Chris Christie’s Time to Run

Let me put an editorial note here that this is not in any way, shape, or form an endorsement of Chris Christie. It is, rather, my assessment of his chances for the Presidency should he choose to pass on 2012.

The governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, claims he has no intention of running for president in 2012. I believe that 2012 is the only time Chris Christie will be a highly viable candidate. Should Chris Christie not run in this presidential cycle, I believe this will be the last we will hear of Chris Christie for President.
I think Chris Christie is going to all have a very difficult time winning reelection in New Jersey in 2013. By then, New Jersey’s debt and economic problems will still be large, even if Chris Christie is successful in this term. Likewise, we can expect a more concerted and unified effort among Democrats and allies like unions than we saw even in 2009. Given New Jersey’s nature as a Democrat leaning state, I think Christie will have a hard time getting reelected. Were he to lose, it would be three years before the next presidential election making it even harder for Chris Christie to be seen as a viable presidential candidate.

But let’s assume that Chris Christie does win reelection. The buzz surrounding Chris Christie right now largely exists in the vacuum of another high-profile governor who could run for office. Should Sarah Palin or Rick Perry enter the race, the Christie buzz would be significantly tapped down.

Remember as well that the viability of a Chris Christie candidacy in 2016 is premised on the fact that the Republicans do not win the White House in 2012. I actually think Republicans will win in 2012, and should they, Chris Christie will not be a viable candidate against an incumbent Republican president in 2016.

To continue the argument about Chris Christie’s future viability, we must assume that a Republican does not win in 2012 and Barack Obama is reelected. Assuming that, we must first take out the major Chris Christie buzz of this year which is largely premised on the perceived lack of a high-profile, stellar candidate. Push Chris Christie into the 2016 cycle and he is confronted with a field of candidates including potentially governors from New Mexico, Nevada, Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas, and, should their popularity recover, Florida and Ohio.

In that list of potential candidates for 2016, Chris Christie’s record in New Jersey may not stack up as well. Likewise, we should not dismiss the fact that much of Chris Christie’s popularity comes from YouTube videos done rather well by his staff. Very few have done a detailed examination of Chris Christie’s record and how it matches up to his rhetoric. Should he be found wanting on the rhetoric to record ratio, it would be another dent in his armor.

Notwithstanding that, looking at his potential rivals in 2016, Christie is by no means a sure win and, will in fact, be not nearly as fresh a face on the scene as many of the other governors on the list. Additionally, should the Democrats really perceive Chris Christie to be a threat, they can spend the next several years working to undermine his credibility in New Jersey to negatively affect with Republican primary voters nationwide.

I have always thought the greatest incentive for Chris Christie to run for president is the lack of a high-profile, stellar Republican candidate in 2012. Had we a rock star this time, the Christie buzz would largely dissipate because he’s not even a one term governor. If the Republicans win in 2012, his viability in 2016 goes away entirely and if the Republicans lose in 2012, he still must winning reelection in New Jersey and then enter into a potentially crowded Republican field in 2016 with much fresher faces who will arguably have much better records as governors simply because they were not governor of a state like New Jersey.

Therefore, should Chris Christie wish to run for president ever, I believe he better reconsider 2012 rather quickly.

and I think you characterizations are unfair to say the least.

He’s certainly not a “perfect” conservative (no one is) but looking at the whole picture, he’s a very valuable ally to have in the conservative movement.

If only EVERY Republican Governor were as effective as Christie, we’d be in a lot better shape.

Christie's may be great for NJ but not for the U.S.

America is a center right country and need a candidate that won’t tell 9/11 victims’ families that they are playing “political football” when they opposed the ground zero mosque.

Nor do we need someone who appointed a radical Muslim as a state judge.

We must find someone better than that.

at this point, if he is a fiscal conservative

then he would be better than most of the ones running, and that is just counting the republicans!

he is not a conservative. He would bring nothing to the conservative agenda as President.

somethng happened as I was posting the above.

the end of that message should have had a Yeah Right at the end of it. the first sentence should have ended with a question mark after the word conservative and a coma after the word BUT. Anyway the point I was trying to sarcastically make is that any Conservative that runs is going to be under HEAVY attack from the left and Yes they will make things up.

