priority over the other. There in lyses the difference.

Most Tea Party movement members are Constitutional Conservatives, which by default makes them Fiscal First Conservatives.

They have social issue concerns just like you, however they believe these concerns are a personal matter and choose not to involve the Federal Government.

Their priority is the smallest Federal Government possible and a free market economy to provide money to help handle their social issues on a State and local level.

The Conservatives who’s social concerns take priority over a smaller government I call Social First Conservatives.

All social concerns are personal, and moral in nature and should be handled on a State, local or home (personal) level.

We are not asking you to change your priorities on a state, local, or personal level. Just Federal, To use the Federal Government to handle social issues is to FORCE by law people who do not feel the same way as you to comply with your wishes and concerns.

The Constitution was not set up to handle personal social issues.

Unless you try to read into it or jerk things around, Constitutionally, this is the only powers the U.S. Congress has.
http://www.usconstitution.net/xconst_A1Sec8.html

Most all the things added to the Federal Government after 1910 are the reason we are were we are today. If we had no Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, EPA, Education Department, FCC and all the others, the Federal Government would not be in debt.

All social matters placed on the Federal Government to resolve, cost money, thus making me pay for other peoples personal issues. I don’t make anyone pay for mine because I vote no to all social issues whenever I can.

Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan said during a June 2009 the Hudson Institute conference speech:

A “libertarian” who wants limited government should embrace the means to his freedom: thriving mediating institutions that create the moral preconditions for economic markets and choice.

A “social issues” conservative with a zeal for righteousness should insist on a free market economy to supply the material needs for families, schools, and churches that inspire moral and spiritual life. In a nutshell, the notion of separating the social from the economic issues is a false choice. They stem from the same root.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusionism_(politics)

Some Social First Conservatives liken changing their priority to Fiscal first to save the country, to taking a seat in the back of the bus.

The biggest fear of most Tea Party members is, the Social first Conservatives will not change their priorities on a Federal level till after the bus crashes just so they can say “Hay!, look at me, I held my ground on social issues first all the way to the wall”.

You are totally in your right to be who you are and that’s ok with me.

It’s just a matter of priorities,

The Constitution is neither Right or Left, it is American.
You need neither be Right or Left to vote American.
When you vote on the Federal level based on politics, you are voting for a lobbyist to promote your own personal wants and force them on others through taxation and legislation.

sad day

victoria_29 Thursday, January 27th at 6:46PM EDT (link)

Mike Pence not running is a sad day for conservatives. Now I have sat here & read all this list of so-called conservatives & want to be candidates.

1. Mike lets give FREE college tuition to illegal immigrants Huckabee-he is RINO at best/
2. Good old Mitt Romneycare- says it all
3. Newt adulter Gingrich, many of us older people remember how he deserted dying wives (& yes that is plural) for affairs with younger women, climate change with his good buddy Nancy-to say the least
4. Sarah you betcha Palin-supported TARP, divisive, flamable to say the least, quitter (& please don’t go into the excuses we have heard them all)
5. Herman the fed doesn’t need auditing Cain, oh not to mention “nationalizing banks isn’t so bad” , very strong supporter of TARP
6. Mitch shut-up & sit down you social conservatives Daniel-social issues aren’t important
7. Tim Nice Guy Pawlenty – who I personally like but am realistic to know that he isn’t tough enough to hang
8. Gov Haley Barbour-yes he can play as rough & dirty as obama & Dems want to play, but as Haley himself said, he is too southern to win-even though he was an extremely successful Gov.
9. Gov Rick Perry-since Mike Pence is not running, probably the candidate with the best chance to beat obama because hard to argue with success & make no mistake being elected Gov of Tx 3 times is success & the libs just tried to take him down, like Haley Barbour he can get as nasty as they choice, however, he is not a perfect Conservative but then again he did NOT support TARP or other bailouts.
10. Sen Jim DeMint-I love him & think he would be awesome, except that I don’t trust the RINO side of the GOP. We all saw how they did some of the Conservative candidates in Nov 2010-they bascially sabotoged them & I am afraid that the GOP themselves would cut off their nose to spite their face.
11. Ron Paul-he comes across as a royal nutcase-I am not saying he is so please paul people don’t freak-that is how he comes across to most Americans.

