Congress to Examine “Inappropriate” and “Devastating” Use of “Geronimo” Codename in bin Laden Mission

As if Congress had nothing more important to do, ABC News brings us word that Congress will hold hearings on the use of the code name Geronimo as a reference to Osama Bin Laden.

“The hearing was scheduled well before the Osama bin Laden operation became news, but the concerns over the linking of the name of Geronimo, one of the greatest Native American heroes, with the most hated enemies of the United States is an example of the kinds of issues we intended to address at Thursday’s hearing,” Loretta Tuell, the committee’s chief counsel, said in a statement.

“These inappropriate uses of Native American icons and cultures are prevalent throughout our society, and the impacts to Native and non-Native children are devastating,” Tuell said. “We intend to open the forum to talk about them.”

Some of you are wondering if we can send SEAL Team 6 to Congress. I would never wonder that. I just wonder how exactly Congress ever hopes to improve its dazzling popularity rating when it plays on the hypersensitive humorlessness of lefties race warriors.

Political Correctness has won, we are doomed!

    oh this chaps my arse.

when you jump out of an airplane is now a federal crime?

  • paramedichess

Your title should read “Democrat controlled Senate to Examine…” It needs to be clear to the American people who is wasting their tax dollars with such PC nonsense.

  • dessert

What’s the problem? They were both enemies of the United States.

When I first heard news of this they were portraying this as Osama himself was codenamed Geronimo and I found that to be offensive. On second look it was the mission itself that was codenamed Geronimo which is entirely different and carries a whole other meaning.

I do have to give credit though that they did not name this one after a stripper named Odyssey Dawn.

Thunder Horse is the large BP deepwater oil field I’ve alluded to a few times in these pages.

It was originally called “Crazy Horse”, until some Native Americans, presumably the Lakota tribe, protested.

Oil prospects are often given code names, with a general theme for prospects in a given basin with similar characteristics. The theme for this one was “rock bands” — Crazy Horse was actually named for Neil Young’s band.

There’s another field known as Blind Faith. Don’t know if that name offends the disabled.

  • acat

I suspect the evolution of “blind faith” from a christian principle (walk by faith, not by sight) to a rock band to an oil field would not offend the visually challenged…

My test lab is currently on a New Wave bands theme….Cars, Police, Devo, etc…

I’m so sick of all the PC.

“Warrior” (Indian warrior) was the mascot of my HS. I grew up watching cowboy & indian westerns. I never once thought that indians were inferior people.

The only reason for any negative complex they might have today, is that they allowed themselves to become a protected species, which ultimately undermines self determination.

  • veritaseequitas

The Liberals can’t wet their pants over the handling of the OBL snuff operation so they are going to cry about this? Another reason we have to get them out of office in 2012. What is “devastating” Loretta is that the Poseur-in-Cheif had absolutely no clue that Geronimo was going down until they came and pried the golf club out of his hands and sat him down in the Situation Room to watch. He looked exactly like the dullard that he is.

    Blackhawk.

    Chinook.

Apache. Heck, you can even get that one in a Long Bow edition.

good administrator, server names that looked like random noise… He could keep it all straight, I just gave ‘em all nicknames.

I have enough American Indian blood in me to FORMALLY ABSOLVE all of you of racism.

All white, black, and asian Americans are formally absolved of any charge of racism and political incorrectness, you may use the name Geronimo to your hearts desire.

You may also use Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Tecumseh, Sequoyah, Quanah Parker, and Squanto.

  • davidleigh

was in fact the code name for OBL. Unless you guys read something somewhere more current, this was the codename assigned to the murderer-freak. I have a solution: don’t elect women to Congress, period, not at all. And, take the pansy-democrats, particularly from the northeast and northwest, with them. That will help a great deal. No offense to patriots in these two regions of the country. But democrats from these two regions tend to be unenthusiastic about anything American.

  • Finrod

Though I imagine few people here know who Doug Comer is.

Comer when he started his XINU lab wanted to name the machines after well-known people in CS, e.g. Knuth, Dijkstra, etc. Then he would be able to say things like “Knuth is down” or “Dijkstra isn’t talking to Knuth”. Unfortunately Purdue’s legal team told him that naming a machine after a living person like that might imply their approval which could get the university in trouble, so it didn’t happen.