If I can refute this:

-He supports the same, reasonable gun control laws which are supported throughout the country in various forms.
-The GZM mosque was blown out of proportion by Gingrich
-He has never been supportive of amnesty. Ever.
-He is not pro-abortion, and is one of the strongest defenders of life in the country. Show me your sources.
-He has repeatedly stated that he finds Obamacare repugnant and is hoping for the anti-Obamacare lawsuit to succeed
-Where has it ever been written that he is pro-cap+trade? This is the guy who pulled NJ out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, right? Anyway, this is the cap and trade that was supported by almost all conservative politicians until a couple of years ago.

It seems plain to me that you have run out of genuine criticisms of Christie, and have resorted to making stuff up in order to incite an uprising against him by grassroots conservatives. You are trying to prevent one of the foremost conservatives of a generation from running for President. We’re talking about a man with intellectual ability and practical experience, a commoner’s touch and a politician’s art. A man who has sliced and diced government in NJ to unrecognizable levels. Chris Christie is our best bet for President, and your list of unsubstantiated attacks will do nothing to change that.

Oh, and looking at your commenting history, you don’t have much better to say.

This is his ONLY chance, no matter how 2012 shakes out, Christie will be largely forgotten if he passes on a run, with a MUCH stronger field of GOP candidates.

It’s obvious Obama is REALLY scared of Christie, the base would rally behind him (despite his few indiscretions), he would have NO problem raising money, he peels off a lot of Catholic Italian votes that have traditionally gone to Democrats, and if he can flip New Jersey red, there’s ZERO chance Obama gets reelected, we could lose Ohio, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Iowas and Minnesota and STILL win the White House.

I hope he runs, but I’m not optimistic. He will kick himself for the rest of his life, to know you very likely could be President but passed it up.

Amen!

Being wrong twice, I am putting my eggs in the Rick Perry basket

jaykali (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 1:03PM EDT (link)

I thought Huckabee would run but he didn’t and I thought Mitch Daniels would run and he didn’t, maybe 3rd time is the charm. Rick Perry makes me more excited than any of the other choices. I am a native Texan so I do have that bias. But Rick has shown he will take on the president and is a solid conservative with a great record. I think he wins on Texas performance vs the president’s easily. And it would set up a national dialogue as to the role of government. We can have california-style govt that leads to jobs going elsewhere (state level = Texas, natl level = overseas) or we can have fiscally conservative govt.

I love Christy but I dont think he’ll run. He also holds some more moderate positions that wont make southerners very happy. He would get a lot of moderates and I think his style would win over the base even if some of his moderate positions makes traditional southern conservatives uneasy.

Christy is a new governor and so I think the timing just isnt right for him. For Perry the timing is pretty great with the legislative session closing soon and he isn’t going to be running for re-election. I really hope he runs.

I don't know...

I don’t know much about Rick Perry, not being from Texas (well, aside from having been born in San Antonio, but like a true Army brat, I moved a month later…)

He seems…fine…to me. There is literally no one that I am “over the moon” for, and frankly, I’m okay with that. Given the train wreck that is Barack Obama, I’m fine with “fine.” “Competent but boring” is okay by me.

I’m afraid, though, that if we nominate Rick Perry, the narrative from the Dems will be “Look what happened the last time we had a TX governor in the White House.” Might be best to try to avoid that, if possible.

That's my only fear as well with Perry

victrola Friday, May 27th at 1:32PM EDT (link)

I still think he could beat Obama, Perry is definitely a bare-knuckle brawler when it comes to politics, he’s a great speaker, connects with the Tea Party base, and looks like the Marlboro Man, but being a Governor of Texas is going to be an albatross for him because of 8 years of Bush constantly playing up his connection with Texas.