You better get a flameproof suit on

However I am not as ignorant regarding Mr Cain as you might think having heard him speak and quite eloquently at the RS Gathering.
Here are three interesting things I learned from your link:

I did not remember that he has a masters from Purdue, earned while working as a mathematician with the Navy.
I did not know he was chairman of the Fed in Kansas City.
I did not know he is for the Fair Tax.

I am still concerned that he does not think the Fed needs auditing and that he might be for nationalizing banks. What this tells me is that I do need to do more research but at sources other than his own site.

I remain crushed that Mike Pence withdrew his name today because having learned so much about his impeccable conservative record, his positions (immigration!) and his integrity I think he could have created an atmosphere wherein the various factions of the party could have coalesced into a remarkable ticket especially with the addition of someone like Rubio. Although Jindal does have more experiece.

Well done. Find the facts, determine what you can and can not support in any candidate. That’s one of the greatest privileges we have in this country.

I have some questions about Cain as well. All I will say is consider the source when you do your research.

And we’ll compare notes somewhere along the line, okay?

I’m disappointed myself at the events of the day. Pence is the kind of person I would have been willing to support.

We’ll see how things go from here.

Pence knows he had zero chance at wining . Which is good, because some like Herman Cain know they have zero chance, and just want put their names in the national spotlight. I like Herman Cain 10 times more than Pence. But I still don’t think he has a chance. Herman Cain would not make it far in the primary race. He lost the 2004 U.S. Senate candidacy race. If he can not win in his home state, where people know him most, he can not win in a national race.

I don’t think Palin is unelectable based on what polls say.

I think she has a much higher hill to climb, because she was not prepared to be thrust into the spotlight in 2007, and was not sufficiently aligned with “maverick”‘s establishment policies, so had some trouble in interviews. Much easier to interview when you’re using your own playbook than when you have to remember someone elses’ positions…

This does not mean that she can’t succeed, or that she shouldn’t try .. but it is a fact – she has a harder climb ahead.

He is a smart man, and would make a good President, but the simple fact is that history was against him. The nation hasn’t elected a President directly from the House since James Garfield, and the GOP is in a place where they will want their candidate to be somebody with a job outside of D.C.

He is still young as far as GOP Presidential candidates tend to go. Though the Gen X-ers should be in a powerful position by 2016, there is no reason that he could not make a run as late as 2020.

In the meantime, Mike Pence will make an excellent Governor of Indiana.

And if you graciously admit that you don’t know everything, you have to trick people into believing you will appoint people to your administration who do know everything. Because you have to make people super confident that your administration knows everything about everything so that you and your administration can CONTROL EVERYTHING, which is what all of us conservatives want…….isn’t it? Pence for Governor: Palin for POTUS

exmil_uk Thursday, January 27th at 9:13PM EDT (link)

I am a UK citizen and this is only my second post on redstate. I love the United States and wish her well, but this is by definition an observation from outside the USA.

Mike Pence is a good man, and a solid conservative, IMHO he would make an excellent Governor of Indiana.

I think three important points of political stategy are being missed when Palin is being discussed.

Why does the left fear her?

1/ Demographics. POTUS is a unique office such that people feel they must “identify” with a Presidential candidate in an emotional gut feeling manner. This makes Demographics the core of any presidential run – Sarah Palin is the only potential Republican candidate that can take White working class votes away from Obama. This is in US Football terms is the ability to force a turnover, to take something your opponents had and use it against them.