  • Finrod

Though once I started owning pinball machines, I had to stop using the names of the machines I owned as computer names, to avoid serious confusion, so I retired bk2k and hauntedhouse as server names.

  • nancylee

The Professionally Offended class can always be depended on. I’m just annoyed that all these politicians haven’t learned to ignore it after all this time.

  • grandma

You may tell Polish and/or Italian jokes. Ancestrally, I am 50% Polish and 50% Italian. But I am 100% American.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

I’m sure you can imagine what phrases that led to.

Also, never give computers negative names. We once named a computer “core” to save core files from other computers on it. Stupid computer core-dumped regularly.

  • Old_Crow

Might be offensive to those cute little aquatic mammals…

  • chbroussard

Half of these people need to get over it, and the other half need to get a life. There sure are a lot of people with a chip on their shoulder as big as Dallas, and it is quite unflattering. Pretty hard to take these so-called leaders seriously.

  • earlgrey

want that to be a part of our culture. I do not have any native american blood in my family although I wish I did so that I could tan.

I just find the inative american history of our country interesting and important. For those that are not happy with the term being used here, all I can say is that you simply do not have enough to do.

  • Ausonius

I fear too many of them might think this just a fine and dandy idea.

But I could be wrong: ultimately, a Conservative Republican in Hawaii needs to make the case that Akaka is bad for Hawaii, and bad for America, and that this is hearing is a small symbol of the stupidity and the wastefulness of the FedGov, and of Leftism in general.

    Who will accept the challenge?

  • blooch

It’s like a housewife in a ’50′s movie who has a workaholic husband:

“Honey, great news! I got a raise today!”

That’s just marvelous….look at these awful drapes. You just don’t care what this house looks like, do you??”

“Well, sure I do sweetie! Just buy some new ones…anything you like!”

“Oh boo hoo hoo! Men are so thick-headed!”

    “Jeez…what’s eating you?”

  • Finrod

At one company I worked for, one of the eight top-level directories in the source code repository was foolishly named ‘core’– which led to much wailing and gnashing of teeth when they accidentally deleted some files in there and asked me to get them off backup, only to discover that not only did the backup software not back up files named core, it didn’t back up directories named core either. Oops.

Negative names aren’t always bad, though; I knew a grad student that named his two computers ‘slow’ and ‘slower’.

  • renny

which, most unfortunately, supports Coutler’s decaration that women should never have been given the vote.

But I wish the diary had said right off it was some Dem. nitwit–and why would she do this?–was the source of this “investigation.” It’s HER team that got OBL and will try to make hay on it for 18 months. Hasn’t she gotten the message?

But I would warn the o minions that Bush I had a 92% approval after the Gulf War and still lost the election in 1992.

not Senate, as in Democrat controlled. Such things matter in the world of the Pea Brains. It does show the level of gravity of the party of the working man. Their timing and taste is exquisite.

As soon as I read the first article that mentioned the code name, I was expecting this investigation.

  • romeg

    Such as ‘Trailblazer’ or ‘Rawhide’

  • runner12

it was a joke or something. Unfortunately it is not. No wonder these people have a poor favorability rating.

When I read stuff like this, it reminds me of the satires and scathing criticism Charles Dickens wrote about the British bureaucracies back in the day.

Boy would he have had a heyday with our politicians!

Even Monty Python would stop short of scripting this; as being beyond the bounds of credibility. :(

PC has gone crazy, it will destroy us all. The thought police are coming people.

  • rickbull

is that Osama bin Laden would have to stand on his mother’s shoulders to kiss Geronimo’s butt.

  • rightwingmom52

    I’d rather have 1 Michelle Bachmann’s or Marsha Blackburn than 10 Boehner’s.

  • jraiffie

Like Congress has nothing better to do than to examine the political correctness of the use of Geronimo? PC kills and so does Seal Team Six, Delta Force, ect. Attaching the name of such a prideful and successful mission should be an honor to native americans. Give me a frickn break. If soldiers have what it takes to serve black ops, they can call their missions whatever the hell they want as far as I’m concerned.

Political correctness is going to be the end of our way of life.

  • zanografix

Names who were the Senators who brought this silliness up. How much money are they going to waste on this deversion? Geronimo hid in Mexico until US army and cavalry routed him out. Any honors due to OBL are pure PC crap.