It certainly shouldn’t be that way, Texas is a model for other states and leads the country with job creation, but culturally, many people hate what Texas stands for (mainly the MSM), I think the closest similarity would be a Democrat from San Francisco, it conjures up the worst stereotypes for the average American.

Not a Texan, but Perry seems different enough from Bush ...

acat (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 1:47PM EDT (link)

I’ve no doubt Perry will come out swinging where Bush 2.0 came out almost .. concilliatory in some ways…. that Perry can differentiate himself.

I may be misremembering, but .,. does Perry get along well with Bush? I seem to recall that the two are not tight… that could also be played to Perry’s advantage( if done respectfully) .. “Yeah, Bush is a great guy, I just disagreed with him on several issues.” …

Rick Perry says Bush was guilty of 'big government' overspending

izoneguy (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 2:06PM EDT (link)

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-news/dallas/headlines/20101108-Rick-Perry-says-Bush-was-guilty-2337.ece

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, launching a book that argues for downsizing the federal government, took aim Monday at George W. Bush for taking a “big government” approach to education and the social safety net.

The comments drew a tough rebuke from the Bush camp, exposing a rift between the former president and his successor in Austin, who casts himself as a more consistent conservative.

One longtime Bush aide, Tony Fratto, derided Perry as a “go-along politician” who parrots criticism without checking the facts.

Perry, speaking with reporters over breakfast in Washington, cited two of Bush’s signature presidential achievements – the Medicare drug benefit for seniors and the No Child Left Behind education law – as classic examples of burdensome, unaffordable policy.

“Those are both big government – but more importantly, they were Washington-centric,” Perry said. “One size does not fit all, unless you’re talking tube socks.”

Perry’s book, Fed Up! Our Fight to Save America From Washington, argues that Washington spends too much and has grabbed too much power at the expense of states. In it, Perry rejects Bush’s idea of “compassionate conservatism” and criticizes the bailouts he initiated two years ago to stanch the economic crisis.

While Bush gets high marks for “keeping us free and keeping us safe,” and history will judge him kindly, Perry said Monday, “it won’t be based on fiscal issues.”

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

Bush and Perry are nothing alike, but the die has been cast

victrola Friday, May 27th at 4:07PM EDT (link)

It’s just such an easy and lazy connection to make, Democrats will play it up big time. Just like McCain and Bush were polar opposites and political enemies, it didn’t matter, Obama successfully ran against Bush’s 3rd term. This time, the connection will be even easier to make if Bush’s successor in Texas has the nomination. It’s not fair, but that’s usually how these things play out.

A bombastic, Texas Governor might have some issues in states like Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc, especially when the comparisons are made to Bush. If Perry was Governor of say Nevada, I think the link would be MUCH harder to make.

I still like Perry, and would probably vote for him in the primary over anyone else that’s currently running, but I don’t think he’s quite the slam dunk that some might think. I see a Chris Christie doing MUCH better in a general election.

Here is how Perry handles that

izoneguy (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 4:33PM EDT (link)

Perry has been on all manor of network TV shows and radio talk shows.

One of Perry’s thrusts needs to be what Obama is doing to Texas or in the case of our wildfires – what Obama did not do.

Perry can show a vivid contrast between Texas and how vibrant it is IN SPITE of Obama trying to de-rail us. Now imagine a Rick Perry in the White House to free the American people from Obama’s tyranny.

Of course the MSM will come after Perry and try to say he is Bush II.
I don’t see Obama making anything better before Nov. 2012.
In fact it will be much worse. Obama will beat himself.

All Perry has to do is to let the media make the accusation...

acat (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 4:38PM EDT (link)

and then point out – politely – that he thinks Bush was for big government in an interview… (hint- done already)

and to drive it home, play Bush on SNL .. falling out of character halfway through to say “Y’know, I never did like some of the policies I inherited from Bush”….

Since the Obama camp have primed their followers to believe the “Bush==Evil” meme for so long, there’s a good chance of confusing the {hades} out of ‘em…

It was Chrissie Matthews who compared O to the American cowboy like those in the movies – Gary Cooper, Matt Dillon – that the cowboy is a man of few words. Agreeing with jaykali: it is *Rick Perry's* Time to Run ...