2/ Fund raising power. If Sarah Palin runs, millions of ordinary Americans will rally to her cause, through the Internet and on the ground. The sheer volume of small individual donations made over the Internet will pour in like a vast storm. In a country the size of the USA only TV, “air power” has the firepower to move undecided voters in the Presidential contest and the effect of turning tight margin down ballot races from defeat to victory.

3/ “Joan of Arc” effect. Sarah touches something deep inside anyone of patriotic, constitutional belief on an emotional level. This ability is just the pure natural Sarah Palin, she has a kind of honest innocence that when she talks about flag and faith reduces people to a choked up state, sometimes even to wiping away the odd tear. This can change the turnout equation and threatens the Democrats in Mid-West States, especially the ones that voted for Hillery Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primaries.

The other Palin strengths are well known.

Polling Hypothetical questions like candidate support is dependent on the questions asked, and the latest TV coverage. Sarah Palin will have the financial resources to talk over the heads of the main stream media during a presidential campaign, and the sheer guts to HAMMER Obama into Jelly on his putrid record of mass-unemployment and economic stagnation.

Godspeed to Sarah Palin, Redstate and may he watch over all the defenders on the United States Constitution (Both in Uniform overseas and at Home), the greatest Charter of Human freedom in the history of our planet and the very source of American exeptionalism itself.

It bothers some people who would rather put fiscal issues first that social conservatives are as adamant as we are right now in trying to define some solid lines based on principle and to stick to them, but usadying’s diary proves why we see it as being so important.

The moral standards in our country have sunk so LOW that it is mind-boggling. And it is going to be a fight like no other to salvage what we can.

Do you think public policy...

LibertarianHawk (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 12:45PM EDT (link)

…could even effectively raise our moral standards if we wanted it to?

I’m skeptical about that. Suffice it to say, I don’t consider myself a social conservative. I’m pro-life. But, beyond that, I’m usually off the SoCon reservation to one degree or another.

But I certainly recognize what you’re describing. Our moral standards have indeed fallen through the floor. I just have my doubts as to how much public policy could affect that — leaving aside the question of whether or not it’s appropriate.

It could if school choice were effected.

redneck_hippie (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 2:00PM EDT (link)

That is why so many governors are pushing for it. I do not believe it is only because they want to improve the economic climate. In many areas, the only decent schools are religious parochial schools. Governors are too smart to say that choice of school may sometimes better moral standards, but it is as plain as day. Sure the unions want to maintain their gravy train. But the D politicians also do not like people being taught The Word.

If we can get education back on track with the priorities in the proper place, it could make a huge amount of difference.

Put some moral standards back into it, and this alter the course of human character development for students, which allows them the opportunity to be better prepared to take on responsibility as adult citizens of this country.

Also agree that every liberal in the country is going to be dead set against it.

We’ve got high students who know the subject of sex inside and out, but they can’t read past a third grade level. Really, what does this say about where the priorities have been in our school system?

LH, at this point, what I don't want

lineholder (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 2:21PM EDT (link)

is for taxpayer contributed public funds to be used to encourage the continuation of the moral decay.

I’m not in the least bit interested in trying to impose moral standards on other people, and even if I was, it wouldn’t work because for anyone to succeed in living up to a moral code the desire to do so has to come from inside the individual.

You know what an enabler is, right? Well, by not taking a stand against some of the programs that are contributing to the decreasing moral integrity of our nation we’re enabling that decay to continue.

This is something we can change.

Wrong on Demographics

Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 4:21AM EDT (link)

I’ll clearly support Palin but from a Demographic point of view you are incorrect.

Pretty much any Republican will take votes from working class whites vs Obama. This was proved in the 2010 elections.

This is actually where Palin trails everyone else as there are a lot of conservative / middle of the road whites that will sit out rather than vote Palin. This is based on a small sample size of people who I know who have said as much despite my efforts to point out why this is a bad idea.

