Republicans Who Support Mitch McConnell’s Plan Should Be Deeply Worried by a New CBS News Poll

Republicans backing Mitch McConnell‘s Pontius Pilate Act should be deeply, deeply worried by a new CBS News Poll. The poll shows the public is very unhappy with the way things are going in Washington.

In fact, 51% of Republicans and 73% of Independents disapprove of the way the GOP is handling the debt ceiling. “But wait,” you say. “That must mean they want to go with the Democrats.”

Except for a few things we can interpret from this poll consistent with other polls.First, 66% of Independents and 81% of Republicans also disapprove of the way Democrats are handing the debt ceiling.

Second, we know a majority of voters, including a significant number of independents, do not want the debt ceiling raised at all.

Third, this poll was conducted of all adults, not registered or likely voters. That means that should they be narrowed down, you’d find the numbers going even more against the Democrats.

Fourth, this poll was taken on the weekend, which typically lowers the number of conservatives polled.

Fifth, if we are to read this poll as consistent with other polling out there right now, we can see a majority of Republicans and a strong majority of independents want Washington to actually fight on this issue — not kick the can down the road again as Mitch McConnell would like.

Again, if the GOP isn’t careful, it could sow the seeds of its own destruction.

More Indies and Dems in this poll that Repubs…no way anyone can say it is slanted to favor consevatives, yet it presents a very clear case that the general public wants to see some fiscally conservative action coming out of DC.

Penetrate the media cocoon around Washington DC. If Not…

I have a query… Remember when Tea Partier’s just about surrounded the capital during the Obamacare force-feeding. Ummmm, call me crazy, but would this situation not warrant the same attention? If there was ever a time to march on the mall, some time before Aug 2 would be it.

    *shrug* /Salute.

  • smitch61

My neighbor who rarely votes said ” I didn’t vote for republicans, I voted for STOPPAGE”.. I hope they are paying attention.

  • rowdydfw

I just commented to Rep. John Fleming’s post on facebook that said SOME republicans are getting very uneasy because of the polling data…I responsded back with…

Why are the suppoedly SMART people in Washington DC getting worried by some trumped up polls? Us unprofessional plebes out here on Main Street are not fooled at all by this data! Why aren’t these republicans paying attention to the people they are hearing from PERSONALLY instead? How much louder do we have to scream in their ears to be heard? Could it be their disdain for Tea Party’s millions is causing a power play maneuver and the establishment is going to do whatever just to show us they can since we’re refusing to support their fake republican candidate Romney?

  • lineholder

so it is actually data that you could be using to back up that stand.

  • rowdydfw

But this poll data was NOT what he was talking about.

    John Fleming:
“Many of you say, “Republicans cave every time.” Well, you may just be right. The fact is that Republicans can be no stronger than “we the people.” As we get close to crunch time, slightly more centrists feel Democrats are winning the debate than Republicans. Folks, you know where I stand, but some of my Republican colleagues are worried by these numbers.

Feel free to point out if I’m wrong here?

This look like a rush job with a skewed sample (especially the ‘all adults’ part) intended to give Obama some numbers that show his ‘taking his case to the American people’ is working. But these number fall far short of supporting the president’s position. CBS and the white house have to be disappointed with these results.

Jon Kyl’s staffer at least had been given a talking point. She said while Jon Kyl supports the Cut, Cap & Balance pledge,, he thinks it would be “inappropriate” to sign the pledge while he is involved in negotiations with the Democrats. I told her that made no sense — that not signing the pledge shows lack of leadership and courage in the face of a Democrat Senate that has not passed a budget in over two years.

John McCain’s staffer had even less information to share. He simply had been told to say that Sen. McCain did not have any information to share regarding whether his not signing the Cut, Cap & Balance pledge showed a lack of leadership and courage on his part.

I made these calls knowing full well that nothing I would say to these two elected public servants would make an impact on their reasoning. They are “untouchable” by the voters of Arizona. Kyl has announced he will not run for reelection. McCain won’t be up for reelection until 2016 and spent over $20 M to win his primary election in 2010.

So, I will continue to recruit conservative Republicans to become precinct committeemen so that we have the best chance of making sure that conservatives eventually replace these two less-than-courageous fellows. By helping to get out the vote for the best conservative candidate in each of the all-important, traditionally-very-low-turnout primary elections.

    Thank you.

This Politico story is a case in point:

Skim the comments and you will see that the left-wing kooks are just ignoring all the other polling that says no one wants a debt-ceiling increase. What we need to get across to our Congress Critters is that this shows how much trouble they are in with the base – Pontius Pilot McConnerll’s and the other compromise plans have angered us all, and the polling reflects that.

  • shellydog2

Senator McCain quoted this poll as a reason to follow McConnell’s plan. He kept saying we saw what happened in 95. He’ll try his best not to raise the debt ceiling but they must have something to fall back on. I thought Shawn was going to slam the phone down. He tried to explain that there would be such a backlash they’d think there had been another Tsunami and it wouldn’t be in Japan. McCain just wouldn’t listen. What worries me is that if he is trying his hardest, than we really are in trouble. That’s what he said about running for President. We really need to get these guys out of Washington and back into a rocking chair on their front porch.

Congressman Fleming is my Rep. I have written him along with Senator Viter, Cantor and Boehoner. I know where he stands but maybe more people need to write, NOW!

Get real all of you and take a stand against the Democrats once and for all. The drive-by Media is spinning this way out of context. People that don’t have cable or Satellite only hear the garbage and lies put forth by those at CBS,NBC,ABC, CNBC, and CNN. Get out there Republican members of Congress and fight. Rubio has the corrct message, follow it.

The illusion of the left as with their other delusions are being exposed. Unlike the other delusions of the left this one has an expiration date, it’s second. Only this time those in congress will be going home to face We The People. The curtain will be pushed aside and the great Oz will be revealed.

Am I the only person chortling to himself that the same lamestream media outlets that announced that Romney was ‘unelectable’ in 2008 due to his Mormon faith, is now touting him as ‘The only serious challenger’ Obama has? Much like they said The Great White Dope (McCain) was the only one who had a prayer in 2008! GOD! I HOPE we don’t let the lamestream media pick our candidate again! Look for mke to post this again and again and again ad nauseum between now and Nov. 2012, because McConnell proves that we tend to forget lessons unless reminded regularly!

  • williamjameson

and that the media aren’t convincing the public that Obama is doing the right thing either. He had a super majority where he could have cut costs his way, but no he wasn’t interested. Class warfare in Chief.
