Tim Pawlenty Impresses Right Online #RO11

The energy level was not the same as with Michele Bachmann, but then the speech was a different sort of speech.

Pawlenty arrived at Right Online after a rough day of travel from Iowa with a very late plane. We were actually going to meet and chat before he went on stage. Instead, he took off from Iowa at the time we were supposed to meet and made it to Right Online ten minutes before his speech.

Consider that he arrived ten minutes before his speech after multiple flight problems and used neither notes nor the podium to make his case. The crowd responded extremely positively to a guy who could, unlike Obama, speak without a teleprompter and, unlike Bush, not make a series of unfortunate verbal gaffes as a result.

It was a refreshing demeanor and a great speech. He threw in a jab about Mitt Romney saying we shouldn’t be rewarding co-conspirators to Obamacare. He took on Obama’s energy policy and spending policy. His energy policy was summed up in two words, “More energy.”

He highlighted his record as Governor of Minnesota, even pointing out he was willing to shut down the government to force the legislature to restrain spending.

His speech was like his campaign style — it was slow and steady, not boring, but not flashy, building steam to the end. By the end, he had the crowd cheering and denouncing Obama’s policies with him.

A lot of people I know like Pawlenty a lot, but they don’t view him as “Presidential.” They sometimes use the word “gravitas” and say he lacks it in a way Mitt Romney does not. “Sure, he’s the guy you want to have the beer with, but maybe he isn’t the guy you want taking the 3 am phone call,” they say.

Maybe it is the gradual evolution of Pawlenty on the campaign trail as he continues to build steam or maybe people are just noticing. But his speech, unteleprompted, without notes, and without time to decompress from his flight before taking stage, was the kind of speech a Presidential candidate gives who is the kind of candidate you must take seriously whether you want to or not.

“They sometimes use the word ?gravitas? and say he lacks it in a way Mitt Romney does not.”

“Gravitas – connotes a certain substance or depth of personality.”

Oh, is that what Mitt has?

Wondering what you think about the RLC straw poll?

    Paul 612
    Huntsman 382
    Bachmann 191
    Cain 104
    Romney 74
    Gingrich 69
    Palin 41
    Santorum 30
    Pawlenty 18
    Johnson 10
    Roemer 9
    McCotter 2

The rightnets are alive with the sound of whining….Huntsman paid for people to attend. And Romney et al didn’t? Please.

Keep in mind that Romney, Huntsman and Palin did not attend, while Paul, Cain, Gingrich, Pawlenty, Bachmann and Santorum did.

Perry would doubtless score high here, but he was not on the ballot. Nor was Giuliani.

Here you see Michele bachman rising, Romney holding,, Pawlenty fading, much as was demonstrated in the Republican debate. Ron Paul is much more impressive than he was in 2008, the door is opening for Rick Perry and closing for SarahPalin. Huntsman is going to win.

Did anyone ask Pawlenty about the Shariah financing in Minnesota while he was Governor?

Tim comes across as an idea guy and a very hard worker. However, many only have time for sound bytes and grade a candidate more on the “cult of personality.” Pawlenty is a serious candidate, and I hope people will take a second look. I have confidence he would make a great president.

  • rcatheart

Look what “rockstar” got us in 2008. I don’t need fainting women or “leg tingles”. Boring and competent is totally fine by me.

I get that running for president requires a certain ego to begin with, but I think this country would do well to have someone in office who doesn’t seem to overly impressed with himself, and who just wants to work hard and get the job done. That’s the impression I get from Pawlenty – that believes himself to be engaged in an extended job interview, not a beauty pageant.

Personally I think Romney is shooting himself in the head each time he opens his mouth. At least with a majority of HIS party’s registered voters. If he mistakenly believes he is going to get moderate democrats to help him out he’s nuts…unless some how Obama makes himself totally unelectable come primary season.

I would not be unhappy with Pawlenty at all. I’ll take steady and measured over a flash in a pan any day. Maybe that’s just what we need at this time given our country’s current problems.

  • septembergurl

Twice elected Governor of Utah, first time beating a Democrap incumbent, second time winning close to 80% of the vote.

Not a serious person? How so? and who is serious?