  • barrowmrb

DOES CONGRESS HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO.

    TAXES ARE TOO HIGH.
    THERE IS HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT
THE DEFICIT IS GROWING MORE AND MORE
THERE ARE STILL TERRIORISTS IN THE USA.
    GAS PRICES ARE STRANGLING AMERICA
AND THE DEBT CEILING IS CLOSING FAST.

DOES CONGRESS HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN THIS.

  • davesinsanantonio

whether they are doing something useful, useless, or even dangerous to the country.
In fact, by spending their time doing something this useless it might just keep them from doing something dangerous. But probably not, since “fundamentally transforming the United States of America” seems to be their main goal.
(Getting re-elected is the other one.)

  • kathleenst

Rather than take it as an insult, accept it as an honor.

Perhaps the name was chosen to insure success and luck.

I am highly confident the name was not chosen to insult anyone.

This political correctness is a bunch of crap and we have a crappy senate who is taking time and OUR money to chat about it. Most likely make up an apology bill or proclamation. Another public stupid attack!

The Paddy Wagon was named after all the drunk Irishmen who came to America and had to be picked up by the wagon to spend a night in the jail.

    It wasn’t renamed.

    Get over it!

  • kathleenst

Rome burns, senate moves porch furniture.
    Idiots in charge.
Move ‘em out next election cycle.
Put in some people who want to work on real issues.

The deficit, the economy, rising gas prices, two wars without ends in sight, no workable budget for 2011 or 2012, no immigration policy that defends our borders, challenges to the second and tenth amendments, etc. etc.etc. What is of the greatest concern to congress? The code name for taking out a terrorist and whether the NCAA should have a playoff system. Maybe we should just re-elect these guys by acclimation since they are facing the tough problems in such a courageous manner. This has got to be the most inept disgusting congress in my 61 years. Totally worthless. Please don’t forget the job they’re doing when it’s time to vote in 2012. No wonder their approval rating is below 15%! They should be ashamed. They aren’t. Just waiting for the next lobbyist checks to come in. Two words…TERM LIMITS!

  • aldutt9mm

please give this political correctness crap a rest and fix the mess this country is in…IMPEACH OBUMMER NOW…

  • geah

native American I find this in really bad taste, how in heavens name can he be Americas enemy when he was here first, as an native person I am proud of him, if I were a Black person I would be proud of one of their own.

Hey if it had to have a name,, you fill in the blanks The Native is already well known for ball teams, enough is enough already

  • cpa2222

And now they’ll get them scorned again all over the country. They have more government intervention programs than the snail darters. As Tevye once bemoaned in “Fiddler…”, “can’t you choose some other people for a while?”

  • MF
  • gizmo

You’ve GOTTA be KIDDING!!! These guys were running around butchering, raping & enslaving other tribes… Then we “white men” come along & get them to “sorta” ban together against a common enemy… THEN we “white men” actually HONOR several of these “natives” by showing their bravery, tenaciousness, loyalty , etc. by enshrining their NAMES!!! AND YOU GRIPE AND WHINE!!!
This is totally rediculous! Do we have sports names of Germans? English? NO! we honor the “Red Man” through these uses, even though MOST of them throughout modern history have been drunks, lazy bums living on handouts…

  • grandma

I can fit in this category also. :-)

We are Apache and Cherokee…..and I can trace my family back to Pocahontas. I don’t find any problem with the usage at all. It is time to just get over it folks, or run the risk of looking like those who slap the race card all the time. Move on for Pete’s sake and leave the whining to the left.

This is nothing more continual diversion from the issues that will defeat Obama.

Is there any conservative Republican who will stand up and say we are paying $4 per gallon, 475,000 first time claims for unemployment, $14 trillion in debt?

    FOCUS PEOPLE!!

This is a continual slight of hand by this administration to keep people’s eyes off the REAL problems.

It is called accountability, and if this congress isn’t going to address, then throw them out until someone gets it.

  • powertothepeople

is as absurd if not more absurd than the thin skin PC calls about the word Geromino.

  • powertothepeople

and I must ask, are you calling for term limits because you feel people are too stupid to vote for who they want to be in power or because you do not think people should have the right to vote for the same person after a set amount of time?