Martin Knight (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 9:49PM EDT (link)

I’ve already written about this …

If Perry decides to throw his hat into the ring, I think he would immediately become the frontrunner. And deservedly so.

First of all, Perry has the executive experience and the record to prove it – Governor for 10 years of the nation’s second largest state with the best record on job growth and development in the nation. Another cool fact is that the Democrats would have a hard time throwing the credit to the last Democrat Governor – especially since his predecessor was not only not a Democrat, but actually George W. Bush.

And even if “critics” point out that the Lt. Governor is more powerful in TX (which is arguable), he can point to the fact that he was Lt. Governor for a while – so he’s got that covered too. Going further, he’s got military experience – a 5 year veteran of the USAF and he’s got significantly more communications skills than W.

Which brings us to the main chink in his armor – TX and the aforementioned George W. Bush. Will the American people be ready to give the Presidency to another Texan so soon after the last Texan left with approval ratings in the toilet? Again, I think his record in TX can take care of that … and again, he can very firmly and respectfully say; “My name is James Richard Perry, not George Walker Bush.”

Add all that to the fact that it’s no secret that the Bush clan openly despises him (witness the endorsements of Kay Bailey Hutchison last year by so many Bushes and Bushies) and he can shake off the attachment quite easily.

And last, but not least, and note that this is extremely important to “moderate” (especially moderate female) voters, he “looks” Presidential.

To complete the ticket; if he can find a socially and fiscally conservative (important) African American or Hispanic running mate – ideally a veteran who’s held flag rank with no skeletons in his (or her) closet, I think it’ll be a ticket that’ll keep the Left up at night. Does anyone know if General Kip Ward a Republican?

Look, let’s not repeat 2008 all over again. You certainly can support your guy (I’d be a Cain man myself if he’d held any public office – last time he ran he lost the primary to Johnny Isakson – or served as a General in Iraq) but that doesn’t mean every other guy is to the Left of Stalin.

Remember; one of them is going to be our nominee and we’re going to need to unite behind him (or her). Creating bad blood makes it more likely Obama gets four more years.

Oh, but I’m sure should he choose to, Erick, you’ll be right here with about 137 bombastic threads about how he’s actually a squishy, traitorous RINO who’s just generally a really, really bad man.

In all seriousness though, if he wants to go for it, he should lose some weight. Not one of those drastic transformations where we can see a suddenly gaunt face, but a routine where he focuses on adding muscle and gets burly, not just rotund. Would burnish his “tough guy” image.

Here's a somewhat different take

gawken (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 1:20PM EDT (link)

I accept Cristie at his word..that’s he’s NOT running for the WH. However, if the GOP field fails to excite the base by the fall, then look for a substantial effort to draft him. THAT, he might well accept. There’s is NO need for him to get in now.

Cristie’s popularity in deep Blue NJ is due in part to the fact that he’s not even worried about getting re-elected. He’s sticking to his positions, doing what NJ needs, and he believes that enough voters will aprreciate that next time.

Just wondering….has anyone heard.seen from Corzine?

My hunch - on Christie

izoneguy (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 2:10PM EDT (link)

If Sarah gets in and Perry does not then Christie will get in.

If Perry gets in then Christie does not.

If Sarah & Rick both jump in then Christie does not.

Christie has his eyes on Texas -

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

No way would BOTH Palin and Perry jump in

heartlander (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 7:32PM EDT (link)

They’re good friends, I believe, and Perry was one of her close companions/advisers back during the ’08 campaign.

It’ll be one or the other of them, but not both. Hmmm… unless one chooses the other as a running mate?
Nah, can’t see either of those two taking the number two spot.

Conventional Wisdom also said Barbour got out because Daniels was getting in ...

so I’m pretty sure Conventional Wisdom has been knocking back a few too many after work…

Seriously, the narrative has said that Palin wants Perry to run rather than doing it herself… that he’s one of very few conservatives she trusts – but I’m not clear on who wrote that narrative, nor do I have a cite for it.