  • Kyle-MI

Maybe I am weird, but the guy I want taking the 3 am phone call is the sure and steady guy, not the no-substance flashy guy (or gal) who is suppose to have “gravitas”. Pawlenty is exactly the kind of intelligent calm person I would trust most with the 3 am phone call. Maybe he should be emphasizing this aspect of his personality more, play to his strengths.

  • msctex

It’s just that the Democrats are serious about him winning the Republican nomination.

re RomneyCare attacks due to the stage of the race, but his quick back-off does give me pause…

My main thought on Campaign 2012 so far is how surreal it is, post-2010 historic conservative landslide that a squish like Mitt could be the above Ron Paul poll numbers.

  • Doc Holliday

Mitt is more assertive, even if his positions are left of the party. I think Paw will get his chance, but he has to change himself, maybe he should call Donna Brazile?

I gave up waiting for TPaw’s speech. I planned on watching his speech and leave RO11 at 4:00 pm, but he did not arrive until after I left. Oh well. I was not disappointed in Michelle or by Michele’s speeches. They delivered, as did most of the presenters.

Been to AFP’s website, found a lot of photos but would like to watch a video of Pawlenty’s speech. Anyone have one? TY beforehand.

  • cpaguy

T-Paw is in my pool of viable candidates who I actually believe will act like conservatives and are not just blowing hot air and aren’t by the book RINO’s (i.e. Romney, Perry, Huntsman).

(With Pawlenty, Cain, Santorum….can’t go wrong)

  • desertwanderer

Ventura won with 37% and Franken 42% and you write off the whole state. Do you throw Michele Bachmann under the bus as well? And what about the entire USA, which elected Clinton with 43%? Please, next time bring a serious argument. We conservatives in MN are battling hard – we even took over the state legislature for the first time ever; we don’t need snarky comments like this.

to actually listen to Tim and study his record as governor, they’d know he could be a solid nominee and a good president. Those who rely on TV, videos, commentators and punditry just cannot know who a candidate really is or what his strengths are. Tim Pawlenty actually changed the mindset of people in Minnesota, both R’s and D’s. The state now has an appreciation for lower taxes, considerably lower spending and less gov’t intrusion. Not everyone, of course, but there’s a new attitude there.

If not for the independent in the governor’s race last year, I think another Republican would have been elected. The state is changing from very deep blue to purple, and a lot of that is due to Pawlenty’s leadership and his overall approval.

without addressing the issue. Okay. Let’s try this. Your original post on this issue is “hasty generalization”, “weak analogy”, and “straw man.” It still reveals a weak argument and a lack of careful reflection.

that gave the Ds the 60th senate seat (Al Franken) was riddled with fraud, thanks to the Secy of State who was supported in his election by George Soros. And, the last governor’s race would have gone to the Republican, Tom Emmer, if not for the independent who got a decent percentage. Minn. shuld have never elected Mark Dayton. He will be a disaster and is already showing signs of that. He doesn’t even want to negotiate with the legislature over the budget and is asking for a mediator instead.

  • desertwanderer

of what happened in those elections. The Independence Party has been a burr in the saddle for conservatives in MN and has probably cost the GOP several races. And, yes, Dayton is a real piece of work. My only reason for replying to this thread initially was to respond to poor reasoning, something that I expect conservatives to rise above.

  • redtillimdead

Instead of responding to his very good argument against your argument- possibly one of the stupidest things I have ever seen- you just question his understanding ad hominem? weak sauce

  • redtillimdead

Just because the MN race was the last one called does not mean it is the only reason Dems got the 60th seat. Rick Santorum gave Dems the 60th seat. George Bush gave Dems the 60th seat. If it hadn’t been for their support of Arlen Specter, MN would only have been the 59th seat. And lets not forget all of the states that also replaced Republicans with Democrats. Oregon gave Dems the 60th seat. Alaska gave Dems the 60th seat. Colorado gave Dems the 60th seat. New Mexico gave Dems the 60th seat. Virgina gave Dems the 60th seat. North Carolina gave Dems the 60th seat. New Hampshire gave Dems the 60th seat.

  • Doc Holliday

but not a serious remark. ad hominem means a personal attack, hence joking about a state can not be ad hominem.

I am actually glad to see people defending their state so strongly that are not from Texas lol.