Interesting question actually

georgeinla (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 8:54AM EDT (link)

I’d like to see some polling in and around Appalachia and the Upper Midwest specifically. I think our UK friend has correctly identified the white working class as the key to this election, as it has been to a number of others (“Reagan Democrats” immediately come to mind). Yes, it’s true that the Republicans won this demographic in 2010, and there’s good reason to think that they will do so again in 2012. But the Tea Party was THE story of the 2010 election, and Sarah Palin is the putative head of it. She had a great records in terms of her (infamously) targeted Congressional Districts, which I imagine were mostly populated by working class whites.

We’re also talking about Sarah Palin vs. Romney mostly, right? Would Mitt Romney really outperform Sarah Palin in Appalachia, the Upper Midwest, the exurbs? I find that pretty hard to believe, given that people vote based on their identification with the candidate more than anything. But a good poll would be helpful, though things can and will also change significantly between now and Nov. 2012.

Unless you know which planet the big O came from? and their’s a lot of people scratching their heads about him now. We need a balance of both groups ( R’s&T’s). Both conservative as it pertains to a Federal & State Government made up of a moral and religious people, and from both groups. 1) is Sarah Palin 2). Thaddeus McCotter. One as President, the fighter. 2.) Two as Vice President, the backup fighter. And this could work if you wanted to switch the positions.. Post your thoughts

The thing we need to remember is

Lloyd Davis (Diary) Thursday, January 27th at 10:52PM EDT (link)

we can all express our opinions on the better candidate but why fight to tear down potential candidates for our side before the fight has even begun. We are doing the left’s job for them. We can’t continue to fight among ourselves and expect to win.

We are so sure that our side will win in 2012, we are in danger of shooting ourselves in the foot. We talk of the lack of a deep bench and promptly pick apart newcomers simply because they are not our preferred candidate.

Most of this comes from the old-guard GOP establishment who resent losing control.

The Left are laughing at us.

Examples:

Palin.
She drives the left absolutely nuts. They have been trying to destroy her for years. Our sides response: Some agree with the left’s caricature and spend time trying to persuade everyone that it is correct. She is called a quitter ( and yes, we all know why she resigned). Attacking her will alienate her supporters and further divide the party. This helps the left and is encouraged by them.

(cue the laughter)

O’Donnell
The issue at this point is not could she have won. The point is too many on our side went out of their way trying to prove she couldn’t that they helped the left take the seat. Instead of helping shore her up and get the victory they helped throw the game. By being so upset their guy didn’t win, they made sure she couldn’t.

Who do you think was laughing?

That’s just 2 quick examples.

Debate is needed. We need to examine the candidates but keep an open mind. We are playing a bigger game here.

We don’t need the establishment picking a recycled candidate just because its their turn. We can’t trust the establishment.. they never learn, as evidenced by their trying to ignore the Tea Party, even after November. To them its business as usual.

Just any candidate won’t be good enough against Obama. We need to look at the good and the bad points of candidates but not with the goal of destroying them, but of picking the right one. We need the right candidates and not the default one because we helped the Left thin our field.

Victory will come when the Left is defeated and the Right has learned the right lessons. We are looking to take the GOP and our country back.

Totally agree

Pence's non-run is good news for me

Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 4:18AM EDT (link)

I really would like to see a candidate with governoral experience as our nominee as it is most easy to translate that into what it takes to be President.

Pence as Indiana’s governor would have a chance to run in 2016 if we somehow fail to defeat Obama or in 2020 if we do defeat Obama.

I suspect our choices will come down to Romney and Pawlenty (Most of you know I prefer Daniels first and not-Huckabee second) simply based on name recognition and ground game.

********
Formerly know as “Oz” in these parts

I can envision that.

LibertarianHawk (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 11:24AM EDT (link)

The choices coming down to Romney and Pawlenty, that is.

A big X factor right now is Palin, though. Nobody knows if she’ll run or not. I don’t even think she knows.

If I had to guess right now, I’d say she won’t. But, if she does, then somebody’s going to have to become the “anti-Palin” candidate. And, if it’s more than one, then that raises the chances that she’d win the nomination.