It does let me say things like “Perry/Bachmann” or “Perry/Cain”, though …

Guess it serves me right for getting all bent out of shape at my hairdresser, who doesn’t like Sarah Palin and could not give me one single concrete reason why. I was so frustrated with her — and now I see that I’m in exactly the same position vis-a-vis Rick Perry. I just don’t trust the guy.

Although, if pressed, I can give one specific thing he did that I absolutely LOATHED: his executive order that ordered all parents of 12-year-old girls to get them vaccinated against a virus that can only be transmitted through sexual activity.

Drug company says it will stop lobbying states to require HPV vaccines for girls

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4568574.html

Rep. Jessica Farrar, D-Houston, who has filed a bill to make the HPV shots a requirement, said that people opposed to requiring any vaccines for school admission and social conservatives “have hijacked the issues” surrounding Gardasil, which protects against four strains of HPV that can cause 70 percent of cervical cancers.

Perry was doing the old getalong routine with Democrats. I think he learned a lesson. Perry will be 1000 times better than Obama.

Timing

drivlikejehu Friday, May 27th at 2:55PM EDT (link)

While 2012 is definitely Christie’s best bet of reaching the White House, there are other factors to consider. He may not even want to be President, for one thing. He’s only 48 years old, so if he wins re-election in NJ he would be an option in 2016 and 2020 (depending on the circumstances of course). Winning re-election won’t be easy but at least that’s only one contest, whereas running for President involves two very difficult campaigns.

I think we may be entering a period of time when Presidents will have a much harder time being re-elected. I wouldn’t be surprised if the GOP won 2012, the Democrats in 2016, and the GOP again in 2020. If Christie is that great of a politician then an opportunity could well present itself in the future.

heartlander (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 7:36PM EDT (link)

While I carry no brief for Chris Christie, why the heck do people keep floating this idea that he’s pro-choice? I may not agree with much else about this guy, but, dammit, the man is pro-life. He even spoke at a big event on the Roe v. Wade anniversary. He sure didn’t have to do that, not in a state like NJ. Pretty gutsy, if you ask me.

what he has actually done in NJ. I like that he is unafraid to take on the media, but some of his positions lean towards big government involvement which is the complete antithesis of all things conservative.

He does have some fiscal conservative credentials, but I need details on what he has done not just what he is saying he will do.

Agreed.

NJ Is A Sinking Ship

dianecee Friday, May 27th at 9:18PM EDT (link)

I live in NJ, so let me explain what is going on here. The progressive party grew strength during Corzine’s administration. The raping of our paychecks grew ten-fold. In walked Christie’s alpha maleness and the under educated politicians calling themselves democrats had a royal hissy fit. Our governor is placating them while we tax payers experience no relief. I think he is waiting for Nov 2011 when each legislator is up for re election. I doubt NJ will recover from its welfare status and our governor is wasting his time. We natives are fleeing one by one for American lifestyles in southern states. Truly, I believe the national divide wiill find NJ north of the border, so to speak, and that is why working people are being chased out of state. We are being given a chance for survival if we correctly read the message from the governor. If Christie gets into the race he better be willing to be straight up. I’m tired of having to read between the lines to find the truth. Though, I too, will soon flee for greener pastures.

By the way, Gary Stein, a candidate for the Assembly, stated today that he will fight for single payer healthcare in NJ. This is the kind of crap our governor faces each day.

Why no talk of Christie...

skorrent1 (Diary) Friday, May 27th at 11:45PM EDT (link)

Burnishing his CV with a Senate run in ’14-’16? With a GOP to top the ticket, and in the middle of his second term, wouldn’t that set him up for a try in ’20 or even 24? He’d be a mere 61 in ’24.

