Rick Perry is not running for the Presidency.
There is a lot of buzz about what Perry has recently said, but he is not running. His key people are helping Newt. Behind the scenes, many have been pestering him, but he has been swatting them away.
Rick Perry is not running for President of the United States. The buzz is related to the continuing disappointment of many conservatives about the current crop of candidates and the wishful thinking of many.
But he’s not running.
Now . . . I do think Rick Perry could be persuaded to run. In the next couple of weeks Mitch Daniels will announce he is running for President. I know, he is denying he has made up his mind. On Monday night I put on twitter that my sources are telling me a decision has been made. The next day, Daniels denied that.
But three people who know Daniels well are telling me his mind is made up and his wife is at peace with the decision. They could be reading tea leaves, but they tell me their certainty goes beyond that.
Here’s the thing, though. Perry is not running, but if Daniels does get in as seems certain and conservative angst runs high, I also believe that Perry could be drafted.
Conservatives would have to mount a massive, rapid, and high volume effort to get him in. I think such an outpouring of support and requests would draw Perry in. But, to do so, it’d have to be after Daniels and with continued displeasure with the field by conservatives.
One of the sticking points has always been whether the country was ready for another guy from Texas so soon after Bush. With Texas’s economy flourishing and the national economy still imploding, I think the country could get ready for another guy from Texas really quick.
Daniels is running. How conservatives react once Daniels makes it official could have an impact on Perry if conservatives target him for a draft effort.

Why would Rick

Governor Rick Perry
leeanne Thursday, May 19th at 8:55AM EDT (link)I was on my knees yesterday asking the Lord to please get Gov. Perry in this race. Hearing that he might run has given me my first feeling of hope. The only other person I really want for my President is Sarah Palin; seeing her last night on Hannity just increased my opinion that she would be great. But I know that even though we “say” we know the national media lies, many have believed the lies about her, and I really think people are still prejudiced toward having a woman president. Our voters are still full of many evangelicals whose Biblical beliefs deny a woman leader (I praise the Lord for them anyway). So my hope is that Gov. Perry will run.

jaykali (Diary) Wednesday, May 18th at 7:36PM EDT (link)McCain is seen as a Rino in these circles and the Democrats made him out to be “just like” Bush, the media will say any Republican has the same ideas that ‘got us in this mess’ – I think at this point that trick doesn’t work any more. People just think, ‘wow and we elected you to fix it and it’s worse’.
So ya Jeb Bush would make the media crazy but I think if anything people have a more positive view already of the Bush legacy then they did a couple years ago. And Jeb doesn’t really act like a ‘W’ clone. Anywho he’s not going to run so it’s a moot point.

Menlo (Diary) Wednesday, May 18th at 5:37PM EDT (link)I don’t know how you measure that, but the state government has not been much more fiscally responsible than that of California. By that measure, you should look to North Dakota. I don’t see being a tax haven as an enviable status.
Second, the governor should not be credited or blamed for the action or inaction of the legislature. They are responsible for the state’s policy issues. This is especially true in Texas where the governor has less power and less influence both in law and in practice.
A lot of people in Texas don’t like Rick Perry (or else are very disingenuous). They just dislike the alternatives even more. On a national level, I doubt he’d get more than a third of the vote. Then again, I don’t think anyone could beat Obama in 2012.

Rick Perry Is A Gladiator
victrola Wednesday, May 18th at 5:07PM EDT (link)Rick Perry is the type of Republican that would beat Obama to a bloody pulp, he has a killer instinct similar to Giuliani. I will say though the Texas connection will hurt him (although it’s not fair) A Texas Republican is sort of like a San Francisco Democrat, it’s a hard mold to break.
The whole drama of whether Mitch Daniels is running or not seems silly, imo. I’m really not waiting on the edge of my seat for Mitch to come in on a white horse and save us, he doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that Obama will be a one-term President. It would be one thing if this “teasing” were coming from someone like Chris Christie.

Certainly Daniels and Pawlenty would be competing for many of the same voters
Adjoran (Diary) Thursday, May 19th at 2:13AM EDT (link)Daniels would have more of an “in” with the establishment types, while Pawlenty is more attractive to evangelicals and church-goers generally, but for the most part they would be fighting for the big middle group of Republican primary voters who are somewhat to the right of Romney but somewhat left of Bachmann.
I don’t think Perry is ready for a Presidential run from a tactical and logistical point of view. His national organization would need to be much more developed and active. It is early in the 2012 primary season, but very late in the game before the game of getting donors and fund-raisers lined up, not to mention regional and local cadres of volunteers ready to get to work when the flag drops.

Ignoring that our fiscal problems are caused largely by our social ills, which result in massive welfare rolls.

I had hoped to talk to AZaeroProf about this the other day, but it hardly matters, since my state’s primary is so late in the year (and rightly so given how it works here) – August – as to be irrelevant. Right now I’m focused on beating up Tim Geithner and the statist big spenders on my word processor, in a would-be reply to Senator DeMint if I can tone it down, but I thought I’d weigh in briefly here on 2012, in case anyone cares.

I know a fair number of TX Repubs who are wishy-washy about Perry. But I think there is a big difference between governing a state (or a city for that matter), and governing the nation. I would generally trust Perry in office, and I think he could be a much stronger candidate against Obama. He definitely is also a “central casting candidate”, and I suspect he would chew Obama up and spit him out in a debate, and look good doing it.
That said, as a bald guy myself, I have no problem with a candidate that looks like Daniels!

For those who don’t know, the Gardisil controversy was over Gov. The crux of the issue is explained by this blurb from the site to which Rhymes links:
Rhymes, I agree with the author of this quote, but surely you are aware that the phrase “playing doctor” does not conjure, for most people, the mental image of a forced vaccine.

If Perry was held in that high esteem, he wouldn’t have a setting Senator from his own party consider challenging him. The truth is most Republicans are not in love with the Perry era. Whether its the Trans-Texas Corridor, forced HPV Vaccinations, among other things, he is someone that gets national respect solely from the position he holds, and not for the man himself. He drastically underperformed the rest of the state ticket, and due to his lackluster general election campaign, he hurt the downballot races in Dallas County and others. In a banner election year with a strong GOP tailwind, he underperformed McCain’s performance here in ’08.