I like Daniels, too. In fact, I think more highly of him than I have any major politician since Reagan. But I’m just not sure he’s going to run. And, even if he does, then I think he’ll have an uphill battle.

If Daniels doesn’t run, then I think I’ll get behind Pawlenty. I like what Cato had to say about him recently.

No it doesn't.

LibertarianHawk (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 11:19AM EDT (link)

For one thing, Daniels and Pence are not all that close. I don’t think there’s any particular animus there. But neither have I ever seen evidence of any special camaraderie.

Pence is something of a political gate-crasher. He really didn’t come up through the party ranks at all. He was an outside policy guy with Indiana Policy Review and a talk-show host who decided to put his money where his mouth was and seek office.

Daniels is much more a creature of the party establishment — having been Lugar’s chief of staff, political director in the Reagan Administration, and OMB director in the GWB Administration.

I’d still say it’s about a 50/50 shot that Daniels will run for president. If he’s going to, he’s really not doing much in the way of laying groundwork.

He’s pretty singularly focused on the current legislative session — getting education reform (charter school expansion and our first voucher program) as well as doing away with our outdated township government.

I hope he runs. But I wouldn’t be shocked if he doesn’t.

Pence for Daniels & Lugar?

chihank Friday, January 28th at 11:29AM EDT (link)

Last week, Pence did meet with Daniels about the future. I guess Daniels convinced Pence to run for Governor. Pence’s likely Dem opponent will be the pro-life Joe Donnelly of the IN-02. It will be a treat for IN voters to choose between two pro-life candidates.

Also Sen. Lugar will have to face opposiion from disgruntled Tea Party activists in the primary. Will Daniels and Pence come to Lugar’s rescue?

Daniels seems to want to take a “Later than sooner” apporach to the Presidential race. I guess he wants to work with the GOP legislature to pass reforms so he can tout a record of achievements for 2012.

How about this scenario

pilgrim (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 11:33AM EDT (link)

Mike Pence takes the Governor seat in Indiana, Mitch Daniels takes the US Senate seat, and Lugar retires. Sounds good to me.

Activists Taking Action: Unified Patriots

Doubtful.

LibertarianHawk (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 11:41AM EDT (link)

I don’t think Mitch Daniels has any interest whatsoever in a legislative position. And I can’t say I blame him, that’s really not his calling.

In fact, if he doesn’t run for president (and I have my doubts that he will), I strongly suspect he’ll never hold another elected office of any kind — with the lone possible exception of taking a VP slot.

Lugar, alas, has already announced he’ll seek another term. And, more likely than not, he’ll get it. His politics and ideology aside, he really seems to have aged a lot in the last few years.

Well...

LibertarianHawk (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 11:37AM EDT (link)

…I know that Daniels would campaign hard for Lugar. That’s his political mentor — Lugar’s been like a father to him.

I don’t know about Pence, though. He doesn’t really owe Lugar anything (or Daniels, for that matter). That could be interesting to watch.

I’m a bit skeptical that the Tea Party will have the chops to topple Dick Lugar. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing it, so long as it wouldn’t open the door to a Dem taking the seat. But it’ll take their best shot — and the candidates that are being rumored now probably aren’t it.

Also, I know that the Dem mayors of Evansville and Hammond are both looking at running for governor. With Pence in the race, I have to imagine it would make Joe Donnelly think twice about abandoning his safe House seat.

I'd have been shocked had he run.

LibertarianHawk (Diary) Friday, January 28th at 11:13AM EDT (link)

He’s been planning appearances around the state and the GOP fundraising machine has already started whipping into gear. I can’t imagine he’d have done that and then reversed course to run for president.

I’m glad — because it means the GOP should be able to hold the governor’s mansion.

But, speaking as somebody who is intimately familiar with the Indiana Republican Party, let me just say that we’ve got a better option here than Mike Pence. That’s nothing against Mike. But this other guy’s a rare gem, IMO.

And I’ll leave it at that.