It blows my mind

jmimac351 Saturday, May 28th at 1:13AM EDT (link)

that people on a conservative website are actually expressing concern about what the MSM media will say about Perry being from Texas. Do you think Dems were ever concerned about Obama being from Chicago and “The Chicago Way”? Of course not. I don’t give a rats rear end what the MSM will say – they will attack him either way. In fact, I hope they do attack Perry on this level. It will provide a great opportunity to have a real discussion about the corrupt political environment Obama comes from, and the continuing culture of corruption that permeates his entire regime.

Perry is not a whimp, and he doesn’t need to be surrounded by conservative whimps – for crying out loud…

Perry has military experience

chieftain (Diary) Saturday, May 28th at 1:25AM EDT (link)

plus governor of a large state who has governed Texas well for years and run several campaigns. Strong fiscal conservative. Perry meets the classic standard of the kind of experience one would want in a President & Commander in Chief. He is the “unObama”. His Governor – military- conservative philosophy credentials are very strong. To argue that he is a repeat of Bush since he is from Texas is like equating Romney and Ted Kennedy. Will a baseless charge be made? Of course, but look at the secondary effect. Once the Democrats make the charge, then the DIFFERENCES and commonality between Perry and Bush will be held up and magnified and then compared to the present administration. I like that idea very much from both a domestic economics and foreign policy perspective.

The infatuation with Chris Christie & Donald Trump...

IronDioPriest (Diary) Saturday, May 28th at 9:40AM EDT (link)

… shows us one thing: The American people – conservative American people to be more precise – are hungering; yearning; pining; desperate for – a leader who is unafraid to speak the truth.

Chris Christie is not a conservative. He is a tough-talking fiscal conservative, but he is far too Left on too many issues to garner the nomination.

But as with the flurry of enthusiasm surrounding Donald Trump, we see something in this audacious, fearless style that we crave.

Who among the establishment candidates can offer both policy credibility, a strong record of accomplishment, charisma, and fearlessness? Or, will that person come from outside the establishment?

“If we finally fail in this great and glorious contest, it will be by bewildering ourselves in groping for the middle way.”

I think Chris Christie should run

cherryann1000 Tuesday, May 31st at 5:16PM EDT (link)

I’m not entirely sure where you come up with Chris being ousted if he runs again for gov; your only excuse seems to be that NJ is a mostly Democratic state. That said, then how did he get elected in the first place? Yes, there will be lingering problems fiscally the next go round, but all in all, he has made a stupendous first effort to get his fiscal house in order and, I believe, will get it under control. As far as his becoming a nonentity if he doesn’t run now, please! The other cast of characters have absolutely nothing to show so far that would incline me to vote for any of them, with the exception of Herman Cain. They are just a bunch of all-talk politicos who keep repeating the same mantra over and over that the people want to hear without any real commitment or substance underneath. Don’t get me wrong; I am very conservative and a Republican, but frankly, neither party inspires me with confidence and the offerings are poor. I hope Chris does run; I’d vote for him in a heartbeat and so would a lot of others.

No, Christie should not run

renny (Diary) Tuesday, May 31st at 6:19PM EDT (link)

Although still popular, his numbers are tanking over failure to supply property tax relief, altho’ where anyone thinks it is going to come from is like wondering where Soc. Sec.’s unfunded 100 trillion is coming from.

Christie has been the recipient of an uptick in some revenues, which he thought he would put to prop. tax rebates and some debt relief, but the NJ Sup Ct., mostly appointed by Christie Whitman, said the 500 mill has to go to the “Abbott” districts (the low-income you should steal from the suburbs ruling decades ago which makes cities like Asbury Park get 32 thou a student while it’s closing schools because even the poor and downtrodden will get out of the Dem. noose if given the chance). Christie is not going to fight over the ruling because the only way to get around Abbott (now called something else) is to get the leg. to write something reasonable on school funding. Good luck.

I do not want another Southern gov., but I would be interested in Perry over Pelawnty.

TX has been one of the few states that has been at odds with the EPA, fearless leader, the Corruption Department led by Holder, and the general left. I don’t think even little o can get any mileage out of Bush being from TX in this go around.

We need governors who will stay the course in their states, and fix them. True government is from local to national, not the other way around.
